William and Dorothy arrive at her boarding house, when he asks, "do you live by yourself…"
"I have a roommate, my friend Katie. She is gone too work"
"Oh, does she work for the newspaper?"
"No, she's a nanny"
William nodded, as they got to her door, when the landlady saw them, "Miss Gurden! This isn't that kind of place!" As she does the sign of the cross
"Oh, no it's not like that Mrs. Lillian"
William shows her his badge, "Miss Gurden is helping me with a case."
"Oh" she responds but still suspicious
"Yes, I am regretting to tell you this, but Sam was found dead this morning"
Mrs. Lillian gasp, "no" and does the sign again, "what happened?"
"That's what we're trying to figure out, Mrs. Lillian. Did you know Mr. Mitchell well?"
"She did. Sam was her nephew"
"My condolences. Do you know who wished your nephew any harm?"
"No, but a couple of days ago, he came by for breakfast, he had a bloody nose from a fight he got into with his brother Phil"
"About, what?" Murdoch asked
"Not sure. I just asked him, what it was about, but and he said nothing harshly"
"Sam was harsh with you? That's not like him? What day was this and do you know where Phil is?" Asked Dorothy
"It was 4 days ago, and I haven't seen Phil since then"
"That's the day he asked me to keep the suitcase safe."
"Thanks, Mrs. Lillian. If you remember anything else, please inform us?"
"Of course, detective. Good day" nods and walks away
"Poor, Mrs. Lillian."
Dorothy says as she opens her door
"Were they close?" Murdoch asked
"Detective, she wouldn't do such a thing to Sam. She was very close to him, like a 2nd mother"
William nods, "ok, the suitcase is, under the bed, right?" He asks
"Yes" as they both look, and see nothing, "the suitcase is gone" William said
"Wait" as she gets up and pushes her bed to the side, and taps on the floor, as an edge of wood pops open
"A secret hatchway?"
Dorothy nods, as she opens the hatch up, and it shows 2 suitcases, and 3 small boxes, "anything that is important to me, or needs safe keeping, I put in the hatch"
"Ingenious"
She nods, grabs the suitcase and hands it to William, "have you looked into it, yet?"
"No, I haven't"
"This case is pretty damaged"
"It's a very old case, from his grandfather"
He places it on the bed and tries to open it, but can feel it's locked, "did he give you a key for it?"
"Oh right" and looks through her satchel and finds a key, and hands it too him
William, unlocks it and it opens up, but it's empty, "mmm, that's strange"
He raises his finger, "wait," and feels around the sides, and touches a bulk of something in a pocket, grabs his pocket knife and cuts the pocket and sees an 5 letters.
"What do they say, detective?" She asks him with her back turned away, as she reads her journal
"She keeps reading her journal, when he find clues…but why?" He asks himself
"Detective?"
William snaps out of it, "sorry?"
"The what does the letters say?"
"Oh, let's see" as he opens one at a time, "stop with the articles or you will be sorry, signed B.T."
"Brandon, Brandon Thomas, he was a rival of Sam."
"There's one suspect" as he opens another one, "I told you once, I'll tell you again! Stop, or you'll be sorry, signed you know who"
"I recognize the writing, but not sure, who?"
William nodded, and opens the last 3 that said the same, "you are being warned, M.K."
"Again, you'll be sorry, M.K."
"You were warned…now you will pay, signed M.K."
"I don't recognize the initials, but the letters sounds familiar…"
"How?" William asks
Before they could answer they hear a scream, from across the hallway. They enter the room and see Mrs. Lillian screaming at a body of a dead male, "I came into the room, to clean and found him like this"
Dorothy looks at the body, "that's Phil" as she and William do the sign of the cross in sync, and he looked at her, "your Catholic too?"
