Megan paced the lobby of the new children's hospital at Grey Sloan.
"Megan breath," Teddy said.
"It has to be perfect," Megan said, "my legacy to this place. You made us the top training centre for women in the country. You built our reputation for education, innovation and excellence."
"Richard Webber was educating and training the whole person and Bailey started the push for women," Teddy said, "I just encouraged others to follow their passions and innovate."
"But your the one known for assembling full female teams in all areas," Megan said, "pushing for universal health care, expanding the free clinic and weekly free surgery days."
"Free surgery days was Grey's idea," Teddy said, "I found donors to support it. People who believe like I do."
"Everyone is coming today," Megan said, "Catherine Fox is even coming."
"It's a big deal," Teddy said.
"And my ceremonial first patient," Megan asked.
"Hates MRIs," Teddy said, "but has been bribed with getting to go with me and Owen to pick out a new toy and an entire costco box of popsicles all to herself."
"In one sitting how did you get Allie on board for that," Megan asked.
"Not in one sitting just with her name on it in the freezer," Teddy said, "compromising with my daughter."
"All yours are adults," Megan said.
"They all are," Teddy said, "Leo and Charlotte are here today, there's so many old residents coming. Yang and Grey's class, Annie's whole class. To dedicate the teaching facility and the hospital."
"It's amazing how many want to be here to dedicate the teaching facility to Richard," Megan agreed.
"He was the best teacher I've seen," Teddy said, "Bailey is great but Richard was in a league of his own. He trained the whole person, saw them for who they are. I didn't see it until I watched him teach as a parent, saw how well he knew my daughter, how much he cared."
"You're going to open the lab," Megan said.
"With Grey and Avery," Teddy replied, "they should do it. He was closest to them."
They went through the formal ceremonies and ribbon cutting.
"It's time to welcome out first patient," Megan announced, "today we have two year old Everly joining us as our first patient. Are you ready sweetheart?"
"Anna Gan," Everly yelled.
"Let's go see Auntie Megan," Allison said, "are we carrying you or are you walking?"
"I do it," Everly said.
"Okay," Asher said setting her walker on the ground.
Allison made sure Everly was stable, "lets go princess. Grandma, Auntie Megan and Auntie Annie are waiting for us."
"Go," Everly cheered moving forward, "Gama! Gama!"
"Come on you," Teddy smiled.
Everly smiled as she walked to meet Teddy and Megan at the front door, the media would film her walk to the elevator. Allison and Asher walked a couple steps behind Everly. She kept looking over her shoulder to make sure her parents were still there.
"You've got it," Allison assured, "go on. Grandma and Auntie Megan are waiting. Can you go see Grandma?"
"Popsicle," Everly asked.
"After your pictures," Allison promised.
"Popsicle," Everly said again.
"When your pictures are taken," Asher assured.
Just before they boarded the elevator a reporter stopped Allison and Asher.
"How does it feel to have your daughter chosen as the first patient," the reporter asked.
"I've grown up here, this hospital, the surgical team is our extended family," Allison said, "it feels good to know that Everly will continue to get the very best care possible. To be part of a hospital that is on the cutting edge with state of the art facilities. We've been part of the hospitals program for children with CP since she was diagnosed at 5 months old."
"And the care Everly has had here," the reporter asked.
"Incredible," Asher said, "they are really good with her. They've connected us resources through the Fox Foundation and the adaptive equipment library. Doctor Lincon, Doctor Silverstone, Dr McKidd and Dr Schmidt have made a huge impact for Everly in her quality of life and her abilities. We are very thankful to have them in her life and ours."
"When she's here for surgery the whole staff really supports our family," Allison said, "we are very thankful for all of the doctors, nurses and therapists here. Her Physiotherapist Amanda has made it possible for her to walk as confidently as she does. We are very lucky to have everyone here helping Everly."
"Do you have any plans to give back to the hospital," the reporter asked.
"We do," Asher said.
"I'm currently Pre Med at UW and intend to become a paediatric surgeon either neuro or orthopaedic to help children like Everly," Allison said, "we participate is family groups talking with families who are at all different points of their journey. Asher was on the crew that wired parts of the building. We will pay it forward anyway we can."
They finished the interview and took Everly for her CT
"No mommy," Everly whined when they lifted her onto the table.
"Yes," Allison said, "we have to do this."
"Whole body," the tech said.
"Mommy and daddy will be right here when your done," Asher promised.
"No," Every whined, "No."
"Yes," Allison said, she turned to the tech, "it's okay if you have to use the restraints. She's had them before. She will cry and fuss but it has to happen."
They started to strap Everly down so she couldn't move.
"No," Everly sobbed.
"It's okay," Allison said, "you'll be okay you've had body pictures before. Mommy will be in the room."
"No," the tech said.
"Bring me an apron," Allison demanded.
"Miss," the tech said.
"I can be present with my daughter," Allison snapped, "ask dr Megan hunt."
"What," the tech asked.
"The chief is my aunt," Allison said.
"If you stay you'll need to wear a protective apron," the tech said.
"We both will," Allison said.
"Mommy no," Everly whiled.
Allison crouched beside her daughter, "I'm going to go get my special apron on and daddy will hold your hand."
"No mommy," Everly sobbed.
"30 seconds princess," Allison assured.
Once Allison had her apron on they finished securing Everly in place on the table.
"Ms Blouin," the tech said, "we have the over head screens with nature scenes for the kids to look at. Would Everly prefer farm animals or the ocean."
"Do you have birds," Allison asked.
"We do," the tech said, "and space."
"Birds," Allison said, "she loves birds and bird watching."
"We'll turn the birds on," the tech agreed.
"Everly you're going to look at the ceiling and see how many birdies you can spot," Allison said, "can you count them for me?"
"Birdies," Everly asked.
"They're going to show you a birdie video," Allison promised, "you get to watch the birdies."
"Okay," Everly pouted, birdies weren't so bad.
They did the scan as quickly as possible and Allison began to undo the restraints from around Everly and lifted her up.
"You did so good princess," Allison praised.
"You were so brave," Asher smiled, "should see dr Link, say good bye then go home for popsicles?"
"Popsicle," Everly perked up.
"When we get home," Asher promised.
They went to meet Link in his office.
"How was our first paitent," Link asked.
"Her usually refusal of the CT but the images are done," Allison said.
"I have them," Link said, "I think we can proceeded with her planned surgery in two weeks. Do you have any questions for me?"
"How long after until we can have her up and moving," Asher asked.
"A couple weeks of her not moving much which will be hard," Link said, "then slow with the gait trainer for 4-6 weeks. We will slowly build her up and hopefully she won't need the walker after. There will always be gait challenges but with this we can get her on crutches or hopefully independent."
"The scaring," Allison asked.
"I will go in right at the hip joint," Link said, "the scar will be hidden in that crease. You'll see it changing her diaper but no one else will ever know."
"Would the scar be minimized if plastics closed," Allison asked.
"I do use dr Avery's technique," Link said, "where the scar is hidden there is no need."
"Her pain levels after," Asher asked.
"Initially she will have some discomfort," Link said, "then long term it should be reduced."
"Management when we get home," Allison asked.
"What you've been doing," Link said, "heat, massage, OTC pain meds. We'll play giving her prescription by ear. I try not to give narcotics when she's so young."
"How long will she be here after," Allison asked.
"3-4 days," Link said, "there are parent beds that fold out of the couches in the new rooms, you'll have an actual bed. I know you two don't leave when she's hospitalized."
"Can some one familiar scrub in," Allison asked, "take her right into the OR?"
"She can have someone until she is under then in post op," Link agreed.
"It will be my dad or Annie," Allison said.
"Not your mom," Link asked.
"I need mom with me and dad with Ev," Allison said.
"Two weeks then," Link said, "in the OR here. We'll use one of the peds ones that has tables and equipment sized for her."
"And we can stay with her the whole time she's in the hospital," Asher asked.
"You can," Link assured, "do you have any more questions?"
"No," Allison said, "Ash?"
"No," Asher agreed, "thank you."
"I'll see you in two weeks," Link said.
"Two weeks," Allison gulped.
They left the office and went in search of Allison's family.
"Heading home," TEddy asked when they found her.
"Ya," Asher said, "lunch and nap. She's getting tired."
"Ready for her surgery," Teddy asked.
"We hope so," Allison said, "dad is going to pre and post op with her and you're with us?"
"I can be," Teddy agreed.
"I need you mom," Allison said.
"I will be there," Teddy promised, "text me the date and I'll have my schedule cleared."
"Thank you," Allison smiled.
"Ev can you come see me," Owen asked the toddler.
Everly made her way to Owen, "gapa up!"
Owen lifted her up," I heard you were brave today."
"Brave," Everly echoed.
"She was," Allison said, "the birds on the ceiling really helped."
"I wondered about those," Megan said.
"We told her to count the birds," Allison said, "it distracted her,"
"Good," Megan said, "will you be there on Sunday?"
"We will," Allison said.
"We might be late," Asher said, "we have to do church and lunch with my family."
"Let us know," Megan said.
"We will," Allison agreed, "we do need to go put Ev down for a nap."
"We'll see you at home," Teddy replied.
"I work 4-10," Allison said.
"I'll see you tomorrow then," Teddy said, "food?"
"I'll eat before," Allison said.
"Ev and I are having grilled cheese and veggies," Asher said.
"Come up if you want to," Teddy said.
"I have chilli in the slow cooker," Owen said.
"We might," Asher agreed, "if there's enough."
"There is," Owen promised.
"We'll see you later then," Asher agreed.
They said their good byes and took Everly home for lunch and her nap.
