MDM's Version of How to Train Your Dragon
A/N: Hello again, Dragon Rider fans! I'm back with Chapter 7 with my version of HTTYD. I've been loving the reviews you fellow Rider fans have been leaving me.
To that Guest reviewer, I will definitely consider your idea. I really like it. Also, to MMM, you'll have to see what happens between the girls. Right now, it's not pretty.
On with the show! Roll it!
Chapter 7
The Claws Are Down
A couple hours later, Hiccup, Ragnar, and Juno were back in the forest, in the same area where Hiccup had freed the Night Fury the day before. The three of them knew that they were thinking the same thing earlier. If dragons always go for the kill, why did the most feared of all dragons spare Hiccup the day before? He was an easy kill at the moment, so why?
"So why didn't you?" Hiccup quietly asked to himself as he picked up a piece of the torn bola.
Ragnar took the piece of bola from Hiccup and briefly examined it. He then tossed it away.
"So you said it was flying kind of weird after it let you go." He said as all three of them all started walking again.
"Yeah." Hiccup answered. "It kept crashing into things."
"How scary can a dragon be if it can't fly right?" Juno asked. The boys just shrugged, not giving a definite answer.
The Misfit Trio continued along the path from where Hiccup released the Night Fury, looking for any other possible clues. Soon, they saw light peeking out from between two huge boulders. They each squeezed through and saw the most peaceful scene they had ever seen.
It was a small, beautiful cove. It looked so peaceful and quiet, like nothing had disturbed it for centuries. "How can such a place like this even exist?" Juno asked quietly.
The boys didn't answer her. They were too amazed by the sight. But then after a few seconds, Hiccup sighed.
"Who am I kidding?" He said, breaking the silence. "This was stupid."
"Hey, you planning on giving up?" Ragnar asked him suspiciously, ready to give his foster brother another brotherly lecture. But then he spotted something shiny and black on the ground. The Misfit Trio all stooped down as Ragnar picked it up.
"Dragon scales." He said.
"To be honest," Juno admitted, "I thought only stars can make black look beautiful."
"I'll say this," Ragnar said," I've never seen scales like this before."
"That was one of the thoughts racing through my mind when I first saw it." Hiccup added.
Suddenly, a huge black figure zoomed past the Misfit Trio, making them jump back. The Night Fury was trying to climb up the cove wall, but it kept slipping on the rocks, until it was forced to glide back down in a skidding landing. The Misfit Trio slid down to a nearby stone ledge to get a better view.
They continued watching the Night Fury attempt to escape the cove, but up to no avail. Hiccup took out his journal and began to draw the dragon with immaculate detail.
"Why don't you just... fly away?" He whispered.
"Maybe it can't because of that?" Ragnar said, pointing at the dragon's tail. Hiccup and Juno followed the direction of where he was pointing and their breaths hitched in their throats.
It had only one tailfin.
The left tailfin was clean off.
Juno flinched. "Please tell me that didn't happen when you shot it down." Her statement was emphasized when the Night Fury shot at the ground in frustration.
Hiccup looked down at his sketch and erased the left tailfin with his hand to distract him from his guilt. The Misfit Trio all watched the Night Fury fail again to fly. They then saw it try to catch fish in the pond, but failed that as well.
"I guess it's hungry." Juno observed.
"I would be if I was a big guy like him." Ragnar commented.
Hiccup and Juno gave him questioning looks. "How do you know that the Night Fury is a male?" Hiccup asked him.
Ragnar just shrugged, as if it was obvious. "When it comes to build, females are more slim in muscle. Behavior-wise, they tend to be more vicious; which is necessary if they're protecting hatchlings. Unless you want to get a closer look at him just to see."
The Iverson boy seemed to know a little bit of almost everything. Especially when it came to healing and medicine. He had the knowledge and capability to become a healer, but that dream is unlikely to happen because of his reputation as a misfit.
Hiccup responded to his foster brother's previous statement with a slap on the shoulder. But his sudden action caused his charcoal pencil to slide down into the cove, clattering all the way.
The Misfit Trio all held their breaths as the Night Fury perked up at the noise of the pencil clattering to the ground. The dragon just stared up at the young Vikings, not making a move, but breathing steadily. The Misfit Trio all slightly tilted their heads to the side with curiosity, and the dragon showed them his intelligence by copying the same passive action. After a minute of tense silence, the Trio slowly and quietly backed out of the cove, the dragon's acid-green eyes never leaving them.
It was a quiet and slow walk as the Misfit Trio began their way back to the village. Gobber's words from earlier from training came back to them.
"'A dragon will always, always, go for the kill.'"
If dragons always go for the kill, why didn't the Night Fury kill them when he saw them? And he did the same for Hiccup when he first found him. Were they wrong? Their thoughts were interrupted by raindrops on their heads. They then raced to find shelter and get out of the incoming rain.
A/N: That's definitely a lot to think about, huh? I'll try to upload the next chapter as soon as I can. It just depends on how things go. Life can be unpredictable. You'll see more tension between Astrid and Juno, but nothing too violent to raise the rating too much. And, you'll see what's going on with Stoick and the other Vikings on the hunt.
Until next time, fellow Dragon Riders!
Got to fly! ;)
