Wow. Now if that last chapter didn't end in a scary place. Do you think that Gabby is going to be okay? Well, how about we find out whether Gabby's going to be there to raise her and Matt's son with the man she loves. Find out right now.
Gabriel Matthew Casey
Casey Recovery Room, NICU – To say that Matthew Casey was feeling a mixture of emotions right now was an understatement, especially considering his wife just had emergency surgery in order to save her life. And thankfully, that's precisely what the doctors were able to do: they were able to save her life after the worst happened, her aneurysm burst while she was pregnant with their child. But, luckily for them, they were in the hospital when it happened…which meant that it was all a waiting game now. Whether or not Gabby survived would all depend on whether or not she wakes up again. And as the hours went on (they were going on 14 hours since the aneurysm burst), Matt didn't know whether he should be happy or worried. After all, he could've shared his last kiss with his wife yesterday; the last kiss with the mother of his wonderful newborn son, who he was currently spending time with right now.
Just bonding and taking it easy, as he did some skin-to-skin with his twelve-hour old son shortly after feeding him a bottle of milk his wife prepared for him. "Your mommy really is a smarty pants, mister. Only your mommy would think about making some bottles of milk for you just in case she couldn't give you this type of love herself." Taking a breath as he said that, Matt could only hope that wasn't the truth for the rest of their son's life. He wanted more than anything to have Gabby wake up and hold their son in her arms, to hold her namesake son who she (almost) gave her life for. So much so, that he even went to the chapel already this morning to pray to God; something he hasn't done in a long time due to the fact that he's estranged from the Catholic church. But, he really needed god to be on his side right now, as he couldn't have just part of his dream life. He needed all of it: he needed Gabriel….and Gabby.
He needed Gabby in his life, as she's his other half. No, she's his better half. She makes him whole, especially when it came to his family. He didn't know how it was possible to love another human being as much as he did. That was, until he held his son in his arms for the first time. Just the way Gabriel cuddled up to him right away was perfect, especially since he really needed a distraction right now. A distraction from worrying over whether he was going to be a single father, or whether he was going to get to live his dream: to raise his child with the love of his life. And luckily, the later path was what the future held in store for Matthew Casey: a chance for him to raise his baby boy with the love of his life. "Matt?" Turning his head when he heard Gabby speak to him for the first time since she gave birth, Matt just felt so relieved over the fact that she was okay. That she was still here. "Baby." He said, while looking at Gabriel.
Only to realize that his dream just came true: he had both his son and his wife here with him, which was such a huge relief; after all, he thought that he lost Gabby for a while. But now that she was okay, he knew that he had to get up and be with her. So, he did just that as he picked Gabriel up and just held him close. "Hey buddy, you want to meet mommy?" Matt said as he ran his hand up and down Gabriel's back, more than ready to introduce him to Gabby; that way, he could hold his entire family in his arms. But first, he teared up at the sight of his wife being awake and alive. She actually survived. She was here, with him and Gabe. He was here with her, and she survived; that had to be the best part out of all of this: that Gabby was here with them. "You're here with me." Tearing up, Gabby nodded. "What happened?" Matt sighed as he look at Gabby. "Here, how about I give you Gabriel first? You can hold him now."
Gabby nodded, as that was precisely what she wanted to do: she wanted to hold her son. So, Matt laid him down on her chest and just smiled as this was exactly what he wanted to see: his gorgeous wife, holding their son in her arms in the hospital. And now that she was holding him, Matt could let out a sigh of relief due to the fact that everything seemed better now. "Oh, he looks so much like you." Matt agreed with his wife as she said that, only to open the covers on her bed so that he could sit with her this morning; after all, that was precisely what he needs right now. He needs to hold his wife in his arms, so that he can know that she's okay. And now that he was in bed with her, that was precisely what he knew: that she was okay and still here with him. "God, you're okay." Gabby took a breath as she felt Matt hold her close and cuddle up to her, especially since she didn't remember what happened.
Meanwhile, Matt proceeded to grab the covers and tugged them up on top of the both of them so that they were warm right now. "Matt?" Matt nodded as Gabby said his name as though she wants to ask him a question. "Yeah, baby?" Gabby sighed as she turned her head and looked at him. "What happened?" Matt sighed as Gabby asked him what happened, before thinking about it. "I don't want to think about it Gabby. But, I think you just felt something happening. We were in the middle of talking and…you reached for your call button." Gabby agreed with her husband. "So, your worst fear came true." Matt shook his head, as that wasn't true. His worst fear didn't come true, as she's still here with him. "No, that's not true…because you're still here, Gabby. You're still here, with me. You're here with me and Gabriel." Smiling, Gabby agreed with Matt. "I'm sorry for putting you through that." Matt agreed with her.
But, at least there was a good outcome. A couple good outcomes: they now have a son, Gabriel Matthew Casey; Gabby was still here with them, more than ready to raise their son with them; and even better, her aneurysm was gone…which was something he was more than ready to share with her now that she was awake. "Well, it's all good now because you're here; unlike your aneurysm, which is gone." Turning her head when she heard Matt say that, Gabby was shocked. "Did you just say that the aneurysm's gone?" Matt agreed with his wife and smiled, as that's precisely what he just told her: the aneurysm's gone, which meant that her life wasn't at risk anymore, and all it took was her giving birth. "To think, it only took you giving birth to Gabe there for you to lose the aneurysm." Turning her head to look at their son, Gabby smiled as she looked at her little boy. "Well, then thank you Gabriel."
Placing his hand on the back of his son's head, Matt smiled as he was extremely happy to finally be a dad. "No, thank you Gabby. And now that this has happened, I feel even more justified in changing our son's name. I know that you wanted to name him Matthew, Jr." Gabby agreed with Matt, as she knew that was the name she wanted to do at first; but, he convinced her to change it to Gabriel Matthew. "But now, I feel extremely justified over the fact that we decided to name him Gabriel. Gabby, you did it. You proved me wrong. You survived, and you finally ended my quest to be a dad. You made me a dad babe." Gabby agreed with Matt, well aware that was the case as she looked at Gabriel. "And you're also really smart for having made some bottles ahead of time." Gabby sighed as she went to rub Gabriel's cheek. "I wanted to make some just in case the worst happened. Then, he would have a bit of me."
Matt agreed with his wife, well aware that was the case. "Well, he has a lot of you. He looks like you." Gabby agreed, as she could see that in their son as well; she could see that their little boy most certainly does look like her. "And does it bother you that he looks like me?" Matt shook his head, as it didn't bother him one bit. "No, because it'll remind me just how much of a gift he truly is. Gabby, you have no idea how much I truly love you for what you did. You did the unthinkable, just for me." Turning her head, Gabby looked up into my eyes. "You risked your life to give us this life we have with each other. You risked dying, just to make me a father. That wasn't something I ever expected you to do, yet you still decided to do that. And since you proved me wrong, I can't help but feel grateful that you did so. I love you Gabby, and I find myself more in love with you than I was before we had Gabriel."
Gabby agreed with Matt, smiling as she turned her head and kissed the man of her dreams. "Does my family know?" And that was when Gabby heard her brother. "Oh, thank god, you're okay." Turning their heads when they heard Antonio walk into the room, Matt and Gabby both nodded. "Yeah, Gabby's okay." Matt then looked at Gabby. "Here, how about you give me Gabriel? That way, you can hug your brother. We both know that he wants to give you a hug after what happened." Gabby agreed with Matt when he said that, as she knew that was precisely what her brother was going to want to do: hug her. So, she agreed to give Gabriel to Matt so that she could hug her brother this morning.
Hugging Gabby this morning, Antonio couldn't help but feel relieved that she was okay right now. "How did you get in here? Visiting hours have to be closed." Matt snickered. "Antonio told them that he wasn't leaving until he knew that you were okay, which I agreed to. I said that they need to let him stay if they want me to pay the bill." Antonio laughed when Matt said that. "I'm surprised that even worked." Matt agreed with Antonio, as he felt the same way. "I was scared that they would refuse to give Gabby the surgery then." Antonio shook his head, as they wouldn't do that. "They're required by la…" Gabby then decided to interrupt her brother. "Ok. You can talk about that another time. I only gave Gabriel to Matt to hug you. I want to spend some time with my little man now that I've survived." Matt agreed with his wife, well aware that was the case; especially now that Gabriel just woke up again.
And he had a feeling it was due to the fact that he wanted to feed from his mom for the first time. "I have a feeling that Gabriel here wants to give you a chance to do something for the first time." Tearing up, Gabby agreed with Matt as she reached for Gabriel, which led to Matt giving their son to her and turning his head to look at Antonio. "Antonio, how about you go wait in the hallway and just take it easy? Maybe call your mom and let her know that Gabby's okay?" Antonio agreed with Matt, only to look at his sister. "You're okay, right?" Nodding, Gabby agreed as she most certainly is okay. She's here, with her boys. "I'm here, with my boys." Matt smiled as Gabby said that. "How about you spend some time with Gabriel? I need to talk to the nurse to get Dr. Letts here to check you out." Gabby was surprised when she heard Matt say that. "At this time of the night?" Matt agreed. "You were in emergency surgery."
Gabby agreed, as that made sense. "Okay. Well, before you do that…" Gabby then proceeded to grab Matt's hand. "I'm sorry Matt, I never intended for that to happen." Matt agreed, well aware that was the case. "Hey, I know that baby. Don't you dare think that I don't know that you never intended for that to happen. Do you really think that I thought you wanted that to happen? You want to live and raise our son together, which is precisely what we're going to do. I promise." Gabby agreed with Matt when he said that, only to feel him lean in and kiss her softly. Meanwhile, Antonio smiled. "I'll be in the hallway." Matt agreed as he watched Antonio walk out of their room once more, while he continued to kiss Gabby for a moment. "I promise, I won't be long." Matt said, prior to walking over to the chair he was just in to grab a shirt he can wear here in the hospital. "Aw, I liked the sight of you shirtless. You buffed up."
Matt smiled and agreed with his wife. "It helps my mental health. Plus, I had a bunch of time on my hands." Gabby agreed with Matt, well aware that was the case. "I promise, I'm here to stay." Matt laughed as he tugged his shirt down and adjusted it, making sure that he looked appropriate. "Oh, believe me…you aren't going anywhere with my son. I just about killed you." Gabby was confused when Matt said that, not understanding what he means by that. "Hey, what do you mean by that?" Matt sighed as he sat down on Gabby's bed again and reached for her hand. "Gabby, I was the one that got you pregnant with Gabe." Gabby smiled, as she liked that nickname. "That's a cute nickname for Gabriel." Matt agreed with his wife and smiled. "That's just his first nickname. His other one is my blessing. You're my miracle still. And don't say anything about that, you are my miracle Gabby. You survived and beat the odds."
Gabby agreed with her husband, as she always knew that she would. "I always had a feeling I would, but I hate that I had to put you through that Matt, I truly mean that. That was the last thing I wanted to do." Matt agreed with Gabby once more, well aw are that was the case. "Hey, I know that baby. I already told you that I know that. Listen, just breathe and take it easy. Everything's okay now. I'll get Dr. Letts for you, talk to Antonio, and then I'll be back when the doctor comes. That way, we can make sure that you're okay and figure out what the next steps are. Gabby, I get that you wanted to do this for me. To make me a dad." Gabby agreed. "But now, I need you to promise me that we're going to follow doctor's orders. I don't know what comes next, and whether you're out of the woods." Gabby took a breath when Matt said that, as she knew that was the truth. They didn't know if she was out of the woods.
That was still up in the air, whether she was out of the woods. "So, we're going to get a check up and see whether there's anything we need to do." Gabby agreed with Matt once more as he made his way back over to her, only to sit down on the edge of the bed and grab her hand. "And Gabby, I need you to promise me something." Gabby nodded. "What is it, baby?" Matt sighed. "Gabby, I love you. And I'm already madly in love with Gabriel. I love you for the risk you took, because it means the world to me that I'm worthy of you taking that risk. I feel honored to be the man you decided to take the risk for." Gabby agreed with Matt and smiled. "You're the love of my life Matt, I'll always take the risk for you." Matt nodded. "Well, now, when we see Dr. Letts…you need to listen to her this time. Gabby, we need to make sure that we follow her instructions to the letter, so that we can make sure that you're here for Gabriel."
Looking down at Gabriel when Matt said that, Gabby nodded as she knew that was the truth. She could no longer just think about herself, but instead had to think about their son now. She needed to do whatever she could to make sure that she was okay for Gabriel. "Whatever they need me to do Matt, I promise that I'll do it. That's something I'll do, for us." Matt agreed with his wife, well aware that she's going to do it. "I know you're going to do it, because you didn't really have a choice. Last time I checked, you just scared the crap out of me and had me thinking that I killed you." Gabby looked at Matt when he said that. "You still didn't answer my question." Matt sighed. "I created Gabriel, which put pressure on your aneurysm. I know it's crazy but…" Placing her hand on Matt's face, Gabby shook her head as it wasn't crazy. "No, I understand now." Matt agreed with his wife.
And boy is he glad that he understands. "Gabby, we'll talk, I promise. I want to fix things from before you left. And you need to promise me that you stay this time. After what just happened, I don't want you to be…." Matt then went to rephrase what he said. "No, I forbid you from leaving Chicago without me. Gabby, I know that this is me being hypocritical; but, you just about died and left me without you. We need to talk. But you need to promise me that you never leave my side when it comes to going anywhere. Can you promise me that you're going to stay in Chicago, and that I can trust you to stay and not just up and go to Puerto Rico with Gabe? Not have to worry about that?" Gabby agreed with her husband, as that was something she could promise him: that she was going to stay here in Chicago with him. "There's nowhere I'd rather be, especially when I've missed you like crazy." Matt agreed, as he felt the same way.
He's missed her more than anything. "Fresh start for us?" Gabby agreed with her husband. "Yes, fresh start." Smiling as he got up, Matt proceeded to lean over his wife and kiss her softly. "I love you. See you soon." Gabby agreed with Matt, smiling as she turned her attention back to Gabriel. Meanwhile, Matt took one last look at his gorgeous family before walking out to see Antonio in the hall.
Walking out into the hallway where Antonio was, Matt took a breath as he proceeded to close the door to Gabby's room behind him; only to soon turn his head and look at his brother-in-law. "How's she…" Antonio started saying, only to be interrupted by Matt hugging him tightly; to which Antonio responded by wrapping his arms around him as he was confused. "Hey, you okay?" Matt just took a breath as he was scared. "I'm just relieved and scared out of my mind after what happened." Antonio agreed, as that made sense. "Hey, I get that. Are you okay, though?" Matt shrugged, as he had no idea. "Listen, I need to get the doctor coming." Antonio agreed with his brother-in-law. "Just stay there, we can talk for a bit when I'm done." Antonio nodded, as he wanted to do the same. Meanwhile, Matt walked over to the desk. "Excuse me?" Looking up, nurse Doris smiled at Matt. "How are you, Matt?"
Matt smiled. "Good. But, do you mind calling Dr. Letts for us? She wanted to check on Gabby when she woke up." Doris agreed. "Of course. How's Gabby and your son?" Matt sighed. "Alive, and that's all that matters." Turning around to look at Antonio, Matt started to make his way over to him. "I'm sorry, I just…" Antonio shook his head. "No, I get it. That was scary. Are you okay?" Matt sighed as he went to lean against the wall. "I'm permanently scared by that. I thought that I was going to lose my wife yesterday." Antonio agreed with Matt when he said that, well aware that was the case. He knew that he thought that he was going to lose Gabby forever yesterday, but it turned out that he didn't; so, that was all that mattered at the end of the day. "Well, just be glad that you didn't." Matt shook his head as he stepped close to his brother-in-law. "No, you be glad that I didn't lose her yesterday."
Antonio was taken aback when he heard Matt say that. "Excuse me?" Matt nodded. "You heard what I said, and I meant it. I'm her husband, not you! You don't get to decide whether you tell me that my wife is pregnant when she has an aneurysm or not. You tell me if that happens again, and I'm not with her; not that I ever intend to be away from her again, as I want to always be with her and Gabriel. But you do not get to say anything about how this almost happened, when you could've told me months ago and I could've been prepared for this. I could've had a team ready ahead of time, like she clearly needed to have." Antonio nodded, agreeing with Matt as he knew that was the truth. "I know. And I'm sorry Matt." Matt agreed, well aware that he was sorry. "Sorry, I just…I need to get some frustration out somehow. And I can't blame Gabby for this, as she's blameless." Antonio looked at Matt as he said that.
After all, he didn't think that way. "Last time I checked, she hid it from you too." Matt looked at Antonio. "She hid it because she wanted to give me something I always wanted: to be a father. Without her hiding it from me, then I would've stopped her. She would've told me much earlier than she told you, and we both know that. But you could've told me when you knew, so that I could've been with her. But now, I'm here with her and that's all that matters at the end of the day." Antonio agreed, as that most certainly is the truth. "That most certainly is the truth. Now, how's Gabriel?" Matt smiled. "He's incredible and gorgeous." Antonio smiled when Matt said that. "Can I come in and meet him?" Matt shook his head. "In the morning Antonio. Right now, I need to let Gabby get checked up on by Dr. Letts." Antonio was confused. "Who's that?" Coming up to them, Dr. Letts smiled. "That'd be me."
Matt smiled when Dr. Letts appeared. "Dr. Letts, this is Gabby's brother Antonio Dawson. Antonio, this is the woman who saved your sister's life and made sure that my son didn't grow up without a mother." Antonio smiled as he got close to Dr. Letts. "Thank you so much." Dr. Letts agreed. "It was my pleasure. Now, how about we both head into the room so that I can check on Gabby, Matt?" Matt agreed with Dr. Letts when she said that, more than ready to let her check on Gabby.
