Sarah stared blankly around the room. She really didn't want to be here. She could see Daniel on the stage, smiling and flirty with every other pretty woman on set. It made Sarah's stomach turn. The guy had absolutely no tact whatsoever! What kind of person dumps someone on a Friday afternoon and then comes into work on Monday morning flirting with anything that moved, or at least anything female that moved. Sarah was of half a mind to punch him in the face and storm out.
But that wasn't possible. He was still the lead in this movie and she was still just his co-stars stunt double.
"Stupid job, makes stupid money," Sarah grumbled under her breath. "Pay stupid rent."
In a different industry, Sarah wondered if maybe she could get away with punching someone and only losing the one job. But the movie world was small, and word travelled fast. Once she got labelled as dramatic or a problem, she'd never get another job in her field again, and Sarah didn't think the punch would be worth the career change.
Even so, she couldn't help but grind her teeth as she watched him lean in and likely whisper into some woman's ear on the other side of the room.
She was saved from having to witness whatever they had planned next, when the lighting guys announced they were ready, and someone called action. Sarah watched as her ex-boyfriend started his scene. His character was searching for his lover who was lost in the jungle. Once he found her, that was when Sarah would have to jump in and be the double for his co-star.
Sarah liked the woman she was stunt doubling. Carina was a bit wild, but really fun and a loyal friend. She did, however, have brown hair which is why Sarah, a blonde, had to wear a wig for all her stunt scenes. It wasn't so bad, though in warm weather it did tend to get a bit itchy.
Then Sarah was switched out for Carina when it came time for her character to fall and land without breaking anything. She performed the stunt and the director was happy with the first take so he called cut.
Apart from meeting huge jerks, Sarah really loved her job. It was a way to be part of the movie biz without losing your anonymity. She got to meet famous people, travel, learn new skills and play with fancy gadgets like the complicated harness and pulley system in the scene last week when Carina had to jump farther than a human is capable of jumping.
Overall, not a bad deal. Sarah had fallen in love with martial arts as a child and then as an adult had done her best to make a career out of it.
When she was called up to do the next stunt scene, she had to do it three times before the director was satisfied. The first time someone had coughed at the wrong time and then the director had asked her to turn in a different way to hit the light better.
Then, Sarah was sitting on the sidelines again while they tried to get the next scene set up. She couldn't help but look at Daniel who had moved on from flirting with the extras to flirting with one of the crew. Sarah didn't recognize the woman. All she could tell from this distance. was that the crew member in question wasn't a natural blonde.
A few minutes later, to her horror, Daniel seemed to notice her staring. He started walking towards her and Sarah wished the ground would jump up and swallow her whole. Oh, why did he have to be so attractive? It should be illegal to look that good and be that much of a jerk.
"Don't look so gloomy," he told her with a fake smile on his face. "I have a proposition for you."
"A proposition?" Sarah asked, very sure she'd hate whatever this idea was, even before he said it.
Daniel smiled, in the smoulder way guys do when they know they are hot shit. Sarah knew she'd been fooled by that look before, but now it just made her feel sick.
"I notice you've been staring," he smiled at her. "Just because we broke up doesn't mean I still don't find you attractive." He turned and gestured to the girl he'd just been flirting with who was still standing a few feet behind him, beaming and totally forgetting that she was supposed to be working. "And I thought it would be fun to invite you to join us." The inflection of his voice left no doubt as to his meaning. Daniel was inviting her to have a threeway with her and the unnaturally blonde crew member he'd just seduced. Sarah's desire to punch him increased ten fold, and she was quite possibly more nauseated than before.
"As much fun as that sounds," Sarah said sharply, trying to hold back her anger. "I don't think my boyfriend would be happy about it."
"Oh, I did not realise you were seeing someone," Daniel replied. She could tell once again by his voice that he hated the idea of her being with someone else. The jealousy in his voice was obvious, and yet it made no sense. He'd been the one to dump her although Sarah was extremely glad about it now.
"Oh, ah yeah," Sarah continued, revelling in his distaste. "He's very possessive. Sorry. I'm taken."
"I must meet this man," Daniel declared.
"That really isn't necessary," Sarah replied. What she wanted more than anything was to tell him to go to hell, but she also didn't want to become that angry girl who can't work with her ex. Stunt doubles were far more replaceable than the leading man.
"I mean it," he pushed. "You should invite him to the set."
"As I said, not necessary," Sarah repeated herself. She was trying to discourage him politely when all she really wanted to do was punch him in the face.
"I'm happy for you," Daniel said, with a smile, but Sarah could sense an underlying annoyance. He was in no way happy for her. In fact, he was pissed.
"Thanks," Sarah said awkwardly. She was hoping at this point that Daniel would leave, but instead he just stood here. When Sarah couldn't take it anymore she spoke up.
"Umm… aren't you expected somewhere," Sarah tried to drop a hint. "I think you left her hanging." Sarah gestured once again to the woman he'd been flirting with, before coming over to talk to Sarah.
"Oh yes, quite right," Daniel said all charm again though Sarah knew it to be fake. "I guess I'll just have to wait to meet this man at the wrap party."
Before she could tell him no, indeed before she could so much as open her mouth to speak, he'd turned and walked away, giving her not even the slightest chance to reject his idea. Sarah threw her head back and groaned. How the hell had she gotten herself into such a ridiculous situation? After all, she was an intelligent woman. College graduate and all that; yet somehow she'd let that jerk get to her enough to come up with such a stupid lie.
Deciding that she needed some space if she was going to get through this day, Sarah moved away from the set and towards the food table. There she ran into one of the other stunt doubles.
"The mini quiches are back," John was saying as she walked up. "I love the mini quiches."
Sarah couldn't help but smile. Working with John had been one of the perks of this job. He was a reliable and capable coworker, as well as being a good friend. Unlike her, John was ex-military and worked both as a consultant on the military aspects of the movie, as well as being a stunt double for the antagonist character.
"Quiches are good," Sarah agreed as she walked up beside him.
John obviously hadn't realized he'd been being observed. He turned, brows furrowed until he noticed who it was.
"Oh hey," he said. Then he seemed to take in her mood. "You okay?"
"Not really," Sarah replied. One of the wonderful things about being friends with John was the fact that he never asked follow up questions. Instead he grunted and offered her some quiche.
John was older than her, but not so much older he could be her father, at least not within reason. He had the look of a marine. Strong, stoic and rough around the edges. She also had sensed a good core in him, but she knew he'd never admit it.
Even while standing there not opening up to her friend about what was wrong, Sarah couldn't help but think about all the things she wasn't telling him.
She assumed Daniel would likely forget her little lie by the wrap party. After all, they did have a few more weeks left of filming. Even so, it rubbed her the wrong way that he'd even wanted to meet this fictional boyfriend of hers.
And even with him forgetting about her little fib, she was still facing weeks of working alongside this man without any means of escape. Her mother had warned her not to date her coworkers. Well she'd learned her lesson.
Maybe the simple solution here was to find a date for the stupid party. Of course, if this hypothetical date answered the question of when they met honestly, then Daniel would know she'd lied to save face and the whole situation would be even worse.
Urg! She just so wished she didn't care. She wished even more that she'd never dated the idiot.
Her last on-set boyfriend, Bryce, had also been an actor, but at least he'd been nicer. They'd broken up because when the movie wrapped, he'd moved back to Greece. Ending relationships was never fun, but at least that had been a mature, respectful parting. It hadn't gotten that serious and, though Sarah hadn't wanted to end it, she hadn't been devastated either.
With Daniel it was different. She was beyond glad that was over, but the aftermath was proving to be devastating. Who knew the guy would be a worse ex-boyfriend than he'd been a boyfriend. They hadn't even dated as long as her and Bryce.
With a sigh, Sarah reached out and took another quiche or two. This was going to be a long couple weeks. The plan was to keep her head down and do her job and not make waves.
Her plan was totally ruined a little over a week later, when she walked past the director and he stopped to congratulate her. Confused, Sarah asked why.
"Because of your new boyfriend of course," he answered. The director, Robert, was pushing sixty with a receding hairline. He usually wore rectangular black glasses and could be counted on to be in good spirits most of the time.
"I don't ha-" Sarah began but then she remembered the lie she'd told. "I didn't realise people knew."
"It's a small set," he replied. "Good news travels fast."
"Right," Sarah said, trying to be cool rather than panicked.
"Everyone is looking forward to meeting him at the wrap party," he continued.
"Why?" Sarah asked.
"Everyone likes you, Sarah," the director smiled at her. "You are always fun to work with." He paused, then added in a more serious voice, "And just because there's nothing I can do about it, doesn't mean I haven't noticed how horrible Daniel's been treating you. I kinda wanna see him get knocked down a peg."
"Oh," Sarah replied, doing her best to keep her emotions in check. It was a good thing she had a lot of practice.
"He didn't used to be like that," the director continued. "Before his wife died he was actually a decent human being. I wouldn't have even hired him again if this wasn't a sequel. It's hard to make a second movie without the leading man people remember."
"I didn't know his wife died," Sarah said, sincerely sorry for the guy.
"Yeah, right after we wrapped on the first movie. I don't know exactly how it happened, but when I saw him next, he was like a totally different person," the director explained. "It's no excuse for being cruel, but I thought you should at least know he wasn't always like that."
"Thanks," Sarah said.
Just then someone called for the director. "Never a dull moment," he laughed before saying goodbye and getting back to work.
This was bad. If people found out she lied, it would ruin her credibility. She had to bring a boyfriend to the wrap party, despite the fact that she hadn't even been on a date since Daniel dumped her.
It was too late to just start dating a guy and take him. People thought they'd been going out for well over a week now. They were sure to ask this guy when they met and everything would be ruined. No, to keep her integrity at this point, Sarah needed a cover boyfriend. Someone who would say what she wanted and hang on her arm all night. She couldn't help wondering if such a thing could be ordered on Amazon. Somehow, she doubted it.
A part of her hoped everyone would just forget over the next week, but it only got worse. More people pulled her aside telling her they were happy for her.
When the party was a mere two days away, Sarah lost all hope that people would forget. The idea of calling in sick to the whole party was looking better and better every minute. Claim you're throwing up non-stop, and no one expects you to attend events. She could start acting sick the day before and no one would be the wiser.
She all but decided on this plan, when the reality of it sunk in. It felt wrong to give Daniel the satisfaction of winning when she didn't show up. Maybe the director was right and this was an opportunity to put him in his place. Sarah wanted to beat Daniel at his own game. She wanted to win the break up, as cheesy as that sounded.
There was really nothing else for it. She just had to find somebody to come to the party with her.
Then it hit her. Sarah knew exactly where she could find a guy without a date for this Saturday.
Less than an hour later, Sarah walked through the double doors and into the store. It didn't take her long to spot the Nerd Herd booth. Ignoring the rest of the store, she headed right for the nerds.
There were two guys at the booth. One tall, not unattractive, one who was on the phone and looking down at something. The other was clearly not part of the tech team as he was wearing a green sales shirt. He also had a thick beard and was clearly talking to the taller guy dressed in a crisp white shirt with a grey tie. As Sarah approached, she overheard their conversation.
"The way you charged into that fort and took out those bandits was bad ass," the bearded one was saying with enthusiasm. "I should have been the barbarian. The wizard is turning out to be too complicated."
"If I recall correctly, I told you that when you chose the wizard," the taller guy replied without looking up.
"But those spells looked so cool," the other one whined.
"Cool, yes, but also hard to pull off and wizards are weak at close range," the taller one continued. Then suddenly he looked up to address the bearded one and everything shifted.
The taller guy in the grey tie dropped the phone he'd been holding to his ear with just one raised shoulder. The binder he'd been looking down at fell, as well. Both men were staring at her like she was some kind of imaginary creature. Sarah felt a little bit like a unicorn.
Sarah decided going with the flow of her interruption would be better than pretending she had any idea what they'd been talking about.
"Hi," the taller one said rather slowly, as if in shock or something.
"Hello," Sarah smiled.
"H-how can I help you?" the one with the grey tie asked. Sarah looked and noticed that he had a name tag on. It read Chuck.
"Well, Chuck," Sarah replied. "If you actually want to know, I have a very strange problem, and I was hoping you could be my solution."
"We are made of solutions here at the Buy More," Chuck answered.
"See the issue is that I told a tiny lie to my jerk of an ex and now everyone I work with thinks it's true, and if I don't make it true, well let's just say it might affect my chances when I apply for my next job."
"Oh, wow, okay so not a typical nerd herd problem," Chuck replied.
"No, sorry," Sarah admitted.
"We usually deal with more computer based issues," Chuck continued. "Phones, laptops, servers type stuff." His voice kinda trailed off. Sarah wasn't sure if she should keep explaining or if her 'find a desperate date at the Buy More' plan was a failure.
"But we are more than happy to branch out!" the bearded one said loudly, slapping Chuck on the back.
"Right, yes," Chuck said as if coming out of some kind of daze. "Please keep going. What was the lie and how do you think we can help?"
"I told my ex that I had a possessive new boyfriend," Sarah admitted. "I know it's a long shot, but I'm looking for someone willing to pretend to be my boyfriend for this big work party thing on Saturday. There's free food involved, and my undying gratitude."
She did her best to be flirty as she looked up at Chuck. It was rare she got to look up at men, as she was over five nine. For Sarah to look up at him, Chuck had to be at least six feet tall.
"Oh, that sounds like fun!" the bearded one exclaimed. For a moment Sarah was worried he'd volunteer, but then he turned to Chuck and said. "You should totally do this."
"What?" Chuck said, turning to his friend.
"I mean how can you not? Just look at her. This is like a real damsel-in-distress situation! What would Carmichael do?"
"Morgan, we aren't playing Dungeons and Dragons right now," Chuck said calmly. "I am not my DnD character and this is real life."
"And this real life woman needs your help," Morgan began. "No adventurer worth their name could turn down such a request."
Chuck seemed a bit confused, so Sarah decided to press her advantage.
"Umm… if it helps, my name is Sarah Walker," Sarah continued. "I'm a stunt double for that big movie they've been filming down main street this past week. I have a business card. You can google me."
Sarah saw Morgan pull out his phone and start googling.
"Oh my god!" Morgan exclaimed a second later. "That's the movie with Carina Miller in it!"
"She's the main female lead," Sarah explained. "And I'm her stunt double."
"Chuck you have to do this so I can meet Carina Miller!" Morgan exclaimed. "She's the one I have a poster of from that movie Batwoman and the evil catsuit!"
"So you said there's food?" Chuck inquired. "At this not-a-date?"
"It's a big wrap party to celebrate us finishing the filming," Sarah explained. "It's catered."
"Count me in," Chuck said. "And you don't have to introduce Morgan to your coworker. You can just ignore him."
"I don't mind," Sarah replied. "This would really help me out, so it's all good."
"You said it was Saturday, right?" Chuck asked. Sarah confirmed and told him the time. "The dress code is casual formal, so even just a suit jacket should be fine."
"I think I can swing that," Chuck replied.
"Perfect," Sarah smiled. "Do you want to meet at the party then, or should I pick you up?"
"If this is a real date I would like to pick you up," Chuck replied. "If this is a fake date, so my friend can meet his idol and you can save face at work, then I'll meet you there."
"Whichever would make you more comfortable is fine by me," Sarah replied with a smile. "Just so long as we can tell people we met two Saturdays ago and have been going out since."
"I'll meet you there, then," Chuck said. "Where is it exactly?" Sarah gave him the name of the hotel. "Okay. See you then."
"See you then," Sarah echoed. She wasn't really sure what to do next, but was saved from having to find out by the nerd herd phone ringing. Chuck answered it and repeated the store's custom greeting.
Opening up her wallet, Sarah got out one of her business cards and wrote her phone number on it. She left it on the counter for Chuck before turning and exiting the store the way she'd come in.
Even if it was just for one party, Sarah found herself rather intrigued by Chuck. He was interesting in a wholesome kinda way. It was strange, but all of a sudden she was kinda looking forward to Saturday.
Okay so here I go again starting a new story before I finish old ones! I've already written a fake boyfriend story for a different fandom and realized it would be fun to do something similar for Chuck and Sarah! Hope you like it. ^_^ Unlike my last re-write of an old story, this one is going to need alot more re-writing but I think it will be worth it.
I don't seem to be able to stop myself from re-writing old stories into Chuck stories. It's just so fun even if it feels a bit like cheating. ;)
Also this story is set in Vancouver Canada. I tired to work that into this chapter but it didn't seem to fit so it will likely get worked into a later one.
Sneak Peek Chapter 2
The ceiling was high, and right at the center of it hovering over everything was a stunning crystal chandelier. It was smaller where it was attached to the ceiling, but fanned out with long beams of glistening crystal linking the two rings and dangling down at the bottom. Below the chandelier was the dance floor though no one was currently dancing. Instead all the cast and crew were standing around drinking what looked to be champagne out of tiny flouts. Around the edges of the room were small round tables with high crystal vases filled with white roses. Near the tables and scattered about the room were men and women dressed like butlers holding silver trays of more champagne flutes and what looked to be finger food.
"Wow," Chuck whispered.
"I know what you mean," Sarah replied. "These things can be big. The last one I went to had a three tier chocolate fountain that was pretty spectacular."
They walked past a woman carrying a food tray, and Chuck took three of whatever was there, eating them all quite quickly. "Those are delicious!" he exclaimed.
Sarah was glad Chuck looked to be having a good time. She'd hate to have dragged the poor guy here, just to make him miserable.
