Chapter V

The Metal Clan.

Is there any place safe for the Avatar? First, President Raiko banished her from Republic City. Then the Earth Queen declared her an enemy of the kingdom after Korra rescued a group of airbenders from Ba Sing Se. And now Korra has learned that Zaheer and his fellow criminals are after her. With Tenzin busy bringing the new recruits to the northern air temple, Korra's protection now rests in Beifong's hands.

Morning Airship.

Naruto grumbled as he woke up before walking down the hall to the bedrooms. He opened the door to him and saw Korra on top of Asami making out, the sheet covering their nude bodies from the waist down. "OK, come on, we're about ready to land."

The two slowly stopped making out and stood from the bed, flashing Naruto their bodies before walking past him to the bathroom.

Smack!

And smacked their asses as they got past him.

Later, the group stood outside the ship in a field by a mountain area with Korra using airbending to throw a ball for Naga to fetch.

"While you're playing fetch, four of the most dangerous criminals in the world are hunting you down. We should get moving." Lin said arms crossed as Naga ran back, ball in her mouth

"Relax. We just got here. Besides, no one knows where I am right now except us." Korra looked back as Naga dropped the ball at Lin's feet. "I think she wants you to throw it for her."

"I'll pass. Thanks." Lin said before Naruto threw the ball with airbending.

"We just got a call on the radio about another airbender."

Naruto looked back to see Asami and Mako walking out of the ship. "Finally. Where are they?"

"A city called Zaofu, the home of the metal clan," Mako replied to Korra who turned to Lin at that.

"You know the place?"

"Uh, never been, but I don't want you going there." She replied crossing her arms and looked away for a moment. "I'd rest a lot easier if you were back safe in Republic City."

"Sorry, If there is an airbender in Zaofu. Then that's where we're going next." Korra said as Naruto threw the ball again for Naga to give chase.

Later, the group is flying over a city that is situated directly on a valley flanked by two rivers and surrounded by mountains. It consists of five different sectors, the city is connected by a series of metal rails on which a state-of-the-art monorail system operates. The architecture involves innovative design elements, particularly in that each portion of the settlement is surrounded by petal-like metal panels with exteriors made of platinum.

"Wow, wow, wow! An entire city made of metal, whoo!" Bolin exclaimed looking out at the city. "You should be right at home, Beifong."

They then landed where they saw two guards in platinum armor create a ramp for them to walk out. "Aren't you coming?" Korra asked Lin who was sitting on the couch.

"What's there to see?" She asked, crossing her arms. "It's metal. Big whoop. Just find the airbender, and let's get moving. And don't tell anyone I'm here." She finished pointing at Korra.

"Why not?"

"I don't need to explain myself to you. Just do what I say."

"Fine. You got it, chief cranky pants." Korra replied before they walked out and saw a man with tanned skin, balding, gray goatee, and dressed in green clothes with glasses. He also has gold piercings on his left ear with a chain connecting to his nose.

"Avatar Korra, it is an honor to meet you. My name is Aiwei." Aiwei greeted, with a bow.

"Thanks for having us." Korra nodded as Aiwei looked at them.

"Is this everyone?"

"Yep, just us. So can I meet the new airbender?"

"Of course. Right, this way." Aiwei took them to the elevator with two guards and went down to a train car.

Air Temple Island.

The kids were giving a tour to two people who came to the island after finding they were airbenders. "And this is the air acolyte dining hall, where everyone eats, and this is Daw," Ikki said as they walked into the dining room and up to the new airbender Korra helped on the bridge. "He's a new airbender too, like you guys."

Daw got up via airbending and looked at the two. "It's so nice to meet you. How exciting. New friends."

"Excuse me, hello?"

They turned to see a man in beige clothing with a hood on. "My name is Yorru. I heard this was the place to come if you're a new airbender." He said removing the hood and revealing Zaheer without his beard and a shaved head showing a cross-shaped scar on the left side of his head.

"You got that right, stranger," Meelo said to Zaheer, crossing his arms.

"Well, a couple of weeks ago, I woke up, and suddenly, I could do this."

He held his hand out and had a small tornado of wind form. "Mom, Aunt Kya, we got another one!"

The group rode the rail through the city and came up to a statue of a woman with her hair in a bun. "That statue honors the first metalbender, Toph Beifong, who expanded the possibilities of what benders were capable of," Aiwei explained as they passed it. "Here, everyone is encouraged to reach his or her highest potential."

"Does Toph live here?" Naruto asked, looking over before Bolin got in front of him.

"Are we gonna get to meet her?"

"I'm afraid not. She used to visit from time to time, but years ago, she left to wander the world in search of enlightenment. No one has seen her since." Aiwei explained as Bolin's shoulders slumped.

They then made it to the back city where a palace was situated. "Wow, is this where the airbender lives?" Korra asked Aiwei who nodded as they got off the train.

"Yes, but first, her mother wants to meet you."

They went inside the house and saw eight dancers rehearsing on a flattened metal lotus flower. They fire metal cables to the ceiling, and four of them swing upward before landing, while the four bottom dancers bend the petals for their teammates to land on. The dancers bounce from petal to petal, before jumping to the middle, where the flower closes. The dancers open the flower, where the inside dancers pose with graceful poise.

"Is this some kind of combat training?" Korra asked, looking at them.

"Not exactly. They are rehearsing for a dance premiere next month."

"That's it for today, everyone." The leader, a middle-aged woman with short graying hair, said to the others.

"Allow me to introduce the matriarch of the metal clan, Suyin."

"Please, call me Su." Suyin greeted the group with a bow as they followed. "Great to finally meet you, Avatar Korra. And this must be Mako, Bolin, Naruto and Asami."

"You've done your research," Naruto said as she looked at him

"I make it my business to know who's visiting my city. So… who's the second Avatar?" Naruto raised his hand at that as she looked at him. "It's an honor to meet you."

"So you're a dancer?" Asami asked as Suyin then brought her hand up and counted her fingers.

"Dancer, leader, wife, mother, collector of rare meteorites. You'll find people here have many skills and interests." Aiwei leans into Suyin's ear and whispers to her, causing her eyes to widen and she glances at him. After Aiwei moves away from Suyin, she turns and narrows her eyes with suspicion at the group unhappily. "Korra, why did you lie when Aiwei asked if there was anyone else with you?

"What? I-I didn't. I mean… How did you know I was lying?" Korra asked Aiwei who had his hands behind his back.

"I am a truth seer. When people lie, their heart rate and breathing increase. I can sense the most subtle of changes."

"Thanks to Aiwei, there are no secrets in our city," Suyin explained as Korra sighed.

"We came with Republic City's chief of police. She didn't want anyone to know she was here. I'm sorry I didn't tell you."

"Lin's here? Well, I would love to say hello." Suyin said, clapping her hands together.

"Wait, you two know each other?"

"You're joking, right? Oh, Lin never told you about me."

"No. Why would she?"

"I'm Lin's sister," Suyin explained to the shock of the others.

Later, Korra walked onto the ship and up to Lin. "I found out why you were so against coming here. Why didn't you ever tell me you had a sister?"

"Half-sister," Lin said from her spot as she turned to see Suyin with Korra.

"Same mom, different dads. So what? We're blood, Lin. And after 30 years, the least you could do is say hello." Suyin said to her sister who crossed her arms.

"I have nothing to say to you."

"You two haven't spoken in 30 years… How come?" Korra asked before Suyin sighed.

"Ask her. I've tried."

"Oh, don't put that on me. You're the one who tore our family apart."

"And you've done a bang-up job keeping it that way." Suyin bit back hands on her hips.

"You haven't changed one bit, have you?

"Look, we can stand here arguing about the past all day, but that's not the reason the Avatar came here. My daughter is thrilled to meet you."

"Lin, your niece is the new airbender. Isn't that amazing?" Korra asked Lin who looked away.

"Yeah. Terrific."

Later, they walked back to the palace where they saw two young men playing in a metal field with nets on each side and four metal posts in the middle of the field. "Those are my two youngest, Wei and Wing. They're playing a game called power disc. They invented it all on their own." Wing shoots the disc to Wei, who redirects it, ricocheting it between multiple columns. Wei fires the disc back, ricocheting against a column. Wing leaps to intercept the disc, but fails to catch it, which slams into a net. "Oh, nice power, Wei."

"Ha! Wing goes down."

"I'm so proud of those two," Suyin said as the group then goes to a gallery filled with metal sculptures, where a young male sculptor works on one with metalbending.] Huan, I'd like you to meet the Avatar and her friends. And your Aunt Lin. "Huan, I want you to meet the Avatar and her friends and your aunt Lin."

Huan has long black hair, the left side shaved and an eyebrow piercing.

"Nice to meet you." Korra waved as Huan waved, not looking back from the banana-shaped sculpture he was working on. "Hey."

"Wow, that's a really nice… Banana?" Bolin asked as he stared at it. "Yes, very, very lifelike."

"It's not a banana!" Hun bit back over his shoulder. "I was inspired by harmonic convergence. It represents the dawning of a new age, obviously." He explained, gesturing at it.

"Oh, yeah, no, I c... I can totally see that. I... Wait, let me stand here. Yes, I can see that now. Yes. Thank you." They then left as Bolin stumbled over his words before whispering to the others. "Banana. I mean, that's a banana, right?"

They then went to the other side where they saw a girl that's their age with short black hair in a bob reading.

"And this is my daughter Opal."

"Wow, Avatar Korra," Opal said, standing and walking up. "I can't believe you're really here. You are so amazing."

"It's great to meet you, Opal."

"Opal? That's a beautiful name."

Naruto blinked as Bolin walked up and saw both of them blush. "Thanks."

"I'm Bolin." Bolin introduced himself as they shook hands.

"Opal, but, uh, you already knew that."

"Great. We found the airbender. Let's take her back to the airship and get out of here." Lin spoke quickly before Su walked up.

"And the woman apparently trying to abduct you is your aunt Lin."

"Really? I've always wanted to meet you. My mom has told me so many stories about you."

"I'm sure she has," Lin said, crossing her arms as Su smiled.

"So I've set all of you up in the guesthouses while Korra trains Opal."

"Oh, I'm sorry, but I was hoping she could train with the rest of the airbenders at the northern temple."

"That sounds amazing."

"Nonsense." Su waved her daughter off at that. "This is where Opal's home and family are. You can train her here."

"I guess I could help her get started," Korra replied with a shrug.

"Absolutely not. We're leaving." Lin exclaimed before Korra looked over at Suyin.

"She's just a little worried because there are a bunch of crazy criminals after me."

"If you're concerned about security, don't be. This is the safest city in the world. Now, I'll see you all at dinner, and come hungry. My chef will blow the taste buds right out of your mouth." Suyin explained before leaving.

"Why do you have such a problem with your sister? She seems nice." Korra said, getting Lin to glare at her. "Come on, we can stay a little while."

Later that day, Korra started training Opal. "Okay, let's see what you got."

"I'm not very good."

"That's okay. I've never been a teacher before, so we're in the same boat." Korra explained bringing her arms up and walked around Opal. "You wanna keep your elbows in, torso straight, feet just skimming the ground. Why don't you try it with me?" Opal followed Korra exactly getting the Avatar to smile as wind formed around them. "Wow, you're a natural."

"You really think so? Thanks."

Air Temple Island.

"You call yourself an airbender? Disgraceful!"

Meelo yelled out at the new benders as they tried the ate exercise. "Be the leaf!"

"But I don't know what that means!" Daw said as he was hit out before Zaheer calmly walked past them, causing the duo to look up curiously.

He somersaults through the front panels and avoids every other gate. The rest of the group looks on in surprise as Kya walks up to them. Zaheer then nimbly avoids the gates, before somersaulting through the final gates, turns, and clasps his hands in respect. "Now that man's a leaf."

"The student is only as good as his master."

"Great news," Kya said as Zaheer walked up to the group. "I just got a message from Tenzin. He's with a whole group of other airbenders at the northern temple, and he wants all of you to join them. We leave first thing in the morning."

"And the Avatar is with them?" Zaheer asked, having Kya shake her head.

"No, apparently she had to split off from Tenzin."

"That's unfortunate. I was really looking forward to meeting her."

Zaofu.

"Tonight, for your dining pleasure, I present a seared wild Kyoshi elephant koi, paired with a ginger-infused pea tendril and hibiscus root salad."

The chef, a tall man with green tattoos on his arms said as he and others dropped a plate in front of everyone at the table.

"Stunning."

"Sorry, dear, I'm going to have to take dinner in my office." A man said from the door as another one walked with him. "I just had a major breakthrough on the tram station remodel.

"Well, don't let me stand in the way of inspiration." She said as the man walked away

"You're the best."

"That was my brilliant architect of a husband, Baatar, and our oldest son. He engineers all my husband's projects."

"Five kids. What a nightmare." Lin said from her spot on the left of Su.

"No, no, my children are a blessing."

"Yeah, mom used to say that too, but she never meant it."

"I have to admit, I was pretty skeptical when he said "pea tendril…" But this is delicious!" Bolin said to Opal who smiled.

"I know, right? I don't think I've ever had a bad meal in my life."

"Oh, I had plenty when Mako and I were living on the streets. I mean, you'd be surprised how bad food from a dumpster can be."

"I'm sorry. I didn't know." Opal said sadly, for reminding him.

"No, it's okay, it's okay. That's all in the past. Things are great now. I got to be a pro-bender, fought against a dangerous revolution, became a movie star, and now I'm helping the Avatar rebuild a whole nation."

"Wow, your life sounds so exciting."

"How's your search for the new airbenders going?" Suyi asked Korra who sighed.

"Honestly, not great. We had to rescue a whole group of them from the earth queen."

"Oh, she's horrible. She thinks she can just do whatever she wants."

"Sounds familiar," Lin muttered and got Su's attention.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"I mean, the idea of even having a queen is so outdated... Don't you agree, Korra?" Su asked Korra who looked down.

"I haven't really thought about it too much."

"Depends."

They turned to Naruto who spoke. "What about the kings and queens who are beloved by their citizens… I mean there are kings and queens who after hundreds of years go by, they are still lauded by the citizens who never met them."

"The world is evolving, and the earth queen can evolve with it or step aside."

"Hey, everyone, my little sister is an expert on world affairs now," Lin said, getting her sister's attention.

"You wanna talk about what's really bugging you? Because I'm right here."

"Sorry, we're late, everyone."

They turn to see Varrick walk in wearing green clothing with Zhu Li. "Varrick!"

"What are you doing here?" Asami asked as Varrick sat down.

"Great question, Asami. I mean, what are any of us doing here? Wow. Food for thought. Anyhoo, how's our company doing?"

"You mean my company? Future industries reverted back to me after you plotted to abduct the president."

"Allegedly plotted to abduct the president." Varrick corrected her. "Never convicted."

"Uh, that's because you escaped prison," Naruto explained as he saw the giant hole in his cell.

"No, the universe decided to set me free. So I looked up my old friend Suyin here, pitched her a few ideas, and bam! We're in business together."

"Varrick's heading up my new technology division," Su explained as Varrick smiled.

"I've seen the future, and the future is magnets! I'm working on a high-speed rail that'll revolutionize transportation and shipping as we know it. But that's not all! I'm-!"

"Alright, enough!" Lin stood up at that. "I'm trying to keep the Avatar safe, and you're harboring a criminal?"

"Ease up, Lin. Sure, Varrick's made a few mistakes in his past, but that doesn't mean he should pay for it for the rest of his life. My chef was a pirate, but now he's a culinary master. People change." Su said as Lin glared at her.

"You haven't." She left at that and slammed the door shut.

"Lin!"

As they prepare for the night, Mako tells Bolin about Opal's apparent affection toward him, prompting the earthbender to consider her as a love interest. In her office, Suyin tells Korra that she created the city as a way to make her mark on the world.

She reminisces about her past, saying that she and Lin competed for their mother's affection during their childhood, which strained their relationship. Although the two girls never knew their fathers and Toph gave the two all the freedom they wanted to discover their respective paths, Suyin reveals that she ultimately was disappointed by how her daughters chose to live their lives.

The matriarch recounts that she left to travel the world at the age of sixteen and that during her journey, she discovered that what she wanted was a family. She then purchased empty Earth Kingdom land, which she developed into Zaofu. Korra remarks that her life sounds perfect, but Suyin sadly remarks that, while she has always wanted Lin to be a part of it, she has given up any hope of reconciling with her.

In a courtyard, Bolin lamely attempts to flirt with Opal, who urges him not to try too hard and just be himself. As the two share a moment, Korra intervenes and asks Opal to talk to Lin, hoping that meeting her niece might calm her down.

Air Temple Island.

"Let go of your earthly tether. Enter the void. Empty and become wind."

In a room, Zaheer looked at a statue holding a necklace while reading the inscriptions.

"What are you doing?"

He turned to see Ikki walking in. "No one's allowed in daddy's study except daddy.

"I'm sorry. I couldn't sleep." Zaheer replied, turning to face her.

"What were you reading?"

"A poem by Guru Laghima, the wisest airbender who ever lived."

"Ikki, you should be in bed."

They turned to see Kya by the door. "Come on."

"Night."

"Good night." He said as Ikki left why Kya looked at him.

"You seem to know a lot about airbender history for someone who just got airbending."

"I've always admired the culture."

"And you moved through those gates like a natural. Where did you say you were from?" She asked as he looked at her.

"A small village up north. You've probably never heard of it."

She stared at him before her eyes widened. "Wait. Zaheer!"

Kya bends the water in the fountain and directs it at Zaheer, who blasts it off with airbending. Kya then bends the water around her and shoots ice projectiles at him. Zaheer takes a staff and smashes the ice projectiles, leaps out through the window, and opens the staff, preparing to escape. Kya leaps out with water tendrils on either arm. "I need some help!"

Kya catches Zaheer with her tendrils, leaping down before slamming him to the fountain. She prepares to freeze him, though Zaheer managed to dodge the attack in the nick of time, having only his leg frozen, which he easily broke through. Kya bends the water into a wave and rides toward him, directing all the water to Zaheer, but he shields himself with airbending and blows her off. Zaheer prepares to grab his staff but is blocked by a fire blast. "Hold it right there!"

The two sentries direct fire blasts at Zaheer, which he nimbly dodges. Zaheer pulls the staff with airbending, using the staff to block another blast before throwing a blast of air to slam the sentries against the roof of a pavilion. Kya, who has regained consciousness, bends the water to surround herself, before directing a strong blast toward Zaheer. Zaheer dodges the blast and sends a large air blast to Kya, slamming her against the wall, and knocking her out.

"Sorry I won't be joining you at the northern air temple. I'm afraid I have other plans." Zaheer said as he opened the staff and flew off.

Airship.

Lin without her armor stood in the ship before there was a knock at the door. "Who is it?"

"Hey, it's me." She heard Korra open the door with Opal. "I brought someone who wants to talk to you."

"You wanna talk, then talk."

"I'm sorry being here has been so hard for you. When you showed up, I was so excited to get to know you. I'd heard so many great things about you from mom and grandma Toph. So I guess I was kind of sad that you didn't wanna get to know me. Believe me, I know my family can be a little crazy and overwhelming sometimes, but I would love it so much if you would be a part of it." Opalk explained as Lin looked out the window.

"Get out."

"Sorry. Did I say something wrong?"

"Get out!"

Opal walked out at that before Korra turned to Lin. "What's your problem? Don't get mad at Opal. I asked her to talk to you because I thought it would help you snap out of whatever funk you're in, but I guess I was wrong."

"Why don't you focus on fixing the world and stop trying to fix my family?"

"Su's right. You're never gonna change. You're always gonna be a bitter, lonely woman." Korra bit back before leaving.

And missing the tears that fell down Lin's face.

To Be Continued.
