Madge walks in the town square, reflecting on her life.
She was adamantly against the Capitol holding the Hunger Games every year, children and teenagers alike getting reaped for the entertainment of the Capitol and punishment for the Dark Days. In these days, they rebelled against the Capitol, as they were hurting from cruelty and oppression. She had no choice but to go along of course, as her father was the mayor of the district and she must show complacency.
Katniss always seemed so strong and reminded Madge of a mockingjay; a kind but fierce personality. She knew this girl, a girl who hunted in the woods and brought fresh strawberries to she and her father. This is why she gave Katniss her treasured mockingjay pin. She hoped it would bring Katniss luck in the arena and a symbol to represent her fire and bravery, whether or not she made it out of the arena.
"Katniss, hi," Madge greeted Katniss as she approached at their lunch table, holding a grey tray containing mashed potatoes and beef. It was to be some time before she went into the arena, as she had gotten picked to be in there. She was wearing the golden pin on her breast pocket, Madge thinking the bird looked like Kat, she about to take flight with her arrow quiver in view ; crouching by the river, as the sky glowed.
Katniss broke into a tentative smile, placing the tray down on the table. "Madge, it's good to see you." She took a seat across Madge.
Madge closes her eyes at the memory, and then opens.
She wanders in the square, she having heard Katniss was the victor, along with Peeta. She was glad they had survived the game. She looks up and sees parachutes floating from the sky.
There was a new package that arrived at the town square of District 2. Revealed in it were some new items and plenty of quality bread from the Capitol, as the Capitol favoured this district more than the others. It was a strong district, which specialised in stone and masonry ; they helping build buildings in the Capitol and around districts.
Clove hurried down to the town square and grabbed some bread and a spear before heading to Cato's house. "Cato, I have some Capitol bread!" She was wearing black hair, and could throw knives well.
"Clove, we have to beat this girl at her own game." Cato narrowed his eyes in concentration and started punching aggressively at the red punching bag outside his home. "The girl, Katniss Everdeen." He also went out in the mountains to find out if he could survive, strengthening his body and mind.
Clove put her hands on her hips. "Yeah, I know, Cato. It'll be a bit of a challenge to kill her, though," they surviving the first Hunger Games, yet not without repercussions. This game was about the champions going in. Cato was now part mutt, morphing into a werewolf, and back to human, he being bitten in an overwhelming attack at the cornucopia. He fought them off valiantly, seeing the mutts as tributes he could not trust.
He experienced pain a lot, he howling in distress, and Clove, hearing her love, comforts him.
She had a skull fracture from Thresh placing an axe on her. He was angry at what they did to Rue, she now sleeping on a bed of flowers and roses. There were waves of earthquaking pain in her, she going to hospital, and they seeing the bones that broke her forehead. They setting it as best they could, as well as placing an ice pack on her head. They said for her to take care of herself, and she did, with understanding her own feeling of darkness and revenge and justice and injustice. This understanding helped with being around her surroundings, which she could feel the pain of most ardently.
Cato snorted, not pausing in his punching, yet he agreed. They would be there for each other, the two of them.
Madge sees the girl Katniss on screen, she saying she was the Mockingjay and with the rebels of the Thirteenth District. She herself is still alive, managing to escape the bombings of the districts, the Capitol angered by her rebellion. Her father had died, the mayor, she saddened in grief.
She hoped her friends were simply okay from war.
Horrific images started playing in Octavia's mind, as she sits in the underground; including imagining Cinna, Peeta's prep team and all those murdered in the hands of the ruthless Peacekeepers and President Snow. She was once a member of the prep team for Katniss, she being a mere tribute and known as a grey eyed girl in the Seam, who hunted quietly in the woods. She thought the Hunger Games an interesting show to watch, tributes going into the arena and honing their skills against obstacles; a survival of the fittest, which sent a thrill of excitement through her.
She now couldn't believe how corrupted President Snow was, which was revealed when Katniss openly started rebelling against the Capitol and became the Mockingjay. She saw Peeta's blood – she remembering a humble boy who baked delicious bread – splattered on the screen in dripping red, as he was interviewed by Caesar Flickerman. All the Capitol's truly evil deeds were well covered up and portrayed only in a positive way for the Capitol citizens including her, all those seventy-five years the Games were aired!
She brushed a loose strand of auburn hair from her light pea green forehead to behind her ear. She had abandoned most of the makeup she used to wear back in her Capitol days as she now found to be too garish especially since she was still struggling to fit in District 13. Well, she technically found it pretty, yet someone had catcalled it garish – saying she looked like a indulgent clown.
She drank her bland vegetable soup, wishing she was allowed second helping, but unlike the Capitol, there were none given out here, in 13.
Madge touches the earth of the underground, her eyelids a shiny rainbow colour, she feeling like she was going into her roots.
Another day, another door, washed away by a wave.
A painted window shatters in the doorway ; revealing the world.
