Chapter 15—Crashing
Jax Putney, since the age of 18, after his first killing, he never let anyone own him. He owned them. He didn't care what their title was. He had the power, he had the money, and that's what mattered.
Before her death, him and Jules were an unstoppable team. She would have raised Chip to be better, not to have fallen for that redhead like he did, but that doesn't matter now, what matters now is keeping his empire stable, getting Chip exonerated, and dealing with the problems at hand.
There used to be one problem, Olivia Pope. He was dealing with that, but since the little lady went and had a kid, she seemed to be on more of a mission.
One would think having a child would put you out of the spotlight, but not Olivia, no she was just too damn stubborn. She called his bluff at the courthouse, that wasn't happening anymore. Jax was determined to get a picture of that kid, he needed some leverage.
Now aside from Olivia Pope, he has the Governor of California. Little Fitz growing up to think he could take on Jax Putney. Well, Fitz is in for a rude awakening. He messed with the wrong person. No one, no one leaves Jax Putney's son bloody and threatened.
This was going to be a battle, but Fitz is still young, just getting his boots wet. He's going to have some problems in this state, unless his daddy can convince him to back down and be owned like all the other politicians on Jax's payroll.
Lewis James was dead, that was a major blow to Jax. Lewis led his heroin drug and gang ring in San Diego. Jax would have to leave it in the hands now to Sly. Sly was Lewis's second hand man, but he made way too many mistakes, and mistakes is just what Jax didn't need, not with Fitz breathing down his neck now.
There was a shipment, ready to be sold, and Jax wanted to be there in the shadows tonight, but he couldn't. He was too busy meeting with Chip and Leslie to get his extradition pushed further back. This was a 5 million dollar deal, and much more millions in drugs in the warehouse, Sly couldn't fuck this up.
Just before entering the meeting with Chip, Jax got the call that the Syndicate, the rival drug gang, took out two of Jax's men on the streeet to get in on the deal. Their leader claimed the buyer contacted him and wanted to deal with him, not Sly. Jax was livid. This was going down tonight, and the last thing Jax needed was any problems.
"Don't worry, Boss, we have it under control. Nothing is going wrong tonight. The shipment is in the warehouse already. The buyer set the meeting place. I don't know what the Syndicate is telling you but fuck em. This is ours."
"Look, I have too much going on to be there, you better be able to handle this."
"I get it Boss, calm it down. Where is Lewis anyway? We are getting word he's dead, hearing your own son killed him. What the fuck is that about Boss? That's not good. Lewis was well respected here."
"Concentrate on the task on hand Sly, don't fuck with me, you'll be laying right next to Lewis if you do. I have two narcotics guys coming by. They are in uniform, but they are on my payroll, they'll know the code word."
"Ok, sounds good, Boss." Then there was silence. After about 30 seconds, Sly said, "Well, what's the code word."
"Dumb fuck." Jax whispered. "Warrant, that's the code word, warrant, can you handle that Sly."
"Yes, I can. I'll call you after it goes down tonight. Nice big payday coming out way, right boss. And if Lewis is dead, a bigger one for me."
Jax hung up the phone. He called his two agents. "Make sure you're there on time. Get into that warehouse and secure this deal. I can't have anything more go wrong this week."
"Copy that."
Liv may have thought Huck was engrossed in his video game when she was talking to him before she left for the beach house. It was a far cry from what he was actually doing. Huck had just hung the phone up after tapping into Jax's line. He knew everything that was going down tonight, and he and Luther were going to be ready. This was all part of Fitz's plan.
"Make sure you tell Liv about Chip," Fitz said over the phone to Huck before Liv walked in the room. "I want her distracted tonight, with me, no worries for her. I'm counting on you Huck; you think we can pull this off."
"Sir, I've been waiting for this ever since my best friend was beaten the first time. I'm ready for this."
"Good to know. It's time we start getting Liv her life back, so she can be a mother to Grant, a lawyer again, and free of fear from the Putney's. The task force uniforms are out in the back, in the tool shed. Use them."
"What about the two Jax has on his payroll?"
"Well, thanks to your phone call a minute ago, they are now being apprehended by their own colleagues. Little by little, Huck, one by one, they will all start falling down."
"Fitz, Liv is coming, gotta go." Huck turned and was fully engrossed in his video game. He was waiting for her to tell him she would be spending the night with Fitz at the beach house.
Huck could tell it was something Liv was looking forward to. She hadn't been looking forward to anything in the past year. When she left with Fitz, Huck breathed a sigh of relief. He hated lying to Liv, even if it was for her own good.
Fitz lifted his head off Liv's shoulder. She had interlocked her hands with his and they were resting on Liv's waist. They were both looking at the sun sinking into the Pacific Ocean. Fitz took a deep breath.
"Are you ok? Do you feel like talking about it?" Liv asked.
Fitz shrugged, "There isn't much to talk about, I cut ties with him. I don't want him to be a part of my life, to be a part of Grant's life. He did that to himself when he didn't tell me you were pregnant and then again when he used you as bait for the Putney's."
Liv turned to him now. Although he was trying to hide it, she could hear the hurt in her voice. She knew the feeling all too well of having an absent father. Despite what Big Gerry had done, Fitz spent the majority of his life looking up to this man as a role model.
Not knowing what to say in the moment, Liv just caressed his face. She could see the pain in his eyes, and it pained her, too. She brought her hand down his cheek and massaged her thumb across his chin, as his eyes closed in the comfort her touch was giving him.
She took him by the hand and led him inside to the bedroom. Liv could just feel he didn't have the strength to talk about it just yet, and she wasn't going to rush him. Once in the bedroom, the light dimmed, and the dusk of the ending day coming through the large window, they stood facing one another.
Liv slid his suit jacket off his shoulders and rested in on the bed behind them. Fitz turned and sat on the small, cushioned bench at the end of the bed. Liv stood looking down at him, and saw his eyes were tearing up.
She began to unbutton his shirt, slowly, from top to bottom, never letting her eyes leave his eyes. Once Liv reached the middle of his shirt, he stopped her. He gently grabbed her hands to stop the unbuttoning, and his hand reached behind her as he pulled her head down to his lips.
Fitz stood up as he was kissing her, his hands pushing on her back to bring her closer to him. They turned so they were now on the side of the bed, Liv's hands finding the back of his head, and rubbing his soft curls.
She felt his hands go up to her shoulders, and he slid her shirt off as her hands were now both grasping the side of his head, she felt her body going down towards the bed, and she used his head as leverage to lay down as he came down on top, still kissing her.
There were no words needed to be said. This was gentle, a comfort they could both use, but Fitz needed it more now, and Liv would be there for him. Her fingers now running through his head of hair, his shirt halfway open, he felt her skin, and with the tickle of his shirt, she ran her hands down his back, to get her hands up the shirt, never once letting their lips part.
Their lips had stayed connected, almost afraid if the kissing stopped so would everything else. She felt his body push her harder into the bed, and once his shirt came off, the skin to skin contact of each other's chests gave warmth to both their bodies.
With no condom, they just continued to kiss one another, feeling their bodies connect, and that was just the remedy for the hurt Fitz needed for now. The feel of her skin, the warmth of her neck as he kissed it, and the affection of her hands rubbing all over his body, had him melting into her.
"We don't need to make love, Livvie. You make me feel so good in so many other ways." He pulled her in for a hug.
She smiled into his shoulder, because he did the same for her. She began kissing him again, loving the feel of his soft lips and the rigor of his tongue on hers.
They finally stopped, breathing deeply, as she turned her body up against is. The back of her head resting on his chest as he sat up against the backboard of the bed. His one leg off the bed, and Liv in between. His arms wrapped around her, and he was kissing her temple from behind.
"The thing is," Fitz whispered looking up at the ceiling, "I think he felt something when Grant looked him right in the eyes. Grant was sleeping at first, then when my dad said his name, it's like he heard it, and looked directly in my father's eyes." Fitz brought his head back down and kissed the back of Liv's head gently.
"Grant's eyes are your eyes, and your eyes are your dad's eyes, I'm sure that did something to him, made him realize the mistake he made." Liv rubbed Fitz's hand.
"My father read a book to me shortly after we moved here, shortly after my mother died. It was a book about understanding death. I reminded him about that book because it taught me I was the one who would keep my mother's life alive by having my own child. I had him leave with that book and with the picture I had in my room of him holding me. I was about Grant's age, not much older."
Liv sat up now and turned to face him. She put some of her hair behind her ear. "You know, Fitz, I understood why your father had you so protected, but now losing you he must be feeling terrible."
"He knew what he was doing. He always kept things from me, he thought it would taint my image." Fitz shook his head. "It's not easy to forgive him keeping the knowledge of my child from me, lying to you that I was married, and then putting you and Grant in harm's way."
Liv just put her head down. She understood and she didn't blame him for cutting ties, down the road though, it may hurt Fitz. "I understand, I don't know what I would've done if you weren't there, at the hotel when you were." Liv took a deep breath.
"I had to be there earlier. I couldn't wait another minute not seeing you. You're all I thought about. You and Erin, and even Abby."
Liv smiled, looking down then back up. "I know this may sound a bit crazy, but I think Abby had something to do with me meeting you, getting us together, like she knew it was meant to be. The only reason I was drinking so much that night was because I was missing her like crazy." Liv laughed.
"I think at that time in my life, I had to find someone like you. I was ready to quit all together. I didn't want any of it. After being with you, you gave me a drive to go on, a reason to take over my life and that's just what I did." He looked up at her.
"I love you," he whispered, a deep whisper. He pulled her to him again kissing her. He stopped. "I thank God every day now for you and for Grant."
"Fitz." Liv whispered. 'I love you too and I am sorry I doubted myself so much during the pregnancy. I just couldn't bring myself to believe I made the right decision. Seems every decision after I beat Chip with that bat was the wrong one." She bit her bottom lip. "Now the people I love will be paying for it."
"And I keep telling you, give it patience, ok. Chip is being dealt with."
"Jax is not someone who could be dealt with Fitz, it's not that easy. I mean even your own father is friends with him. Sooner or later, he's going to find out our connection. Chip is just a pawn."
"I'll be ready, we'll be ready." Liv looked at him, his eyes moving to catch her eyes. "Liv, I want you to stay. I can't lose you again, I can't lose you and Grant. Please, stay." Fitz was being truthful, but he couldn't protect them in New York. There was just too much getting ready to go down, he needed her by him.
Liv just looked back at him. Her eyes now dancing with his. She didn't know what to say. She'd been running so long, and this place was serenity, but Fitz's job would have him Sacramento, all over the state at times. Her shoulders just slumped.
"You have no desire to live in the mansion?" She asked him.
He shook his head. "No, there's too much of my mom in there. That's where she died. I can't be there 24/7. Besides, I have a place not too far from there. We can…." He stopped. "Look, it's up to you, I get it, just know, I beat the shit out of Chip today, ok."
"You did what?" She crossed her eyebrows. "You're not making things better Fitz."
"I don't care, Livvie, I really don't. He lawyered up you know. Leslie Alum, some lawyer Jax has had forever." He stopped; he didn't want to talk about it now, anymore.
"You know what, let's go eat, ok. We'll talk about it over dinner." He put his dress shirt over her, loving how big it was on her.
She laughed. "Now do you get to put my shirt on?"
"I have clothes here." He grabbed a t-shirt from a drawer as they stood up. He grabbed her from behind. "So, what's for dinner down there. I see what's for dessert." He picked up a strawberry and fed it to Liv from behind.
"MMM" she said, chewing. "These are for later, Mister."
"So, when I uncover the dish downstairs, will I see a bagel?" He grabbed her hand walking downstairs.
"Chicken Bruschetta." Liv said with a smile. "I hear it's your favorite."
"It is my favorite, tell me MiMi made it."
"MiMi made it." They sat at the table as Fitz poured some wine. Liv cut a piece of chicken off hers and fed it to Fitz.
He closed his eyes, savoring the bite. "This is so good." He looked at her with smiling eyes, putting his pain in the back for now. "Want to go for a moonlight beach walk after dinner?"
"There's nothing I would want more." Liv said as Fitz held his fork up and fed her his piece of chicken.
Shortly after Liv left with Fitz to the beach house, Luther and Huck jumped in the car and headed towards San Diego. They were dressed in task force uniforms heading towards the drug warehouse.
As soon as Fitz learned of the fear Liv lived in during her pregnancy, and what it took to keep their baby safe, Fitz was going to watch Jax, and the Putney's take a long, slow demise. The start of it with Chip getting on to that boat was only the tip of the iceberg, Fitz had so much to come.
San Diego's drug and gang task force had been on the Putney's payroll and a money maker for them for years. There were plenty of good officers, but there were the select few that kept Jax in business in San Diego. This is where Jax got his start, and the loyalty to him ran deep, law enforcement or not.
Word on the street was, though, Chip was talking now to the DEA. There were fears in the drug cartel that Jax had controlled since he took it from Frisk. He moved gang members and drug dealers around the state from San Francisco to San Diego. Now the loyalty was being questioned if his son was being a rat and did indeed kill Lewis James.
Fitz chose San Diego for Huck and Luther because that's where Lewis held his power. He ran the operations in San Diego, and with him gone now, the drug deals would fall apart. Jax was sure to lose millions and Fitz was right there to cash in.
Before any knowledge of Lewis's death came over the gang wire, there was a deal going down, 5 million dollars in heroin to be sold from Jax's street gang. Huck stumbled across this while tapping Jax's phone lines and alerted Fitz.
The gang working for Jax Putney, the 16th Street gang, named for the street Lewis grew up on, were in bitter street wars with the Diego Syndicate. Having inside information the 16th Street scheduled a meeting with a buyer, the Syndicate killed two 16Th Street gang members to secure the deal would be theirs.
Thinking the ball was in their court now, and Jax satisfied he would be getting a hefty payday, the deal was set to take place. Now, with Lewis being gone, Jax had to secure the transfer without any suspicions, but that's where Huck put an end to that.
Having reached the task force, the good ones, Huck told them where the exchange was going to take place. The Governor wanted a name for himself, not only cracking down on domestic abuse, but cracking down on street gangs and drug deals, it's just too bad Jax is in the mix of all this, so he's going down also. Only Huck had the knowledge that both gangs would have members at the warehouse at the same time.
While Jax was in the meeting with Chip and the lawyer, no cell phones allowed, Huck had it all go down. He contacted the leader of the Syndicate, having told him it was his money if he wanted it, word on the street was the dead body on the boat belonged to Lewis James.
With this knowledge, the Syndicate took full retaliation. They raided the warehouse where the heroin was being stored, killed a few 16th Street members in the process, and waited for the buyer to arrive. With Lewis gone, the Syndicate would now own the streets of San Diego, and the 16th Street Gang would be sent packing. They were as good as done, as was Jax's money line to any future drug dealings in the San Diego drug market.
Ahead of the task force and DEA agents Fitz had set up to meet with Huck and Luther, they had their own agenda. For Jax to not make a comeback, the warehouse had to be destroyed, demolished. What's a few dead bodies among killer gang members and drug dealers?
"You sure you ready for this?" Luther looked at Huck.
Huck was in a trance. His eyes closed. "Oh, I've been ready for over a year. This is my first step to taking down Jax Putney. Hopefully the last step is me holding one of his fingers….." He opened his eyes and looked at Luther who had a weird look on his face.
Huck cleared his throat. "Yeah, I'm ready."
Huck approached the warehouse. With both gangs having members inside, he felt the need to scream the code word, even though Sly was no way ready for it. "WARRANT", Huck screamed, and guns were drawn, shots were fired, and the spark from the gun set off a chemical, soon the members were dead from their own gunshots, burning in the fire, while Huck jumped back in the car and sped away with Luther at the wheel.
"Thank God you were careful, man, if you get injured or killed, I don't know how Fitz gets past that. Liv can't lose you; you hear me."
Huck nodded his head. "She won't."
Liv could smell the ocean in the air. Living in the city, and being secluded for well over a year, it's a smell she was taking in. Her and Fitz were walking, the moon exceptionally bright this evening. She was pulling Fitz, her hand interlocked with his. Their feet skimming the water as the waves came onto shore.
"It's beautiful here Fitz. I can't wait to walk Grant by the ocean. Did you surf when you were younger?" Liv was kicking some of the water as she was walking.
"I did surf. I started around 10 years old, it was just a pastime though. I loved sitting and just watching the waves roll in, hear them beat on to shore. There's a peacefulness about that sound even though they call it crashing into shore." Fitz pointed. "We used to walk up and down the beach, my father and me. From this end to that end." Fitz stopped in thought.
"He taught me all about politics here, the good, the bad, the ugly. It's why I'm so confused. He wasn't this bad; he didn't need control. Anyway, go after the money source first, that's what he taught me. All the dirty politicians, the power-hungry rich men like Jax, destroy their income first, everything else will follow behind."
They stood now, looking at the waves. They were coming to shore, just enough to touch their feet.
"People like Jax, he loses money, he loses power. You've suffered enough Livvie, he's going down." Fitz pointed "Here, let's sit here and just listen to the waves."
"Are you sure that's far back enough", Liv wasn't sure. "We're going to get soaked if it's not."
"No, it's fine. Plenty far enough." Fitz lied, with a smirk. Liv couldn't' see the smirk, they sat down next to each other, knees up listening to the sea under the moonlight.
"About Chip." Fitz began. "I can't get the image of you being attacked by him out of my mind Liv. I look at your lip and it shouldn't have happened. Had my father told me about the pregnancy, it wouldn't have happened. It's not fair."
"Yes, Fitz, I get it, but I can't have you doing things to risk your career. You worked hard to become Governor. What happens if it gets out that you did something to Chip?"
"What did I do? He can't prove I suffocated him until he begged for air, and the handcuffs is what cut his lip, I had nothing to do with it." Fitz shrugged. "Besides, you're going to want to listen to the news tomorrow."
"Why, so I can hear more reasons for Jax Putney to go after you?"
"No, so you can hear about California coming the first state in the nation to give free breakfast and lunch to public school children throughout the state. No child should go to school hungry and stay hungry while they're there. They would never learn like that, so the bill was passed and the Majority Leaders in the state are announcing it tomorrow. I'm signing the bill when I go back to the office on Friday." He smiled.
"Fitz, that's amazing. Oh my God. Your mom, she would be so proud." She looked in front of her. "Fitz, the water, it just touched my feet, you sure we're…..
Fitz pulled her down, under him, and began kissing her. Liv heard the waves collide, and their bodies were covered from water rushing in underneath them. She couldn't even yell because the feel of his lips on hers were overpowering.
Their bodies soaked now with salt water, the wave rushing back to the ocean, Fitz put his face above hers. He held her body, soaking wet in his arms, as her head fell to his shoulders.
"You are so going to pay, Mister." She whacked his shoulder as he got up and ran farther back now from the waves. "Do you know how hard it's going to be to get this sand out of my hair, get back here." She began to chase after him and tackled him once she caught him.
This is how he wanted her, carefree, without worry. She deserved this. He laughed as she took him down and laid right on top of him. His face was glowing in the moonlight, and she just looked at him. "He's going to retaliate you know, he's not going to let it go, what you did to Chip." Liv took a deep breath.
Fitz saw the fear in her eyes. "Fitz, he's going to find out soon enough about Grant. Are you sure your father won't tell him?"
"My father won't tell him, I'm sure. Liv," Fitz took a deep breath, sitting up with her now. "My dad has a picture of Grant."
"WHAT? Fitz." Liv pulled away to get up.
"No, hear me out." Fitz tightened his grip around her. "It's the replica of the picture he has holding me. After I sent it, I questioned myself, but I truly believe in my heart it's going to pain him."
"I haven't even told Erin let alone shared a picture with her."
"That's why I went after Chip. This will all be over soon, Liv, then Erin can live out here…." He stopped, "if you want."
Her arms were around him now, sitting up in the sand, the sound of that ocean echoing in the background. Liv looked at him. She cupped his face with one hand. "I don't want to leave, Fitz, I really don't, but Abby."
"Abby will get her justice, Liv, I promise she will."
"I can't just leave the load on Quinn, besides, she's in danger in too."
"Davis said he was going to go back to watch Quinn."
Liv tilted her head, still cupping his face. "Ok, a month, I figure that's how long the extradition hearing and all the appeal and crying from the Putney's will take."
"Well, it's not a week, so I'll take it for now." He leaned in. He looked up at the night sky. "Look, a storm is brewing, we better get back."
Sirens were blaring, red and blue police lights were flashing, and the horns from dozens of fire trucks were coming in at top speed. Huck and Luther sat a few blocks away able to see the flames burst the building to shreds.
By the time the firefighters came, it took about 30 minutes to put the fire out. Dressed with special equipment, the warehouse was searched, and bodies were being carried out. They would later be identified as three members of the Syndicated gang and 5 members of the 16th Street gang, including Lewis's second in command, Sly.
All the heroin was destroyed and although Huck had known the gang agreed to a 5 million dollar pay day, the heroin destroyed in the warehouse far exceeded that amount. This would put a huge dent in Putney's pocket. The only regret Huck will have is he wouldn't be the one to tell Jax.
Aside from the deaths that occurred in the drug warehouse, the task force was able to round out a dozen 16th Street gang members. They were sitting in holding cells in the San Diego police station awaiting their attorney to arrive, Leslie Alum.
Around the same time Fitz told Liv a storm was brewing, Jax and Leslie were finally able to leave the holding cell. The first of many hearings on Chip's extradition would come a week from tomorrow. Jax was fuming that it couldn't be sooner, and Leslie was getting tired of calming him down.
"You have a new Governor, Mr. Putney, one that is heading straight to taking down drug dealers, gang members, and domestic abusers. If you think your son has any chance of staying in this state, you have to be out of your mind. It's only a matter of time before he goes back to New York. What the hell were you thinking letting him jump bail?"
"He has personal matters to take care of, and he was taking care of it. He was set up. He didn't kill Lewis, you know that."
"I may know that, but there is no way to prove it. Also, do you think your son has a chance to live in this state, in prison, knowing he took down one of the most notorious gang leaders and drug lords in San Diego? He's as good as dead."
Jax stopped still in his tracks and faced Leslie. He wasn't his son, he would never strike a woman, but she was coming close. "Well, then, you're getting paid enough to make sure he doesn't because if he winds up dead, you will be right behind him, before his body can get cold."
The officer emerged with their belongings. They turned on their phones at the same time, both phones buzzing for an endless minute. They exited the building to the car waiting for them. "Sir, have you been briefed on the fire?" His driver asked.
"What fire?"
"Your heroin lab, well one of them, in San Diego, gone. It was burnt to the ground. DEA agents, San Diego Task Force, Narcotics team, they're all on scene. Quite a pretty penny in loss and damages. Governor is being briefed as we speak."
Jax tossed his phone to the car floor. "That son of a bitch! Tell James to get a hold of Gerry fucking Grant. I want that no good piece of shit's father in my office tomorrow morning. BEFORE THE SUN FUCKING RISES, YOU HEAR ME?"
"Yes, sir." His driver began making some calls.
Before Leslie even began trying to get everything together, she turned to Jax. "I told you this Governor."
"SHUT THE FUCK UP!" Jax rested his hand under his chin and watched the streetlights race past him as the car sped away.
"How was that?" Fitz asked as he dried the last of Liv's curly hair.
"That was so refreshing, and the company was even better." She hugged him, wrapping the towel around him as they finished their shower. "I'll wait here while you get me a pair of your boxers and…" she looked at him. "Just a pair of your boxers. I want to feel you when I lay in your arms. "
As he left, Liv looked in the mirror. This had been an unbelievable night. Her time, her talks with Fitz, it was everything she needed. She took out a toothbrush, began brushing her teeth, looking at her reflection. "Still don't know how he's going to explain you and Grant," she whispered to herself.
She wasn't going to lie to herself, Fitz was playing a dangerous game. She studied Putney for a year and a half. She knew Putney more than she knew some of the classes she took in college. Jax owned drug labs, drug lords, law enforcement, politicians, the list goes on and on, Fitz wasn't thinking this though.
Her studying of the Putney empire began when she found out Abby had married Chip. That's when she began warning her about him, but Abby was too far gone by then. If there was one thing about Abby, she was smart, a brilliant person, and she let the likes of Chip get the best of her.
By the time Liv could figure it out, Abby knew the mistake she had made. Once Abby knew that Olivia understood the dangers the Putney family had, Abby wanted to protect her. That's why Abby fought so hard to just get Olivia out of the way.
Olivia wouldn't budge, though, she would never leave Abby like that. In sense, Abby was protecting Olivia when she was beaten the first time. Olivia now owed it to Abby to follow through. But Olivia had Grant now.
She dried her mouth, waiting for Fitz. Looking at her reflection again, she whispered, "was Grant your way of telling me to let it go?" She stared at herself. "Well, I'm not, Abby, I'm not letting it go. I can't."
Fitz's phone was buzzing on the nightstand. The mayor of San Diego needed him out there first thing in the morning. He went on to give the list of events that took place, all Fitz already knew because Huck had briefed him right before the mayor called.
"Sir, we have every reason to believe this was a direct hit on the 16th Street gang from the Syndicate. We are going to have some problems on our hands." Mayor Sandoval said.
"The task force is already on it. Utilize them tonight. I'll be there by noon tomorrow. For goodness sake Gabriel, relax a bit, this is a good thing, your crime statistics just went down by 40% with this tonight, I'm sure of it. Look on the bright side of things."
"Yes, Governor, I understand. You do know I will be hearing from Jax Putney soon as well."
"When that happens, you lead him directly to me, you hear."
"I hear." Gabriel set the phone down and looked up at the computer display. "Good enough boss?"
"For now." Jax Putney said. "Make sure you let me know when Fitz steps foot in San Diego."
"You got it." Sandoval said with a nod.
"Did you have a good night, Livvie?" Fitz was leaning on his hand, above Liv in bed, feeding her a strawberry.
She nodded, swallowed her bite, "it was wonderful Fitz, how about you, was it special for you? Still thinking about your father?" She held up a strawberry and he went in for a bite.
He kissed her, while he was chewing. "I'm thinking of you, now. Only you, and that gorgeous blue-eyed son of ours." He rubbed his forehead down on her chest.
"Yeah, he is gorgeous, isn't he?" Liv smiled. "I miss him."
"He's fine. I'm sure MiMi hasn't put him down for a second." Fitz smiled as he gobbled Liv into his arms, caressing her hair. "I loved spending tonight with you." He could feel her weight bearing down, her breathing growing shallow.
"Huck and Davis too, that little boy is spoiled beyond repair." She laughed quietly.
"What was your favorite part tonight, Livvie?" Fitz changed the subject knowing Huck wasn't there at all tonight.
"The beach." She whispered. "Promise I'll see you in a wet suit one day." Her eyes drifting to sleep.
"Whatever you want. Is that what you want?"
"Mm Hmm." She nodded and kissed his chest before her body went into full sleep mode.
Fitz just held on to her, rubbing her shoulder. Watching her sleep is something he could do for hours. Her beauty, trying to read her dreams, he just loved watching her in his arms.
He was sure she was in a sound sleep. He thought about their night tonight, how it made him forget the hurt of his father. It wasn't going to be easy, but knowing she was there would make it better.
He picked up the remote. He flicked on the television, not so much as a stir out of Liv. The top headline was glaring along the bottom. BREAKING NEWS: "San Diego drug warehouse fire contained, several gang members dead."
"The Governor could not be reached for comment tonight as a known heroin warehouse burst into flames today in downtown San Diego. The Governor has promised to take on drug dealers and put a stop to illegal drug use, that which is running rampant in San Diego.
It is being reported the drug dealers were moving the supply to a more secure location being aware of the Governor's takedown of drugs in this area. No doubt the fear of Governor Grant led to untimely deaths of those in that warehouse tonight.
In over a month in office, Governor Grant is surely becoming a force you don't want to mess with here in California. Back to you Stuart."
Fitz clicked off the television. The light of the clock staring at him. 12 midnight. The start of a brand new day, and Fitz couldn't wait to see what Jax had in store for him next, beginning with the trap that corrupt Mayor Sandoval thinks he's walking in to tomorrow. He rested his head on Liv's, holding his love close to his heart as he drifted off to sleep.
He didn't hear the phone buzzing on his nightstand, nor would he have cared had he seen the display. The light illuminated in the dark room, the word "Dad" coming up on the screen. It rang several times, Gerry trying to call his son at least five times before he gave up.
Gerry saw the same news report Fitz had watched. He was now back in his Sacramento office, hoping to at least see Fitz before heading back to DC in a month. After Fitz didn't pick up his call, he looked at the picture of his grandson.
Once again, blinking away the tears, Gerry rubbed his finger over the screen. He knew his son was playing a dangerous game, one with the Putney's. Gerry didn't think he had a chance to even stop it, not after what Fitz told him what they did to Olivia. Fitz would stop at nothing now to get the revenge he wanted.
The only thing Gerry could do now is protect his son the best he could, and hope, for the sake of God, Jax and the Putney's never found out the true identity of Grant Thomas Pope.
As soon as Gerry was about to shut his phone off for the night, it began to buzz again. Hoping it was Fitz calling him back, he looked at the display. Gerry took a deep breath and closed his eyes. The display read Jax Putney. "Let the games begin." He whispered as he picked up the phone.
