This had to be the hardest thing Hiccup ever had to do in his life. He had never done anything like this without Toothless by his side. He used to think that he was nothing but a screw-up until he had met the dragon that would become one of his greatest friends he had ever known.
But now that Grimmel had taken all of their dragons, since Toothless didn't want to risk the life of his beautiful mate, a Light Fury, he didn't put up a fight. Hiccup knew that he did the right thing, but it hurt because he was powerless to do anything to prevent it from happening.
But thanks to the reassuring words from Astrid, Ragnar and Juno, Hiccup learned that Toothless was just the key to help him find the strength that had been inside him all along; his dragon just made it easier to recognize. Now, he needs that strength to rescue all of their dragons and stop Grimmel once and for all. After that, then the dragons will have to leave, but they'll be safer in the Hidden World, where they will remain until people can finally learn that they and dragons can live in peace.
However, first things first, the Dragon Riders need to launch an attack on Grimmel's armada and save the dragons. Everyone had been preparing for their battle, grabbing weapons and making sure that their flight armor was in good shape and ready to fly. Hiccup was feeling better than he had been a few minutes ago, thanks to his friends', and girlfriend's, reassurance. But there was still something negative nagging in the back of his head. So he had left the clearing to try and attempt to have some time alone in the forest.
After stopping to rest on a large tree that had been uprooted, he suddenly had the memory of when he first met Toothless six years ago. The way that the tree had positioned was almost similar to the destroyed tree that he found before he met his Night Fury friend. A little prick of sadness pierced his heart as he slowly brushed his fingers against the trunk of the moss-covered tree.
"Hiccup?" The familiar voice of his adoptive brother Ragnar, got him to turn around to see both him and Ragnar's girlfriend, Juno, walking up to them. "You doing okay?"
Hiccup was ready to come up with an excuse, saying that he was fine. But those two know him better than anyone. They'll see right through it, so why even bother trying to lie to them? He then sighed.
"I guess I'm just still a little on edge." He answered.
"Is this about Toothless?" Juno asked.
"Yeah." Hiccup replied. "But it's also because, well, I'm the Chief of our tribe; we had to relocate so that we can be safe, but I never really had to deal with something this extreme before."
"Rescuing Dad from Dagur, fighting against the Dragon Hunters and Flyers, and Drago's army doesn't fit into that category?" Ragnar asked.
"Oh, they do." Hiccup said. "But I think this has to be on the top of that list."
"Yeah." Juno agreed. "At least you still have us. We've been together since we were kids, and we've stuck together ever since. We've overcome many things and fought our own fair share of wars, but this is a battle that will determine our legacy."
"We believe that dragons are our friends, not our enemies." Ragnar added. "And we have to fight for that belief, even if we don't have our dragons to help us this time."
Hiccup nodded. "It's just... kind of hard to believe that... I'm really capable of doing this alone. Without Toothless. It's almost like...without him, I'm back to who I was before I met him. A useless misfit."
"Well, I think we all have learned that being misfits isn't entirely a bad thing." Juno said. "Certainly comes with the element of surprise and with thinking outside of the box."
"That's true." Ragnar agreed with her before turning back to Hiccup. "So what's really holding you back, brother?"
Hiccup was silent for a few seconds before turning around and then hoisting himself up on top of the tree and stood on top of it. As he looked around the wooded area, his mind instinctively recognized the crystal pendant that he had never taken off since that day before the final battle with Drago. He could feel it around his neck and under his dragon armor.
Feeling something stir inside of him, Hiccup resorted to the second best way he knew how to express his deepest feelings. He closed his eyes briefly, and then opened them again, along with his mouth as he started to sing.
Hiccup: War is not freedom.
Over my shoulder,
I see a clearer view.
Thoughts of his father, his mother, and the other people, or dragons, who he considered to be his family, rushed through his mind.
All for my family,
Reason I'm breathing;
Everything to lose.
He then jumped down from the tree and stared down in a nearby puddle of water, looking at his reflection.
Should I ask myself in the water
What a warrior would do?
Tell me, underneath my armor,
Am I loyal, brave and true?
Am I loyal, brave and true?
Ragnar and Juno silently watched their friend and then came over to stand next to him. The latter then placed a hand on his shoulder, joining him in song.
Juno: Losing is easy,
Winning takes bravery.
I am a dragon's fool.
Ragnar then picked it up, joining them in their singing while also beckoning both his girlfriend and foster brother to follow him deeper into the woods. Smiling softly, they followed him until they found the same lake where Toothless attempted to impress the Light Fury.
Ragnar: Out in the open,
No one to save me;
The kindest of whispers are cruel.
All three of them looked over into their respective reflections in the calm water, each of them thinking back when they were considered to be the Misfits of Berk because they were different. Thanks to their dragon friends, they became so much more than that. Hiccup now was the Chief of Berk against all odds, with Ragnar as his second-in-command, since he was technically next in line for the chieftainship since they were brothers, but not by blood.
Juno had learned that she was born into a clan that hated dragons more than normal Vikings; the Dragon Hunters, but she overcame that horrifying past and set out to restore a new honor for them once she decided to become the Chieftess of the now Dragon Liberators after Viggo's death. To everyone's surprise, there were some Dragon Hunters that were actually on board with her plans, while there were some others that needed some convincing. And of course, some left the tribe altogether, but that didn't deter the newly christened Dragon Liberators.
All: Should I ask myself in the water
What a warrior would do?
Tell me, underneath my armor
Am I loyal, brave and true?
Am I loyal, brave and true?
Realizing how far they all have come, they were now feeling more than ready to take on what was sure to be their greatest and most important mission ever. Feeling that surge of energy and confidence, the Misfit Trio shared a glance of determination before immediately heading back over to the clearing where the other Dragon Riders were getting assembled, running and jumping over logs and rocks.
Ragnar: Cold is the morning,
Warm is the dream.
Juno: Chasing the answers
'Til I can't sleep!
Hiccup: Will I be stronger
Or will I be weak
All: When you're not with me?
When they had reached the edge of the clearing, they all were panting to regain their breath. Hiccup then looked up at the growing twilight in the sky, thoughts of both his father and Toothless in his mind.
Hiccup: Who am I without my armor,
Standing in my father's shoes?
All I know is that it's harder
To be loyal, brave and true.
Feeling much more ready to take on this final challenge, Hiccup's eyes glinted with determination as he looked over at his friends. They smiled back at him knowingly, silently assuring him that they were with him the whole way. They always had, and they always will. Then, the three of them headed over back to their team to go over the plan to free all of their dragons.
A/N: Whew! Just in time for Thanksgiving over here in the States. I had a good time today, spending it with my family and relatives that we were lucky enough to visit. Along with my aunt and two of my cousins that were visiting from Italy! After we almost passed out from stuffing ourselves, we just spent the rest of the day playing games and watching movies.
I know that this one-shot isn't quite that long either, but I did spend all afternoon writing this. And last time, the website didn't have any technical problems like what happened at Halloween. That one-shot, "Queen of Mean", is available to read, in case you guys haven't realized.
The song I used for this one is "Loyal Brave True" from the live-action remake of "Mulan". The original animated film was one of my favorite Disney movies growing up, and this live-action remake was pretty awesome, too. However, I don't know the song in any way or form. All credit goes to their rightful owners.
One more to go! And this one; well, it's a surprise. Think of it as a Christmas present from me to you guys. I will give you guys a hint, though. We started the collection with a song that came from it, and we'll end it just the same. Think you guys knows? Let me know your guesses in the reviews.
Until then, I'll see y'all! Please leave a review about what you think. And remember to stay healthy! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Got to fly! ;)
