A/N: OK so this one was inspired by a few people who compared Ethan to Alex Mercer from Prototype. And It sparks my curiosity on an idea. Like, what if Ethan somehow got the power of Alex Mercer? And how would that affect his journey, or even Ethan himself.
Don't get me wrong, I like Ethan just the way he is in the canon, just a man trying his damndest to save his loved ones. But this is part of one of those 'What If's' stories that could well be either disastrous or fun.
Mercer's POV
I cannot remember when was the last time I have felt whole. Ever since I've seen the rest of my me have been consumed by that bastard Heller, things have died down for a few years. The mutations are no longer here, New York has slowly -but surely- pulls itself back together, and Heller…. Oh Heller, he left with his daughter, Maya, out of the states. Leaving the country for God knows where.
And there's me. The only remaining part of my existence, which is nothing more than an ounce of biomass that was left from the battle.
It would have been easy for me to reform back, if it weren't for the fact that I was in a glass box being transported by some men.
But nonetheless, I can't do anything in my current state. With the amount of damage that I've taken from the fight, and without any form of biomass to consume, I'm pretty much useless. And judging from them, they heard of me and know what I'm capable of.
THIRD POV (March, 3, 2017, Washington )
"How is the test subject going?" A scientist said to his co-worker as they observed the photo of their little guinea pig. The test subject was a decomposed corpse, with its arms completely detached, it's head being split within three ways, some sort of fungus that were spread from the stomach then across the chest. It's clothes consisted of a torn out auto mechanic uniform, having the top portion being ripped in half leaving the bottom somewhat intact. The test subject's face was unrecognizable as it was covered by black and red veins, wards, and decomposing skin and blood.
"Another failed attempt." Doctor Arvo, the scientist's co-worker, said with a frustrated scowl. He slammed the photo and shut the file that was labeled 'Hound #54' before he rubs his temple roughly. "No matter how many attempts we have tried, the results are always the same. Dead, out of control, explodes, or the virus was too much! "
Chiban look at Arvo would be an understanding expression. It's been years since the Mercer virus had nearly disappeared, leaving the once great, bustling streets of New York into the remnants of a war zone. No infected, no Alex Mercer or James Heller, and no Blacklight Virus can be seen throughout the city. Even the heavily infected areas that are around Penn Station have zero residual of the Blacklight Virus.
All except the very little one that they somehow managed to get a hold of.
They manage to locate the source where all the biomass had been consumed and manage to grab a sample of it. Probably the last known sample of the 'Mercer Virus' that is left. There was Heller, but they knew that they stood no chance of taking him on, let alone capture him.
So they have to make due with what they have.
"Is there any news?" Chiban asked.
"No. They tried to locate Heller or any known leads on him, but nothin." Arvo scowled. "At this rate we'll be using the last remaining of the Mercer Virus."
Chiban shifted his gaze from Arvo to the heavily secured glass container. Inside the container, hold the last piece of orange, red and black biomass that is sitting there. It's tentacles are pulsing with movement as red infected fungus lay around the area where it had stayed. Chiban grimaces at it, as if it had eyes towards him before turning to Arvo.
"Want to get something to eat?" Chiban said.
"Why not? I need a break after working with this..." Arvo said as they made they're way to the cafeteria. They have been working on the Mercer Virus for a number of years now. Learning, experimenting, and testing it as they try their damndest to incorporate it with the C-virus. Thinking that if they can manage to combine them, then they can surely make the perfect bio-weapon that Umbrella always wanted.
But the biggest obstacle was that the collective data of the Mercer virus had been destroyed and the only possible remnants of it are in Blackwatch and Gentek. Both organizations who was destroyed years ago and were buried deep by the government. Hoping that people would forget them ever existed while the remnants of New York and the citizens piece itself back together.
There is also a fact that the Mercer Virus is also a piece of work. Normally, they wouldn't have this much security on a small piece of the virus that only weighs about a penny, but this is the Mercer Virus that they're talking about. One that had released two of the biggest outbreaks in human history.
They remember that they managed to retrieve a CCTV footage years ago of Mercer being able to reformed into perfect condition on just a single crow alone after the blast of Blackwacth's bio-weapon. Just the thought of that sent chills down their spine and unanimously decided that they had to make sure to not give it ANY leeway to regenerate.
Thank god they managed to do so by placing it into a cryogenic state and various experiments that they had conducted, were they able to make the Mercer virus pliable for them to conduct experiments on others, such as Hound.
As they made their way towards the cafeteria, alarms around the facilities went off as they heard gunfire and screams.
"WHAT THE HELL!" Arvo said as he was quickly gunned down by armoured men. Chiban got a good look at the attackers and saw tem wearing heavily armoured combat gear, black hoodies with metal wrist armour and blue lens goggles with a full face mask.
"Blackwatch soldiers!?" Chiban thought in panic as he quickly ran from them, but was easily gunned down by one of the men.
The scientist screamed in agony as he was forced to look up at the soldier before the Blackwatch soldier put a bullet on his head.
After this, the whole facilities are now filled with screams of panic and gunshots as both the BSSA and Blackwatch fought each other.
"Hold them off!" The BSSA soldier as he shoots onto the intruder.
"Why are they here anyway!"
"Don't know, but just keep them off as long as possible until backup arrives."
"I thought Blackwatch had been decommissioned years ago after Gnetek died out!" the soldier said as he ducks behind his cover and reloads his rifle.
"I thought so too, but it looks like we're wrong." the soldier said, before throwing a grenade.
As the indoor ward breaks on, a group of Blackwatch soldiers arrive in the room containing the Mercer Virus.
"This must be it." the Blackwatch soldier said. "Come on, we don't have much time before the place overfloods with backup."
The rest of his unit nodded, before placing them on the scanner.
Iyt was the hand of the now deceased Chiban.
Once the door was opened, the Blackwatch soldiers immediately went into the room, rifles drawn out, and searched the area.
'Anything?"
"negative. "
"Just keep searching. It should be here."
As they continued to look, one of the soldiers saw one of the doors was unlocked and carefully walked toward the door. Then as the barrel of his rifle is just inches to the door, the Blackwatch operative quickly went in.
He scanned the room for any signs of movements, but only found an empty lab that was stripped off to it's core.
"Capt'n." The Blackwatch soldier called out. "Check this out."
As he said it, the rest of his unit went into the room that he was in and gave it a good look.
"Damn it they took the Mercer Virus!" The leader said before he went to his ear piece.
"Walker to HQ, I regret to inform you that my men and I didn't manage to retrieve the remaining sample of the Mercer Virus."
"Call all the units and have them search the facility! They can't have gotten far to escape!" A voice roared from the other side of the communication, making Walker flinch a bit.
"Yes sir." Walker said. "All units search the facility for the person that has the Mercer Virus. I repeat, search the facility for the person holding the Virus and gun them make it quick. This place would be flooded by BSAA soldiers. Move out." And with that, Walker and the rest of his unit went in search for the Mercer Virus.
Somewhere in the facility.
A figure was running down the hallway in the facility. Fear and panic were lace around her face as she sprinted through the empty corridors with the glass container holding the Mercer Virus. Alongside her were four BSAA soldiers, with their weapons drawn as they held their gazes with vigilance.
"How much further?" the professor asked as she pants and continued to run, hoping to keep up with the soldiers.
"Not much further, once we were in the elevator it would take us to the helicopter on the roof." One of the soldiers said.
"BLACKWATCH!" His comrade shouted as he spotted several of them in front and it didn't take long for the Blackwatch soldiers to recognize them and immediately went shooting. .
"Take cover!" With that command, they used the walls while narrowly avoiding the rain of bullets. The scientist yelped when she was dragged with one of them soldiers as the bullets managed to hit the box. Thankfully it was tempered glass so she doesn't have to worry about it being .
The fight continued for a few minutes, as the Blackwatch soldiers were slowly advancing as they continued to shoot.
The BSAA looked at his comrades before sending a nod to him. He reaches out from his pockets and pulls out a flashbang. He sends a quick look and then throws the grenade, creating a massive flash of light, blinding the Blackwatch trooper momentarily before the BSAA opens fire at them, killing them.
"That was close." The leader sighs before shifting his gaze to the professor. "House the package?"
The professor looked at the box with shaking hands as she saw it was intact. She released a sigh as she gave a rugged sigh.
"I-i-it's fine." The professor said getting nods from the leaders.
"Alright, let's go."
And with that, the unit and the scientist quickly went to the helipad on the roof. Once arrived, the professor then placed the container down securely as the helicopter flew off. She visibly sighs and relaxes as she goes to sit down. Not noticing that the biomass started to act differently as the tentacles hit the box or more specifically the area where the bullets manage to hit the container.
The whole ride in the helicopter was quiet. After they managed to escape the facility, no one had spoken a word through the whole ride as they thought deeply on what happened. Now they're heading to another base that would lead them to a plane in Idaho, which would lead them to a more secure base that is located in Nassau.
They knew that this was a bit over the top, but they have strict orders to secure the Mercer Virus as humanly possible. Now knowing that Blackwatch somehow finds out about the last piece of it and is after it only makes things much worse than they already are, so they don't want to take any chances.
As the copter lands, one of the soldiers grabs the Mercer Virus before looking at the professor.
"We'll take it from here." The soldier said, making the professor nod as they went on the plane and placing the glass container into another box before commanding the pilot to send them to the base.
A few hours have run by as the entire flight to Nasau was quiet, well, save for some initial small talk amongst the crew but otherwise it's pretty quiet.
As one of the soldiers went through the hallway, one of the scientists on board grabbed the container where the Mercer Virus are being held and took it towards the built-in laboratory. The scientist, Dr. Eli Marvo, placed the container in with his partner, dr. Joanna Grimes.
"So this is containment holding the Mercer Virus?" Grimes asked, getting a nod from Marvo.
"Yes. We are going to examine it to see if there's any new mutations that happened during its last experimentation. Once it was done, we would place it into a cryogenic stage, in order for us to move it into a more secure area for the rest of the flight."
Grimes nodded at that before she grabbed the box and opened it. She was about to take out the tempered glass container, only for her to stop and went wide eyed with fear.
The Mercer Virus is gone….
Grimes let out a short scream, startling Marvo as he went in and asked what was wrong until he caught a glimpse of the box. As his vision went on, his blood went cold as he saw the box's edge was cracked open leaving a small hole for the Mercer Virus to escape.
So without thinking he opened the glass containers and held it above his head, hoping that the virus was still inside and not somewhere in the plane or else it would be catastrophic.
"Oh my god, Eli, the Mercer virus is not there!" Grimes said with panic
'Relax, I'm sure it was-" But he didn't get to finish as the remaining piece of the red-orange and black biomas then fell out from the shadows of the container and into the professor's Marvo to panic and try to get rid of it. But the biomas didn't let up as it went into Eli's mouth as the professor himself was struggling on to it.
"Oh god… oh god…" Grimes backed away from Eli as she watched in horror as the professor let out a scream of agony, alerting the soldiers nearby as black and red-orange tendrils formed around the body and started to reshape the professor's body.
"HELP ME!" Eli shouted as he tried to reach out to Grimes, who just backs away in fright as biomass consumes him. "HELP ME P-P-LEASE….!"
Not soon after, a soldier went and saw frightened Grimes and went wide eyed as he saw the Mercer-infected Eli.
"Shit!" the soldier Cursed. "All units request back up in the lab, Stat! The Mercer virus has somehow got out! Get your asses here, NOW!"
The soldier raised his rifle at the scientist as he grimace and watched in disgust and shock as the professor's whole body being consumed by the virus as he saw all of his flesh and bones started to rearrange as black and red tendrils consumes his entire being, while his screams of pain and agony echoed in and out of the room.
The soldier didn't waste any time as he started to shoot, hoping that he can do damage before it can fully transform.
On the side, Grimes stares in horror as the biomass consumes the rest of her lab partner's body. His screams of pain as he was being consumed by the biomass and was forcibly being organically rearranged. While the bullets from the soldier pierce into it, adding more suffering on the pain that he's already feeling.
Slowly and painfully, the professor's biomass-consumed body fell down to his knees as the Soldier's magazine was empty. He then looks at the body before quickly reloading his gun. But before he could utter a word, the arm shut up, shocking the soldier and making Grimes scream in panic.
"Fire!" The sound of a soldier and multiple firearms rang through the room and soon a swerve of bullets and gunshots filled the room as well as the biomass-infected body and the soldier he was holding.
As the soldiers kept firing, the body started to get up, before quickly consuming the hold-up soldier, the rest looked in shock as they were a second too late. Soon the body of Eli was no more as did the soldier he was holding.
Now, all that remains is the physical form of Alex Mercer. The Blacklight light virus.
But something was off. Alex's skin was paler than usual. His breathing became jagged as if he was tired out. Which is impossible. His clothing almost didn't resemble clothing because the biomass tendrils are sticking out as an orange-red pattern glows on them. He also didn't have his hood on which revealed a short bed of a beige color.
But the real kicker was his face. It wasn't fully… well a face. Half of it was diformed. Half of it they could see small patches of skin, flesh and bone from the jaw were visible as several black tendrils were next to it. His left eye didn't have any pupils, giving him a one blind-look, as his teeth were sharp and un-human-like. The other side was relatively ok, but they could see some red wart on it, infecting a good third of his other half, his right eye was glowing orange-red as he stared at them with unwavering expressions.
Soon Mercer quickly went in for the charge, causing the soldiers to immediately shoot him, but with no effect. Alex quickly punches through one of them, launching the soldier to the group before quickly grabbing Grimes, who lets out a horrid scream, before the biomass consumes her.
"Open fire!" One of the soldiers said as he unloads his bullets toward Alex. Mercer just stands there and takes it. Without sending a word, Alex then charged at the small group. Bulldozing his way through ass he simoustanly grabbing a soldier, and chucking him across the hall, seeing him splat blood out and making a large dent to the wall. Alex then shifted his biomass to his legs before delivering a kick to the soldier. His foot went through as he consumed his body.
Alex felt that he still wasn't powerful enough to get his weapons back. As the years of experiments, testing and no food had made him weak to the point where he was back in square one. And a few soldiers and a scientist won't cut it.
"Lunar to available back up, Mercer is l-" Lunar said, but was quickly cut off as Alex shoved his hand through his chest. Alex then looked and saw more soldiers came but he just released a small smirk and charged in. He quickly dismantled the squad as he felt his strength increase in each consumption.
He was about to do more, but was cut off by a large explosion that was shot directly at him. He looked at his arm and saw that it was nearly blown off from the bone and saw his biomass repairing the wound. He then cast a glare at his attacker, who is holding a grenade launcher, and quickly charged at him. The soldier starts backing away as he rapidly launches grenades after grenades, managing to get a few good hits as Alex staggers back by the impact. It didn't take long for Alex to grab him by the throat, giving a snarl.
"Vermin." He said before slamming into the metal flooring. Killing him.
"This is Ares to HQ. Mercer had just escaped containment and is murdering everyone in the plane! " Ares said as he transmitted the message via a private international communication link. He was about to say more but quickly heard a noise of gunfire and men screaming before he cursed.
At this rate, they would all be dead by the manner of minutes and HQ can send any back-up. By the time they do that, Mercer is already gone.
Ares quickly ransacks his brain on reading the reports of the Mercer virus back when the BSAA was new and that they have captured it. He remembered Mercer's weaknesses, which are electricity, water, and cold. None of which they have one hand. But he is still weakened. Even though he consumed almost everyone in the plane, Alex is far from being back to his original strength.
So with that in mind, Ares went to one of the containers in the communication room, before pulling out a bomb and a trigger.
He heard that this was a working prototype that is capable of blowing anything in a thirty-mile radius. He can only hope that it would be enough.
As he hid the bomb somewhere. Be was immediately knocked over, dropping the detonator, as he looked as saw Alex in front of him.
His eyes went wide as he quickly shifted his glance to the detonator and scrambled to it. Alex just smirks before grabbing him and effortlessly tossing him away. The soldier shouts in pain as he feels several of his ribs broken, before being hoisted up.
He felt all the air in his lungs rapidly running out. The noise of his struggle on Alex's death grip rang through the room, as he felt his consciousness rapidly fading as he struggled to break free.
Alex let out a sinister smirk as he saw Ares struggling for freedom as he ust applied more pressure to his grip. He was about to finish the job but felt an explosion hit him, making him turn around in fury and saw one of the soldiers holding a grenade launcher.
Probably having the same idea as the last guys who did it. But this time, he wasn't so weak.
And without warning Alex shifted into his bladed-whip arm before shooting the tip into the man's torso. Killing him.
Satisfied. Alex shifts his attention back to Ares but stops as Ares looks at him with the detonator at him.
"See you in hell…" he said before pulling the trigger.
Outside of the plane, a large explosion had consumed the whole plane. Covering it with a giant ball of fire as the entire aircraft were nothing more than scrap pieces of metal. Disintegrating everything is near the explosion.
Especially Alex Mercer.
Well…. Almost.
Down next to the swamps of Liousanna, a small remnant of what is left of Alex Mercer after his short revival lay there in the wet mos of the bayou.
Its little form laid there, helpless and unmovable as the explosion had nearly rendered it incapable of moving to get any food.
It was one of the perks of Umbrella and the BSAA's experiments. Managing to give him the ability to move within biomass form, which he had never been able to do back then.
The piece of biomass stayed there , waiting for any unsuspecting victim, whether it be animal or human it didn't care, for it to be consumed.
Suddenly I felt a foot had stepped upon me, followed by what appeared to be an unconscious (or dead) body. Not wasting its time, the biomass quickly latches into the man's face and quickly goes into his insides.
It may not be a lot but it would do.
As the biomass started spreading, it felt that something was wrong. Very wrong.
The biomass tried to spread into the body, tring to consume the fibres and flesh of it's victim. But somehow it wasn't happening. The biomass felt that something was wrong. It can feel itself absorbing the body, but not the way that it did before.
Soon, the biomass felt that it was getting weaker. As if it was being absorbed by the body itself.
It tried to do something, but it couldn't. No matter what it did to stop whatever was happening, it couldn't.
Pretty soon, the biomass heard a faint voice that sounded like a little girl?
"You...won't get away….your mine now…." The voice giggled mockingly at it, instantly grating on the nerves of the biomass. It struggles to fight but the girl's voice just becomes louder and louder. Enjoying its attempt to break free and take control as she just laughs at him. Eventually the biomass had enough and used all its remaining strength and took over.
"W-what are you doing? Stop that!" The girl's voice was now laced with a slight panic and fear as soon she felt that the Blacklight virus was fighting back.
"You can't, I won't let you!" the voice shouted as she fought to take control.
"Try me." Alex's voice came in as he stared at the blank space that was covered by snow and dark skies. Before he gave a roar and used his strength.
A/N: And that is it for the prologue guys. I hope you guys like it and I got to say that this was a challenge to write. Not only for the fact that I don't know much about the Resident Evil franchise and only able to watch Biohazard, Village, and 2; The Remake. But mixing the elements from Prototype 1 and 2 is somewhere in the RE timeline.
Though I did some research here and there about a few things like the BSAA, Chris, Ethan and so on. Plus I also added some of my own little flair on how the BSAA and Blackwatch/Gentek would interact and how the BSAA would deal with the Mercer virus.
So anyways if you guys like it then be afraid to give it a comment on what you guys think and also again, criticism is allowed as long as they are honest, straight to the point, and not offensive in any way possible.
So without further ado, I see you guys in the next chapter.
