Penelope waved goodbye to Derek as he grabbed his bag from beneath his desk before he followed the others out into the hall. Once more, the familiar melancholy of being without him settled over her having to be alone for however long the case took to solve. She knew that she shouldn't be like that, but since they had started seeing each other, she had always felt bereft at his absence. Letting out a little sigh, she turned away from the bullpen and made her way into her office.
She sank down into her chair and sighed once more, resting her chin on her hands as she stared unseeing at the monitors. "This is stupid, Garcia. You need to get your head in the game, especially since this case isn't as serious as others you've seen recently. You're allowing the grief over not being pregnant to cloud everything," she whispered savagely as she took a deep breath.
Looking down at her desk, she saw that there was a new file folder setting there, and she frowned a little as she leaned back and stared at it. She knew that all three of her teams were now out in the field, so it wasn't necessarily more work. As she picked it up, she noticed there was a sticky note attached to the front, and she plucked it off the folder to read what was written.
I still think you're too stressed about the past, so I used your briefing time to look up a few more ways that might help relax you enough to get pregnant. Try to relax and think about using a few of these suggestions with your friends. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask! Grant
Penelope smiled at his thoughtfulness, and she pressed the sticky note back to the front of the folder before opening it to see what information he'd gathered for her. There was a lot of the same information that she'd come across in her own research, along with a few new things that she might try, and she smiled as she picked up a pen and starred a few of the tasks that she could feasibly do with the other women.
Still smiling, she slipped her personal phone out of her pocket and called up Jessica's information. She pressed her phone number and then brought the device to her ear, listening to it ring. Finally, though, the call connected, and then she heard Jessica's voice. "Hello? Penelope?"
"Hey! I was wondering if you wanted to get lunch with me today? I really want to get to know you a little better, to help you integrate in the group more, and this is the perfect way to do that. Unless you have plans already?"
"No, I'm free for lunch today. What time did you want to meet?"
She looked over at her calendar and then spoke again. "12:30 at Pietro's sound good?"
"Perfect, I'll meet you there."
"Sounds good!" Penelope ended the call with Jessica before putting the event in her calendar and then she set about getting her work in order, starting the few searches that Hotch had messaged to her. Now that she was focused on her work, time seemed to fly by, and the next thing she knew, her alarm was going off, telling her that she needed to head out if she wanted to meet Jessica on time. After sending her out to lunch texts to her teams, she let Kevin know that she was heading out, so that he could look after her searches just in case a break in the case happened while she was eating.
After that was taken care of, she grabbed her purse and shoved her phone into one of the pockets before leaving her office. Anderson was still at his desk when she reached the bottom stair, and she stopped by his side, resting her hand on his shoulder. "Heading out for lunch today?" he asked.
"Yeah, I'm going to try and get to know Jessica a little better. I just wanted to thank you for taking time to think of me and my dilemma. I know that you think this is going to come back and bite me in the ass, but I have a really good feeling about what's going to happen. As long as one of my friends ends up preggers, I know that I can more easily relax and achieve my goal."
"And what are you going to do if all five of you end up pregnant at the same time? You said JJ thought Hotch would have a fit if she alone ended up in the family way. But add in you and Blake, plus Strauss and this mystery woman that you've added to yoga night, well, things have the possibility to go off the rails very quickly."
"There is no way on earth that all five of us will get pregnant at the same time. There are only two of us who could easily get pregnant, and that wouldn't be so bad, would it?"
Anderson gave her a look, and she shrugged as she adjusted her purse strap. "You keep telling yourself that, Penelope. But when I end up hearing Agent Hotchner yell about there being something in the water, I know that I'll need to drive the getaway car."
Penelope rolled her eyes as she patted his shoulder once more. "I will keep that in mind, should the impossible happen. Have a good lunch, when you get to it," she said before she turned and made her way out of the bullpen. There were too many people waiting for the elevators, so she chose to take the stairs, hurrying down them as quickly as she could, reaching the garage almost faster than if she had taken the elevator.
The drive to the restaurant didn't take as long as she expected, which was good, since it took a while to find a parking spot. After finally grabbing on, she made her way into the restaurant and gave a small wave to Jessica as she went over to the woman. "You made it! I'm glad I left a little early, because parking was a nightmare!"
"Same! Have you decided yet?" she asked as she took a seat across from her.
"Just about. Though I told our server to give us five minutes after you arrived before she came back over to take our order, so that you'd have time to decide, too."
Penelope nodded as she picked up her menu, quickly perusing it and finding something that sounded delicious, although it took her a little longer to decide on a drink. By the time the server appeared, she had made up her mind. They placed their order, and then she stared at Jessica, trying to think of something to say. "So, did you really enjoy class? You weren't just humouring me?" she finally blurted out.
"No, I wasn't humouring you, Penelope. It was genuinely nice to get out of the house and be with women around my own age and having the only thing I worry about being if I can make the position correctly. And then hanging out with you all after the class was the best. I don't think I've had that much fun in ages." Jessica grinned at her as she reached across the table to clasp Penelope's hand, squeezing it firmly. "I am so glad that Aaron encouraged you to reach out to me. I didn't realise how much I needed this until I was doing it."
"That is so good to hear, Jess. Which means you might agree to my next question a little more readily. In my quest to relax more, I found information that suggested if I got out with my friends more often, it would help with that, since I'd be focused on others, not my circumstances. And I know that you need an outlet, too. So, would you mind spending more time with me, when we can get away?"
Jessica nodded as she pulled her hand back and picked up her water, taking a sip. "I would love nothing more than that, Penelope. And maybe you could help me source a good, honest, care company to help with my dad? I'm starting to feel burnt out, and I don't want to take that out on him."
"Of course, Jess, anything that you need, I will help out with." Penelope whipped out her phone and made a note to herself about searching for that information when she got back to work before turning her focus back onto her friend and being in the moment with her.
