After checking on Phil's body and sending it to the morgue, William asks, Mrs. Lillian, "sorry for your lost again"
Crying into a hanky as Dorothy comforts her, "who would harm my nephews?"
"We'll find out who did this" Dorothy said
"Why did you come into this room, anyway?" He asks and looks around, "it's quite empty"
"We have a new tenant, who needed a room."
"But I thought, Sophie rented this room?" Dorothy asked
"She moved out. Couldn't afford it. She just lost her job and moved out yesterday, back to Montreal. But she didn't know Phil"
"So, Mr. Mitchell, could have died between yesterday and today" William said, "thank you, and again sorry for your lost"
"Thank you, detective"
"Want me to stay with you?" Dorothy asked
"No, no, you find the bastard who killed my nephews. Excuse my language detective" and does the sign of the cross
"It's ok, and we will. When we find out, you will be the first to know" as he tips his hat and both him and Dorothy head to the station.
When they arrived, and entered into his office, he broke the silence, "you never told me, you were Catholic"
"Sorry?" She asked looking at her journal again
"When we saw Phil's body, you did the sign of the cross. You're Catholic, you never said it before"
"You never asked" she said and put her journal away
"Touché. Now let's figure out these letters"
As they were figuring out who sent the letters, there was a knock on the door, "sir" said George
"George, what have you?"
"We got in contact with Miss Page"
"Who?" Asked William
"Sophia, and…" Dorothy asked
"She left Toronto, yesterday around 9:00 am, and had heard about Phil from Mrs. Lillian but never laid eyes on him."
"Ok, any news about Brandon Thomas?"
"Yes, and a coincidence he's in Toronto and on his way in"
"Thank you, George. That will be all"
"Sir, Miss" George said as he nodded
"He truly was and still a gentlemen" Dorothy said out loud
"Sorry?" William asked
"Oh, constable Crabtree, he's a good man and constable. I can tell you both are good friends"
"He's my best friend, and was best man at my wedding. As well, godfather to my daughter, Susannah"
"Susannah, what a pretty name" she smiled
"Oh, yes, I never mentioned about her. She's 2, and quite a spirited young child, like her mother"
"She still is" she whispered
William looked at her sorry, when the phone rang, "detective Murdoch…yes Julia on our way"
And hung up the phone, "onto the morgue, Dr. Ogden is done with the postmortem"
They got to the morgue and were told Phil died by an overdose of insulin as well.
"This can't be…Phil wasn't diabetic" Dorothy said
"Well, I believe he was killed by mistake. The time of death was between 10:30 am and 1:30 pm, yesterday" Julia said
"A day before Sam. So, we can rule him out for the murderer" William said
"So, someone could have thought Phil was Sam." Dorothy thought out loud
"It appears, so Dorothy" William said
She covers her mouth, "did I say that out loud?"
"Yes" William said, "but, you make a good point, though."
"It makes sense, before Sophia, took the room, it was Sam's before he moved out."
"Why didn't his aunt mention that?"
"Who's Sophia?" Julia asked
"Former tenant of the room where Phil was found" William said
"As an answer to your question, detective, Sam moved out of the room, 6 months ago"
William nodded, and asked Julia, "anything else?"
"Not right now, but I'll let you know more"
"Thank you" and tipped his hat as he and Dorothy left the morgue.
When they got back to the station, they informed Brackenreid and George of the information and clues we have so far, "has Brandon arrived yet?" Dorothy asked
"Yes, he's in the interrogation room" George said
"Thank you, George. Miss…Dorothy want to join me?"
"For an interrogation, yes, please"
As they entered into the room, Dorothy stared at Brandon, "Dorothy, always a pleasure. Got into trouble again?" He said sarcastically
"Pleasure as always, and I'm helping the station with a murder"
"Who's?"
William places the photographs of Sam and Phil's dead body, "do you know these men?"
Brandon looks at the photographs, "what?" He gasps, "Sam and Phil are dead?"
"Yes, yesterday and this morning"
Tears in his eyes, she looked at him, and thought to herself, "I never seen Brandon get this emotional"
"How?" He asks
"They were overdosed on insulin. But Sam also suffocated." William said
"What?"
"We found peanuts shoved in Sam's mouth" Dorothy said
Brandon began sobbing, "I swear, I had nothing to do with this."
"Where were you between the hours, 10:30 am-1:30 pm yesterday and this morning?"
"Uhh, I was at visiting my sister, who's ill"
"Emily is sick?" Dorothy asked
"Influenza. I was with her, from 7:00 am yesterday to the time, I was called to the station."
"We will need an alibi to confirm your whereabouts" William said as he took the photographs away
"Of course, my sister, her husband, their children, maid and nanny were all there, they can clarify this."
"I'm curious, the way you're acting about Sam and Phil. You were always competitive, especially with Sam"
He sighed and wiped his tears, as he pinched the brim of his nose, "Dorothy, detective, can I be frank with you?"
They both nodded, "off the record?"
"Yes, just go on, Mr. Thomas" William said
"Sam and I we…we were lovers."
Dorothy gasp, "what, I knew Sam was a homosexual, but I…"
"You didn't know I was his lover? He didn't want people to know, and the rival thing was to throw off your scent."
"And what about this letter?" William asked and showed him the letter
"Oh, this letter it was a goof. It has a code in it. It was a love letter for us to meet."
"What does it say?" Dorothy looks at the letter
"Under a lamp it will say, to meet at the club tonight."
"What club?" She asks
"You know the club, Dorothy. I see you go there with different dates often"
"And Phil?" William asked
"Phil and I worked together and have become good friends the past year."
"Do you know who would wish, either harm?"
He shook his head, "no, but the other day Sam, had a bloody nose from a fight with Phil."
"We know about this fight. Do you know what it was about?" Dorothy asks
"About their grandfather's war pin. Something about in their grandfather's will, that the pin was supposed to go to someone else in the family before Sam."
"Do you know who?" William asks
"I wanted to ask, but Sam said, to forget it"
"Thank you, for your cooperation, Mr. Thomas"
"Of course. If there is anything else, I'll inform you both. Right now, I just…"
William raised his hand, "thanks, we appreciate it"
As him and Dorothy left the room, to this office, "well?"
"He's not the killer" Dorothy said
"I agree. But you didn't mention Sam and you were a homosexuals"
"Again, you didn't ask"
"Can you please stop saying that. Also, why do you keep looking at your journal?" He asks when there was a knock on the door, "sir" George said
"What have you?"
"I can confirm Mr. Thomas was at his sister's house, from 7:00 am yesterday to the time we called him in."
"Thank you, George you can let him go"
"Sir"
"So, what now?" William asks
"Put the kettle on, detective. I am going to the water closet" as she takes off her satchel and places it on his desk
"Sure, it's up the stairs, first door on your right"
"Thank you" and leaves
When she is out of sight, he looks into the satchel and finds the journal, and is about to read it when Brackenreid and George comes into his office, "you got the journal, Murdoch?"
"I need to know"
"We all need to know" Brackenreid said
