A cold wind passed over the mountaintops, softly carrying the many upon many of snowflakes on the rocks. The terrain was left bare of life, where nopony even bothered to tread. That was, save for the lone being walking through the snow.
Snowflakes fell on the silver armor the being wore over his white metal body. As his two legs trudged through the snow, his arms hung at his side with a shield on his left. A white mask adorned his face with a blue eye on the left and a telescopic lens on the right.
The snow crushed beneath the being's metal feet as he stopped his trek, the growing snow blinding his sight. The problem was solved when he waved a hand and the snowflakes pushed away, as if on his whim. The path cleared, the being saw it came to end at a small cliff and his right lens stared at it.
Right on the edge of the cliff was a gray gravestone. Patches of snow covered most of the grave, but it was not too hard to notice its details. It was old with small cracks all over and it was worn down by the elements over the centuries.
The being approached the grave and kneeled before it. He raised a hand and metal fingers lightly brushed off the snow from the grave. The snow falling off, revealing words etched on it.
"Here lies Snowdrop,
Innovator of Equestria's Snowfalls
A great pony and a great friend."
Emotions welled inside of the being's armored chest. The name brought memories of sadness and joy, and there were so many of them. The being closed his single blue eye, sorting through the memories…
It was the first snowfall of the year. A cold wind rustled the trees and would have nip at mere ponies. For the being striding through the Everfree, it merely bounced off the metal armor like it was nothing. Not surprising since the cold was his element.
He continued his stroll until he found a light blue pony on the bridle path. She seemed to be waiting in the cold with only her cloak to keep her warm. Normally, he would avoid meeting with any ponies, but this was not just any pony.
The pony moved around the bridle path, careful not to stray off of it. "Now, where is he?" she said to herself. "He was supposed to meet me here over and… oof!" The pony bumped into a metal leg and plopped onto the snow.
A small smile tugged at metal lips. He watched the pony sat up and try to get rid of the snow in her white mane. "Hello there, Snowdrop," he greeted warmly.
Snowdrop froze a bit. She didn't raise her head but she didn't need to. "Kopaka, is it you?" she asked.
"Yes, it is," the Toa Nuva of Ice spoke in his voice a chilly monotone.
Kopaka found Snowdrop's milky white eyes gazing out, trying to find him. "You're late," she said, trying to be discouraging but with a small smile.
"I'm here, aren't I?" said Kopaka. "Now, let's get you cleaned up."
Snowdrop softly hummed to herself as she gathered a ball of snow in her hooves. Kopaka waited under a nearby tree, watching the young pony enjoy her fun. Well, his telescopic lens was. His only eye had been closed as he reminisced the past.
Years ago, he found Snowdrop wondering around the Everfree Forest. No doubt, she heard rumors regarding a Toa lurking about and protecting ponies. Then, Snowdrop asked, "Are you the Toa of Ice?"
Kopaka remembered the look on her face. It was so full of curiosity and wonder at finally finding this fabled being. After a while, he finally said, "Yes…"
Kopaka raised his shield over his head, blocking a snowball. "Nice try," he said, glancing up to Snowdrop.
The filly's wings fluttered as she landed beside him. "I'll get you some time!" she stuck out her tongue.
Kopaka hid a smile. Since he first met her, Kopaka had seen Snowdrop grow over the winters they spent together. She was still a filly but in another year or two, she would be a mare. How things changed over time…
Snowdrop sat beside her friend. "Kopaka, what was your old home like?"
The questioned took Kopaka by surprise. Snowdrop never asked about that before. "I've had many homes," Kopaka finally answered.
Ever inquisitive, she continued, "Well, what was your first one like?"
Kopaka stared off as he tried to remember. It had been so, so long since he thought about his old home. "My first home was an island paradise," he started off. "The beaches were golden in the morning, and at night, the moon lit the great waters. The volcanoes glowed with hot lava and the jungles were great, home to many creatures. The rocky deserts were harsh but vast like the great mountain caves that stretched on and on. And the ice…" he paused for a moment, "… the ice was cold and stern, yet shone bright white in the morning light."
Snowdrop laid her head on Kopaka's leg and closed her eyes. "I wish I could see it," she said, trying to imagine Kopaka's home.
A small pang struck inside Kopaka. "Yes, so do I."
A moment later, Snowdrop stood up. "I should go. Ponies might be wondering why I've been gone for so long."
"Before you do, there's something I want to give you," Kopaka said and Snowdrop stood there, wondering what her friend had in mind.
Kopaka held his hands open and concentrated. Particles of ice slowly gathered above his hand, coalescing into a blob. The blob's mass constantly shifted until it formed the shape of a familiar snowflake. The snowflake glowed as it solidified and rested in Kopaka's metal palms.
"Here," Kopaka said, holding out the sculpture.
Snowdrop took the flake in her hooves. Her eyes widen as she felt the intricate pattern, the fine edges of the sculpture she held. "It's… it's beautiful." Snowdrop looked at Kopaka. "I don't know what to say."
"You don't need to say anything." Snowdrop smiled, placing her new gift under her cloak. "Do you know the way back?"
"Of course, I do! I might be blind, but I know my way around," Snowdrop said before taking off.
Again, Kopaka felt himself smiling as he stood and watch Snowdrop walk onto the bridled path. The filly became smaller and smaller, but he could still see Snowdrop with his telescopic lens. In the distance, Snowdrop waved a hoof as she called for him.
"Kopaka? Kopaka?!"
"Kopaka? Kopaka?"
Kopaka's lens and single eye snapped open to Snowdrop's grave. The voice calling to him was soft and gentle, but it was not Snowdrop's.
The white Toa turned to see a slender, feminine figure some feet away from him. She was a Toa, much like Kopaka himself, with silver armor over her blue body. A pair of orange eyes peered through her mask at the Toa of Ice.
"Gali, I didn't expect you to be here," Kopaka greeted her in his usual monotone. Really, he felt a little annoyed to be found, now of all times.
Gali's mouth moved behind the grates on her mask. "There's been another attack. Near Appleloosa."
Kopaka stood with alarm. "Has Tahu called for a meeting?"
"He has," she nodded. "Pohatu has already been informed and is looking for Onua. Tahu himself has gone to find Lewa."
"We should go then."
Kopaka headed off and passed Gali without looking back. Gali, however, remained where she stood. Her eyes were focused on the grave with a hint of curiosity and sadness. "Was she a friend?" Gali called out.
Kopaka's feet came to a halt in the snow. He was silent for many moments. "She was," he finally answered, loud enough for Gali to hear.
Gali said no more and took her own leave. She passed Kopoka and left him alone in his moment of solitude, not wanting to intrude any further than she already did.
Once Gali had been out of earshot, Kopaka turned to Snowdrop's grave. "Goodbye," he spoke before turning back around.
As Toa Kopaka left with Toa Gali, the grave found itself lonely once again. All save for a little ice sculpture resting in the center of the tombstone.
AN: This was from my days on Fimfiction, when I was in the middle of writing a Bionicle/MLP (given the many similarities of six heroes, representing a physical/ideological element). It had been planned as a long-sprawling "epic" filled with episodic chapters of character moments and action/adventure...and of course, I gave it up because it got too big, and I never really had much of an interest in MLP (I only joined to see the fan content).
This particular idea based on the artwork "Every Teardrop is a Snowflake" from deviantart. Also, Snowdrop's character comes from the MLP fan-film Snowdrop and thus, belongs to its creator, Silly Filly Studios. If you're interested, I suggest to check both out as they are interesting to look at.
Raika out.
