"Is Logan doing any better?" Lorelai asked as she sat in her office, drinking coffee with her daughter.
"He's still asleep. I'm so sorry about coming a day early. It took me an hour to convince Logan that we should just come here, instead of jumping on a plane."
"He's back to the running away from his problems?"
"Mitchum and Shira called Ayribella illegitimate, and alluded to Logan having a secret child overseas."
"They what?!"
"It all started with Mitchum over hearing about Logan delivering a baby, and then telling him that he should be sued for malpractice."
"Are you serious?!"
"I wish I was kidding."
"Wow! Those Huntzbergers . . ."
"Logan wanted to jump on a plane to who knows where. I kept reminding him that we already made a commitment to be here this weekend, and that bailing on everyone wouldn't be right. This isn't his first choice destination, but he understands why we are here. He's just really grumpy."
"How late were you guys up last night?"
"We didn't get here until around 11:30, and we were up until 3."
"Rory, it's barely after 8am. How are you even awake right now?"
"Well, I have a baby now. If she's awake, I'm awake. And I figured that you would keep my coffee cup full all day."
"Rory . . ." Lorelai sighed. "Ok, here's what we are going to do . . . I don't do this often, but I am pulling the Mom card. Take off the baby carrier, and give Ayribella to me. You are going back upstairs, and going to sleep. When is the last time that she ate?"
"About 30 minutes ago. I'm fine, Mom. You are working."
"Rory, don't be ridiculous. You need to get some sleep. You can't take care of your baby, if you don't take care of yourself first. You've got to put on your own oxygen mask first, remember? Now give me my baby, and go get yourself a couple more hours of rest. I'll bring Ayribella up if she gets fussy."
"Mom, I'm fine. Really. I'll be ok. You have a lot to do today, getting ready for April's party."
"That isn't for you to worry about. You are going back upstairs to sleep, while I take care of my granddaughter. Now get up, and get that baby carrier off."
"Alright." Rory finally relented, standing from her chair, and removing her daughter from the carrier on her chest, and handing her over to Lorelai, who's arms were outstretched in front of her. Rory helped Lorelai get Ayribella all settled in place against her chest, then stepped back to pick up her coffee cup off her mother's desk.
"You know, these carriers are a lot more comfortable to wear, than they were back when you were a baby."
"I guess."
"It's so much easier to snuggle your baby, when she's strapped comfortably against your chest." Lorelai smiled, as she bent her head and placed a soft kiss to the top of Ayribella's tiny head.
"Just be extra careful if you have to bend over."
"Hey, none of that. I've successfully raised a child of my own before. I think I know how to take care of a baby."
"Funny!"
"Go back to bed. I've got this. Ayribella and I will be totally fine. You have absolutely nothing to worry about!"
"I know. I'm just . . ."
"You're exhausted, Rory. I've got this. I promise to bring her to you when she needs to eat again. We'll be fine. Go get some sleep."
"Thanks Mom." Rory said with a sigh, trying to stifle a yawn.
"You're welcome. I'll come wake you in a couple hours." Lorelai said as she motioned for her daughter to leave her office, so she could get back to work.
30 Minutes Later
Dragonfly Inn Kitchen
"Hey Sookie, where are we will the timeline for tomorrow?" Lorelai asked as she walked in the door to the kitchen of the Dragonfly Inn, to see her best friend chopping away at some vegetables.
"Everything is good to go. I am finishing up all the dessert prep this morning. Jackson will be by this afternoon with the fruit delivery for the platters that will go on the snack table at the party, and first thing tomorrow morning, we'll start the food preparations for tomorrow's dinner. I've got everything fully under control!" Sookie answered as she continued her work, never looking up from chopping.
"Did we figure out the staffing issue? Brian is out sick and Sheradin said she couldn't cover."
"Oh yeah, I figured all of that out. Diana is going to come in. She normally has weekends off, but she has offered to work tomorrow and take Wednesday off to make up for it."
"Oh, perfect! That works great! I wasn't too thrilled about the possibility of having to pay overtime, so I'm glad that you got that all worked out."
"Me too. I was starting to get a little worried about it, but, I knew that it would all work out in the end." Sookie told her, finally putting her knife down, and looking up see Lorelai heading toward the coffee pot. "Hey, what's that?"
"What's what?"
"What's that? Tied on your chest?"
"Oh, you mean this?" Lorelai asked, turning to face Sookie who had been looking at her questioningly.
"Oh my Gosh! Is that a baby?!"
"I don't know, is it a baby?"
"It's a baby! Lorelai, you've got a baby! Where did you get a baby from?!"
"Where do you think that I got a baby from?"
"I honestly have no idea! Did a guest come in that was overwhelmed and ask for your help?"
"What?! No, that's just weird!"
"Then where did you suddenly get a baby from?"
"Sookie, really? This is Rory's baby."
"Rory's baby? Rory is here?"
"She checked in last night."
"Rory is staying here?"
"Well, yeah. April is staying at the house, and Jess is staying in Luke's apartment this weekend, so Rory and Logan decided to stay here."
"And you are ok with that?"
"Well, yeah. I mean, of course I would rather have them at the house with me, but they didn't want to push anyone out, or make things extra crowded, so they just decided that it would be better if they stayed here instead. Plus, they think it will be easier on everyone, with Ayribella not crying and keeping anyone up at night."
"I'm sure no one would have minded a little bit of crying."
"No, of course we wouldn't. We all would have been perfectly fine with it, but this is what they wanted. And really, it's completely fine, because now I get access to this little angel all day, while I'm working. It actually works out perfect for me!"
"So, if you have the baby, where is Rory?"
"I sent Rory back to bed. They didn't get in until late last night, and they didn't get much sleep before Ayribella woke up this morning, so I took the baby, and sent Rory back to bed."
"Awww, that was awfully nice of you."
"I thought so. And it's not like she's a toddler, running around getting into everything. Ayribella still mostly sleeps all day, so I can just carry her around like this, and still get everything done that I need to."
"You aren't worried about what other guests might think?"
"Not at all! Ayribella is a tiny baby, and people love babies. Plus, after this morning, most of our guests will be family, and they will all be more than thrilled to see her."
"I guess you're right. Do I need to schedule time to snuggle her with Rory, or should I just fight you for that?"
"Hey, I just got my baby a half hour ago, and I haven't seen her in weeks. You need to give me some time to enjoy my Grandbaby for a while, before you try to steal her away."
"Fine, but I want to snuggle with her at some point today. I miss having a baby around. My kids have grown up way too fast."
"I know what you mean. But now I have this little one, and she is absolutely perfect!"
"Yeah she is. Look at that sweet little face!" Sookie smiled as she gazed at the baby sleeping soundly against Lorelai's chest.
"Hey Lorelai, there is a guest asking for you at the desk." Michel said as she stuck his head into the kitchen.
"Sure, tell them that I will be right there." Lorelai answered, turning toward the new voice.
"Wait! What is THAT!?"
"What is what?"
"What is THAT?! That there, right there on your chest?"
"Oh you mean this?" Lorelai asked, pointing to the sleeping baby.
"Is that a baby?!"
"What?! A baby?! Oh my gosh, you know what, it IS a baby!"
"Why on earth do you have a baby strapped to your chest?!"
"Because she's freaking adorable, and cuddly, and smells good! Why wouldn't I have a baby strapped to my chest?"
"Where in the world did you get a baby from?!"
"Oh, come on Michel. That's Rory's baby." Sookie spoke up.
"Rory is here?"
"Rory is in the bungalow, asleep." Lorelai told him.
"So you are babysitting while you are at work!?"
"No, don't be ridiculous. I'm not babysitting. You don't babysit your Grandchildren. You love your Grandchildren, and you make time to be with them, and enjoy them every second that you can."
"You are babysitting."
"I am NOT babysitting. I stole this one from her mother, and sent her back to bed, so I could spend time alone with my Grandbaby."
"But you are working. This is an Inn, Lorelai, not a daycare center."
"Good lord, Michel! She's a tiny, completely silent and absolutely adorable baby. It's not like she is throwing a fit, and screaming her brains out to annoy everyone."
"This is a place of business, Lorelai."
"Oh really?! I had no idea, I thought it was a public playground."
"Ugh, whatever!" Michele said in an annoyed voice, as he turned to leave.
"Leave it to Michele to hate on the baby." Sookie chuckled.
"He'll get over it. I only have so much time to love on my baby before the rest of the town figures out that she's here, and comes running over to steal her away."
"How long do you think we've got before Babette and Miss Patty find out that she's here?"
"I'm guessing only a couple of hours, if that. Luke isn't telling anyone that Rory is here yet. We agreed to give them time to sleep in the morning."
"Well, I want to get my snuggles in before everyone else finds out."
"Give me another hour, then I'll let you have a turn."
"Deal!" Sookie agreed.
"Ok, well I'm going to go head out to the desk to deal with whatever is going out there, and then I'll be heading back to my office to sort through the decorations for tomorrow."
"I'll come help you as soon as I'm done with the lunch prep."
"Sounds good. Thanks Sookie." Lorelai said as she poured herself another cup of coffee, before heading out of the kitchen.
* ~ * Later That Afternoon * ~ *
"Rory!" Babette's voice rang through the air as Rory and Logan strolled down the street, pushing their daughter in a stroller.
"We are never going to see our daughter again, are we?" Logan asked, seeing the blonde woman hurrying toward them.
"You knew the risks of coming to the Hollow with a baby." Rory chuckled. "Hey Babette! How are you? It's so nice to see you again."
"How are you doing, Honey? You look amazing!"
"Awww, thanks Babette. I am doing very well, how are you doing?"
"I am doing fantastic! How are you Hot Stuff? You adjusting to fatherhood alright?"
"I really am, thank you for asking." Logan smiled at the older woman.
"I've heard so much about your little girl. Lorelai has pictures of her all over her house. I am so excited to finally get to see her for myself!"
"My mom really has pictures all over her house?" Rory asked.
"Well, not all over, but she's got a bunch of them in her living room. She's a super proud new Grandma."
"Lorelai is the best." Logan agreed as Rory slowly pulled back the sunshade on the stroller to give Babette a peek inside.
"Oh, Honey! She is absolutely precious! Look at that angelic little face!" Babette said excitedly. "I am absolutely dying to hold her! Please tell me that you will let me snuggle your little angel while you guys are here. I can snuggle, her, can't I?"
"Of course you can, Babette. But maybe a little bit later? We are heading to Luke's to meet April for lunch."
"You know that you are going to be completely hounded there, don't you?"
"We figured that would happen." Logan told her.
"Well why don't I come with you, and I can hold your baby while you guys eat?"
"Babette, we couldn't possibly ask for you to do that."
"You didn't ask Shuga, I volunteered. Now come on, I'll walk with you."
"Is that Rory?" another voice called out as trio headed down the street."
"Rory?! Where's Rory?" a second voice piped up.
"You guys are going to be mighty popular around here this weekend." Babette laughed, seeing several people heading their way.
"Hi Mrs. Kim!" Rory greeted as they approached the corner where Doosey's market was located.
"Rory! You're home!" Mrs. Kim said, her voice brusk as she looked at the people in front of her as she exited the market.
"I'm home. How are you? It's great to see you."
"Is that your baby?"
"It is. Would you like to see her?"
"I would."
"Can we maybe come see you after lunch? We are heading to Luke's to meet April."
"Of course! You come after lunch. Make sure you eat something healthy. You are feeding an infant. No greasy foods. And no coffee!"
"Yes, of course Mrs. Kim. We will be by in a couple of hours, alright?"
"Yes, of course. I will see you then." Mrs. Kim said, then hurried away.
"Wow, Mrs. Kim hasn't changed at all." Logan said as they were approached by several other people outside the store.
"Rory! Look how amazing you look! If I didn't know better, I would never know that you just had a baby!" Ms. Patty said, reaching her arms out, to give Rory a hug.
"Hey Ms. Patty! How are you?"
"I am wonderful, Dear! How are you? Are you doing alright?"
"I am doing really well, thank you for asking."
"We are all so excited to finally see you back home! It's been such a long time. How are you Logan? How are you adjusting to Fatherhood?"
"I am adjusting very well. Fatherhood is wonderful. It's the best thing ever." Logan answered.
"How is your work going?"
"Work is going very well. It's busy as always."
"Everyone needs good doctor. Especially one as gorgeous as you are! You get more handsome every time we see you!"
"Well thank you. I appreciate your kind words."
"Rory, he's so modest." Patty chuckled. "You are such a lucky girl!"
"Yes, I really am. Logan is amazing. We are very blessed." Rory agreed.
"Is that Rory I see?" Taylor's voice boomed through the group.
"Mr. Doosey! It is great to see you again! How are you, Sir?" Logan asked, holding his hand out toward the newcomer.
"Doctor Gilmore. It's nice to see you again."
"Taylor, you know that Logan isn't a Gilmore." Rory chuckled as the men shook hands.
"He certainly is. You Gilmore women wouldn't dare ever change your names for any man."
"Maybe not my Mom, but I did change my name, Taylor. I'm a Huntzberger now."
"You hyphenated your name, as I heard it."
"Only professionally. But my legal name is Rory Gilmore."
"So you are Rory now? You formally dropped Lorelai?"
"No, of course I didn't drop Lorelai. I would never do that."
"I was going to say, because I heard that you followed tradition and named your daughter Lorelai as well."
"Yes, we did. Lorelai Ayribella."
"You know that your mother has yet to allow us to print her birth announcement in the local paper."
"Well that is because Logan and I haven't yet formally announced her birth."
"And why not?"
"Because we haven't felt the need to go public yet. Logan and I have been enjoying our privacy for the time being. We aren't planning to announce anything for a couple more weeks."
"Rory and I are trying to quietly adjust to being new parents. But I promise you Mr. Doosey, as soon as we decide to formally announce our daughter's birth, I will personally call you with all of the information you need to publish an announcement."
"Well I will be expecting your phone call. Make sure you give me a good picture to print."
"I'll tell you what, when we decide to publish our announcement, I will allow you first publishing rights. You can announce it in your local paper at the same time that we make the formal announcement, before the information goes out on the AP wire."
"I will hold you to that, young man." Taylor told him.
"I will make sure Logan calls you. We need to get going though, we are meeting my sister for lunch." Rory spoke up.
"Your sister?"
"Yes, my sister. You know, the girl who just graduated from MIT, who's graduation we are here to celebrate."
"So you are calling April your sister now?"
"Because she IS my sister. Our parents are married, that makes us sisters, Taylor."
"You have another sister too, don't you?"
"Yes Taylor, I have two sisters. I'm sorry, but we really need to get going. If you would all please excuse us, we have somewhere to be." Rory said as she looked to Logan as he stood behind the stroller.
"I heard that Jess is coming back this weekend as well. Is that true?" Taylor asked.
"I'm not sure. Maybe you should ask Luke or even Liz. They would know more about that than I would."
"You don't know if Jess is coming back?"
"Taylor, do I look like I keep Jess' schedule?" Rory asked, getting annoyed with the all the questions.
"I just thought that you might know which of your family members were coming to town this weekend."
"Nope, that's not my job. Sorry Taylor, but we really need to go. Excuse us."
"We'll see you all later on." Logan said politely, as Rory linked her arm through his and he began to push Ayribella's stroller forward, away from the gathered crowd.
