Arizona winced as another shot of cold tequila slid down her throat, burning all the way down. She masked the unpleasant taste with a lime, white teeth sinking into it and sucking sharply. She licked the remnants of the tart juice off her lips and tossed the used wedge down on the sticky table top in front of her.
The alcohol helped warm her. Despite the fact that it was January and raining in Seattle, she had worn one of her skimpiest dresses out to the bar. The vinyl booth beneath her was cold against the back of her bare thighs, cheeks flushed pink in the dim lighting as her eyes scanned the crowded room.
It had been a hellish day filled with back to back emergency surgeries and comforting a slew of terrified parents. And hellish days called for her favorite remedy—tequila and women.
Second to surgery, there was nothing Arizona enjoyed more than a beautiful woman in her bed. She loved the way it felt to flirt, to bat her eyes and flash her dimples and have women begging to take her home. She loved the way it sounded when they were moaning her name, loved the way it felt when the rest of the world went completely quiet as she came.
She also really loved that she'd inevitably be gone by the morning. No complications, no feelings. Most times Arizona wouldn't even remember their name and she preferred it that way. She liked the simplicity that came with being a little…slutty. Her life was stressful enough as a renowned pediatric surgeon; she really didn't need any dramatics in her personal life, too.
A sigh fell past pink lips as she failed to find anyone worthy of her attention. There were a lot of familiar faces tonight—regulars and her coworkers from the hospital. She had already worked her way through most of the gay or at the very least curious women employed at Seattle Grace Mercy West, and she tried her best not to do repeats frequently. Repeats usually led to the dreaded what are we conversation, and Arizona wasn't heartless. She didn't like using people for sex if more from her was what they wanted.
She tilted her head back to finish off her beer and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand as she stood up, resigning herself to the fact that her skimpy little dress had been a waste tonight. She tabbed out with Joe, tucking her purse into her side as she made her way towards the exit. A hand on her elbow stopped her.
She turned and saw Nadia, a pretty blonde scrub nurse that she had slept with a handful of times. Other blondes weren't usually her type, but hot was hot. "Hi gorgeous. All alone tonight?"
Arizona dimpled. It would be so easy. But most of the fun of it for Arizona was in the chase, the thrill of something new. "Sure am." She tilted her head and watched her with a charming smirk. "Surprising, huh?"
"It is, actually. But that makes me a very lucky girl."
Arizona felt Nadia start to twirl a lock of her long hair between her fingers and had to bite back a laugh. So easy. No chase at all. Half of the fun was gone already and she found herself vaguely uninterested. "I actually have a really early morning tomorrow, Nadia. So I think I'm going to head home." It wasn't a lie exactly. She ran her fingertips over the other woman's arm flirtatiously, offering her a wink. "But I'll see you around the hospital?"
"Hopefully in an on-call room."
Arizona clicked her tongue against her teeth and giggled. "You are bad." She wouldn't turn that down, though. She squeezed her arm before breaking contact and continuing for the door, hips swaying ever so slightly as she walked.
It was cold outside, in a way that kind of knocked the breath out of her as the frigid air filled her lungs and wrapped around her bare skin. She immediately swaddled her arms around herself and huddled against the brick wall for warmth.
Her breath was knocked out of her a second time when blue eyes landed on what might have been the most gorgeous woman Arizona had ever seen.
She was tall and looked strong, with beautiful arms and hands that Arizona couldn't help but imagine doing obscene things to her. Her skin was tan and kind of glowed in the warm hue of the streetlights, and she had the most radiant smile she had ever seen. It lit up her entire face, teeth white and perfect and Arizona wanted to feel them sink into her skin. She was standing in the freezing rain, long dark hair dripping wet down her back as she grinned up at the sky.
Arizona's teeth chattered just looking at her. "Are you crazy?"
The woman turned to find the source of the voice, brown eyes meeting blue, and Arizona felt her stomach flip. That perfect smile didn't falter even a little bit, and she breathed out an airy laugh as she spoke. "It's raining!"
"It's Seattle. It's always raining." Arizona tilted her head with furrowed brows, more than a little intrigued by the mystery woman before her. She had to speak in almost a yell to be heard over the rain and passing traffic. "How are you not freezing?"
"I am freezing." Brown eyes squinted a little to see Arizona better through the rain, stepping closer. Dark eyes raked over her, head to toe, and Arizona almost caught herself feeling uncharacteristically shy. "But I have a hell of a lot more clothes on than you do, which helps."
It wasn't a lie. The woman had on jeans and a thick leather jacket and Arizona wasn't sure how someone could look that sexy with that little skin exposed. The blonde tilted her head to the side, grinning and batting her eyes innocently. She could play. "What? You don't like my dress?" She did a half spin, looking over her shoulder at her bare back, her exposed thighs, her ass covered by tight black fabric.
A throaty laugh left the stranger's mouth, making Arizona smirk. "No, I definitely like it. Trust me."
"It's even better up close. Get out of the rain and come talk to me and I'll show you."
"Get in the rain and come talk to me."
Their eyes narrowed playfully at each other in a silent standoff. Suddenly, Arizona felt strong hands wrap around her wrists and pull her out from the safety of the awning and into the cold rain beating down on the sidewalk, a surprised squeal leaving her body. "Hey!"
The woman just laughed, a beautiful noise that felt like it came from the recesses of her soul. "It's raining." She repeated.
Arizona could feel her hair becoming drenched, could feel the way her mascara was starting to smear, but she didn't make any effort to duck back into safety. They were standing so close and the stranger smelled so good, a little woodsy and warm and sexy. "Oh my god. You actually are crazy."
The brunette grinned at her, locking into eye contact that made it a little hard for Arizona to breathe. "It doesn't rain like this back home. I love it."
"Where's home?" Arizona let her hands rest on her upper arms and could feel strong muscles flex a bit under the jacket. If this woman was a tourist, the blonde was more than happy to show her just how fun Seattle could be.
"Florida."
That earned a suspicious look, blue eyes narrowing. "I'm no weatherman but it definitely rains in Florida." Her rain-soaked body was starting to shake from the cold, and she felt strong hands on her hips drawing her closer for warmth.
The woman laughed, and Arizona could see her breath just slightly. "Not like this. It's sticky rain. Hot and humid, big thunderstorms. This is different. I love it."
Arizona shot her an incredulous look. "You'd learn to hate it if you lived here. It gets old."
Plump lips pursed in thought and Arizona had to resist the urge to kiss them. "I guess we'll see. I live here now as of today."
Arizona's dimples appeared and she ran her hands up and down the arms holding her, pressing her hips in closer so that their bodies were pressed together. "Welcome to the city. We should go buy you an umbrella to celebrate."
The blonde was pleased when that earned her another laugh. She wanted to keep this woman laughing, keep her smiling, keep whatever this was going.
"I can think of a few other ways I'd like to celebrate." Her voice was a little husky, and Arizona's blonde eyebrows raised. That was all she needed.
She rocked up onto her tiptoes, lips hovering over the gorgeous strangers, and kept her voice at a raspy whisper. "Was getting me soaked on that list? Because I definitely am."
The double innuendo was obvious and definitely not her most clever line, but it worked like a charm, because the brunette was leaning in and kissing her hard and it was probably the hottest thing Arizona had ever felt in her life.
Her mouth was warm on hers, a welcome reprieve from the freezing rain falling on them. A strong tongue forced its way into her mouth and she whimpered quietly, lips parting obediently as she tangled her hands in wet hair. She could feel strong hands cupping her ass, fingertips running along her thighs, threatening to slide up the back of her too-short dress.
Arizona's mouth moved to a tan neck when they parted for air, sucking the rain water off gently. Her cold fingers slid up the hem of her shirt to brush against the soft skin of her abdomen, smirking when she felt the muscles of her stomach tighten under her touch. She whispered against her ear, "How far is your new place? I can help you christen it, if you want."
The woman pulled back suddenly, surprising her. "Oh, no." The brunette laughed coolly at her, and Arizona's eyebrows furrowed. She blinked blue eyes up at her, stunned. "You're going to have to work harder than that. I'm not that easy." And then she was turning on her heel and walking away without another word, and Arizona was left behind for a few moments, speechless.
She surprised even herself when she started to follow her down the sidewalk. She was not used to being rejected like that. "I'm an excellent lay. And a whole lot of fun." She kept her voice light and perky, walking fast to keep up with her longer legs. "Are you straight or something?" The tan woman slowed her pace just a little, glancing at her through the corner of her eye. "Because believe me, that doesn't have to be a problem. I can still show you a good time." Arizona smirked lazily at her, ducking under the umbrellas of passersby moving in the opposite direction.
The woman laughed quietly and finally slowed to a stop, turning to look at the blonde head on. "Not straight." Her eyes raked over Arizona's tight body, dress clinging to her skin from being wet. "But you give me the impression that you're used to getting anything you want. I don't like it. It's off putting."
Arizona scoffed, jaw going slack for a moment. "What's wrong with getting what I want?" She smiled cheekily, noticing the way brown eyes softened just so at the sight of her dimples. "I'm a go-getter. My daddy raised a winner."
"I'm sure your dad would be very proud that you're putting those good values to use by sleeping with random women."
Blue eyes rolled. "You're very frustrating."
"I'm hungry, too. Nice meeting you." She turned to walk away again and Arizona grabbed her leather jacket in her fist to keep her there. She was not giving up that easily.
"I'll take you to dinner. I know a good diner a few blocks down." What the hell. Arizona Robbins did not take the women she was trying to bed to dinner, but the words were tumbling out of her mouth before she could stop them. "I could go for some pancakes."
She wasn't sure what had gotten into her. All she knew was that she needed this woman, needed to know what she tasted like and felt like wrapped around her fingers. She was so different from anyone she had ever met before, an effervescent energy diffusing from her that made Arizona a little dizzy. And if buying her a fucking waffle would get her to take her clothes off, she'd do it a million times over.
Brown eyes studied her carefully, suspiciously. Then finally cracked. "Fine. But only because I don't know what's open this late around here that won't give me food poisoning."
Arizona tried to keep the smugness out of her smile, because apparently that was off putting or whatever. She took the stranger's hand and interlocked their fingers, tugging gently on her arm to continue on their path. The rain had slowed to a light drizzle, but she was still soaked and cold and wanted to be inside as promptly as possible.
She peeked at the brunette when she wasn't looking. She really was beautiful. Stunning, even. She wanted her lips on hers again. Arizona was enraptured by her in a way that freaked her out a little. She didn't even know her name, for God's sake.
She held the door open for her, and they settled into a booth by a window. Her nose and cheeks were flushed pink from being so cold, and the warmth of the restaurant felt incredible, goosebumps on her skin finally settling down. She shook her hair out like a wet dog and glared playfully at the woman across the table. "I straightened my hair for nothing."
A smirk tugged at plump lips, and brown eyes glanced up from the menu to look at the blonde. "Did your makeup for nothing, too. Shame."
Arizona shrugged a shoulder, a coy grin on her lips. "It's okay. They both would've been ruined later anyway."
Before the woman could reply, a waiter came to take their drinks. Arizona ordered two coffees, which earned her an eyebrow raise. "It's almost midnight."
"I know. I hope to be up late." Arizona grinned, twisting a drying lock of hair in her fingers. She looked so cocky.
"God, you're kind of insufferable."
"I'm just confident."
"Arrogant."
Arizona narrowed her blue eyes and leaned forward, elbows on the table, to be closer. She kept her voice quiet enough that only the object of her desires could hear, staring into her gorgeous eyes. "What do you want me to do? Beg?" Her eyes darted down to her full lips, then back up to her eyes again. "Because I look really pretty when I beg."
She watched the way brown eyes darkened with desire. She knew she wanted her just as badly, no matter what hard-to-get act she was putting up. When she didn't speak, Arizona continued, voice husky. "I bet I'd look really pretty moaning your name too."
"You don't even know my name."
A dimpled smile appeared. "Then tell me."
The woman shook her head stubbornly. "I don't give my name out to random strangers."
"Just make out with them in the rain?"
The brunette's head tilted back in a genuine laugh. "I never said you weren't hot. You're very hot, but you already know that."
Arizona couldn't argue with that one. She squinted her eyes instead, licking her lips and trying again. "Tell me your name."
"No."
"So mysterious." Arizona smirked a little, leaning further forward so that her companion had an excellent view of her cleavage, lips so close they were almost touching. "I'm gonna get you to open up. 'Til then I guess I'll just call you Florida since that's all I know about you." She sat back in her seat when the waiter arrived with their coffee, and she took a gracious sip, letting it warm her from the inside out. "And you can call me Arizona."
"Is that where you're from?"
"Something like that."
They placed their orders, and Arizona grinned when the brunette drank from her own mug of coffee. Oh, she was definitely getting that late night tonight. She watched the beautiful stranger, absorbing the way her baby hairs curled softly around her face from the rain, the way her damp shirt clung to her chest as it slowly dried, the soft pink in her cheeks from the cold. "You're stunning."
Brown eyes met hers, surprised. "Careful. You almost sounded genuine there for a second."
Arizona rolled her eyes. "Because it was. I am a person, Florida, underneath all of the hot, hot sex you seem to think I have."
The brunette chuckled, licking coffee off of her lips. Arizona wanted that tongue back in her mouth. "Look me in the eyes and tell me I'm wrong."
Arizona did look her in the eyes, but instead of lying about her sexual history, she stated a simple truth. "I can tell you I don't normally take women to dinner first. You're special."
The tan woman blushed slightly, then looked around at the cheap diner they were in and laughed. "Very romantic, Arizona." She was smiling a little as she said it.
Arizona's heart leapt a bit at the sound of her name coming out of that mouth, even if she didn't know it was her real name yet. Trying to play it cool, "What? I gotta know if the sex is good first before I take you somewhere fancy like Olive Garden."
The giggle that earned her made her smile. She took a bite of her chocolate chip pancakes when they arrived, talking as she slowly chewed. "So. What made you move to Seattle?"
"Work." The brunette answered shortly.
"Are you a spy or something? It's like pulling teeth."
"A criminal, actually. You're my next victim."
Arizona pretended to think. "That could be fun for me, really. At least I'll go home with you." She giggled when Florida swatted her gently on the arm. She watched her take a bite of hash browns. Watched her chew. Watched her swallow. Okay, she was kinda starting to feel like a weirdo criminal now. She forced herself to look away and back down at her pancakes, taking another bite. "What are you willing to talk about?"
The brunette sighed. "I'm 32. From Miami. I'm fluent in Spanish. I have a little sister but we don't really talk. I like to cook. I like to sing and I like to dance but not really at the same time. My favorite color is red and I enjoy the occasional trashy reality TV. I like reading and I obviously really like rain. And I regret not ordering pancakes."
Arizona was physically restraining the bright smile that wanted to twist its way onto her face. She scooped up a bite of her pancakes and held up her fork in a silent offer, pleased when her lips opened to accept the bite. She tried very hard not to stare and failed, blue eyes darkening a bit. "Better?"
"Mhm." She grinned as she chewed. "Your turn."
Arizona pushed her plate across the table to let her have the rest of her pancakes, then settled back in her booth. "I'm 33. I like to dance, too. I'm not great at cooking but I can bake. I love running and roller skating and skiing. You picked a good place to move if you ever want to get into skiing. Or hiking. The nature here is super gorgeous. You should see Mount Rainier." Arizona was rambling now, kind of losing track of her thoughts. "I hate camping though. I love the beach. My favorite color is blue. Or pink. And I've always wanted to have chickens someday."
Florida was watching her with a soft smile as she finished off her pancakes, and it made her realize how much she had just spoken. She blushed slightly. She had never told a one night stand that much personal information before. She was grateful when the check came to give her something to distract herself with, but frowned when the woman across from her put down her card.
"I'm paying. Remember?" Arizona bit back a grin, then snatched the card before she could be stopped and read the name on it. "Calliope? That's pretty."
"Hey!" She groaned at the sound of her full name, trying to grab her card back. "God, no. Callie. Everyone calls me Callie."
Arizona tilted her head at Callie, handing her card back over and replacing it with hers on the check. She passed it off to the waiter before it could be intercepted. "It's a beautiful name. It suits you. Much more than Florida." She met her eyes, holding her gaze for a second too long to be considered friendly. "Calliope." She repeated, enjoying the way it rolled off her tongue.
"Ugh. Stop calling me that."
"I'm practicing." Arizona smirked. "For when I moan it later."
"This isn't fair. You have to tell me yours now."
"I already did. I told you to call me Arizona."
Callie narrowed her eyes at her, looking ridiculously endearing for being a little pissed off. Her arms crossed. "Seriously, tell me."
"It's Arizona. Seriously."
"You're not funny."
"I promise. Look." Biting back a laugh, Arizona pulled her license out of her wallet and handed it over. "My full government name and address is on there, so I really hope you were kidding earlier about being a criminal."
Callie studied her license for a moment, then accepted defeat and handed it back. "After the state?"
"A battleship, actually." Arizona smiled, leaving a $20 bill on the table as a tip. She zipped her wallet back up and returned it to her purse. "My grandfather was serving on the USS Arizona when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. And he saved 19 men before he drowned."
"Wow. That's… very honorable."
Arizona nodded, not quite sure what was making her open up so much. She blamed the tequila from earlier, and maybe a mild case of hypothermia. "My dad has basically spent his whole life honoring that sacrifice. He was a colonel in the marines. My older brother, Tim, he was a marine too." She swallowed. "What I'm trying to say is it's a really badass name and I'm proud of it."
Callie laughed, finding the blonde's rambling a little cute, despite herself. "You should be proud of it. It's a cool name."
Arizona dimpled and stood, holding out her hand for Callie to take. "C'mon. Let's get out of here."
Callie's brows raised. "If you think that just because you gave me your pancakes I'm going to sleep with y—"
"Shut up." Arizona rolled her eyes, keeping her voice low. "I think you're going to sleep with me because I'm hot and you want to. Besides, that's not where we're going." She pulled on Callie's hand until it was on her ass, and she was pleased when she kept it there without a fight as they walked. "Not yet, anyway."
It had stopped raining, and they had dried off considerably, but it was still chilly and Arizona shivered as the outside air hit her. Her hair was still a little damp, having turned into messy blonde curls that fell down her back.
"Are you gonna tell me where you're taking me?" Callie chuckled quietly, stepping over puddles on the sidewalk.
Arizona was not stepping over them. She was stomping in them purposely as they walked, giggling at the cold water it splashed up onto both of their legs. "You said you like to sing."
Callie furrowed her brows, confused. "Yeah. I do."
"I wanna see if you're any good." She grinned like she was up to something and it made Callie laugh.
"I think you're a little bit evil."
Arizona scoffed. "I have been so nice to you. I bought you dinner, gave you my pancakes. Even though you got me soaked."
"Yeah, but only 'cause you want to have sex with me."
Arizona smirked, and she didn't deny it. "Does the reason reeeeaaaally matter that much, Calliope? Besides, just wait and see how nice I am without clothes on. You'll be calling me an angel."
She stopped in front of a karaoke bar, twisting to grin at the taller woman, pleased with herself. "I am expecting the performance of a lifetime."
Callie could see flashing lights and could vaguely hear a horrible rendition of Drops of Jupiter coming from inside, and she laughed, a genuine one that started in her belly. "Please tell me you're joking."
"Oh, I'm deadly serious. I wanna hear you sing, superstar."
"I said I like to sing. I never said I like to sing in front of people."
Arizona giggled, so visibly delighted with herself. "You can't be any worse than that guy singing in there right now."
"You think you're so funny. Are all people in Seattle this awful?"
"A little bit." The blonde grinned. She slid her small hands up to rest on the back of her neck, tugging her down to press a wet, slow kiss to her mouth, hips pressing into her. She nipped at her lower lip and immediately soothed it with her tongue, taking her time to torture her a little. When she finally pulled back, Callie's eyes were dark, lips parted and a little swollen, and Arizona smiled in victory at the lustful look waiting for her. "But no one else in Seattle can kiss you like that."
She pulled back, breaking their physical contact, and tugged open the door to the bar, holding it open with a smug, excited grin. "Now come on. The night is still young."
A/N: New story yay! If anyone is interested in it continuing, please let me know and I'd be happy to. :)
the plan for this is a pretty simple enemies to lovers plotline (I know they don't seem like enemies right now lol but part 2 of their first night together hasn't happened yet!) with drama and fluff. Bc I can't resist a good struggle to be together first :)
Thank you for reading, please leave me a review!
