Chapter 4
hey guys! so... its been about a year? tbf, my brother sent me the chapter months ago, but I kept forgetting to edit it... oops? anyway chapter 4 ftw! do we want chapter 5 to be about Lily again or back to our favorite boys? hmmm...
Lily climbed the steps at an even, steady pace, her heart pounding with each step. The cold stone beneath her feet sent shivers up her spine, and the dim light of the torches lining the walls cast long shadows that stretched endlessly. She knew that if she lost her temper, Dumbledore's endless patience and calmness would only serve to infuriate her further. As she reached the top, she paused, taking a deep breath to steady herself. The heavy wooden door loomed ahead, and she reached out with an unsteady hand to knock, feeling the cool brass of the knocker against her skin.
"Come in," came the immediate, serene reply, the familiar voice echoing slightly in the hallway.
Taking another breath, she pushed the door open and stepped inside. The room was bathed in the soft glow of candlelight, casting flickering shadows on the walls lined with ancient, leather-bound books. Behind a massive oak desk, Dumbledore looked up, his eyes twinkling behind his half-moon glasses.
"Ah, Lily," he greeted her cheerfully, a warm smile spreading across his face. He gestured to a chair opposite him. "Please, have a seat."
All thoughts of remaining calm vanished at the sight of his smile. "What were you thinking?" she demanded, ignoring his invitation and striding across the room until she stood directly in front of his desk. Her hands gripped the edge of the desk, knuckles white. "Choosing a few inexperienced boys, completely new to the Order, to carry out such a vague mission with no idea of the consequences for them or any of us!"
Dumbledore sighed, his expression turning somber as he leaned back in his chair. "The job may have been less than ideal, but after serious consideration—"
"Serious consideration!" Lily interrupted, her voice rising. Days of suppressed emotions spilled over, her frustration boiling to the surface. "The Order is desperate, scrambling to do anything to strike a blow against You-Know-Who's growing empire. We're stretched too thin to even think about sending four people away on some wild goose chase, clinging to the hope that some 'prophecy' based on a fabled story is actually true!"
She took a deep breath, her face flushed with anger. "And not only that," she continued, "but they were sent into the heart of the Ministry, one of the most protected places in all of Britain, to find an ancient artifact in the Department of Mysteries. If it actually exists, it will most likely lead them to their deaths, even if they somehow manage to avoid detection by the hundreds they'll have to get past!"
Dumbledore leaned back further in his chair, a thoughtful look on his face. "Lily," he began tentatively, "are you sure this may have more to do with who went on the mission as opposed to the mission itself?"
Lily blushed, her anger momentarily overshadowed by embarrassment. She crossed her arms defensively. "How dar—"
The door burst open, and Frank Longbottom rushed in, panting heavily. His face was pale, and his eyes wide with urgency. "The veil," he cried, leaning against the wall to catch his breath. "It's gone!"
Dumbledore's expression remained calm, his trademark smile returning. "Yes, Frank," he said, his voice steady. "It disappeared after the boys went through."
Frank stood up straight, taking a deep breath before continuing. "It came back," he explained, glancing nervously between Lily, who was blushing yet livid, and Dumbledore, who looked completely at peace.
"Am I interrupting something?" Frank asked hesitantly, shifting uncomfortably on his feet.
"Not at all, Frank," Dumbledore replied, still smiling. "You wanted something?"
Frank took another deep breath, his eyes serious. "The veil returned," he repeated. "One of our insiders in the Ministry just reported it."
Lily's eyes widened with anxiety. Her heart skipped a beat. "Returned?" she echoed. "So it's back in the Ministry now?"
Frank shook his head before she finished the question. "You-Know-Who already sent corrupted Aurors and Death Eaters in after them."
"And the veil?" Lily asked tensely, her voice barely above a whisper.
"It's gone," Frank confirmed.
Lily turned back to Dumbledore, her eyes pleading. "Please," she begged, her voice cracking slightly. "Please tell me there's a way to warn them."
Dumbledore's face grew serious as he pondered her request. The silence stretched out as he thought, the only sound the crackling of the fire in the hearth. After a moment, he nodded. "Yes," he said slowly. "I believe there might be a way."
