Into the Unknown
Summary: Upon learning that he, Ragnar and Juno are the only ones out of the Dragon Riders who still long to know what's beyond the borders of the archipelago and see if there are any new dragons, Hiccup begins to hear something like a voice that further draws his desire to venture into the unknown.

WARNING: THIS ONE-SHOT IS FROM A STORY THAT HASN'T BEEN POSTED YET. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
It was night as the Misfit Trio looked over the closed cages as they stood in the middle of the empty Dragon Academy, their dragons watching them. The day started out pretty great, looking for new dragons with Astrid, since the others have their own things going on. But then, after getting pranked again by the twins, they refused to believe that their adventure is over.
That was when Astrid informed them that she was joining the Berk Guard. The Trio was happy for her and Stormfly, but they were a little saddened by the news as well. Now, it was just the Trio.
Hiccup was the one who was the most shaken up by it. He was proud and happy for his friend, who was also the girl he had a crush on since forever, but it was really hard to believe that this was all there was to their world. There just had to be more out there. After all, Juno and her mother were from somewhere outside the archipelago when they first arrived on Berk when the former was just an infant. That was definite proof that there was more out there than they believe.
If only the other Riders would understand that. But now, it was just the Trio against the world, like it was back when they were fifteen. Now at age eighteen, there was just that inexplicable and undeniable urge to explore more of their world.
Hiccup walked up to Stormfly's empty cage and slowly shut it closed. Then, he turned back to his friends, both human and dragon.
"I guess it's just us now, guys." He said.
"Us against the world." Ragnar added.
"As always." Juno piped up.
Toothless, Fossil and Coccinelle agreed with low growls. "Though I have to ask, why do you two still stick with me and my pretty useless searches?" Hiccup asked his human friends. "Don't you two have your own things to do as well?"
"Yeah." Ragnar said. "I'm still learning under Gothi so that I can become the next village healer, but she somewhat understands that I'm still only eighteen, and that I want to explore and see what else is out there."
"Me, too." Juno agreed. "I may be the official minstrel of the town, but everytime I look out towards the horizon, I just feel like... there's a part of me out there."
"Right." Hiccup said. "You and your mom came from beyond the border."
"Maybe you can get some more clues about where you came from before you and your mother came to Berk." Ragnar piped in.
"Exactly." Juno said. "This can't be all that there is."
Just then, Ragnar yawned and stretched up his arms. "Well, we best pick up on this tomorrow." He said. "I'm beat."
"Me, too." Juno agreed.
Hiccup opened his mouth to agree, but then he heard something, making him look around in curiosity. "Ah-ah-oh-oh." It sounded like a woman singing.
"Did you guys hear that?" He asked.
Ragnar and Juno looked around in confusion. "Hear what?" Juno asked him.
"I don't hear anything." Ragnar added.
Hiccup looked around, trying to listen for that voice again. But after a few seconds, he supposed that he was probably only hearing things. "N-Never mind." He said. "Let's go get some sleep."
The other two members of the Trio looked at each other as Hiccup and Toothless left the ring. They suspected that something was bugging their best friend, something other than the other Riders now doing their own thing. But it was probably best to ask him about in the morning.
That night, the Misfit Trio were each sound asleep in their rooms, with Fossil and Coccinelle in the stables in the back, and Toothless sleeping on his bed near Hiccup's. The Haddock boy was snoozing peacefully until he heard it again.
"Ah-ah-oh-oh." Hiccup's eyes snapped open when he heard it again. He briefly sat up and looked around the room, wondering where that voice was coming from. But all he saw was Toothless, curled up on his slab bed.
Hiccup then went back under his covers to go back to sleep. But just as he got comfy, he heard it again. "Ah-ah-oh-oh."
He lightly groaned so that he didn't wake up his dragon and covered his head with his pillow to block out that voice. But he still heard it. Upon hearing it three more times, he eventually got out of bed, carefully stepping as lightly as he could so that he doesn't wake up Toothless, and left his room.
Voice: Ah-ah-oh-oh.
Ah-ah-oh-oh.
Ah-ah-oh-oh-oh-oh.
Once he was outside his room and out of earshot of his dragon, he quietly began to sing.
Hiccup: I can hear you,
But I won't.
Some look for trouble
While others don't.
There's a thousand reasons
I should go about my day,
And ignore your whispers,
Which I wish would go away, oh-oh-oh.
That enchanting voice seemed to respond to him as he slowly headed downstairs.
Voice: Ah-ah-oh-oh.
Hiccup: Oh-oh.
Voice: Ah-ah-oh-oh.
He looked around the dark living area, slightly holding his head as if he tried to shut out the voice that was calling to him. Then, he looked to where his father was sleeping, then back upstairs where his friends and his dragon were dreaming away.
Hiccup: You're not a voice.
You're just a ringing in my ear.
And if I heard you, which I don't,
I'm spoken for, I fear.
Everyone I've ever loved
Is here within these walls.
I'm sorry, secret siren,
But I'm blocking out your calls.
Then, Hiccup went outside and quietly shut the door behind him as he headed towards the outskirts of the village and stared out towards the ocean.
I've had my adventure,
And even though I want something new,
I'm afraid of what I'm risking
If I follow you
Into the unknown.
Into the unknown.
Into the unknown!
Voice: Ah-ah-oh-oh.
Ah-ah-oh-oh-oh-oh.
The Pride of Berk sighed as he headed off into the forest, looking around to see if there was any sign of where that voice was coming from.
Hiccup: What do you want?
'Cause you've been keeping me awake.
Are you here to distract me
So I make a big mistake?
Then, he was in the cove, looking around as memories came back to him. First training Toothless, then having all those tests for the first prosthetic tailfin with Ragnar and Juno, all while learning more and more about dragon behavior that came in handy in the ring, and then, their first official test flight. Then Astrid discovering them and they went after her to help her see the truth about dragons. A smile then briefly came on his face at all those memories.
But the smile faded as he stared into the pond, looking down at his reflection. As he analyzed every detail about himself, he remembered how he wished that there was someone out there like you. Ragnar and Juno were the only ones who truly understood him before their dragons came along, but sometimes, he wondered why he was so different in the first place.
He supposed he took more after his mother than his father, but he never knew her before she was taken by dragons, most likely to be eaten. If he did know her, maybe he would've found another kindred spirit in her, someone who can understand his longing to explore beyond the borders of the archipelago.
Or are you someone out there
Who's a little bit like me?
Who knows deep down
I'm not where I'm meant to be?
Hiccup moved away from the pond and then left the cove. Just then, he thought he saw something in the near distance. Something that was bright and blue. He carefully headed towards it and saw something amazing. It was a bright ball of light that seemed to be floating in the air. It seemed to pulsate with life as it zoomed over towards him and then split into three smaller orbs. Then, all three headed past him and into a fog bank. Hiccup followed them, his curiosity eating away at him.
Every day's a little harder
As I feel this power grow.
Don't you know there's part of me
That longs to go
Into the unknown?
Into the unknown.
Into the unknown!
Hiccup saw little shapes and figures of dragons all around him after he had entered the fog bank as he looked around in wonder. That must have been a land spirit that he encountered. Mythical spirits of the forest, sea, earth and sky that can bless or curse whoever they cross paths with. Well, this wasn't a curse, that's for sure, but maybe this spirit was trying to tell him something.
Voice: Ah-ah-oh-oh.
Ah-ah-oh-oh.
Hiccup: Oh-oh-oh.
Are you out there?
Do you know me?
Can you feel me?
Can you show me?
The light formed a ring of fire around like there was a line of Fireworm dragons circling around him. Sometimes, there would be a flickering flame that took the form of a different Stoker class dragon, like a Terrible Terror or a Monstrous Nightmare, or even a Typhoomerang.
Ah-ah-oh-oh. (Voice: Ah-ah-oh-oh.)
Ah-ah-oh-oh. (Ah-ah-oh-oh.)
Then, there was some Tidal Class dragons appearing, as if they were breaching the surface. There were Scauldrons and Thunderdrums and other kinds that he'd never seen before. Then, there were Boulder Class dragons appearing above him. There were mostly Gronckles, but he did see a couple of Whispering Deaths and other kinds of dragons he never saw before. After that, there were many other dragons zipping all around him; Terrible Terrors, Deadly Nadders, Monstrous Nightmares, and other kinds of unknown dragons.
Oh-oh-oh-oh!
Oh-oh-oh-oh!
Oh-oh-oh-oh! (Oh-oh-oh-oh!)
Then, all of the images of the hordes of dragons blended into one and began skipping across the air towards a cliff. The Trio's special childhood cliff. Hiccup began chasing after it until he was near the edge of the cliff, his hand outstretched towards the ocean as if he wanted to touch the horizon.
Where are you going?
Don't leave me alone
How do I follow you
Into the unknown? (Oh-oh-oh!)
After his finishing note, Hiccup saw that the spirit had returned, floating in front of him, and then it split into seven circular pieces. Each of them represented a different class of dragon. Hiccup easily recognized the symbols that were shown.
"Stoker, Boulder, Fear, Sharp, Tidal, Mystery, Strike." He identified before all seven came into one again, this time taking the form of a cylindrical shape, having the face of a dragon at one end. Then, the spirit vanished into thin air, leaving Hiccup alone on the cliff.
His breathing was starting to get slightly heavy at what just happened. If this was a sign that there is more out beyond the borders of the archipelago, then he'll take it. He might share this experience with only Toothless for now. If he ever encountered the land spirit again, then maybe he could share it with Ragnar and Juno. But until then, as he waits for the next opportunity to explore outside the archipelago, he'll wait until it's time to finally get back out there and venture into the unknown.
A/N: I just had to use this song here once I heard the full version! It's absolutely amazing! The song is "Into the Unknown" from the new movie, "Frozen 2". I just saw it in theaters a couple of days and it was incredible. But I don't own it in any way.
My version of "Riders of Berk" is still taking freaking forever, but I'm trying to finish it with a new strategy. But no promises, though. I want to finish it and head further on into the franchise. I'll keep working on it, I promise.
Until then, I'll see y'all! Please leave a review about what you think. And if you have any suggestions, please leave a review or PM me. I'll take one more suggestion before I get into the final stretches for finishing this collection of one-shots!
Got to fly! ;)
