Number 4 (1/1)
Grace, Linda, and Kendra got out of the car, their laughter rising through the air. "Yeah, no, that last one would give Danno and Uncle Steve a heart attack," Grace said about the ground floor unit between two other apartments in a one story building.
"You think?" Linda shook her head with a little shudder. "The creepy landlord with the pervy vibes on one side and the shady neighbors on the other. My grandma would freak out."
"This one looks promising," Grace said, pointing to a two story house with a fenced yard and garden.
Kendra nodded in agreement. "And it's close enough to your dad and Gabby to walk."
"One point two miles," Grace confirmed with a smile. "And eleven minutes by car to Uncle Steve and Auntie Cath's. I clocked it."
"Of course you did," Linda said with a giggle as they rang the bell. "Let's see what it's like."
The landlord greeted them with a warm smile and led them inside. "Welcome, ladies," she said, "Waiola Nakamura. I'm glad you could make it."
"Thank you for showing us around," Kendra said, her eyes scanning the living room.
"Which one of you is Grace?"
Grace raised a hand and gave a little finger wave. "That's me."
"Then you're ohana." At the younger woman's questioning look, Waiola said, "Kamekona's my cousin on my makuahine's side. Our Tūtūs are sisters." She winked. "I give a Kamaʻāina rent discount."
She wasn't totally surprised, Kame was related to half the island. "That's awesome, it's really great to meet you."
"And you and your friends. I go by Wai, by the way. Let's start with the kitchen," she suggested, leading the way.
Grace followed, her mind picturing making dinner in the sunny kitchen.
Linda's eyes widened at the sight of the modern appliances. "Ohh nice," she whispered.
"Definitely," Kendra agreed.
The bedrooms were decent sized and filled with natural light and the bathroom looked newly renovated.
Grace exchanged a glance with her friends, "It's really nice," she told Wai. "It's okay if after we talk, we can bring a couple of family members to see it before we decide?"
"That's fine. I want the right tenants, it's not just a property I rent out, I live upstairs, it's my home, too." She led them to the door and gave them a wave, thinking the daughter of Danny Williams and niece of Steve McGarrett and her friends would be excellent tenants. "You let me know when and you can stop by with whoever you'd like."
"Thanks" the girls echoed each other. "We'll be back, promise."
The following evening the girls showed up with Danny, Steve, Catherine and Gabby in tow. Grace, Kendra and Linda tried hard to hide their excitement but it was written all over their faces. They'd earmarked over a dozen apartments to look at but had called off the search after just four.
They were certain they'd found the right one.
It was in their price range, centrally located to all of their workplaces, clean and spacious, and perhaps most importantly, it met all the safety requirements their parents, grandparents, and assorted loved ones required.
"This is Waiola Nakamura," Grace said as she introduced her potential new landlord to the group. "She's Kamekona's cousin."
"That probably showed up on my background check." Wai's eyes sparkled with amusement as the girls all looked slightly embarrassed. "Kame warned me Detective Williams and Commander McGarrett would be very thorough." She smiled. "I hope I passed to your satisfaction."
Danny grinned. "With flying colors. Except for the fact that you need to remember that No Parking means no parking."
Wai barked a laugh. "I always pay my fines on time. I like to think of it as my little contribution to the city's budget."
"This is a really nice place," Catherine said as they finished the tour.
"So much nicer than my first apartment," Gabby agreed.
"The locks on the doors and windows look like they're in good working order," Steve said. "Would you have any problem with me adding a few more. Mostly around the back of the house and on the bedroom windows?"
"Not at all," Wai said. "Whatever makes you feel comfortable. As I told the girls, my husband and I live upstairs. So we're close by if they ever need anything."
Danny went back over each of the rooms they'd toured in his head. As if Wai could read his thoughts she said, "There is no door that connects the upstairs and downstairs units so you don't have to worry about us popping up unexpectedly in the girls' space."
"I like that," Danny said. "I mean no offense …"
Wai cut him off. "Absolutely none taken. Our policy is that except in a case where the girls would call with something that needed immediate attention, we always give 48 hours notice that we'll need to get in to do regular maintenance."
"Aunt Elizabeth helped us write up a monthly budget to be sure we'll be able to afford the rent and utilities along with car insurance and all our other bills," Grace said.
"My parents said they'll be happy to co-sign for me if you need that," Kendra said.
"My grandma said the same thing," Linda added.
"Your grandma mentioned that when she stopped by this morning to view the apartment," Wai said. "She's a lovely woman. We're already discussing which old family recipes we can share."
Linda smiled. "That sounds like her."
"I'd be happy to co-sign as well," Danny offered.
Wai waved him off. "I consider myself an excellent judge of character. I've already turned away several potential renters because I could just tell it wasn't the right situation. What is it you kids say?" She grinned. "They didn't pass the vibe check."
The girls all laughed.
"But I think the three of you would be wonderful tenants and it makes me happier than I can tell you to be part of you taking those first exciting steps into adulthood." Wai beamed. "I remember how much I loved my first apartment."
All the adults nodded.
"Do you have any other questions at all?" Wai asked. "Please don't hesitate to ask."
Gabby glanced out the large front window, "What about parking?"
"There's room for everyone in the driveway," Wai said. "We added several extra spaces a few years ago. As you can see we extended the driveway so it goes all away around the house. The girls can park in front, my husband and I park in the back where our entrance is."
"I gave Mom a video tour yesterday." Grace bit her lip. "She's on board. So what about you guys?"
"It's a definite thumbs up from me," Catherine said without hesitation.
"Me too," Gabby agreed.
"With just a few minor safety upgrades I think it'll be great," Steve said.
All eyes turned to Danny.
"I can't believe this day has actually come. I was changing your diapers just yesterday." He beamed at Grace. "But I love it. I think you've found your first apartment."
