Hughie was alone in the shop, trying to keep his mind off the chaos of the past few days. The events with A-Train had left him shaken, and he couldn't focus. Suddenly, the bell over the door chimed, and Hughie looked up, expecting a customer. Strangely there was noone except the door closed slowly.
"Hello." Hughie called uncertainly.
"Who are you?"
"The fuck!" Hughie exclaimed in panic. Where was the sound coming from.
"Right in front of you, prick!"
"You think I wouldn't find this thing?" The voice called out as it suddenly materialized a small coin.
Hughie's eyes widened comically as he saw the bug which he had planted on the Vought tower.
"Hughie." The voice called out as Hughie's Shop ID suddenly floated in air, as if grabbed by some invisible hand. Suddenly Hughie felt a tremendous force pulling him downward. His face hit the glass cabinet as he was suddenly yonked from behind the cabinet to the front of it now.
Hughie suddenly felt invisible hands holding him up in the air. He didn't have time as he was suddenly thrown to the wall full of TVs and other items in display.
"You pussy, I followed you from the f*cking Tower." The angry invisible voice proclaimed. It plucked a TV from the wall and hoisted it in the air to throw it at the kneeling boy.
"No, no, no!"
"Who's that guy you were with, in the car?" The voice asked once more angrily. He held the TV in the air once more to finally throw it down at him.
Before Hughie could respond, the glass panes shattered as a car crashed through the front of the shop. The vehicle skidded to a halt, and Butcher emerged from the driver's seat cockily. He looked around with the crowbar in his hand.
Translucent fought back sneakily, using his invisibility to his advantage. Butcher tried to hit him but Translucent used his invisibility to his advantage perfectly. The two men grappled fiercely, smashing into shelves and displays, turning the shop into a war zone while spitting insults at each other. Hughie, dazed and injured, crawled around to be safer.
Somehow, in all that, Butcher had somehow figured to track Translucent. He had spit out his blood on the invisible man, marking him for the fight easily now.
Hughie saw his chance. With trembling hands, he grabbed the loose power cable from the broken television. Summoning every ounce of courage, he lunged forward and used the cable to shock Translucent. The power cable sent a powerful jolt of electricity through Translucent's body.
Translucent convulsed. With a final, pained gasp, he collapsed to the floor, unconscious and invisible. Butcher, breathing heavily, got to his feet and looked down at the fallen supe.
"Nice work," Butcher said, giving Hughie a nod of approval. He then delivered a vicious kick to Translucent's motionless body. "Stay down, you invisible fuck."
The store was eerily quiet in the aftermath, the only sound the distant wail of sirens. Hughie leaned against a broken display, trying to steady his racing heart. Just as they began to catch their breath, the sound of footsteps echoed through the destroyed entrance.
A boy, no older than Hughie, walked in with a calm and confident demeanor. He had dark hair and wore a casual outfit.
Butcher and Hughie turned to face the newcomer, their own expressions a mix of wariness and panic. The boy, unfazed by the scene before him, glanced at Translucent's unconscious form marked with blood of Butcher and then back at Butcher and Hughie.
"Is he down?" the boy asked, his voice completely steady and composed as if he wasn't enquiring about one of the Seven.
Butcher narrowed his eyes, stepping forward cockily with a smirk. "Who the fuck are you?" he demanded, his tone filled with suspicion.
"You don't need to know." He surveyed the wrecked shop with an air of detached curiosity. "I just want Translucent. The man's a major pay day."
Hughie, still struggling to process everything, glanced at Butcher, who seemed equally taken aback. Butcher's eyes flicked back to the boy, scrutinizing him closely. The boy didn't seem to be scared or anything. As if he was trained and bred like a weapon or a warrior. "What the hell are you doing here, kid?" he asked, his voice still edged with distrust.
The young boy shrugged nonchalantly. "Nothing. I just want Translucent. Gonna sell him to the highest bidder."
Butcher exchanged a quick look with Hughie before turning back to the boy. "Look boy, the sirens are coming closer. We better hurry before the cops and the Seven gets whiff of what happened here." Butcher spoke up gruffly, wiping the blood from his mouth.
"Reasonable." The boy finally spoke up after a moment. "Let's place him in your trunk." He advised as he went near the head part of the invisible member of the seven.
"You. Quickly erase the CCTV." The boy called out to Hughie, who dumbly nodded. Hughie went back to the store computer and quickly erased everything of today. He took out the drives and quickly pocketed them in his pant pockets.
"You a supe? Coming with us?" Butcher asked to the boy. The boy knew about them. For some reason, Butcher had a gut feeling that the boy was dangerous. It was the way he carried himself. The same way, he did himself. Like an alpha male. Those eyes were also easily recognisable by him. Those were the same ones he used to see in the mirror a decade before. The eyes of a man who didn't want to be crossed.
"It will be foolish not to. I wanna know what you did that pissed him off. I have been sniffing around the secrets of Vought and even I hadn't pissed one of them so greatly." The boy replied as he took the seat next to the driver.
Butcher smirked. Well, the boy seemed to be against Vought too. "It's gonna be a long ride then, boy." He got into the car. It was funny that he found another like him today. Maybe, he could offer the boy to join him in his quest. Besides, the boy hadn't said or denied anything about the supe part. The chances were heavy that he might be a supe.
"Come on Hughie." Butcher called out to the last member.
Hughie nodded and quickly took a seat at the back as Butcher reversed the car with great speed. He swiftly drove away from the scene with a practised ease as the sirens approached closer.
The car rumbled down the darkened streets, Butcher at the wheel. His expression a mix of determination and curiosity. Kevin sat beside him in the front seat, casually looking out the window, while Hughie was in the back, glancing nervously between the two of them. The trunk rattled occasionally, a constant reminder of their unconscious passenger.
"Right," Butcher began, breaking the tense silence. "I'm Butcher, and this here is Hughie."
Kevin nodded, a smirk playing on his lips. "Kevin. Nice to meet you both," he said smoothly.
Butcher glanced at Kevin out of the corner of his eye. "So, what is it you do, Kevin?"
Kevin leaned back, looking completely at ease. "Freelancer, mostly. I hack computers, crack accounts, make myself a few million with a little play on the keys. You know, the usual."
Butcher chuckled, a hint of admiration and approval in his voice. "Sounds like a fun gig. I'm a freelancer too," he said with a smirk.
Hughie, unable to contain his anxiety any longer, blurted out from the back, "What are we gonna do with Translucent in the trunk? We can't just drive around with him forever!"
Butcher's smirk widened. "Don't worry, mate. I'll take care of Translucent."
Kevin raised an eyebrow, his expression sly. "You better," he said. "But just so you know, there's a tracking chip inside him. Vought won't miss him until it's too late, or unless his signal suddenly disappears."
Butcher's eyes narrowed. "And how the hell do you know that?"
Kevin rolled his eyes. "Vought files are easy to hack. They have decent firewalls, but nothing I can't get through. I'd advise you to drive around the city for a bit, then block the signal far away from your base. Just in case Vought decides to trace his last known location. Meanwhile, I shall replicate his signal and form a distraction around him."
Butcher frowned, processing the information. "Alright, makes sense. But what's in it for you?"
Kevin's smirk returned. "I have a trick to kill Translucent. Plus, I'd like a limb or a leg for inspection. There's a hefty bounty from China, Russia, and a few other countries' intelligence agencies. You know, they had wanted to get hands on these superheroes for a long time. And a member of Seven is going to make billions."
Hughie and Butcher both frowned at this. Hughie spoke up, his voice shaking. "You want to send parts of him to foreign governments? That's... That's insane! That's terrorism."
Kevin shrugged, looking pointedly at Butcher. "It's lucrative. And I don't have any moral qualms about it. Besides, surely the man here works with the MI6. The British accent is real."
Butcher let out a low chuckle. "Aye. Born British, American by heart, mate."
Butcher met Kevin's gaze, considering his next move. "We took Translucent down together. Maybe we all should work together on this one. A common enemy we all have."
Kevin pondered the request. "Hmm. I might consider it," he said slowly. "You know, it does get boring to work alone after this long. Though, won't assuring that I will join, unless I see your team and know what you want. You some right bastard if one of the Seven came directly after you."
Butcher gave a smirk at that. It seemed he was looking at a junior him, MM and Frenchie, put together. The boy certainly carried himself that way.
"I am." Butcher affirmed with a lopsided grin.
