When the elevator opened at the topmost floor, the group slowly exited and looked around the hallway. It was just like the base floor, but the sounds of BuzzTube as a whole were much more subdued and muffled. It gave the area a much more tense and… kinda foreboding feeling. It was so apparent that Candlehead and Rancis nervously shuffled behind Ralph, hoping he would protect them from any sort of made-up boogeyman.
The wrecker didn't mind, as the whole atmosphere even put him a bit on edge. But he swallowed his apprehension and headed down the hallway to the left, seeing it as more decorated and a bit wider. He hoped that was a tell this was where Yesss' office was, so he trucked on with a determined face.
As the others followed him, Taffyta and Vanellope lagged behind a bit to chat. "How are you holding up, Prez?" Taffyta asked.
Vanellope shrugged. "Better than before, but still not the complete best." She sighed quietly. "Man, I really need to just relax…"
"I'm guessing before we ran into you guys, you were…?"
"Upset? That's an understatement. I was… It's like my vision blurred and I just lashed out…" The candy president looked off to the side. "I just feel like… I failed you guys…"
Muttonfudge gave her friend a confused look. "Wait, what? Vanellope, you didn't fail us. What happened was out of your control."
"I know, I know… I just have that feeling. See…" She discreetly glanced at Ralph, making sure he wasn't listening. "I have some other friends, and we all dealt with our own problems. My friend Star is being bogged down by her mom's expectations, my friend McGee has to put up with some egotistical rich boy who endlessly pushes his buttons, and my friend Caleb, he…" The racer trailed off and fell silent.
Taffyta gave Vanellope a concerned look, her eyes dulling in worry. "Wow, I… I didn't know. And… you all rely on each other to just… make it through?"
Vanellope nodded. "We all went through a lot of hard times, and as much as I don't act like it, what happened when Turbo took over still haunts me. I still don't fully remember how he did it, but I obviously did something stupid that let him get close and take everything away from me. I became alone and scared… And, I'll be honest Taff, you and the others scared me so much…"
A look of heartbreak and guilt washed over Taffyta's face as Vanellope continued. "I did my best to not be fazed by any of it, but how you guys all looked at me, what you said, how you acted… It scared me. It scared me so much that I didn't feel safe in the game that was clearly my home. I'd have some nights in my little base where I'd just cry because everything was just… Against me…"
The other racer was quiet as a lump formed in her throat. "Did you tell Ralph about this?" Vanellope nodded. "Why didn't you tell the rest of us? I thought we… We knew we messed up, and tried to make it right."
"I know, and it did help that you guys were trying so hard. But… But that feeling still lingered. I still felt off some days, which is why sometimes when I was clearly going to win the RRR, I'd choke right at the end and get last. It's those days where I can't get Turbo's face out of my mind, and you're guys' mean comments come rushing back, and…" Vanellope fell silent, and looked away from her friend.
Taffyta has silent tears trailing down her face, looking her friend over with a shattered expression. "Vanellope… I'm so sorry. I know you don't blame us for what happened over the fifteen years of your forced exile, but… But I blame myself for not thinking. You were one of us, and I should have known better. Because now, even though you might win a bit too much at the races… You're awesome."
Both girls shared a light smile, and the candy president wiped her eyes. "Thanks, Taff. I'm getting better, but it's really hard sometimes… After all of this is said and done, regardless if we get the wheel or not… I think all of us racers need to do something. Something together just to help me get better sooner."
Taffyta wiped her own eyes and held Vanellope's hand, giving her a reassuring and warm look. "Don't mention it, Prez… And I'd like that idea, yeah. Let's do that." The diva then pulled out another lollipop out of thin air and handed it to Schweetz, who took it with a grateful look and placed it in her mouth.
Rancis and Candlehead shared a look, having heard most of what was said, and looked just as guilty and saddened by Vanellope's issues. Deep down, all the racers did blame themselves for how they acted over the fifteen years, and were hurt in different ways because of Turbo's manipulation. Heck, despite Sugar Rush's happy demeanour, everyone had an underlying sense of trauma that made them act out in private.
It was especially bad with the racers, Wynchel and Duncan. They all played a part in hurting Vanellope, so even five years after everything was fixed, they always felt like it wasn't enough to really fix things. But since Vanellope was never open about how negatively she was impacted, they felt things were okay.
This was something they needed to talk about after all of this.
Ralph was oblivious to all of this, but did feel like things weren't okay. So he glanced over his shoulder, but when he saw the four racers looking decent, he brushed it off as just him being paranoid. When he turned his attention back ahead, he saw there was a fairly elaborate double door on the left wall. There was a bunch of decorative furniture around it, and some photos and paintings of a blue woman with a kind of mohawk, blue tinted sunglasses, and a luxurious fur coat.
The racers took notice of the new scenery, and glanced around, eventually landing on the image of the woman.
"I'm guessing that's Yes", Rancis said softly.
Taffyta squinted at a plaque on the bottom of one of the frames. "He name is Yesss. Yes but with three S'."
"That's a weird way to spell it", Candlehead said with a confused look. "Is she part snake?"
"For all we know, maybe", Vanellope said bluntly with a shrug, the lollipop still in her mouth.
"Kids, shush", Ralph said in a scolding tone. "If she heard you say that, she definitely wouldn't want to help us. So I need you four to be on your best behaviour, and only get all cutesy if I can't convince her, okay?"
The racers all looked up at Ralph and nodded quickly, which made the wrecker smile like a proud uncle. With that set, he turned around and looked at the door, took a slow breath to calm his nerves, and walked forward. He pressed his hands on it, and pushed the double doors open.
The room beyond was a massive room with an absolutely gigantic tinted window to the left that overlooked the central part of the building. Elaborate chandeliers hung from the ceiling, and with the window it gave the room a very moody sort of lighting. Across the room was a desk that had yess sitting at it, with a well dressed, also blue-skinned, man standing next to her. Both surge beings were looking down at a tablet, quietly talking about something that Ralph couldn't quite make out.
As he approached, Yess glanced up and everything fell silent aside from the muffled sounds of the central area.
"Ummmm…" Ralph cleared his throat and stood straight. "Hi. I'm-"
"Yeah, sorry, I'm not seeing anyone right now", Yess said, interrupting him. The wrecker was left dumbfounded as the sassy and dismissive infliction in the site owner's voice made his heart drop. "I'm much too busy to deal with anyone, and I don't remember any sort of appointment. Which… How did you get here?"
"I talked with staff and they let me through", the wrecker said firmly. "Because, see, I ran into your friend Shank." He pulled out the card and showed it to her.
Yesss' face instantly lit up as her coat literally lit up. "Why didn't you start with that? If Shank sent you here, then it must've been for a good reason." She stood up and made her way over, looking the wrecker over. "What's up with the look? Going for a 'disgruntled hobo' look?"
Ralph's eyes widened in shock as the racers all started whispering in indignation. "What? No, this is just my look. I'm Wreck-It Ralph, and Shank said you could help us with our money problem."
Yess cocked an eyebrow as the other guy, presumably her assistant, started tapping away at the tablet. "What kind of problem?"
"Basically, we come from an arcade", Ralph explained, gesturing to himself then the racers. "And on Friday some kid wrecked their console. So we came to the internet with some of our other friends to get a new steering wheel. But… A little mess up means we need 30 thousand dollars to buy it from eBay."
Yesss pursed her lips. "Huh, well that is a money problem if I've ever heard…" Her eyes suddenly flashed with realisation. "Wait… Did you try to steal Shank's car?"
The wrecker sighed. "Yes. See, our other two friends are doing some loot hunting to try and get some cash, but it wasn't going by fast enough. Shank's car gave us the most payout, so me and her", he gestured at Vanellope, "Tried to get it."
The living BuzzTube algorithm scowled lightly. "Uh huh. Well, I guess if you're here then Shank thought I could help you." The was a lull for a moment. "But I can't."
The racers all immediately looked crushed. "What?" Candlehead in growing sadness.
"See, despite what you might think, my site isn't doing too hot right now." Yess started to pace as she ranted. "Me and Maybe have been doing as best as we can to keep this sinking ship afloat, but YouTube is just so much more well known and popular that we haven't even come close to their numbers. So I'm sorry, but I can't help you."
"Wait, no, Miss Yesss", Rancis said as he ran up a bit desperately. "We really need this. We learned you could make money making videos, and if this helps us get the wheel we'll help you any way possible."
"Yeah!" Candlehead cried out as she ran over and looked up at the algorithm with pleading eyes. "Please, Miss Yesss. If we don't get the money by the end of Sunday, we lose the wheel and our game gets unplugged for good!"
Yesss looked very on the spot, but still unsure. "Look, I'm sure you kids are sweet and all, but I have a lot on my plate. I'm this site's algorithm, which means I run everything. So you'll have to just let me try and keep my site afloat."
"Wait, Yess", the man said. Ralph assumed this was the Maybe Yesss mentioned earlier, and he watched as the assistant walked up to him and looked him over. "I think I have an idea that could help out both sides."
The algorithm cocked an eyebrow. "And what's that?"
"Well, you've been saying how you need a star like how YouTube has Markiplier or Jacksepticeye, and I think Ralph could be our answer."
Yesss' coat lit up again. "Oh… I see what you mean…" She looked at Ralph, and a smile slowly grew on her face.
The wrecker gave them both a confused look. "So that means you will help us?"
"On one condition, muscles", Yesss said pointedly. "I'll help you get the money for your steering wheel if you help me make my site more popular. I want you to be my star, the big face that people can only come here to find."
"So you'll also help us make videos?" Vanellope asked hopefully.
"You bet, sweetheart. I have a whole district of staff who are ready for this exact situation, so you'll be able to get these videos done rapid fire."
Ralph looked a tiny bit unsure. "Okay, but I need to know something first. How much money will we get, and how will we know we even made any?"
"That's where this comes in, Tall and Strong." She pulled out a small device and handed it to Ralph, who opened it like a flip phone and looked it over. "This will be your access to your BuzzTube account that'll tell you all the cash you've made. For the money itself… Just let me handle that."
Ralph nodded and put the device into his pocket, then glanced down at the racers. "By the way, Yesss. The kids get to help, otherwise I won't help you."
"That's perfectly fine. Now, Maybe will take you to the green rooms, I'll deal with the other stuff and join you all later."
Before any of the arcade denizens could question what she was going to do, Maybe led them out of the room, and the door closed shut on its own. Ralph pursed his lips as he followed after the racers and assistant. As he did, he glanced back, hoping this would work out for the better.
~X~
The green rooms were a bit of a lie. It was more of a massive singular room with multiple areas marked with green and blue screen, with various props around in random places. Staff and crew ran around as the call from Yesss echoed throughout the entire room that they were finally putting their skills to use.
Ralph and the racers sat on some fold out chairs that had their names on it, waiting for everything to be set up. The racers drank some juice while Ralph was given a simple glass of water, eyeing everything with an intrigued look.
"I gotta be honest, this is pretty cool", Ralph said to the racers. "We get to see how this sort of stuff is made."
"Honestly, since we have so many hands on deck", Vanellope said. "I wouldn't be against tagging in sometimes."
"That was part of my idea", Maybe said as he walked up to the group. "Since you need a lot of money, I was thinking we could split you up under one umbrella." He swiped his fringe on the tablet screen and showed the group. "While Ralph is working on his own videos, I want all of you four together doing your own thing. Then at points, you can crossover and do a collaborative video."
"Okay, that's cool", Taffyta said in a flat tone. "But my question is how will you get people to even watch our videos? Unless you somehow have a way to literally force them into people's eyes."
"That's where Yesss being the algorithm comes in", Maybe continued. "She knows what's popular, so she'll have you do things that are trending, that'll get people's attention, and you'll get a lot of views."
"Okay", Rancis said with a smile. Then he frowned. "But then that makes me wonder what is popular right now?"
"Well…" Maybe looked down at his tablet screen. "There's make-up tutorials, unboxing, baking lessons, challenges like eating hot peppers and sitting in an ice cold pool, and let's plays. There's a couple more, but Yesss doesn't like them so she'd rather not have you subjected to it."
"That's nice!" Candlehead said happily. "So are we going to tackle our own things, or what?"
"Actually, all that I listed will be what Ralph does. For your for", maybe pointed at the racers, "I have an idea to have you do your own little series of shorts that compliments Ralph's content. That way we can rope more people in quicker."
"Cool", Taffyta said. "Just a warning, I'm very picky, so don't make me do something I don't want to."
"She's right, we get first hand experience with that", Vanellope, Candlehead and Rancis simultaneously. They all shared looks and then started laughing while Taff shot them a flat glare.
Maybe smiled lightly and walked off, calling after a cameraman who was struggling to move a camera. Ralph huffed out a laugh and leaned back in his chair, returning to watching everyone run around and get set up. As he did, Yesss finally joined them and sat next to the wrecker in her own chair. She was dressed like a director with the flair of her previous outfit.
"Alright, so, since we're going to be together for a while", she began, pulling out her own water bottle. "I want to know, what's your story, Wreck-It?"
Ralph chuckled. "Did you look up my game?"
"Oh, of course. But I need to know your story, about everything that went on with you."
The wrecker sighed. "Man, that's a long and very emotional story. You sure you're okay with me talking your ear off?"
"Hey, I got nothing better going on", Yesss said as she shot him a sassy grin. "So talk away."
"Alright. So, there's over 30 years of build up for it…" As the crew continued to work, Ralph told Yesss his story from the 30th anniversary to right now. As he spun his story, the racers all chimed in at the appropriate times to give clearer context. The algorithm was listening intently, her expression shifting from intrigue, to shock, to sadness, to relief, to anger, and joy.
As the story hit the current events, Yesss' expression became a forlorn sadness as she glanced at the racers, who all looked down as they re-explained their current predicament. As the story wrapped up, which was right as Ralph's first video set was almost done being set up, the site owner and her now present assistant gave the group a reassuring but sad look.
"Hearing all of that, I really don't blame you for going after Shank's car", Yesss said. "Her car is so sought after that some of my own staff tried to steal it. It's how we first met and became friends."
"That's cool", Ralph said with a smile as he stood up. "Whelp, I'm going to get to work. Wish me luck, kids, and I give you full right to laugh at me if I trip and fall on my face."
"You got it, Stinkbrain", Vanellope said with a smirk. Ralph barked out a laugh as he made his way over to the set, which was a bit basic with some miscellaneous props scattered about.
"Alright, Ralph!" Yesss called out. "This is just for your channel intro. Follow the cue cards, but give it your own spin. Just be yourself!"
The wrecker nodded, and when the cameraman gave the go ahead, they started rolling. Vanellope tilted her head slightly as Ralph started playing out in his first video with his usual charisma and energy, his goofy but welcoming smile plastered on his face. While some of his line reads were a bit stilted, he was surprisingly good considering this was his first time doing this.
Although considering what Majima made them do sometimes wasn't surprising. He loved setting them up in front of a camera just so they all could have a good long laugh later. The memories of those past instances made the candy president smile and let out a giggle in her head. But as the memories finished playing through and she went back to watching Ralph act out, she got a bit bored and decided to explore.
She jumped out of her chair and made her way elsewhere in the area, looking around in curiosity and wonder. All the equipment was not something she ran into normally, and even when she did see it, it was never this close.
As she wandered around, she found herself drawn towards one of the unused sets, which was currently just storage for a bunch of random props themed around what she assumed were kids cartoons. And specifically the really young kind, based on the limp puppets that reminded her of Sesame Street.
She walked over to one that looked like a bootleg Elmo and lifted it up, looking it over with a careful eye. The puppet was cute, but there was something unnerving about how lifeless and empty it was. But Vanellope also found it a bit cute, so carefully and discreetly she stuffed the puppet into her sweater pocket. With her souvenir secured, she made her way back over to the others, who were just now following after Maybe. Yesss wasn't but based on her posture it was just that the assistant was just showing them around.
When Vanellope sat in the chair next to the algorithm, she glanced over with a light smirk. "If you wanted to keep the puppet, you could've just asked, kid."
The racer blushed, and pulled out the felt being. "I just… wanted something to remember this trip by. Something that isn't a wheel that looks identical to the old one."
"Hey, it's all cool V. I get it. Plus, I was planning on getting rid of that stuff anyway, so you taking that means less money spent on clean up costs."
The racer hummed. "The internet runs on a lot of money, huh?"
"You don't know the half of it, V, but yeah. That's the simplest way to explain it without going into subscriptions, net neutrality, and online banking, because I don't want you getting buried in all of that. You're young, and I don't need you worrying about all of this adult stuff."
"Yeah, thank…" Vanellope's gaze returned to Ralph working on the set, having now moved on from the introduction video and started a simple baking tutorial. He was making a thing he was always proud of that was actually really good. What he called the pixel cookie cake, which always made her mouth water.
Glancing over at Yesss, it was clear she was getting enticed too by the delicious dessert. Ralph was really good at this.
Vanellope smiled, which became even more bright as the wrecker baked more and more. They had this in the bag, even if this would take a long time.
When Ralph wrapped up filming the video, he walked over and grabbed his glass of water, taking a swig. "Boy, that was really nice. Now more people will actually know how to make my special little dessert." He looked over at Vanny, and smiled. "How about you, kid? How're you holding up?"
"Fine, just watching you makes me want to get out there and act."
"Well, I think it's a good idea to get started on your end", Yesss said. "Head over to the area marked with that." She pointed at the large arrow that pointed down at a different area. "So good luck, I'll swing by and check up on things."
"Well, good luck, kid!" Ralph said warmly. "Here's to our next few hours."
"Yeah, you got it, Stinkbrain. Good luck, talk later!"
The racers parted and headed on her way, and Ralph set his water down and went to start filming his next video. Both of them knew this would take a while, so hopefully they'd keep up with the high demand.
Ralph glanced back at Vanellope, and gained a determined look. For Sugar Rush, he thought to himself, for Vanellope.
~X~
And that's chapter 10! Halfway through the complete total of 20, which is crazy to me. That means, right now, I've written over 140 chapters, which is just ridiculous. But I'm still immensely proud of myself making it this far.
Anyway, Yesss is here! She's been changed a bit from the original, with her reason to helping Ralph and the racers being a bit more for personal gain. See, it's because how BuzzTube was handled is a bit weird. Like, no other video sharing site on YouTube's level don't usually survive because YT is so massive.
So why not have it where she decides to help the group if they help her site get more popular by giving them a big name that's exclusively her's? That way she has more of a stake in the story, and could get her own amount of development. Like, I did like her in the og movie, it's just that her and Spamley didn't really do a whole lot. So now they both have a deeper dig into the importance of the plot.
Hopefully that works for y'all, because I felt it was just a good choice to help make this story more. I wanted the characters to have more of a presence that actively help in the quest to get the money. Shank's presence is basically equal, as she was honestly perfectly fine in the original sequel's story.
Yes, I like her actually just being a good person and not a secret villain or just a bad person in general. Sorry jbwarner86. I love your WiR fics (you're a massive inspiration for this fic), but I wasn't a massive fan of how Shank was handled in It's A Slaughterful Life. Just my own opinion.
Okay, so, hopefully y'all enjoyed!
Also, I'll probably slow down or stop uploading here outright simply because this site and this site alone is actually garbage and isn't being properly managed anymore.
Up next: More video making which leads to burnout, so Yesss decides to send pop-ups out to milk what was made. But when Vanellope joins the pop-ups, she comes across a website that breaks her mind…
