NOTE: This is based on Billy and Mandy in Trepanation of the Skull and You, a short animated film Maxwell Atoms made as his junior thesis project in college in 1995, and was never intended to air, though it did debut at the 2016 Tromanimation Festival. This parodies educational films by teaching viewers about trepanation of skulls and how this practice evolved significantly over the years with Atoms' signature dark humor, and the versions of Billy and Mandy are significantly different from the finals (especially Mandy, who has her hair in pigtails and is much more cheerful in her mannerisms, and we don't know if she has her final version's mean streak or if she's just oblivious to the harm it causes Billy; same with Billie and Manny minus the pigtails here). It's also worth noting trepanation fell out of favor in the 1700s and was phased out in the 1800s because of the harm outweighing the potential benefits; and plus you can view the film on YouTube (see the end of this story for the URLs for two videos-one that Atoms posted and one remastered version). That being said, let's get this show going!

Billie and Manny in
Trepanation of the Skull and You

[Billie is walking down the street. She stops when she sees Manny standing in front of his house.]

Billie: Hello, Manny. How are you?

Manny: I'm great! I've never felt better!

Billie: [Notices two bandages on Manny's head] Manny! What happened to your head?!

Manny: [ecstatically] It's OK! I just got trepanned.

Billie: [confused] Tre-what?

Manny: Tre-panned. Let me explain.

[The scene fades to a caveman pounding a dinosaur with his club. The dinosaur eats the caveman while three more come hopping up. Two more cavemen are standing nearby, one holding a club and a spike and the other leaning down.]

Manny: It all started billions of years ago when our forefathers used to pound spikes into each other's heads.

[The caveman with the club and the spike starts pounding the spike into the other caveman's head. The latter screams and falls to the ground, while the former looks at him shocked.]

Manny: Unfortunately, this primitive method occasionally had disastrous side effects.

[The scene fades back to Manny explaining.]

Manny: Today, thanks to the advent of modern techology...[Pulls out a drill and starts it, then stops it and puts his hands on his hips]...we don't have to worry about that anymore.

[The scene cuts to a close-up of the bandages Manny's head.]

Manny: Due to a flaw in evolution...

[The scene fades to a skull with a hole in the same place.]

Manny: ...people's skulls are actually too confining for their brains.

[The scene fades to a stressed brain with eyes and a mouth inside a skull.]

Manny: This causes great reduction in the brain's potential. To relieve this pressure...

[The brain moves out of the way for a drill as it appears on the scene above the skull. The drill starts drilling a hole.]

Manny: ...a small hole can be drilled into the skull.

[The brain, surprised, moves back into its position with a big smile on its face.]

[The scene transitions back to a surprised and enlightened Billie.]

Billie: Wow, nifty! Can I try?

[Billie takes off her hat and leans down as Manny readies his drill. He drills a hole into her head, moving around and flying backward as he finishes. Blood falls out of Billie's head and onto the sidewalk behind her]

Billie: [Still losing blood] You know, I do feel different, kind of...light-headed. [Smiles]

[The scene cuts to an iris about to close]

Billie: [Pokes her head out] I feel great. [Waves goodbye] Bye, kids!

Manny: [Pokes his head out] And kids...

[Billie falls to the ground]

Manny: ...don't forget to have mom and dad help you with electrical appliances!

[Fade out]
