In the workshop, Andy was feeling a deep sense of despair as he looked over his plans and sunk his head down in misery.
"Dad!"
Alarmed, Andy looked up and looked towards the entrance, seeing Tulip running in with Jesse following behind her.
"Oh, Tulip," sighed Andy with relief. "I'm so glad to see you."
Tulip reached his desk and stopped, pressing her hands on it.
"Dad...everything I've seen at Shining Time is true," she panted, "and there's this island with talking trains... and... they said you might have been there. But Mr. Min-Gi's is very sick... and Ryan's in danger... and I had to leave poor Thomas behind. Please help me!" she begged, before pulling out Min-Gi's conductor's cap, showing it to Andy.
Andy gently held the cap in his hand.
"I'd like to help, Tulip," said Andy quietly. "But I don't know how. Nothing seems to work."
Tulip was getting desperate until she looked around, realizing where she was. This was his workshop. And looking at the tunnel mouth ahead, she saw where that went. It was the Magic Railroad!
Then, she looked back and saw the engine.
"This is the lost engine from long ago, isn't it?" she asked hopefully. "Now we can go back to the island and bring Mr. Min-Gi and Ryan home.
"I'm sorry, Tulip," said Andy sadly. "I can't make her steam, I've tried every coal in the valley, but nothing works. And now I know I've run out of time."
But Tulip wasn't ready to give up yet. She looked to the engine's side tank and read the name.
"Lady, is that her name?" she asked.
"Yes," said Andy, raising an eyebrow, unsure of what she was getting at.
Then Tulip started to think, remembering Min-Gi and Thomas's words.
"Stoke up the magic in the mountain and the Lady will smile."
"That's what you do with coal, stoke it up to make steam."
Stoke, mountain, Lady, coal. She began to put each of the scrambled words together. Stoke, coal, Lady, mountain. And that's when it became clear.
"Coal!" Tulip exclaimed loudly. "Special coal from the Island of Sodor! That's what Lady needs." she said before turning to Jesse. "Jesse, there's a coal truck at the top of the mountain where a little blue engine with a number one is waiting. Can you fetch it?"
"Of course I will," Jesse replied as he hurried to get his horse.
Now Tulip and Andy were alone once again. While they waited, Tulip decided that this was the best chance to talk.
"Why couldn't you tell anyone about Lady?" Tulip asked.
"Because I felt I'd let everyone down, most of all the conductor's family," he admitted. "They chose me to be Lady's driver."
As they talked, Atticus arrived to make sure everything going alright. And now, Tulip has plucked herself the courage to ask the most important question of all.
"Did Mom love Lady as much as you do?" she asked. "Did she take a ride on her?"
"Mom loved her because I loved her," he said without looking at her, "but she never took a ride on Lady. I couldn't fix her in time," Tulip stayed silent as he continued. "I wanted to take Megan on our Shining Time."
"Your Shining Time?" she asked.
"A wonderful journey when the train wheels turn and the rails shine," he said. "It was always going to be tomorrow, tomorrow Lady would work again... tomorrow would be perfect..." he went on, finally looking up at her. "And then it was too late, and so I shut out tomorrow."
Sympathetic, Tulip gently put her hand on her dad's.
"Don't shut out today too, Dad." she said.
Andy stroked his daughter's hair as Tulip tied the friendship bracelet in a little knot so that it fits his wrist better before looking into his eye with a kind smile. And, in response, Andy gave her a wonderful smile for the first time in years as he gently grasped her hand.
Their moment was interrupted when Jesse returned holding a sack with him.
"Tulip, Mr. Olsen, I've got the coal!"
"Good," said Tulip. "I hope you thanked that engine for bringing it."
"What engine?" asked Jesse.
"The little blue engine with a number one standing with the truck, like I told you," Tulip answered.
"But, Tulip, I didn't see any engine up there, just the truck," Jesse said as Tulip raised an eyebrow. "I mean, I guess there might've been an engine there. Come to think of it, I did see what looked like grooves on the ground which seem to have been made by an engine's wheels. In fact, I think I saw them going down the mountain from there."
Tulip's eyes widened in horror.
"Did Thomas fall down the mountain?!" she wondered, starting to hyperventilate until Andy put his hands on her shoulders.
"Relax, Tulip. I'm sure wherever that engine is, it might've returned to the railroad at the bottom." he reassured.
"Can it?"
"Sure, those grooves seem to have been headed for that meadow where we rode on," said Jesse. "It might've gone back in there."
Tulip began to feel less scared. She started to think that if Thomas really had gone back to the Magic Railroad, then it must be waiting for them in there right now. She regained her composure and grew firm.
"Then let's get to work."
Without a moment to lose, Tulip lit the fire and Andy shoveled coal into the firebox. Jesse watched the gauges. And when she had plenty of steam, Andy pulled the whistle cord.
"PEEEEEEEEEP!"
Lady was alive and steaming!
Then, Andy released the brakes, turned on the reverser on full forward, eased the regulator, and Lady started to move! Everyone was overjoyed, filled with much pride! Atticus jumped in with them, joining them on the ride as they all disappeared into the tunnel with two blasts on her whistle.
On The Magic Railroad, Lady was running smoothly, puffing clouds from her funnel. Jesse looked down from the back of the engine.
"Tulip, look at this!" he said.
Tulip looked down at what he was looking at. The rails were becoming clear and golden. Not only that, beautiful multi-colored shavings, all the colors of the rainbow, falling behind her and gather on the ground between the rails.
"The railroad's getting its energy back," said Jesse in wonder.
And it was. It was the ultimate wonder of the Magic Railroad. Then, the wind created by the force of the moving engine blew them down the tracks and away.
As the engine glided gracefully on the rails, the wonderful lights around them all turned into shades of green.
"Well, m'Lady, the lights are all green for you now," said Andy proudly, "green for glory."
Andy and Tulip looked at each other lovingly as Atticus looked up happily between them.
"Mom would have loved this journey," said Tulip gently, fully certain.
"Yes. And she would love it now, knowing that you are with me," said Andy decisively, putting an arm around her and kissing her forehead.
And as Lady moved along the rails, gathering speed, the thorny and overgrown tunnel began to shrink and disappear until it all faded out of existence, and they were soon greeted by a beautiful, sunny landscape, as if it was in reward because of the care and commitment of those around her.
What happened next was totally unexpected. At the front, instead of there being a smokebox door, there was now a face, a lovely, beautiful face of a true lady. And, for the first time in ages, Lady spoke!
"So, Andy, you didn't forget about magic," said Lady proudly, "it's safe inside you."
Andy agreed, knowing that she could speak to him again was proof that she was now truly herself again.
Tulip studied this phenomenon with great interest, as well as wonder as she quickly took her One-one toy out of her knapsack and caught some of the shavings, then pops them back in her knapsack along with her One-one.
"Peep-peep!"
That whistle didn't come from Lady. Tulip however knew that whistle and looked around and saw, in the midst of these marvels, a flash of blue. And there it was!
"Thomas!" beamed Tulip.
Andy, Jesse, and Atticus turned around and looked to where she was smiling at.
It was Thomas, having long lost his nasty passenger at last and, at the point where the branch line from the meadow met the Magic Railroad's main line. Thomas smiled when she saw the lost engine revived.
"You found her!" called Thomas happily. "And she's beautiful!"
Relieved that he was okay, Tulip pulled on the cord for Lady to whistle to him.
PEEP-PEEP!
And Thomas whistled back in response.
PEEP-PEEP!
As Thomas bumped along, Lady's wake of shimmering shavings settled on the rusty tracks where Thomas was, turning gold as he gained more traction, and he sped up after them.
Back on Sodor, Diesel 10 arrived at the scrapyards, giving the Ryan the ride of his life on his roof. Only now, Ryan wasn't having fun anymore as he had grown very weak, worse for wear, and out of breath.
"I'm sorry, buddy! I'm sorry, Tulip!" Ryan cried despairingly. "I haven't been very... whatever it is... responsible, reliable, really useful! But I will be!"
Diesel 10 roared into the smelting shed, where James was shunting his train of iron before leaving. He was just ready to head out when he saw Diesel 10 rushing towards him very fast.
"Watch out!" called James.
Diesel 10 applied the brakes and grinded to a halt with a jolt in front of James, flinging Ryan off his roof and onto James's cab roof instead. Once Ryan recovered himself, he grabbed his whistle and blew into it.
No sparkles came!
"Ah, so you've lost your sparkle too, eh?" sniggered Diesel 10, raising his claw. "Bye-bye, Twinkle Toes!"
Ryan tried again, still nothing!
"Oh no! No-no-no!" panted Ryan, shaking his whistle in panic. "It's empty!"
"Here we go!" sneered Diesel 10 as he inched closer to James, who began to back away in fear towards the sidings, where the furnace was right behind the buffers.
"Ryan, what are we going to do?" asked James fearfully.
"We'll think of something," replied Ryan before looking back to see the furnace behind them.
"That's it!" smirked Diesel 10 as James's tender hit the buffers.
But the diesel wasn't stopping. Then Ryan remembered and grabbed inside his chest, pulling out the emergency supply of gold dust Tulip wanted to save for her dad. There were no more options, this was an emergency as he saw James's tender pushing the set of buffers back over the edge.
He had to do it! He must do it now!
"I'll find you some more, Tulip, I promise I will." Ryan said. "But if I'm going to be able to help anyone at all, it's now or never. I've got to use up the last of this stuff!" he finished as he poured the dust into his whistle while the buffers fell over the side and into the furnace, burning and melting in the fiery flames below. In any second, they would fall in themselves.
"Are you ready?" asked Diesel 10 eagerly.
"No, we're not!" cried James as James's tender inched over the edge.
Without a moment to lose, Ryan got ready to blow into his whistle one last time.
"James the Brains, get us out of here!" Ryan shouted as he inhaled a deep breath and blew into his whistle.
Gold dust surrounded both himself and James in an instant.
"Now we are!" smiled James as they disappeared in the cloud of gold sparkles and vanished from sight.
"What the...?!" exclaimed Diesel 10 in shock.
Meanwhile, at the old sidings at Vicarstown, Splatter, Dodge and George returned to the site to finish the job. They looked down at the long track where the magic buffers were. The two diesels stood on either side of George, standing on the roadway.
"Now, destroy those buffers!" demanded Splatter.
But George didn't move. The two diesels were wearing on their patience.
"Hello! George why are you just standing there?!" snapped Dodge. "Destroy them!"
But George didn't hear them. He was still thinking about what Edward had said to him the other day.
"Even though you prefer more on the roads than rails, you're still the same as the rest of us."
"That being said, YOU'RE a steam engine too!"
Edward was right, he is a steam engine, he runs on coal and water just like them. Well, he knew his place now, he finally understood what Edward was saying. George is a steam engine, NOT a diesel!
"No!" shouted George.
The two diesels were stunned.
"What did you say?" gasped Splatter.
"No!" George repeated firmly. "I don't want to! I don't want a roller rink anymore. I am a steam engine, not a diesel! If you want to smash those buffers so badly, do it yourself!"
And he rolled firmly away.
"Did he mean to say that?" asked Dodge.
"Yes," said Splatter before sighing. "Oh, very well. Let's go!"
Splatter and Dodge lurched onto the road and bumped into each other at the points, coming off the rails in the process and stopping far away from the tracks. They are now stuck.
"Now look what you've done!" groaned Splatter.
"Me? You're the one who said, 'let's go!'" retorted Dodge.
"I didn't mean at the same time!" argued Splatter.
At that moment, Edward and Percy arrived on the site while Min-Gi rode in Percy's cab, stopping on whatever was left of the torn-up sidings.
"Are you sure this is the place, Percy?" asked Edward.
"Yes indeed, Edward," replied Percy before noticing the derailed Splatter and Dodge. "Why are you two off the tracks?"
"We don't want to talk about it!" replied Splatter and Dodge bitterly.
"I'll go find a phone," said Min-Gi as he stepped down from Percy, stepped over the tracks, and onto the grotto.
Suddenly, a cloud of dust appeared beside Percy and Edward, much to their surprise, and out came James and Ryan, standing on top of his cab roof. They both cheered victoriously for their escape.
"I don't even want to know!" gasped Edward.
Ryan stepped down and ran over to the grotto, where he met Min-Gi, who was surprised to see him and they both hugged each other tightly for several seconds before letting go.
"Sorry to be so long, buddy," panted Ryan with a small smile. "Better late than never, right?"
"Ryan, we're all out of gold dust, are we?" asked Min-Gi.
Ryan looked at his tapped-out whistle, then back to his friend.
"Bankrupt," he said sadly before looking around. "But hey, it's a beautiful day! I mean sure, we're down, but we're not out."
"Well, no, we're out," said Min-Gi before pumping a fist. "But we are not down!"
At that moment. Lady raced through the buffers and onto the tracks of the Island of Sodor.
"She's done it, Dad, she's done it! She's on the Island of Sodor." cheered Tulip excitedly before noticing both Min-Gi and Ryan together on the grotto. "Stop, Dad. Stop, Lady."
Andy gently braked her, and Lady came to a stop beside the grotto. Edward, James, Percy gasped in amazement.
"Lady, you've returned!" gasped Edward.
"You know who she is, Edward?" asked James.
"Of course," chuckled Edward. "I've met her once before in the old days before the North Western Railway was formed. I never thought I'd see her again."
"And I'm very delighted to see you again, my dear old friend," said Lady, making Edward smile.
As they chatted, Andy, Tulip, Jesse, and Atticus jumped off Lady to join them. Tulip hugged them warmly. Then Min-Gi took a look at Andy, who was looking as right as rain.
"I'm glad you made your way back," smiled Min-Gi to him.
Then Andy stepped over and handed him his cap.
"I believe this is yours."
Min-Gi took the cap while Tulip stood in amazement.
"I didn't think you could see him, Dad," said Tulip.
"Neither did I, Tulip," Andy said to her, "but you've reminded me how."
After watching their happy moment, Min-Gi turned to his friend.
"You know who this is, Ryan?" asked Min-Gi, gesturing over to Lady.
"Reckon so, this is one beautiful engine," Ryan commented before looking all over her in realization. "Wait, this is the lost engine?! Oh boy! Are we glad to see you. Now we can go back to Shining Time!"
But Min-Gi grabbed Ryan's shoulder.
"Ryan, we won't make it back to Shining Time without the gold dust." said Min-Gi sadly. "Without it, the magic can't exist."
Ryan pointed to his friend, then himself, then makes a gesture saying they have none left. Min-Gi nodded, making Ryan feel crestfallen.
As Percy, James, and Edward watched the scene, Percy noticed someone missing.
"Wait a second," spoke up Percy. "Where's Thomas?"
They soon got their answer as Thomas immediately appeared through the buffers and pulled to a stop right behind Lady. The engines whistled, seeing that their Number 1 friend has returned.
"Thomas, you're back!" cheered Percy.
"You really had us worried," smiled Edward.
Tulip rushed over to Thomas.
"Oh, Thomas. I'm so sorry I left you behind," apologized Tulip.
"Never mind, Tulip," smiled Thomas. "You did the right thing."
This affectionate moment is rudely interrupted by a low, loud, and long roar of a diesel's horn. Everyone turned in alarm to see Diesel 10 watching everything. When he saw Thomas had come out from the Magic Buffers, he was evermore infuriated.
"I'LL GET YOU, YOU BLUE PUFFBALL!" he yelled. "NOW I'M REALLY GOING TO TEAR YOU UP INTO TINY PIECES!"
He began to activate his claw just as, out from the magic buffers, came Simon, tumbling in the air and screaming towards in them. As Diesel 10 began to reach his claw out towards them, it caught Simon with a jolt and a loud "Oof!" Diesel 10 pulled Simon towards him.
"What are you playing at?!" Diesel 10 roared.
"What does it look like?! I'm after that engine!" Simon argued, pointing towards Lady.
"That makes two of us then!" Diesel 10 said as he tossed him onto his roof, tumbling over until he sat up at the very back while Diesel 10 began to advance towards Thomas and Lady.
"Run, Lady!" called Thomas. "Quickly! And I'm going to help you!"
"So am I, m'Lady," said Andy as he jumped into Lady's cab and moved her controls. "I'll not let you down again!"
Easing on the regulator, Lady began to move forward, quickly picking up speed while Thomas followed, keeping himself between her and the mean, furious diesel after them.
"Watch out for the viaduct!" called Min-Gi as they left. "It's very dangerous!"
Everyone watched as the two engines sped away while Diesel 10 gave chase with Simon riding on his roof, honking angrily as he past the derailed Splatter and Dodge like he was saying, "Who needs you, Splodge!" Then Min-Gi realized something and reacted in a yelp with wide eyes.
"What's the matter?" asked Ryan.
"Did you see that name on her?" Min-Gi said. "It said LADY! That engine's name is Lady! She's part of the clue to the source..."
"...OF THE GOLD DUST?!" everyone finished in unison.
Min-Gi and Ryan looked back at Lady disappearing into the distance before the two looked at each other and screamed in terror. They grabbed their whistles, wanting to help, but Tulip held them both tightly.
"You both have no magic left," said Tulip before looking to where those three engines vanished. "They're brave engines. They'll get away, I know they will!"
All the others, including the waiting engines hoped so too.
