Chapter 100: The Mafia Boss VS the Agent
"John Smith?" Iris muttered the name when Alexia visited her room to give her an update of the current situation, a name she has heard before.
"Back when I confronted him with Alpha… Don Jon mentioned that name before retreating. In fact, it sounds like the reason he retreated is because of this John Smith." Iris said, recalling Don Jon's change in attitude when he mentioned that name.
"Then we can assume this John Smith is his enemy then, especially because he worked against Don Jon to save the merchants who would become the first ones to join the Mitsugoshi Affiliate Program. I can only hope that whoever this John Smith is won't become a headache like Don Jon has become." Alexia said.
"Yeah. I hope so too. With Don Jon and Necromancer still on the loose we have too much on our plate as it is." Iris agreed.
I, the Mafia Boss, Don Jon, stood in front of my nemesis, John Smith. The moon, no longer shining red, illuminates the entire city along with the both of us. We stared at each other, waiting for the other to make their move. I decided to start the battle with a dialogue.
"I always knew you would betray me. You joined my crime syndicate specifically for this purpose, didn't you? The only thing I wondered is when you would actually do it. But to think you've found my real vault." I said while staring at his eyes, which is covered by the glass of his mask. I can feel him staring back.
"Hmph. Such a thing is simple for me." John Smith replied with a confident smile.
"I wonder, what are you planning to do with all that money?"
"That is my business alone, Don Jon."
"Are you going to start your own criminal empire? To replace me as the ruler of Lawless City?"
"I have no such intention."
"Heh heh heh. Unfortunate. Because you can't kill the devil without expecting something worse." I grinned after saying some ominous words. John Smith ignored them however and prepared to weave his wires.
"I don't care. All I need to do is finish my mission, for I am a Super Elite Agent!" John Smith declared with a fearless grin as he surrounds us with his wires.
Super Elite Agent… Kinda cringe but… that reminds me of why I chose to be an Italian Mafia rather than a Yakuza even though I am… was Japanese. It's because I wanted someone to be my Agent 007. How could I've been so blind? All this time I thought John Smith is a criminal mastermind who wanted to overthrow me… to think that he is my James Bond all along. And I think I can guess who sent him and allowed him to rob them so he can rob me back.
"And now… my mission… is your death!" John Smith continued his declaration confidently.
"HAA HA HA HA HA HA HA! Good! Then, bring it on, Super Elite Agent!" I laughed as I unsheathed my secret blade from my cane.
He responded by sending his wires after me, which I deflected with my blade. He sent more wires and I kept deflecting them. Then I went for a counterattack by jumping towards him but he immediately blocked my strikes with his wires. This back and forth exchange continued rapidly, faster than the eyes of normal people can see.
Our battle isn't limited to the hotel rooftop we started on. We occasionally jump from building after building, cutting them to pieces with our weapons in the process. The residents of Lawless City can only watch in awe of our battle.
He then tried to sneakily send a thin, almost invisible wires, to attack but I detected them immediately and responded by knocking them away with my blade's sheathe which is in my left hand.
"Did you think I won't notice that?"
"Hmph. You're better than I thought."
"I've always known we would clash, and thus I have studied your weapon long before this encounter." I declared as I deflected another wire.
"Really? Let us see how much you've studied me!" John Smith exclaimed before controlling the wires surrounding me to close in, trying to entrap me. I responded by sheathing my blade and adopt an Iaido stance. With a quick draw, I cut all the wires before they can capture me.
"Impressive. How about this!?" John Smith said as he sent more wires. This time I detect them to be made with mythril. Heh. Amateur. I've created metals stronger than mythril a long time ago, although I had to use mythril for Don Jon's blade in order to hide his connection to the Necromancer. Nonetheless, this will be a piece of cake!
I tried to cut the mythril wires but as I swing, the wires changed direction and gripped my sword. I tried to break it free by cutting the wires but they are stronger than I thought. How dense is his magic? To think a mythril can become this hard even though they are merely strings.
I tried using my cane as a club but the cane is also caught in his wires. I am forced to abandon my weapons and dodge as his other wires close in once again.
"Now that I've taken your walking stick, you're nothing but a frail old man now." John Smith said as he launched his next move, unleashing a hail of wires that moved with such strength that they looked like a flash of blue light that cuts through buildings.
"You shouldn't underestimate this old man. There's a reason why I lived this long you know." I responded even though I'm not really that old. With my bare hands, I caught the wires that he launched. I held the wires in both hands although it gave my hands some cuts that started bleeding. I injected my own magic into the wires and took control of it, launching it against him. He was forced to abandon the wires in order to dodge.
"Look who's without a weapon now." I said as I started weaving the wires and sent them against John Smith.
"Those mythril wires are expensive, you know."
"Cut the crap. You just stole my money. You can buy more than just mythril strings!"
"But I'm not out of options. In fact, why don't I borrow yours?" Said John Smith who took my sword and cane and used it to deflect the wires I sent. Huh. He's actually skilled with the blade with how fast he moved and I am not as skilled as he is with the wires. At this rate I will be at a disadvantage. What to do? Hmm… I know what to do!
I launched the wires but not in the direction of John Smith but in the direction of several residents of Lawless City, some of which are members of the Spellsword Association, currently watching our battle from below. The wires penetrate their skin and flesh and connects with their nerves, allowing me to inject my magic to their brains through the wires and control them, moving them like puppets with the wires as my strings. I took control of at least hundreds of them with the wires. Their faces showed absolute fear and pain as control of their bodies is stolen from them and they can't do anything about it. They want to scream but they cannot.
Seeing many of them being caught by my wires, the rest of the residents scattered around while screaming, running for their lives.
"Now fly, my puppets! Fight for me!" I shouted as I launched my human puppet army towards John Smith, who merely grinned as he sliced the puppets to pieces mercilessly with my sword, even those who are non-fighters. To be fair, there are no innocents among the residents of Lawless City so I guess he felt no remorse about it.
But even in pieces, their bodies are still my puppets (though the parts not connected to brains make me have to expend more effort to control them) and thus I manipulated even the pieces to attack him. John Smith was briefly caught off guard before dodging attacks coming from severed limbs and heads.
"How gruesome. But that won't stop me." John Smith, unaffected by the gore and blood, sliced off the limbs down to the bones and disconnecting them from my wires, letting them fall down.
"How about this?" I exclaimed as I collected whatever pieces I can salvage and grotesquely fused them into one by stitching them together with the wires, forming a giant amalgamation of stitched flesh and limbs.
"No matter how you do it, the result will be the same." John Smith declared as he prepared to slice the giant pile of limbs with the sword he stole from me.
I made the pile form a limb which is composed of many body parts and let it attack him. He merely dodged as the strike from the giant fleshy limb collided with a building, destroying it. Before I can make the giant launch another attack, the limb is already sliced to pieces in a flash.
But from the cut limb pieces I launched the wires at him. He tried to slice the wires off too but by infusing them with as much magic as he did, I managed to make the wires indestructible. Not wanting to fall for the same trap he gave me, he immediately dodged the wires when he realized he cannot cut them off.
But that's not all the trick I have. By utilizing blood magic, I manipulated the blood coating the wires to become my additional strings, further catching him by surprise, although he still dodged even the blood strings.
As he is busy dodging the wires and blood strings, I made the giant form another limb which is composed of many hands and launched it at him from behind him at high speed.
Judging that he can cut the limbs, John Smith chose to turn back and prepared to cut the limb before realizing the hands wields various weapons such as swords, spears, axes, pistols, etc. The Lawless City never runs out of arms after all. Whoop! Is that a pun?
Undeterred by the many hands wielding various weapons, John Smith moved swiftly to rapidly slice the hands off with the sword and blocks their attack with the sheathe he wields in his other hand.
He even blocked the bullets fired by the pistol. But this is where I got a surprise waiting for him. I took a secret weapon from inside my suit and pointed it at him.
BANG
"Ugh!" John Smith was hit by several pellets fired from a shotgun, which he does not anticipate and thus he couldn't block all the pellets like he did with bullets. The pellets are also infused with my magic and thus could penetrate his magic defense. He turned to look at the source of the gunfire and saw me emerging from inside the mass of hands while pointing my shotgun at him, a weapon never before seen in this world.
Of course I would not allow modern gun designs I brought from Earth to fall into the hands of outsiders and thus even the residents of Lawless City are only armed with flintlocks, which is the latest firearm technology that this world has invented (not that they would bother much with guns when swords are more popular). For now the gun designs I brought (shotguns, revolvers, handguns and sniper rifles) are in the process of being mass produced for the upcoming war. I wasn't a gun otaku though so I don't know much about guns in order to bring more modern guns into this world. Such a shame. I would've made submachine guns if I know more about them.
"Say hello to my little friend!" I fired my shotgun once again but he blocked it by spinning his blade rapidly, forming a shield that blocks the shotgun pellets. I decided to hide again inside the mass of hands and allowing those hands to attack him again, keeping him busy while I look for another chance to shoot him again.
But instead of giving an opening for me to exploit, John Smith took a flintlock pistol from a hand he sliced off and start firing at my direction. I used the hands to shield me but I found out too late that the bullet he fired is infused with magic, allowing it to pierce through my fleshy shield and letting it graze my cheek as I failed to completely dodge it.
Due to flintlocks being single shot guns, he immediately ditched the one he just used and quickly sliced a hand to get a new one in order to start firing. He repeated the process afterwards because of how many pistols around to choose from.
I dodged the bullets while shooting and he would dodge and fire again. During the exchange I fired three more times before I run out of shells, forcing me to hide deeper within the limb in order to reload.
Not giving me a chance to reload, John Smith started throwing swords he snatched from the limbs at me, each of them infused with magic and thus was able to penetrate through several limbs, forcing me to dodge as I attempt to reload the shotgun.
As he kept launching weapons at me, not giving me a chance to reload, I decided to let the hands around me reload the shotgun for me. I took two handguns from my pocket and start firing back at him in the meantime. He blocked the bullets by launching weapons in their trajectory, though my magic infused bullets managed to destroy the weapons he launched.
When I run out of bullets, I simply reloaded by changing the magazine (yay for modern convenience!) and start firing again. But seeing as the bullets won't give him much difficulty, I tossed the handguns towards the mass of hands around me and took my reloaded shotgun back and began approaching him.
I fired my shotgun once again, forcing him to jump away. As I shot him when he is midair, I found to my surprise that he had taken control of some of the wires back, causing some flesh to collapse from the limb of my fleshy giant. He used the wires to weave a net that he used to shield himself from the shotgun pellets.
BANG BANG
The sound of two handguns firing, not towards him but towards me. So he stole my handguns too when he took back the wires. I had the hands around me fire from their pistols to deflect the bullets he fired but his bullets, being fired from a more modern gun and was infused with more magic than I anticipated, won the clash and managed to hit me in the chest twice. "Aghh!" I grunted.
"Heh heh heh. Now this is more like it!" Taking a liking to the pair of handguns he stole, John Smith starts shooting more and more. The flintlocks won't be enough to deflect the bullets and due to how accurate his shots are, I can't dodge them forever. Luckily I have spare handguns that I took out of my pockets.
I deflected his bullets by shooting them down. He grins and continued shooting and I responded in kind. The bullets we fired kept colliding with each other, not letting the other harm the shooter. When we both ran out of bullets, we simply fill the magazine with bullets made of pure magic and kept firing. The clash between magic bullets generated shockwaves that destroyed the nearby hands.
John Smith is very adaptable. He would adapt to everything I threw at him and even respond in kind. The battle has accelerated beyond what even I predicted due to his resourcefulness. At this rate… no. I won't cheat by using the Necromancer's arsenal. I will keep being Don Jon until the end of this battle. But what can I do next? This can't go on like this forever.
As I was contemplating what to do next, he launched his original weapon, the wires, at me again, catching both my hands. I hardened my skin and flesh with magic in order to prevent them from being torn apart but the wires still cut them skin deep. I let go of my handguns and once again injects my magic into the wires and turned them against him, allowing me to break the hold on both my hands. He let go of the wires which came in contact with me in order to prevent me from stealing the rest of his wires. He countered my attacks with his own wires.
Like sword fencing, we exchanged blows using our wires, constantly trying to catch the other or catch the other's wires to disarm our enemy. In between the exchange, I tried launching the mass of hands against for one desperate attack but they prove useless as John Smith used his wires to cut them apart and even took back control of the wires I used to stitch the hands together.
I tried sending the meaty giant after him again but he already sent all the wires he had to slowly slice the giant apart, freeing the wires I used to stitch the many flesh together for his use. The meaty giant, without the wires to keep them together, fell apart and collapsed into a huge pile of mutilated corpses.
Injecting enormous amount of magic into the blood that soaked the city, I launched huge blood tentacles at him but he cut through them with his wires easily.
Next I tried to aim my shotgun at him but my hand is already caught by his wires once again, forcing me to let go of the shotgun.
Almost out of options, I coated my entire body in magic aura, mimicking No. 001's dragon armor technique even though I haven't mastered it, to defend myself from his wires but he injected his own magic through the wires, cancelling the imperfect technique I used in desperation.
Slowly but surely I am being put into disadvantageous position as my techniques and weapons are constantly thwarted. Even though I wanted Don Jon to have a rival, Don Jon is not really a fighting specialist when I came up with his character, and thus he doesn't have much specialty. He was more of a schemer type villain. Even this in fight against John Smith I already improvised a lot. But now I'm all out of cards to play.
"Tired already? Looks like age has caught up to you, Don Jon." John Smith said, misinterpreting my lack of options as lack of energy. He sent his wires to catch me and this time I allowed it.
"Perhaps so. But mark my words… Once I am gone… Someone worse will take my place." I gave my final warning as his wires sliced me apart.
"Then I shall simply destroy whoever took your place." Declared John Smith as he let my body pieces fall down, joining the piles of flesh down below.
"Lord Don Joooooon!" Marie shouted my name with tears in her eyes as she watched me fall down. I thought she's afraid of me. Why did she….? No matter. The role of Don Jon is over. But mine isn't. Heh heh heh.
The next day in Mitsugoshi office, Gamma is currently calculating the gains they recently acquired from John Smith and concluded that they will survive the economic chaos brought by the counterfeit bills and bank robberies. In fact, she calculated that the money they received from John Smith is greater in amount than what he stole from them. It brought a smile to her face. Now they can launch the Mitsugoshi Affiliate Program without worries.
"Excuse me. I bring news from Lady Zeta!" Nu entered Gamma's office room in order to deliver her report. Alpha and Epsilon are also present, the latter of whom is currently making a pose that emphasizes her feminine features for reasons no one but her can understand.
"You may speak." Alpha said, allowing her to accomplish her task.
"Don Jon Tower has fallen." The sentence she just uttered made Gamma and Epsilon gasp. Alpha merely smiled as if she had known this outcome would occur.
"Really!? What about Don Jon himself!?" Exclaimed Gamma, needing to know the fate of the most troublesome obstacle in her duties.
"Dead. It is said that John Smith has torn him apart." Nu replied, her words made Gamma so happy as if she just had her birthday wish granted.
"YEEEESSS! Finally that bastard is dead! From now on Mitsugoshi's business should run smoothly!" Shouted Gamma, cheering the death of Don Jon. Epsilon also felt happy for Gamma as she knows how annoying it is to have an obstacle in their line of duties, hers being Mordred, who knows her true identity.
Alpha, who noticed Nu's grim mood, no longer smiled. "Let her finish, Gamma." Alpha said, cutting Gamma's cheer midway. "Eh?"
"Hey Nu… Why aren't you smiling at this great news?" Epsilon asked, to which Nu replied "Someone else has taken Don Jon's place as the ruler of Lawless City."
"Who is it?" Alpha had a grim expression as she remembered reading reports of the words of Don Jon when he faced Beatrix, which gave her a bad feeling.
"N-Necromancer." Nu answered. Her words made the mood of everyone in the room drop.
Author's Note:
Here it is! The 100th Chapter and the long awaited fight between Don Jon and John Smith! Technically this is chapter 105 but if you didn't count the Prologue, Intermission and Auxiliary Chapters, it's Chapter 100. To celebrate, I wrote a longer chapter than usual, twice as long as my usual minimum word count.
With this the Don Jon arc is ending and we shall enter a new arc soon.
DerTrap: Seems like the climax of the arc is coming very soon. Just like the 100th Chapter, pretty fitting for the beginning of Don Jon vs Jon Smith.
Answer: Chapter 95: Internal Problems, which is technically the 100th chapter if you count the prologue, intermissions and auxiliary chapters, was teased to have Don Jon vs John Smith but I judged that would be too fast as they haven't interacted even once prior to that chapter and they also have to deal with other stuff too so I didn't make it happen yet that time. I'm glad I managed to make the fight start at this chapter, which still counts as the 100th chapter.
Wholesome07: Ay! he said the thing at the last! he said my thang!
Answer: The Looney Tunes Rocky Quote?
A-Yellow-Liz: Thanks for the chapter! As a side note, I wonder what was claude's previous life name?
Answer: That will be revealed sooner than you think.
HundredMasks: LET'S GOOO, THE CLIMAX OF THE MAFIA ARC IS ABOUT TO BEGIN, I'm genuinely excited now, also, didn't realize I was forgetting to check, school has been screwing me in the ass, now, I'm excited for the "worse" replacement for don Jon, And his upcoming battle, keep cooking author
Answer: Lol I know that feel. I am also busier this year as I finally got a new job. I will keep cooking though so you can take your time to enjoy my cooking.
Also, as promised, I brought guns, though I don't want to introduce too much guns because this is still a show about swords.
TheVirtualPug: The POVs in this chapter got extremely confusing near the end there. Honestly, my only major complaint with this fic since the very start is the confusing POVs. Like half the time I spend reading is trying to figure out who exactly I'm following rn.
Answer: My fault. I forgot to add horizontal line between Don Jon POV segment and John Smith POV. Fixed that one. Beyond that I've always tried to hint at the POV's identity and I don't wanna change my style by adding (Claude POV) or (Cid POV) at the beginning of POV change. I'll keep trying to make it easier to guess whose perspective you're following in future chapters.
