Author's Note: And here we are. We are almost done with the events of season 1, and we are one chapter away from beginning Moonvasion. Though, admittedly, I'm planning on expanding the ending, so it may take more than two chapters to wrap up.
In any case, enjoy the chapter. Any and all comments are welcome.
Howard the Duck was now the richest duck in the world. Little did he know how exciting it was going to be.
The day started with Howard in the McDuck Manor dining area. He sat at the end of the table with Zan Owlson on his right side and Manny, the Headless Manhorse, on his left. He looked over at the seat next to him where Scrooge sat. In the seat on his other side, Louie sat smiling at the space duck.
"So, for today only, you will have absolute control over the combined wealth of myself and Flintheart Glomgold." Scrooge said. "You will have control over my fortune, have the final say in my company decisions, and you're free to use my money however you see fit… just as long as you don't spend a ridiculously high amount on it. Then, once the sun sets, you sign the company back over to me."
"Are you sure about this, Mr. Scrooge?" Howard asked. "I mean, you're running one of the largest companies on the planet Earth. Do you really think I can keep it running for the day?"
"Ah, you've got nothing to worry about." Scrooge said. "Days like today are pretty self-sustaining at McDuck Enterprises. All you got to do is show up at the bin and attend a couple of boring meetings. The worst you have to worry about is Bradford trying to cut funding on expenses that I need in order to survive. So what do you say, lad? You on board?"
Howard thought for a quick second before smiling. "24 hours as the richest man in the world? How could I say no?"
"Atta boy, Howard." Scrooge said as he got up from his chair. "If you need me, I'll be in town seeing how much money I can make on my own before you return. Just remember, you're the richest duck in the world. There is no problem that you can't handle." With that, Scrooge walked out and left the dining room.
"Well, I guess until the day's over, I answer to you now." Owlson said to Howard.
"Great." Howard said. "So… what is it that you did for Glomgold?"
"Well, mainly, I kept him from bankrupting the company with his ridiculous schemes," Owlson said, "But I assure you, I am capable of so much more. So for today, I'll be going over your schedule."
"Schedule, schmedule." Louie said. "You heard Scrooge, Howard, there's no problem you can't handle. Everything can be bought. So if we've got only one day to have infinite wealth, I say we take advantage."
"Infinite wealth…" Howard said unable to prevent the smile growing on his face.
Since he was in a world that was different from his own, the alien bounty hunter, Bounty, had to conceal himself in dark alleyways. He peeked out to the streets to find Earthlings walking along going about their day.
"Hmm. Howard the Duck sure chose a good place to hide out in." Bounty said to himself. "It's like finding a specific pebble in an asteroid belt. How am I going to…"
Bounty stopped when he noticed a new sign being set up on top of the buildings across the street. When he recognized Howard's image on it, he read the caption that pointed to it.
"McDuck Enterprises under temporary new management! The Richest Duck in the World!"
"Well, that's convenient." Bounty said with a smirk.
He waited until a bird man passed by, and he snatched him from the sidewalk. He then pinned him to the wall pointing his laser cannon at him.
"You! Where can I find this place called McDuck Enterprises?!"
"AAHH!" the bird man screamed. "It's just across the bridge south of here! It's a really high tower on its own little bit of land! You can't miss it!"
"There. That wasn't so hard." Bounty said before throwing the man all the way across the street crashing through a window. "Now, to collect my prize."
Howard sat in his new office which was set right in front of the Money Bin. The vault was kept open as Louie walked out getting gold coins out of his emerald swim trunks. He passed by Howard, who was wearing a fancy version of his usual attire.
"Thanks for letting me swim in the Money Bin, Howard." Louie said. "Uncle Scrooge wouldn't let me do that."
"Yeah, he said something about you not being strong enough to swim in such dense fortune." Howard said.
"Eh. It was tough, but eventually, I decided to just lay in it." Louie said casually.
Owlson cleared her throat from the other side of Howard's desk to get his attention. "If you're available, we have some mandatory stuff to go over. You have a 9:00 call with your investors and a 9:15 with the Prime Minister of Henmark, and…"
"Wow. Sounds like a tight schedule." Howard said before smiling. "Eh, who cares? I'm the richest duck in the world!"
"That's right." Louie said. "One more thing, I believe you owe me something?"
"Right." Howard said before snapping his fingers.
All of a sudden, the office was crowded with a TV crew much to Owlson's confusion. They all set up their equipment pointing to the door and elevator.
"What's happening?" Owlson asked.
"The greatest reunion in television history!" Louie announced.
Just then, two large rooster men entered. They were brothers and TV celebrities, and they were not happy to see each other in the office.
"Randy." the white rooster said.
"Johnny." the brown rooster returned.
"They're the hosts of Louie's favorite TV show, Ottoman Empire." Howard said. "They build ottomans for people. And for some reason, the people like it."
"But they've been split up for a while now." Louie said. "You see, Randy thought he was too handsome to build ottomans on their reality show, and Johnny never got over his brother's betrayal."
"I swore I'd never work with him again." Johnny said sternly. "Not for all the money in the world."
Howard sighed. "How about if I give you a hundred-million dollars?"
"WHAT?!" Owlson shouted.
The two brothers smiled. "LET'S GET TUFTING!" They then started building an ottoman made out of emeralds. Louie was more than excited as he saw them working together.
"I can't believe this." Owlson groaned toward Howard. "You're really allowing this?"
"Hey, I kinda owe Louie this since he gave me the idea to trick Scrooge's enemies into giving me their fortunes." Howard said before propping his feet up at the desk. "Don't worry. It's not like it's making a big difference anyway in my enormous fortune."
Just then, Owlson got a text alert on her phone. She looked at it before looking back at Howard. "Tell that to Mr. Buzzard. He wants to see you in the boardroom."
Howard sighed before walking out of his seat. He then headed over the boardroom where Bradford Buzzard and his brothers waited. He could feel the daggers Bradford shot at him with his eyes as he sat down across from them.
"What can I do you for, gentlemen?" Howard asked.
"Mr. Howard, I won't question Scrooge's decision to make you temporary CEO of McDuck Enterprises," Bradford said, "But the fact that you spent a hundred-million dollars on an ottoman calls your business skills into question."
"Hey, don't blame me." Howard said. "Louie's the little rascal who asked for something impossible. What was I supposed to say, no?"
"Yes!" Bradford shouted.
"You clearly don't know Louie." Howard chuckled.
Bradford sighed. "Listen to me. This is a business, not a bank account. That money has to come from somewhere."
"All right, I get it." Howard said. "Well, Scrooge did warn me not to spend too much. What exactly can I do to make up for the Ottoman Empire thing?"
"The quickest way would be to cut funding on something." Bradford said looking over a stack of papers. "And according to this, we seem to be spending a lot on magical defense on a dark, mysterious island in the Heron Sea."
"A dark, mysterious island?" Howard asked. "Did Scrooge ever say what it was for?"
"No, he did not." Bradford said.
"Well, if it's not worth mentioning, then maybe we can afford to be rid of it." Howard said. "Go ahead, Bradley."
"It's Bradford." the chairman said bitterly before pressing a button. "There. It's done."
"Well, if that's all, I think I'll get back to…"
Howard was cut off by Owlson, who ran into the boardroom with a look of worry on her face.
"There's an emergency on your island in the Heron Sea!"
"What?" Howard asked. "Owlson, there's nothing to worry about. I just cut that place off."
"You don't understand." Owlson said. "When Scrooge made me the overseer of the company's expenses, he gave me access to their alert systems. I don't know what's going on there since you cut the funding, but we have to check it out."
"But I…" Howard started to say before sighing. "All right. Let's go."
Bounty had made it at the front steps of McDuck Enterprises. He looked up at its towering presence and whistled.
"My, Howard sure chose the right life. Too bad it made him a bright, shining target. Now, to…"
Once again, he stopped himself when he noticed something. He saw the Sunchaser hover from the tower and start flying off. Curious, Bounty activated a feature in his helmet that allowed him to zoom in closely at the plane. As he suspected, he caught visual of his target. Howard was seen through one of the windows on the plan that flew out in to the ocean.
Bounty sighed as he pulled his scope back. "That guy's giving me the runaround and he doesn't even know it. No matter. I have a ship of my own."
"This is your Captain Launchpad speaking. Approaching a mysterious, mist-shrouded island. Should be crashing with the hour."
"Thank you, Launchpad." Howard said as he sat in his chair. While Louie was relaxing an a recliner next to him, Manny stood patiently at the side and Owlson approached him with her tablet in hand.
"So maybe we can use this time to go everything we know about the island. And, well… We know nothing about this island other than its name, Falcon Island. It is so secret, that Scrooge had it removed from maps and satellite images. If we're to survive…"
"Relax, Owlson." Howard interrupted. "Scrooge never bothered telling the board of directors about the island, so perhaps there's nothing there to worry about."
Owlson crossed her arms annoyed at her boss.
"That oughta show her, Howard." Louie said. "It's not even noon yet, and you're already proving to be a model billionaire. A real role model for me."
As he heard that, Howard turned his head away slightly. "I… I don't think you should want me as a role model, kid."
"You're kidding, right?" Louie asked. "You're from outer space, you're a quick thinker, and you're so rich, that nothing in the world could possibly bother you."
Howard said nothing for the rest of the plane ride.
When the plan landed on Falcon Island, the gang climbed up a mountain of strange pillars and to a large stretch of land covered by a gloomy fog.
"Well, this place is certainly spooky enough." Howard commented.
"I'm sure it could use a few touches." Louie said. "Put in a white sand beach other there, a private lagoon over here. Maybe a water slide? Or is that too tacky? I'm not sure."
As they continued walking, the gang stopped and found a taller formation of pillars with a small opening at the front. They proceeded to walk right in.
"Why would Scrooge invest so much money in protecting this creepy pile of pillars?" Owlson asked.
Once they went across, they stopped at the edge where a large pit was ahead of them. They looked down and saw an incredibly large container with the McDuck Enterprises insignia imprinted on it. Around it were several mechanical turrets and green crystals that all looked dead.
Louie gasped seeing the metal container. "That's why! He was hiding a secret money bin!"
"A secret money bin?" Howard asked. "That doesn't make any sense. It's no secret he's super rich. Why would he keep this on hand?"
"Duh! It's in case he ever lost his fortune." Louie said.
"Then why make it an expense of the company." Howard said.
"Obviously, he…" Louie said before realizing something that made him happy. "Wait a minute. Since you cut ties to this island, that means the money here is free reign! I call dibs!"
"Louie, wait, I…" Howard called out before Louie rushed to climb on down. He then sighed as he climbed down with the others. "Kids."
Once everyone climbed down, they looked up at the giant container. Howard observed every inch of it with interest.
"Wow. This place is pretty crazy." Howard said. "Wonder what was inside."
Launchpad looked up at the powered-down green crystals surrounding the bin. "It must really be something if Mr. McD had all these doohickeys to keep people out."
"Or to keep something in." Manny clapped with his hooves. Unfortunately for him, no one could understand.
Louie climbed up to look for a way to open the bin. "Come on. Let's get into…" He stopped when he noticed a massively large hole on the side. "MY BEAUTIFUL BUN! What has happened to you?!" He looked inside and found it mostly empty. All that was left were a bit of broken chains.
"When Howard cut the magical defenses," Owlson said, "It must have allowed… something to break through. But what?"
Unknowing to them, a massive beast stalked over to them from behind. It was a monster-sized beast with filthy clothes, dead eyes, and a cracked, stone body. As he got close enough, Launchpad turned to notice him. Although, he wasn't exactly phased by his appearance.
"Let's ask this guy." Launchpad said getting everyone to look at the monster. "Excuse me, sir. Are you from around here or…"
The monster roared startling the whole gang. They all ran just as he attempted to reach for Howard. They ran far enough to hide themselves behind a set of pillars.
"WHAT WAS THAT THING?!" Howard cried out.
"WHATEVER MR. MCDUCK HAD TRAPPED IN THAT BIN!" Owlson shouted.
"Okay! No problem!" Howard said unsure of himself. "Maybe I can…" Before he could finish, the monster found him and wrapped his enormous fingers around him. He held him up to roar into his face.
"HEY!" Louie shouted to get the monster's attention. "Do you have any idea who you're attacking! That's the richest duck in the world!"
"Louie, I seriously doubt this monster cares!" Howard shouted.
"Howard, it's true! You ARE the richest!" Louie reminded. "There's nothing you can't solve!"
"Okay! Okay!" Howard yelled before forcing his hand up and offering a handful of large dollar bills. "Would you accept a million dollars for letting me go?" The monster roared at him making him drop his money. "Well, that didn't work. Plan B it is."
Quickly, Howard swung his foot at the monster's face disorienting enough to make him let go. Howard landed on the ground and ran off with the others. They all split into two teams once they reached a fork in the road. Launchpad and Manny took one path while Howard, Louie, and Owlson took another.
"OWLSON, DO SOMETHING!" Howard yelled.
"Oh, sure! Like they covered THIS in business school!" Owlson retorted.
They all stopped when the monster crashed through a wall in front of them and towered over Howard angrily. He braced himself for the worst, but suddenly, Launchpad and Manny fell down on top of a stack of pillars that all landed on top of the monster.
"Oh, hey, guys." Launchpad greeted as he and Manny got off.
Howard looked at the pile of rubble that landed on top of the monster. "Did that stop him?" His answer came when the monster's body began crawling its way back up. "NOPE! NEVER MIND! BACK TO THE BIN!"
Quickly, the gang turned back. They kept on running until they made it to the bin where they first found the monster. They stopped to catch their breath, but Owlson looked angrily at Howard.
"Why didn't we run back to the plane?!"
"Because… I didn't… think of that." Howard said with a few heavy breaths in between words. After one last breath, he turned to everyone. "Okay. Our main priority is to return to the Sunchaser and return to Duckburg to find Scrooge. Maybe he can give us insight on this creature and help us stop it."
"Well, how are we going to do that if that thing is blocking our way back to the plane?" Launchpad asked.
Howard thought for a second before an idea flashed in his mind. "I have an idea!"
When the monster returned to the bin, it caught sight of Howard's clothes running to the far side of the pit. It caught up to him, but quickly saw that it was just a rock with Manny's statue head and Howard's rich-guy clothes wrapped around it. While it was distracted, Howard and the others slipped behind the beast and ran back toward the plane. The monster turned and resumed its chase after them.
Once everyone made it to the Sunchaser, Howard pulled out his phone and made his call.
"This is McDuck Enterprises."
"Bradford, hey!" Howard shouted. "Listen, I need you to cut the funding on the McDuck Sattelite System immediately!"
"What? Are you sure you know what you're doing?"
"Just do it! I'll explain later!" Howard shouted seeing the monster running after him. "Just drop them at my location!"
He hung up and waited while the monster got closer. He braced for impact when suddenly…
BOOM!
A satellite fell from the sky and landed right on top of the monster. He saw that the monster was slowly starting to recover, so Howard ran back to the plane while even more satellites landed on top of the monster creating a large explosion that they left behind when they flew off Falcon Island.
Howard looked back at the island through his window. "Think that got rid of him?"
"I don't know," Owlson said, "But right now, I'm back to being concerned about your thoughtless cuts in the funding."
"What?" Howard asked. "I had to drop those satellites at the monster!"
"You also cut our broadcast signals and our orbital defenses sending them crashing to the Earth!" Owlson shouted. "Seriously, do you ever think anything through?!"
Howard was about to answer, but he stopped himself thinking back at all the mistakes he made since he came to Earth.
"Don't listen to her, Howard." Louie said. "You're still the richest duck in the world! There's nothing you can't…"
Once more, there was a sudden interruption. They looked up at the sound of metal creaking above them. Part of the plane was torn off, and a large figure jumped in from his spaceship. Everyone stated in horror as Bounty stood up with his eyes fixed on Howard.
"Heeeeeere's Bounty!"
"A Karidian?" Howard asked. "What are you doing here?!"
"They call me Bounty!" the alien pointed his laser cannon arm at Howard. "Can you guess why?"
Howard yelped and dodged before a blast could be fired on him. He hid himself behind a table peeking up at Bounty.
"How did you find me?" he asked.
"You had your face plastered on half of the billboards in the Earth city, and you dropped multiple satellites on an island where you left." Bounty said. "How could I NOT find you?"
"Okay, you're not wrong," Howard said, "But look, whatever you're paid for, you should know that I'm the richest person on the planet! So if you let me go, I can make it worth your while!"
Bounty chuckled. "You know, in any other circumstance, I might take you up on that offer. Except I was hired personally by the Collector to bring you to him. And I know better than to back out of a deal I made with him."
"The Collector?" Louie asked.
"So I'm afraid that you're coming with me!" Bounty shouted as he smashed the table where Howard was hiding behind. However, when he broke it, Howard was nowhere to be found.
Howard was carefully crawling behind Bounty trying to find cover. He hid himself behind a stack of crates where he met up with Owlson and Louie.
"Why is there an alien bounty hunter after you?" Owlson asked.
"And what's your history with the Collector?" Louie asked. "I remember you telling me about him."
"Look, these are all good questions," Howard whispered, "But now's not a good time to answer them. We need to get rid of… AHH!"
Bounty smashed the crates the three of them hid behind and cornered both Howard and Louie.
"Nice try, but no chance!" Bounty chuckled as he aimed his alien cannon at him. Howard prepared for the worst until…
"ENOUGH!" Everyone stopped what they were doing and turned their attention to Owlson, who was standing beside the landing platform controls. "I was at the top of my class at Mouseton! Ran several successful businesses! But NONE of that prepared me for you Duckburg billionaires! Reckless thrillseekers! Madmen with the minds of children! Aliens who seem to be constant trouble magnets! I tried to keep you people humble, but all you care about is money and power! Well, I'm done trying to make you better! I'm gonna become a better billionaire myself! I QUIT! Consider this my two weeks' notice, because I will stay on to train my replacement like a professional!"
"What's this have to do with me?" Bounty asked.
"Nothing, but I'll at least help Howard get rid of you!" Owlson shouted tying herself to a rope. She then slammed her fist onto a red button which caused the landing platform to open. "Now, everyone, hold onto something! Launchpad, pull us up!"
Quickly, Launchpad pointed his plane upwards while everyone grabbed onto something on the plane. Once the plane started flying upward, Bounty soon lost his footing and, before he knew it, fell off the plane.
"AAAAAAAAHHHHH!" he yelled before splashing into the water.
"GOOD THINKING, OWLSON!" Howard laughed. "NOW, LET'S…"
"OH, NO!" Louie shouted seeing his emerald ottoman strike him in the face. Howard turned and got hit by Louie and the ottoman. The two of them fell off the plane the same as Bounty did and landed in the water. Seeing how buoyant the ottoman was, the two of them quickly used it to swim back to shore before Bounty could catch onto them.
The two of them finally made it back to the shores of Duckburg laying over the ottoman that saved their lives. They both slowly smiled feeling the sand again.
"Well, what do you know." Louie said chuckling weakly. "Best hundred-mill you ever spent, Howard."
"Of course, it was the ottoman that got us into this mess." Howard returned.
"Let's not play the blame game please." Louie said. "Let's just… OH, NO! NOT HIM AGAIN!"
Howard turned to see what Louie was seeing and had the same horrified reaction when he saw something walk out of the water. It was the same massive monster they ran from at Falcon Island, but he kept walking like he hadn't been crushed by an arsenal of satellites an hour earlier.
"OH, COME ON!" Howard shouted. "CAN'T I EVER CATCH A BREAK?! RUN!"
Howard and Louie ran right into the city leaving the ottoman behind, which the monster crushed under his foot during his chase.
True to his word, Scrooge McDuck was hoping to make some money. His plan was to be a shoe-shiner like he was when he was little, but much to his surprise, business was slow. The only man he did service turned out to have been scamming him.
Scrooge sighed. "Building a fortune is a lot harder than I remember."
"MR. SCROOGE!"
Scrooge turned and saw Howard and Louie running over to him in a panic. "Howard? Louie?" He then noticed the monster chasing after him. "AAH! HIM AGAIN?!"
A truck almost hit the monster, but it stopped and the driver ran out. The monster then picked up the truck and threw it far down the street. Seeing his family in trouble, Scrooge jumped to the lamppost and spun around it to kick the monster through a nearby building wall. With it incapacitated for the moment, everyone ran to hide behind a hot dog cart.
"Scrooge, what is that?!" Howard asked.
"The Bombie!" Scrooge replied.
"That explains nothing!" Louie yelled.
"The Bombie is a curse upon whoever is the richest duck in the world!" Scrooge explained.
"That's why it's after me?!" Howard asked in a panic. "Why didn't you tell me being the richest comes with a curse?!"
"You were only supposed to be the richest for a day! How was I supposed to know you'd shut down his magical prison in that time?!"
The Bombie got his head out the wall giving the others a sign to try and make a run for it.
"So how do I stop him?" Howard asked.
"You can't!" Scrooge answered. "'He cannot be bought! He cannot be fought! Though riches you've got, your life will be fraught, untiul you have earned the one thing you have not'!"
"But I'm the richest duck in the world!" Howard shouted. "I have everything!"
"That's what I said!" Scrooge said. "I tried everything! Nothing worked! I barely managed to contain him on Falcon Island!"
Just then, the Bombie found them and prepared to strike at them. But before it could, it was blasted away by an energy blast. They all turned and saw Bounty catching up to them with a smoking laser arm. He was taking heavy breaths while shaking off the ocean water.
"Back off, Crusty! That duck is mine!" he shouted.
"Okay, him, I don't know." Scrooge said.
"I do. That's Bounty!" Howard shouted leading Scrooge and Louie to run from him. "He's an alien bounty hunter, and he's after me!"
"You?!" Scrooge asked. "What in blazes is he after you for?!"
"He said some guy called the Collector was after him!" Louie shouted. "Howard told me about him before! Apparently, he's like a psychotic hoarder!"
"What?!" Scrooge shouted.
"Look, I'll explain everything later!" Howard shouted. "Right now, we've got two monsters after me, and we don't know how to stop them!"
Louie's eyes widened when he then got an idea. "I think I got it!" He grabbed Howard's hand and pulled him to the middle of the road. "HEY! IF ANYONE WANTS A PIECE OF HOWARD, HE'S RIGHT HERE!"
"What are you doing, kid?!" Howard shouted.
"You're mine, target!" Bounty shouted as he ran over to him. He raised his fist ready to swing it at the frightened duck.
Suddenly, Louie pulled Howard aside. That was when Bounty saw the Bombie behind Howard throwing is own punch as well. The Bombie made the first blow knocking Bounty across the road.
Once he recovered, Bounty stood back up and growled at the Bombie. "Of course, you know this means war!" He aimed his laser arm again and fired a powerful blast at the Bombie sending him crashing to a wall. The Bombie quickly recovered and huffed air out of his nostrils. He ran over to Bounty while the bounty hunter did the same toward him. Once the two of them clashed in the middle of the street, they began to battle. They traded blows and swing weapons at each other without one looking tired.
All the while, Howard, Louie, and Scrooge raced to the inside of an empty car. They peeked their heads out seeing the epic battle unfold between the curse monster and the alien warrior.
"Getting those two into fighting each other." Howard laughed. "Good thinking, Louie!"
"Well, I figured, why fight against two unstoppable monsters when they can just fight each other?" Louie said.
"That is, until one of them actually wins." Scrooge points out.
Just as Scrooge predicted, the Bombie managed to knock Bounty down to his knees. He then picked him up before slamming him on the street.
"Trust me, the Bombie is going to be the victor," Scrooge said, "And when that happens, he's going to come after you next, Howard? Look, just give the money back to me! Let me take back the curse!"
"But then, he'll come after you!" Howard pointed out.
"I'll figure it out how to beat him." Scrooge assured arrogantly. "I'm Scrooge McDuck!"
Just then, Bounty aimed his laser arm at the Bombie and set it to full power. The blast hit him sending him crashing into a condemned building. Bounty jumped into the building to follow him. Though the family couldn't see the battle, they could certainly her Bounty and the Bombie going at it all around the building shaking around until it fell apart. Every last bit of it crashed and collapsed over the whole area.
Once the dust cleared, the Duck family stepped out of their car and looked over at the remains of the ruined building. They stared at the pile of bricks without a single motion made within it.
"So… is it finally over?" Howard asked.
"I think so." Scrooge said. "You know, unless one of them happens to stick his hand out right…"
Suddenly, a massive hand burst out of the rubble. The family yelled in panic as the Bombie crawled out of the destroyed building and set his eyes straight toward Howard.
"Howard, get to the bank and give me back my money!" Scrooge shouted.
"Okay!" Howard shouted. He ran to try and get to the bank, but it was closed, and it wouldn't open again for another minute. The Bombie ran over to him making him scream and run around. Scrooge and Louie tried to help him, but the Bombie knocked them away.
"NO! WAIT! DON'T!" Howard shouted as he suddenly found himself cornered by a bunch of cars. He turned and saw the Bombie towering over him. "PLEASE! STOP! I… I CAN'T DO THIS!" The Bombie held out his fists ready to deliver the killing blow until…
"I SHOULDN'T EVEN BE THE RICHEST DUCK IN THE WORLD!"
As soon as Howard said that, the Bombie stopped. He noticed as it lowered its fists gently and started stepping back. Curious, he continued.
"I'm… I'm not worthy of all this wealth." The Bombie stepped backward which made Howard realize something. "Of course. 'The one thing you have not'. That's what it means. That's what Owlson was trying to tell me. That's the thing the richest duck in the world needs to earn: humility. Being able to admit you can't do something."
"Sentimental hogwash." Scrooge said. "He's obviously afraid of facing Scrooge…" The Bombie roared in his face scaring him a bit. "Point taken."
"So… how do we get rid of him?" Louie asked.
Howard looked around and spotted Scrooge's shoe-shine stand when an idea hit him. He headed over to it and set it up. He then knelt behind it with a brush in his hand. The Bombie stared at him before planting his massive, mud-covered boot in front of him. Happy, Howard started scrubbing on the boot.
"Traveled a long way, huh? Sorry about that." Howard said. "I guess this curse affects us both."
Seeing Howard work up a sweat cleaning the Bombie's boots, Scrooge and Louie looked at each other before joining him. They helped him wipe a towel on the Bombie's boot sharing in on his hard work.
"Thanks, guys." Howard said.
"Anytime." Louie said. "Look, Howard, I'm sorry I caused all of this with my ottoman thing. It seemed like a good idea at the time."
"And I'm sorry I'm the one who planted the idea in your head that you can handle any situation since you're the richest." Scrooge said. "Sometimes, I forget that even I have limits."
"No. This was a wake-up call." Howard stated. "As good as money is, it turns out I'm still not worthy of such a responsibility. Mr. Scrooge, I know we agreed on a day, but I don't think I can handle being the richest duck in the world a minute longer. So if it's okay, I'd like to give everything back to you."
Scrooge smiled. "Sure thing."
Finally, they were done. The Bombie looked at his boots and was proud of how his reflection was displayed on his shine. He turned to Howard to give him a smile.
Suddenly, their heartwarming moment was cut short with Bounty appeared again. The alien started everyone when he burst out of the rubble of the building nearly broken apart and beat up. Still, he readied his arm cannon aimed right at them.
"THAT'S IT! I'VE HAD IT WITH YOU PEOPLE!" Bounty shouted. "I'M FINISHING THIS RIGHT HERE, RIGHT…"
All of a sudden, the Bombie caught onto Bounty's arm cannon and ripped it off. Bounty gasped seeing his electrical wiring sparking out of his stump.
"Oh… Whoops."
With that, the Bombie swung his torn-off arm like a baseball bat and hit Bounty with it so hard, it sent him flying incredibly far, farther than the eye could see. He must have been outside of Duckburg when he left. As he flew, Bounty dropped a black remote onto the ground, which slid to Louie's feet. Curious, he picked it up.
After getting rid of Bounty, the Bombie turned to Howard again, who had a surprised reaction on his face.
"Uh… thanks."
The Bombie nodded and walked off into the distance leaving the three of them standing alone on the street.
"What's this?" Louie asked holding up the black remote.
"That's a Karidian communication device." Howard said. "He must have been using it to stay in contact with the Collector."
"Well, in that case…" Louie said before throwing it to the ground smashing it to pieces. "There. Now that cyborg can't call for reinforcements."
"Well, the curse is broken, that weird alien got kicked out of Duckburg." Scrooge said. "I guess all that's left is for us to head to the bank and…"
"Wait." Howard said stiffly. Everyone looked as he took a deep breath and looked at them with concern. "Before I do that, there's… There's something I have to tell you. And now's probably the best time to."
"What's that?" Scrooge asked.
"Well, the reason the Collector was after me is because I'm the sole survivor of my home planet. He loves rare things. But…" Howard paused for a moment. "He's not the only one who's after me."
"What do you mean?" Louie asked.
Howard took another deep breath before confessing. "I lied. I'm not a mapmaker. The truth is… I'm a criminal." He paused to take note on Scrooge and Louie's expressions. "Yeah, that's right. I've committed crimes all over the galaxy. Theft. Smuggling. Arms trafficking. You name it. It's so much, that I've made several enemies, including in the Nova Corps police force. The whole reason I hid out here on the Earth was to hide out until the heat died down."
"So you've been lying to us from the beginning?" Louie asked raising his voice.
Howard frowned and turned his back. "Yes. You all started out as a cover, but over time, I've grown quite fond of you guys and your crazy adventures. But recently, I've learned that my location was broadcasted to probably every enemy of mine in the galaxy. It's not fair of me to stick around knowing that they're going to have to destroy you to get to me. And if today has taught me anything, it's that not only am I not worthy of being a trillionaire, but I'm not even worthy of being part of the family. I'm really sorry."
Hearing that, Scrooge and Louie exchanged concerned faces before looking back at Howard. After a moment of silence, Howard then felt Scrooge and Louie's hands reaching out to touch his arms. He was surprised to see them by his side.
"What?" Howard asked. "You're just… I thought you'd do a lot worse than this."
"Howard, you may be a criminal, but you're not a bad guy." Louie said. "I mean, you saved our lives on several occasions since you showed up with Mom. You never had to, but you did. You even helped me see that being super rich isn't all it's cracked up to be."
"You think you're not worthy to be one of us." Scrooge said. "But in my eyes, Howard, you're more worthy than you let yourself think."
Howard's eyes began to tear up before he pulled Scrooge and Louie in for a hug. "Thanks, guys."
"No problem." Louie said.
"Now," Howard said drying up, "If only Della can be just as understanding."
"You really like her, don't you?" Scrooge asked. After a minute, Howard responded with a silent nod. "Then it's settled. Tomorrow morning, you'll tell her everything."
"Thanks." Howard said. "Let's just hope nothing else crazy happens before then."
The Collector hummed to himself as he stood in his garden admiring the rare alien flowers he grew in them. He looked on up at a tank full of green chemicals which were then drained into the soil helping them grow and stay nutrient.
The Collector's peaceful silence was broken when he heard the footsteps of his assistant walk in. He dropped his smile and looked over at her.
"What is it, Carina?" he asked.
"It's Bounty, sir." Carina said fearfully. "His communicator has been disabled. I believe that something tragic fell upon him."
"I see. What a shame." the Collector said. "All right, then. Start searching for more bounty hunters to hunt down Howard the Duck for me."
"There's actually one last thing, sir." Carina said. She held up a small, black device in her palm. "Before we lost contact with him, we managed to uncover some footage of his last known location, a planet called Earth."
The Collector looked as the device displayed holographic photographs. It showed images of Duckburg and its inhabitants. Seeing them made the Collector widen his eyes and race for a closer look.
"What… is… this?!" the Collector roared before grabbing Carina's throat squeezing it in her grip. "Why didn't you tell me this sooner?!"
"I… I thought…" Carina choked out.
"Don't think! That's not what you're for!" the Collector shouted before releasing her. She fell on the ground coughing for air while the Collector looked down at her with disappointment. "I will decide what to do with you once we return."
Carina's eyes widened and looked toward the Collector as he walked over to his main control room. "Return?"
"Computer!" the Collector called out. His system responded to his voice. "Initiate takeoff of the mobile menagerie! And ready the Cleanser!"
"Yes, Master Tivan!"
Suddenly, Carina felt the building began to shake. She looked out the window and saw engines blasting at the ground. The entire building was pried off of the ground and headed out into deep space.
"Sir, what's happening?" Carina asked.
The Collector didn't turn back to his slave. He just stared out into the cosmos as his ship took off. "The situation has changed. No bounty hunter will be capable of doing what needs to be done now. So you know what they say… If you want something don't right, you must do it yourself."
