Chapter 2
It turned out that before he could call Boden to tell him that he needed to leave shift, he needed to talk to other people: his crew. He needed to tell the rest of Truck 81 that he wasn't going back to the firehouse with them, due to the fact that he was staying here to watch Gabby give birth. And luckily for him, they were all still there, in the waiting room; waiting for him to come out of the ER so that they could talk. And the moment he was out there, Stella got up and smiled at Matt. "What's going on? Is Gabby okay?" Smiling, Matt agreed as Gabby was okay. "Yeah, she's okay. What are you guys still doing here?" Andy sighed as he looked at his friend. "You can blame me for that. I refused to leave until I spoke to you. I wanted to make sure that you were okay, and that we could leave easily." Matt agreed with his best friend, glad that he did that as it was going to make things a lot easier. "Well, I need to call Boden."
Hearing Casey say his name as he walked into the hospital, Boden was confused as to just why Matt needed to call him. "And just why may you need to call me? Did one of the tests go wrong?" Turning around to face Chief Boden, Matt was surprised as he didn't expect him to come here. "What are you doing here, Chief?" Looking at Casey when he said that, Boden could ask him the same thing. "I could ask you the same thing, Captain. What are you doing here?" Casey sighed as he stood back and looked at everybody. "Ok. So, here's the thing. Chief, I'm going to need to stay here for a while." Boden was confused. "Why?" Matt smiled. "Gabby's here…and she's about to give birth." Turning her head, Stella was shocked. "You mean, you've been lying to me that she's pregnant for months!" Matt shook his head. "I had no idea she was pregnant, which was why I was surprised when I saw her there; pregnant with our kid."
Andy agreed, well aware that was the case, while also knowing the challenges which he and Gabby face. "Is she okay when it comes to that other thing that you told me about?" Turning their heads, Stella and Boden were both concerned when they heard that. "What, other thing?" Matt sighed as he looked at Andy, as this was the last thing he wanted to worry about. "Thanks for putting it in my mind again, Andrew! I was hoping NOT to think about the aneurysm while Gabby is still pregnant." Stella looked at Matt when he said that, getting quite concerned for her best friend. "Aneurysm?" She asked, well aware of just what that was. "Yeah, she has an aneurysm from her previous pregnancy." Upon hearing Matt say that, Boden just felt horrible over that. "Uhm, about that. Guys…right now, it's not the time to try and see Gabby. You see, I need to keep her calm and just take it easy with her. She needs to rest."
Andy agreed, well aware that was the case. "Yeah, the last couple hours are always the hardest." Matt shook his head, as his friend should know better based on the conversations they've had. "No, Andy; it's not about that. I'm more worried about the pressure you could put on her body, and therefore the aneurysm. If it bursts, then…" Matt took a breath, as he didn't even want to say it; though, he also knew that he needed to let people know just in case. "If it bursts, it could be fatal for Gabby and the baby." Upon hearing Matt say that, Stella was just horrified as she knew precisely what that meant: if this went wrong, then Gabby could die. "Oh, wow. I, uhm…" It was just then that Andy got close to Matt and proceeded to hug him, as he could tell that Matt was worried. "Hey, it'll be okay. Gabby's a fighter, and she's not going to give up without a fight. You know that about your wife, Matt."
Matt nodded, as he knew that was the case. He knew that Gabby was a fighter, which is precisely why he just had this gut feeling that everything was going to go okay somehow. "I know. I just….I'm worried. This is a lot to worry about, and I can only hope that everything goes okay; especially now that I know that we're having a son." Andy smiled when Matt said that. "Finally, then you can stop calling my sons your surrogate sons." Matt snickered. "Calm down." And that was when Matt heard Antonio. "For Christ's sakes, Jay. You couldn't get me here faster. The entire firehouse is here! What if Matt finds her?" Turning his head when he heard Antonio say that, Matt decided to tell him. "Antonio!" Turning his head when he heard Matt call for him, Antonio made a beeline for him. "Matt, what are you…" Matt just looked at Antonio when he said that. "Is it Gabby? Is she okay? What about the baby?"
Antonio then realized that Gabby may not have told him. "I mean…" Matt then stopped Antonio, as he knew all about the baby. "Antonio, I already know that I'm going to be a father. Don't worry, you didn't ruin that for me. I already saw Gabby, and she's just taking it easy in the ED. We're probably going to be moved upstairs soon, so that we can be close to where she's going to deliver. For now, how about you head in there and sit with Gabby? Just take it easy and relax. Please, don't make her get worried, Antonio. That's what we need to do. Just take it easy and breathe, no stress." Antonio agreed with Matt, only to hug him. "Thanks for being here." Matt nodded. "Just curious, how long have you known?" Antonio sighed. "She told me right away." Matt nodded. "And you would've told me if it came down to it." Antonio agreed. "Of course. Now, can I…" Matt agreed. "Go ahead but be easy with her."
Antonio agreed, more than ready to go see his sister; while Matt turned his head to turn his attention back to the firehouse. "Ok. Well, I need to go back there soon to make sure that everything stays calm. But, I need something from you first, Andy." Andy was confused. "What do you need from me?" Matt then turned to the rest of the house. "I got this guys." Everybody agreed, ready to go (except for Andy, as he asked him to stay). "Oh, chief." Matt said, as he went to take off his radio. "Do you mind taking this for me? I just need to ask Andy some things." Boden agreed as he made his way over to Matt and grabbed the radio. "Wish Gabby luck for us." Matt agreed, more than ready to do just that; just like he was ready to ask Andy some questions. But not the one he thought of. "Wait, is this you asking me to be the godfather already?" Matt just laughed as Andy asked him that question, as that wasn't happening.
He still couldn't stop himself from laughing, even though Andy was being serious. "I'm being serious, Matt." Matt agreed, as he knew that his best friend was being serious. "I mean, I made you Ben and Griffin's godfather." Matt agreed, as he knew that. "I know, but you do realize just who walked through the doors, right?" Andy then realized that was right: he had a brother-in-law. "Andy, I love you, but you know Gabby. You know that she's already got this all planned out. She's already got Antonio picked out as the godfather, and I'll probably get to pick the godmother…who will be my sister." Andy nodded, as that was the truth. "However, I need you to just take a breath as I need your help." Andy nodded. "What is it?" Matt sighed as he looked at him. "Andy, I need you to step up." Andy was confused. "What do you mean?" Matt bit his lip. "Andy, I can't predict the outcome of how this is going to go."
Andy then realized just what Matt was talking about: Gabby either living or dying. "Oh." Matt nodded. "So, I have no clue just how long I'm going to be out. I could be out for a paternity leave, or I could be out for much longer. Andy, I need you to talk to Heather and tell her that you need to cancel your vacation that you have scheduled for later in the year. I know, it's a lot to ask considering you booked it so long ago. And I know you said that you owe Heather another honeymoon, but I need you right now. I'm sure that, if you tell her everything, she'll understand." Andy agreed, as he knows that Heather will understand. "Also, I need some things. Like clothes and stuff since we may be here a couple days. Or…" Andy agreed, as he knew that. "Hey, I get that. And I promise, I'm also going to go shopping tomorrow with Heather so that we can get you everything you need for a baby." Matt laughed, as he was about to ask.
After all, he has nothing for the baby. "I love that idea. Just like I love the idea that you could drive my truck here, along with the rest of my things." Matt said, as he went to grab his keys out of his pocket; soon after, he handed them over to his best friend and smiled. "Make sure you clean out my locker, as I'm not coming back for a bit. I need some time with Gabby and our son." Andy smiled. "I still can't believe you're going to have a son soon." Matt agreed, though he was also worried at the same time. "I can only hope that I can also have a wife to raise our son with." Andy sighed. "I'll pray for you, but you need to remember that Dawson is a fighter. She's not one to give up without a fight. She's going to make it through this one way or another, and you guys are going to figure out a way forward. A much healthier way forward, as you guys are going to need a healthy marriage to raise your son in."
Matt sighed. "That is, if there's still a marriage." Andy shook his head. "Hey, stop with the negativity. I don't want to hear it. Gabby is the strongest woman you've met, she's the woman of your dreams, and she's a fighter. She's going to make it through this Matt, you and I both know that." Matt agreed, as he did know that. He knew that Gabby was going to survive, as she's a fighter. "I'm just scared." Andy agreed, well aware that Matt was scared. "I promise, we're going to make it through this together. You have nothing to worry about. We're all here for the both of you. Now, send Gabby our love and go support her. She's going to need you. Oh, and make sure that you stretch your hand a bit while you're sitting with her." Matt laughed and smiled, as he knew what he was talking about: she was going to squeeze it. "I'll call you later." Andy said, as he hugged his friend. "Things will be okay, I promise."
Matt agreed as he hugged his friend, quite worried; after all, this was his wife he was talking about. "I'll call you later." Matt agreed, as that was a good idea: for him to call him later. He just hoped that he didn't need to share the news he was hoping not to get from the doctors in the next 24-48 hours: that his wife died giving birth to their son.
Walking back into Gabby's room here in the ED, Matt smiled when he saw her and Antonio sitting together; only to look at the brother who was scared, he could just see it in his eyes. He was looking at Gabby the same way he first looked at her when he first got here, with terror in his eyes; but now, he was calm because he just had this feeling that everything was going to be okay. And that was precisely what he told his wife as he came into the room. "Is everything okay?" Turning his head, Antonio acknowledged that Matt was here. "Yeah, I just asked Andy if he could get my things for me at the firehouse. He said he will. Oh, and I asked him if he could please get us some things for the baby." Gabby smiled. "I'm sure he's going to love doing that, while also wishing that he was doing it for his and Heather's baby. He still trying to get her to go for #3?" Matt nodded, as he most certainly was.
And now that they were having a baby, he was sure that he was going to be trying even more. "And now that we're having a baby, he's going to try even harder." Matt said, as he made his way over to his wife and smiled as he leaned over her; only to press his lips to her forehead to get her to calm down. Something he asked her to do while whispering to her. "Hey, calm down for me babe. I see you tensing up and getting worried. It's not good for you or the baby." Gabby agreed with her husband, only to feel him lean over her and kiss her softly. After which, he pulled up and made his way over to Antonio. "How've you been? How's the recovery?" Getting up, Antonio smiled as he made his way over to his brother-in-law to hug him. "Good. Things are much better. I promise, I was sober while this one was pregnant. I moved to Puerto Rico to help her out." Matt agreed, truly appreciating that he did that.
And had he known that Gabby was pregnant, he would've done the same. "I hope you know that I would've done the same, had I known that Gabby was pregnant." Antonio agreed with Matt, which is precisely what he told his sister. "I said that to Gabby each and every time she got all emotional all the time. I told her to call you, because you'd come running to her the moment you knew she was pregnant. You'd come be by her side, to take care of her and help her with the pregnancy." Matt agreed, as that most certainly is precisely what he would've done. He would've taken care of his wife and made sure that she was okay. And now that he was here, he had every intention of doing that from now on, which is precisely what he was going to promise Gabby as he sat down on the stool and rolled over to her. After which, he grabbed her hand and smiled. "I promise Gabby, I'm here for you now."
Gabby agreed, as she knew that. "We may not have been in this together from the start, but we're going to be in this from now on. Me, you, and our little boy." Turning his head, Antonio was surprised. "You're having a son? I didn't know that. I thought you didn't know, either!" Gabby laughed. "Yeah, because I'm going to risk dying without know whether I carried on the Casey name, or whether I gave my husband a look-a-like daughter. Plus, I wanted to know how to address our unborn child in my…" Gulping, Gabby hated to talk about the thing she wrote, though, she needed to say it. "My equivalent to a suicide note." Looking at his wife when she said that, Matt shook his head as that was the last thing he wanted her to call this. "Hey, this isn't suicide Gabby." Turning her head, Gabby looked at the love of her life. "Matt, how is this not suicide? There's a chance this could kill me." Matt agreed with Gabby.
After all, that was the truth: there's a chance that this could kill here. "Gabby, there's also a chance that you could survive." Antonio agreed, as that was the truth. "Gabby, please. Think positively. That's what I did the entire way here when I learned that you were in town. I know that I'm not your husband, but I just knew that I needed to be here." Gabby then realized something. "Wait, did you tell dad?" Antonio bit his lip, as he's yet to tell Gabby that. After all, it was why he was in town. "Gabby, I was about to call you, but…" Gabby looked at Antonio. "He's in a coma upstairs. He got into a car accident two days ago. I just got in town." Gabby was shocked as she heard Antonio say that, before getting worried. "Wait, is he…" Antonio sighed. "He's in a Coma, here at the hospital." Matt got nervous as he heard Antonio say that, prior to looking at Gabby. "Antonio, outside for a minute?"
Gabby just shook her head. "Not yet. I just need to make sure that my brother knows that you had no idea about this. Antonio, he had no idea. This was all my idea. I need you to know that just in case…" It was just then that Antonio realized why she was saying that. "Matt didn't know you were pregnant, did he?" Gabby nodded and teared up. "I didn't tell him because I didn't want to have to give this baby up." Knowing how true that statement was, Matt sighed as he leaned over his wife and pressed his lips to her forehead. "And I was also scared, as telling more people would just make it even more real…and would mean that I need to say goodbye to my husband forever." And the moment Matt heard Gabby say that, he felt whiplash…as that was the last thing he wanted to hear. After all, he did that to her in the past and he remembered how much it crushed her; so, that was the last thing he wanted to hear.
He decided to take a breath before addressing his wife and what she said, as he knew that this was going to be hard on her; after all, she could easily be saying goodbye to them today. Yet, he also knew that her emotions were also running high due to the fact that they were in Chicago Med right now, where they lost their first baby. But right now, he wasn't going to let her believe that she was going to die. Rather, she was going to thrive. "Hey, listen to me, Gabby." Turning her head, Gabby looked at Matt. "You remember what you made me promise you after the factory fire?" Gabby nodded. "I made you promise me that you don't say goodbye again." Matt agreed with his wife. "And I'm not going to let you do the same, when we both know that there's a great chance that you can survive this. Baby, I believe you. I believe in you." Gabby agreed with her husband when he said that and smiled at him.
After which, he kissed her again. "You're going to survive, and we're going to make a beautiful nursery for our son." Gabby smiled when Matt said that. "Yes, we're going to make a beautiful nursery for Matt, Jr." Matt was surprised when he heard Gabby say that. "You want to name our son after me?" Gabby smiled, as that's precisely what she wants to do: name their son after him. "Yes. I want our son's name to be Matthew James Casey, Jr." Antonio snickered, as he doesn't know whether that's the appropriate name for their son. "What's so funny about that, Antonio?" Antonio smiled at his sister. "I thought you would want to honor yourself, considering you put your life at risk to make Matt a dad." Gabby nodded. "I thought about it, up until I learned it was a boy." Matt smiled, deciding to ask Gabby whether she'd go for the name on his mind. "How about both of us?" Antonio was confused.
After all, how can they name their son after each of them. "How can you name the baby after both of you?" Matt smiled as he looked at his gorgeous wife. "Gabriel Matthew Casey." Gabby smiled as Matt said that, as she loves that idea. "I love…." Feeling something in her move, Gabby went to reach for the button. "Doctor. Doctor." Matt then got worried. "Hey, stay with me Gabby. Stay with me, babe. Don't leave me, you hear me! Don't leave me!"
