"What's your name?" Rapunzel asked the little girl as they kept to alleyways and remote sidewalks.
"Ava," she said, smiling sweetly at them.
Flynn didn't buy it for a moment. There was something creepy about Ava but he just couldn't put his finger on it.
"So, Ava," he said, "do you have a fake face?"
She laughed in a way that made it clear she found Flynn's question ridiculous. "No, of course not. Kids can't get fake faces. Only adults can. Once everyone turns eighteen, it's mandatory they get a new face."
"Or they're thrown in prison," he clarified.
"That's right."
Flynn leaned in closer to Rapunzel. "How is any of this ok? How could one person get this many people to comply to changing their faces?"
"I guess that's what we'll find out," Rapunzel responded. "I need answers. I've been here for weeks with no results. Normally it shouldn't be this hard. It feels like someone is keeping just out of my reach for some reason."
He squeezed her hand.
They kept following Ava until she took them to a dingier part of town. The houses were small and run down. Everything was covered in trash. None of it felt high-tech or futuristic. It all just felt… sad.
Ava stopped in front of a small bungalow that was in need of some desperate repairs. "Here we are."
"The creator of this new world lives… here?" Flynn asked, placing his hands on his hips. "Somehow, I doubt that."
"Oh, no, she doesn't live here. This is where you get kidnapped." Ava said it so calmly, Flynn thought he misheard her.
"I beg your pardon?"
"Eugene!" Rapunzel screamed.
When he looked over, he saw two men dragging her towards the house.
"Let her go!" He tried running after her but he didn't get very far because someone came up behind him and smacked something hard against his head. He fell to the ground and blacked out.
When he woke up again, he was on a concrete floor. Judging by how high the windows were and how cold it was down here, he was inside a basement.
He groaned, sitting up.
"Good. You're awake," a man said.
Flynn jerked at the sound.
A young man, probably only in his twenties, was standing across from him wearing a black hoodie and a beanie. The first thing Flynn noticed about the guy was that he wasn't exactly the prettiest. He had a nose that was too large and crooked. Insanely bushy eyebrows. And he looked a little plump. Not overweight but not in shape either.
"I'm Liam," he said. "And you're Eugene Fitzherbert."
"How do you know my name?"
"I've seen your face on tons of digital posters all over the city. You have your real face. Well, so do I."
"Uh-uh." He glanced around. "Where's Rapunzel?"
"That bitch is tied up somewhere else."
"Don't call her that," he snapped, trying to stand up but stumbled from his head wound.
"Why not? She's part of those fake goons at Hollywood. Everyone knows they all have fake faces. When we saw the opportunity to take her, we did. She'll be valuable for us in our mission."
"What mission?"
Liam smiled a dangerous smile. "To blow up Hollywood."
Flynn could not believe his ears. How the hell did he get caught up in a terrorist organization? He only wanted answers. "Ok. Listen buddy, I don't know what you want from me or Rapunzel but just let us go. We'll be out of your hair. We won't stop you."
Liam grunted. "I doubt that." He paced around the room. "We need Rapunzel because she has inner workings of Hollywood. She can give us information on the best place to plant our bomb. And she'll be a great hostage in the meantime. As for you, we want you to join us. We're an organization full of people who despise the new fake face law. Having to remove your own face to get a new one that costs absurd amount of money only to be thrown in jail if you don't? It's barbaric."
Flynn blinked. "Wait. You want me to join you? Why?"
"Because you're a wanted man. The entirety of LA knows about you. The rest of us, we're all hidden in the shadows. We need a face to represent the movement."
"And why me?"
Liam shrugged. "You have a handsome face. It will get more people to listen to our cause."
Flynn wanted to die laughing if he wasn't so worried about finding Rapunzel. "So, let me get this straight. You want me to be the face of your terrorist group, fighting against fake pretty faces because I have a pretty face myself?"
"It will show other people that they don't need a fake face to be pretty. That the law is hurting more than helping. We need to rise above it."
"Oh, I agree. But what I don't agree with is blowing anyone up. That's just plain stupid. Now, where is Rapunzel?"
"That bitch can wait. We're talking."
Flynn finally got the burst of energy he needed. Jumping to his feet, he grabbed Liam by the jacket and shoved him against the wall. "Where is Rapunzel? Tell me now."
Liam gasped, his eyes widening. "Ok, ok. We'll go see her."
He let Liam go, who hurried up the basement stairs. Flynn followed. They entered into a living room. Pretty typical shitty looking place. Liam guided him down the hallway and into a bedroom. Rapunzel was there as well as another man. Her wrists were tied up to the bed posts.
"Eugene," she said.
He rushed to her side, ignoring the other person in the room. "Are you ok?"
She tried tugging on the ropes but to no avail. "I'm not hurt. They just tied me up and told me they needed information about Promagic Studios. They want to place a bomb there."
"So, I heard." He began untying her ropes.
"Hey," the other man said. "You can't do that."
"It's fine," Liam told him. "Eugene won't listen to us unless she's ok."
The moment Rapunzel was free, she threw her arms around him. Flynn held her so tight he could never imagine letting her go.
"Ok. Time for us to leave now," Flynn said.
Liam laughed – it was an ugly sound. "No. We need both of you."
"Rapunzel isn't a part of Hollywood. She doesn't have a fake face."
"Only people with fake faces can work in Hollywood," the other man said.
"I don't have a fake face," Rapunzel said. "It's real."
"There's only one way to know." Liam advanced on her and slapped her face. She gasped, clutching her cheek.
"Watch it," Flynn growled, angling his body protectively in front of her.
"You sound like you love this bitch. How? She's part of this entire fake industry."
"You wouldn't believe us if we told you," he said. "But Rapunzel wants to stop this fake face law just as much as the rest of us. But we're not going to blow up a city. We're just trying to find the person responsible for all of this. Who created the fake face law? Ava said it was some woman." He paused. "And if you call Rapunzel any other rude name, I will rip your nut-sack off. And I think you know I'm capable of it."
Liam swallowed hard. "We don't know who it is. We've never actually met the person. We just know the rumors. That it's a woman. She keeps herself hidden. No one has ever seen her. Not the general public anyway. But it's believed that she has left messages for us in movies and TV for the past century."
"How is that possible?" Flynn asked. "How can one person leave a message for a century?"
Rapunzel tensed beside him. "What's the message?"
"Um…" Liam scratched the back of his head.
"The message!"
He jumped. "Fine. God. The message is known to say: They're all fake. The entire thing is fake. So let's be fake for them."
Rapunzel let out a slow breath as her body hitched forward.
"Rapunzel?" Eugene asked, helping he stand back up straight. "What is it?"
"It just… reminded me of someone. Someone from my past. She said something similar to me once. But it couldn't be. She wouldn't…"
"Who?"
Rapunzel glanced at the men and back at him. "We need to get out of here."
He nodded right as that intense pain filled him again. He flickered in and out.
Liam and the other man exclaimed.
"Let us go," Rapunzel demanded. "He needs help and only I may have the solution to it."
Flynn slumped against the wall, catching his breath as his body returned to normal. "What the hell is happening to me?"
Rapunzel's look told him all he needed to know. He was in grave danger.
"You're not going anywhere," Liam said. "We need both of you to complete our mission."
"We're not helping you blow anything up," she said. "Now let us go."
"No."
She opened her mouth to argue right as a loud bang came from the living room. And then the sound of multiple footsteps and voices making their way through the house. Liam and the other man ran out to see what was going on and the only sound after that was the sound of gunshots.
Flynn and Rapunzel exchanged a worried look.
They peeked around the doorframe and saw a S.W.A.T team in the house.
"Kill anyone you see. These terrorists are going down," a man near the front of the group said. On the floor in the hallway were the bodies of Liam and his friend.
Ducking back into the room, Flynn quietly shut the door. "Ok. This is not good."
"You can say that again."
"Ok, this is not-,"
"Eugene," she snapped in a whisper. "We need to get out of here now."
They ran over to the one window in the room.
He could hear the S.W.A.T team getting closer, their heavy boots loud on the wood floor. He pushed and pulled on the window but it was stuck.
"I can't get this open," he said through gritted teeth. Rapunzel tried helping him but the damn thing wasn't budging. It reminded him too much of what he had to go through in Rapunzel's tower. They were on the verge of death there too.
Why did that keep happening to them? Flynn wondered. Death kept following them wherever they went.
Rapunzel grabbed a lamp off a nightstand. "Then we break it."
"That will bring all of those guys in here in a matter of seconds."
"It's our only chance. We can't hide here. They'll find us. The second I break this window, we climb through. It doesn't matter if we get hurt with broken glass. My tower can heal us."
"You better make this quick, Blondie." He winced as Rapunzel smashed the lap through the window. It broke, shattering glass everywhere. He helped Rapunzel get up and over it. Shouts and footsteps were heading their way.
Flynn jumped through the window right as a man with a huge freaking machine rifle burst into the room. He started spraying bullets. Flynn landed on the ground with a grunt. If he had been just a couple seconds slower, he would have been killed.
Rapunzel helped him up and they began running down the sidewalk. But since they were spotted, they had an entire S.W.A.T team on their asses.
"Follow them!" a man shouted.
Flynn knew they couldn't stay on the open sidewalk. "Here," he said, drawing them towards one of the run-down houses. A gate was on the side of the house, leading to the backyard. "We have to try and hide and make our escape."
After climbing over, they landed in some random person's backyard. This random person loved gnomes judging by how many of them there were. Some were standing upright. Others were lounging on the ground. Their creepy faces made the whole thing… well, creepier.
They stayed low and made their way through the backyard and over the fence to the next person's backyard. And on and on they went.
The S.W.A.T team was loud, going house to house asking if anyone had seen people fleeing. They were getting closer.
Rapunzel and Flynn landed in another backyard, this one full of unkempt grass. They were so close to escaping when one of the officers appeared on the other side of the yard. Everyone stopped short.
Then the officer lifted his gun and pointed it at them. "Stop. Or you will be killed."
Flynn held his hands up. "Would you believe it that this isn't the first time I've been held at gunpoint?"
"Eugene, now is not the time," Rapunzel snapped.
"I know. I just make jokes when I get nervous."
The officer squinted at Rapunzel. "Are you… Rapunzel, the actress?"
"I am," she said. "And I am asking you to please lower your gun. There's been a misunderstanding. I can explain."
"Fine," the officer said. "Explain. But I am not lowering my gun."
"We" – she pointed at both herself and Flynn – "were kidnapped by those terrorists. We were trying to escape when you showed up. We got scared. We ran. But we had nothing to do with those people."
"Ok. I believe you. But he is a wanted man for going against the pretty face law." The officer leveled his gun at Flynn. "I'm going to have to take him in."
"Wait," Rapunzel said. "Before you do, can you answer me a question?"
The officer looked between them. He was fidgeting and a man with a gun fidgeting was never a good thing. "What question?"
"Do you know who created the pretty face law?"
"No," the officer scoffed. "It was just done by the government. Now, be quiet. I'm taking both of you in for questioning." He lowered his gun and approached them.
Flynn used that time to attack.
He shoved the officer to the side and grabbed his gun, turning it on him. The officer stumbled back, wide eyed.
"Please don't kill me," he said,
"Funny," Flynn replied. "You say that now that you're on the wrong side of the gun."
Rapunzel placed her hand on his arm. "Eugene, let's just get out of here."
Flynn sighed and lowered the gun. "Fine."
"Wait," the officer said. "I do know who created the pretty face law. It's just a rumor but it's been going around for a while now. A woman created it but no one knows who. Just that she came out of nowhere one day and decided to rule America."
"She's not the president?" Rapunzel asked.
"No. No one knows who she is. Just that she believes in everyone being their best selves."
"Not their fake selves?"
The officer frowned. "Why is it fake? Our new faces shows us who we really are."
Rapunzel gasped, looking like she got kicked in the stomach.
"Blondie?" Flynn asked.
"Let's get out of here," she whispered. "He's trying to stall us long enough for his other men to come. We need to leave."
Flynn nodded and together, they ran out of the backyard and back onto the street, far enough away that they weren't at risk of being caught.
He shoved the gun down a drain pipe. No one needed to find it and Flynn didn't want to be caught walking around LA with a machine gun.
"Rapunzel, that's the second time within a matter of minutes that you've looked spooked when this woman is brought up. What gives? Do you know her?"
"I'm not sure. Let's just get to my tower so we can talk about it without anyone else trying to hurt us."
"Where is it?"
"All the way up there." She pointed up towards Griffith Observatory. Just beyond it, Flynn could see the tip of Rapunzel's tower.
He sighed. "You sure don't make it easy, do you?"
Actually, it wasn't that hard to get up there. Rapunzel had money on her, so they were able to take a car into the hills where her tower was located.
Once inside her tower, she hurried over to the bookshelf and grabbed a book she tried not to think about.
"What is that?" Eugene asked, peering down at the book in her hands.
"Like a yearbook but it's not for a school. It's for the Academy. We all had our pictures taken." She flipped through it, searching for a face that haunted her dreams. "Here. This" – she pointed at one picture – "is why I reacted the way I did."
She showed it to Eugene. He frowned. "It's just some woman."
"Not just any woman. My best friend at the Academy. Cassandra."
Eugene jerked back like he knew the name. "You mentioned Cassandra to me but you never told me the story. You said I'd find out when it came time."
She sighed. "I guess now it's time."
Staring at the picture of Cassandra, Rapunzel was taken in by her black, slightly curly hair. Her green eyes. What used to be a kind face.
"Cass was the first person who treated me like a normal person when I was first came to the Academy. The teachers there told the other students about where I came from. How I was kidnapped as a baby. They were all fascinated of course but Cass acted like it was no big deal. And I appreciated that. It meant a lot to me. We became fast friends.
"Cass," she continued, "helped me learn how to function outside my tower. When the Time Traveler's Society found me, I was wandering around, alone, with no clue what to do."
"You never told me how they found you to begin with. A group of time traveler's just taking in strays?"
"It's what they do. They take in people who are alone and teach them how to fight for others. Teach them how to help others through time travel. I did ask them how they found me but they told me they just did. That because of time travel they knew who I was, so they brought me in."
"Not vague at all."
She smiled. "I didn't know if I should trust them or not. But… then they told me that they knew who my real parents are."
Eugene's eyes widened. "Rapunzel, that's…" He shook his head. "Why aren't you with your parents now if they knew who they were?"
The smile on her face dimmed. "They said that they had met my parents before but that they didn't currently know where they were at. That's why I haven't met them yet. No one knows where they are. If they're even… alive."
"You know, this Time Traveler's Society sounds a little suspicious to me."
"Don't be. They taught me how to fight. How to defend myself. They gave me this time machine." She spread her arms out to encompass her tower. "They introduced me to Cass."
"Who's 'they' exactly?"
"They're a collective. It's a group of them. The Time Traveler's Society exists outside of Time."
Eugene sighed, leaning against the desk. "Of course it is."
"Don't ask me how they do it. Even I'm not quite sure. They taught me everything I know about time travel. About helping people. That's they're mission. To help."
"But?"
"How did you know there was a 'but?'"
"There's always a 'but,' Blondie."
She leaned against the desk next to him. "But Cass didn't think they were so helpful. She told me she had discovered something – something they lied about."
"What was it?"
Taking in a haggard breath, she told him. "That she found out who her real mother was. The Society never told her. In fact, they deliberately told her the opposite. Cass told me that her real mother was… Gothel."
Eugene practically fell over. "What?"
She nodded. "Cass found out in the Society's files. They knew the truth about her. She was so angry. She… partly blamed it on me. Cass thought I knew all along about Gothel being her real mother. I mean, I was raised by Gothel for eighteen years. I had to have known, right? But I didn't. Gothel never mentioned she had a real daughter. I didn't know. I tried telling Cass that the Society had lied to me to. They knew this information and they kept it from both of us but Cass didn't want to hear it. She thought I was in on the secret.
"So," she continued, "she left the Academy. She took her time machine without the Society's permission and left. But the last thing she said to me was the Society was fake. That they were all fake. All lies. And they needed to pay for it. They needed to learn what it was like to face the consequences of their actions. She said she needed to show the Society what their true face looked like. I never got to ask her what she meant by that because she left. And I haven't seen her since."
Eugene was quiet for a moment while he rubbed his chin. "Ok. So, Cass said that they were fake. But that could mean tons of different things. Doesn't mean she's the one who caused the pretty face law to happen."
"Maybe not. But it's pretty damning. I said before that someone somehow changed 2094 when they weren't supposed to. You told me that we messed with Time. It would take a time traveler to sneak in between the cracks and change something that was supposed to be set in stone. Cass is a time traveler."
"Fair point. But why make everyone take on a new face or risk the chance of jail?"
"I'm not sure," she said. "Maybe she wants to show the Society the power she has? That they'll regret every lying to her? I don't know exactly. I don't even know if it is Cass. It could all just be a coincidence. But there's one thing I know for sure – we need to find whoever created those messages. Who put the idea in people's heads to create the pretty face law."
"Ok. Where do we start looking?"
Before she could respond, Eugene groaned and doubled forward, his body flickering in and out again.
"Eugene!" She set the yearbook down and grabbed his arms. As he flickered, he became immaterial. As in one second he was solid, flesh and bone and the next second, he was nothing, like air.
He sucked in a breath, straightening back up, looking completely solid again. "Why the hell does this keep happening?"
"I need to fix you. When you messed with Time, it caused this. You're dying."
"How do we fix it?"
She hesitated.
"What? Blondie, spit it out."
"It's not an easy solution. My tower can fix you but to do it, my tower would have to draw everything out of you. It could… potentially kill you. But it's the only way to save you."
"And if I don't try to change anything? If I just let this happen?" He motioned at himself.
"You'll die for sure."
"Well, that's just great."
"Eugene," she said, taking his hand. Her skin felt like it zinged at their touch. She kept wondering what it would have been like if she had let him kiss her. She worried she lost her chance. "We can do this now. It could save you. But it will more than likely boot you to a different time. If my tower is still trying to fix Time, then that's a real possibility. You could also die."
"How long do I have if I don't do anything?"
"Hard to say. Couple of days at most."
He took in a ragged breath. "Ok. We don't need to do anything right now."
"Eugene-,"
"No," he cut her off. "We need to finish the mission here. We need to reset everything. If the reason Cass or whoever was able to change things in 2094, then it's up to us to correct it. Even if it means I die, I need to do this."
"You would sacrifice yourself to save this entire city?"
He wrapped his hand around hers. "I would sacrifice myself to save you. No questions asked. I know I probably freaked you out before when I said I love you but I love you, Rapunzel. I'd do anything to make sure you're all right. And I know you wont be all right until this mission is complete. I can't risk dying right now or ending up in a different time without you. Not when you need me."
Her eyes were misting with tears. No one had ever made her feel this way before. She thought she had a friend in Cass but Cass hurt her. Cass left her. Cass blamed her for something that wasn't her fault.
But Eugene had been steadfast since she met him. The complete love and devotion in his eyes stole her breath away. It made her heart skip a beat. Any other cliché she could think of – that's what Eugene made her feel.
She didn't love him. Not yet anyway. She was still getting to know him. But looking into his eyes, she could see herself falling completely and utterly in love with him. It was both terrifying and exciting at the same time.
Rapunzel had been on her own for so long. Gothel wasn't much of a companion or friend or mother. She had Pascal until Gothel killed him. Cass showed that she wasn't much of a friend. The Society was just a mentor and a teacher for her. There wasn't exactly love and compassion there. With Eugene though, she felt safe for the first time…ever.
For the first time, she knew she wasn't alone.
She wanted to kiss him.
Shutting her eyes, she lifted her chin and parted her lips. Even though she couldn't see him, she could feel Eugene getting closer to her. Leaning in to kiss her.
But right before he could, she had an idea.
She gasped and backed away from him, turning towards her computer. Eugene blinked his eyes open in confusion.
"Uh, Blondie?"
"I realized how I can check if it's Cass or not."
"Not exactly the most romantic thing a guy wants to hear after getting rejected for a kiss."
"I did want to kiss you," she admitted, blushing slightly. "I just had an idea and it can't wait."
"Understood." He stood beside her, looking at her computer. She tried not to be distracted by how close he was to her. "So, what's the plan?"
"We have the ability to see if any other time machines are around in the area but to do so, you need to know the time machine's number. Each time machine has a specialty number assigned to it. I know Cassandra's." Her fingers were flying over the keyboard as she typed. "I never thought to plug it before but hearing those messages today made me think it was Cass."
"You didn't hear anything in the weeks you were posing as an actress?"
"No, unfortunately. Everyone was so busy with making a movie. I thought it was a good idea at the time. Now I see how much time I wasted."
"Hey," he said, placing his hand on her arm. "You couldn't have known. You just saw it was something to do with Hollywood."
Gosh, he was so sweet. Rapunzel gave him a smile before looking back at her computer.
"If Cass's time machine is nearby, then she has to be the one doing this. It's the only explanation." She pushed the last button and her computer showed the results.
A time machine matching Cass's numbers was in Los Angeles.
Specifically in Hollywood.
Rapunzel gasped. "I think my tower must have known. I think that's why my tower led me to Hollywood. That's where Cass is."
"Holy shit," Eugene breathed out. "So, she's the one doing this. I never thought I'd meet another time traveler let alone two."
"There's a lot of us. The Society is filled with lots of students. Look." She pointed at the dot on her computer. "Cass is there. If we can find her, hopefully we can fix everything."
"Isn't she mad at you, though?"
She sighed. "She is. So, let's hope we can talk to her long enough to fix the problem she created. Making people wear fake faces is horrible. She's using innocent people to send a message to the Society. It's not right."
"Let's go find her then. Where is she specifically?"
"It looks like a Hollywood mansion. Maybe it's her home here. She'll never let me in. I know she won't want to see me."
"Blondie," he said, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and drawing her close. Rapunzel told herself to focus on the problem at hand and not Eugene's body so close to hers. "You're forgetting one thing about me. I'm an expert at breaking into places."
"Wait. You're a thief?" Rapunzel asked.
"Was," Flynn reminded her. "Key word being 'was.' I don't do that anymore." He paused. "Not since I've met you," he added.
It was hard to see in the dark but it looked like Rapunzel's cheeks turned red.
They were driving to Cass's house (or wherever she was staying). The closer they got, the larger the homes became. It was obvious they had entered an incredibly wealthy part of the city.
"You know," he said, staring out the window, "I would have loved to live in a house like any of these when I was a kid."
"Me too."
That was something they had in common – the desire to be loved by your own parents in a house made of warmth. Neither of them got that.
But they had each other now. Though for Flynn, he knew his time with Rapunzel was nearing it's end. This Rapunzel had never kissed him, which meant that when they did, it would be her first kiss with him and his last with her.
He would make sure to cherish it with everything he had.
Rapunzel stopped in the street when they reached the house. It was freaking huge. Like mind-boggling huge. A large cluster of cars were parked outside and along the street. Tons of people were walking inside, all decked out in their evening best.
"It's a good thing we dressed up," he said.
She smiled. "Good thing."
He was in a simple navy suit while Rapunzel had on a sparking full length light pink dress that hugged her body spectacularly. She looked like the picture of elegance in it. She looked like a movie star.
Rapunzel parked down the street and they got out and walked to the house. A lot of people gave Rapunzel smiles and nods as if they knew her (which they probably did since she pretended to be a famous actress for a couple of weeks.)
The guard out front let them walk right on in.
"Perks of dating a celebrity," he said, gently nudging her.
She laughed and slide her arm through his. "Fake celebrity." Then she frowned. "Maybe Cass was right. Everything is fake."
"You are not fake, Rapunzel. You just pretended to be something to get information to save people. That's not being fake. Hell, that's called being a spy."
She gave him an appreciative smile.
The inside of the house was the epitome of luxury. Marble floors. Floral wallpaper that somehow didn't look tacky. Furniture that Flynn just knew had to cost a pretty penny. He felt like he was in another world.
And in a way, he was.
People were mingling about. They walked past a lot of them in the search for Cassandra.
"Rapunzel, darling," a woman called out, approaching them. Her face was bloated and her blonde hair looked more like a wig. Definitely not Cassandra. "I heard you walked off the set today. What a shame. We don't like a diva in this city."
"Dottie, hi. It was an emergency. I had to leave."
"Understandable." Dottie didn't look like she believed Rapunzel one bit. Her eyes slid over to Flynn. "And who is this handsome man?"
"Uh…" Rapunzel trailed off.
"Her boyfriend," Flynn said.
Rapunzel gave him a curious look. He shrugged. If he wasn't her boyfriend by now, what was he?
"Oh, darlin, he is so cute! But then again, aren't we all?" Dottie's face wasn't the only fake thing about her. Her laugh could make anyone's ears bleed. "Anyway, I'm glad you could make it tonight. It was a last minute party. And I never miss a party."
"Dottie worked on Romeo and Juliet with me," she explained to Flynn. Turning back to Dottie, she asked, "Do you know who owns this place?"
"Oh, that would be that woman over there." She pointed across the room. "She's a mystery, even to me. And you know I'm good at getting people's secrets." Cue fake laugh again.
Rapunzel tensed when she looked in the direction Dottie pointed. Flynn looked too.
Short black hair. Green eyes. Pale white skin.
It looked like Cassandra from the picture he had seen. And judging by Rapunzel's reaction, it was definitely Cassandra.
"Dottie, I got to go," Rapunzel breathed out, already making her way in the direction of Cass. Flynn offered Dottie a quick smile before hurrying after Rapunzel.
Cassandra had her back turned to them when Rapunzel tapped her on the shoulder. When Cassandra turned around, her eyes widened for a moment when she saw Rapunzel. Then they narrowed and an angry, yet smug look crossed her face. Flynn shuddered. It reminded him of Gothel.
Then Cassandra spoke.
"I was wondering when you'd find me. I've been waiting for you, Rapunzel."
Until Saturday!
