Chapter 23

Kara arrived at the hospital and was unsurprised to see that J'onn had beaten her there. He was speaking to the NCPD detectives who had been called by the hospital. The medical facility had a duty to call the police for any bullet wounds that came through their doors.

"Supergirl, Detectives Forst and Marsh are the ones who alerted us to the situation. They've been unable to gain much information yet but they do have the security footage," he told her.

"Do we know if Todd has injection marks? It's become quite clear how Enigma has been harming her unwilling accomplices," she said.

"We'll have to ask once he's out of surgery. You think that Enigma somehow convinced him to stand still and get shot?" Detective Forst asked. He was a tall thin man who wore dark rimmed glasses and a smart gray suit, which seemingly matched his hair, with purple tie.

"This is far too sloppy for Enigma. When she's done with someone, she makes sure they are dead. What do you have on the security cameras?" Kara wanted to know.

"We have a small white car. There is a woman driving it and a second person, who could not be identified, dumped Todd Smith out of the car. Honestly, they'd have been better off doing all of this in the dark. The broad daylight gave us a shot of the license plate," Detective Marsh explained. She was shorter than her partner and wore a blue pant suit. Her brown hair was pulled back into a tight bun.

"You ran it?" J'onn wondered.

"We already have patrol cars out searching right now and visiting the address where it is registered," Forst explained.

"It wasn't a rental car?" Kara was surprised considering Enigma and her crew's penchant for either renting or stealing vehicles.

"Nope. It hasn't been reported stolen either. The lady who owns it, a Debra Groves, doesn't even have a parking ticket. Honestly, I'm not sure how or why she would have been involved in all of this," Marsh said.

"Maybe our second person didn't give her much of a choice," J'onn frowned.

"That makes me concerned. I'm going to get out there and help the officers find this car and hopefully Miss Groves," Kara told them. She didn't get the chance as her phone rang. Quickly answering it, she heard a familiar voice on the other end. Her eyes went wide and the three standing near her wondered what was going on.

"That was Alex. She's with Gonzales and Schwartz. They have the car in their sights and are following it through traffic. I'm going to meet them," the blonde explained.

"Go! We've got things here. I can help Todd when he's out of surgery," J'onn told her. Without waiting to hear from the detectives, Kara was out of the hospital's front doors in a flash.

"Something is very off about this," Marsh spoke up.

"I agree. It's possible that someone in Enigma's crew has grown a conscious but somehow, I doubt that," J'onn did not want to let on that he hoped it was Kate's sister, Mary.

"The buildings next door don't have any good camera angles that give us the person in the back seat. Until we get the car and its occupants, we're out of luck," Forst frowned.

"Why don't you two get on the case? No point in the three of us waiting, especially since I'm going to have to assist Todd break through Enigma's trap," J'onn suggested. Since Todd was in surgery, it would not have been against protocol for the detectives to keep working and wait for a phone call from the hospital.

"Here is my card. Call us when you know something," Marsh said.

"Will do. Thank you," J'onn gave them a slight smile and the group parted ways. The nurse behind the desk jerked her head to the side and the Martian raised an eyebrow but followed her to a quiet corner.

"What is it?" He asked.

"Mr. Smith did have injection marks in his arm. They looked fresh," she told him.

"Why didn't you tell the detectives?" The Martian was concerned.

"It wasn't until Supergirl said something that I thought it was important. The doctors saw them but they didn't exactly have time to worry about it. If they didn't stop him bleeding…" the woman trailed off.

"Understandable. I need to make a call. You need to tell them that it's possible that Todd has possibly been injected with a combination of Fear Toxin and psychedelic mushroom oil. It is Enigma's drug of choice," J'onn said.

"On it!" The nurse ran for the desk phone and quickly called upstairs. The Martian, meanwhile, dialed Lyla. While he was on the phone with her, the ARGUS team promised to the hospital had been diverted to join the now high-speed chase of Debra Groves' car. Upon seeing Supergirl, the person in the backseat had panicked and was making the woman drive faster. Kara did not want to harm Debra so the game of cat and mouse had begun.
