Chapter III
The Calling.
After Korra failed to Return to Republic City, everyone's been worried about her fate. So Tenzin tasked Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo With finding the Avatar with Naruto tagging along. Unbeknownst to the kids, Korra found refuge in the swamp with Toph, Who discovered there was still metal poison in her body. But when Toph tried removing it, Korra resisted. Will the airbender kids and Naruto find the Avatar and help her return to action?
Air Temple Island.
"Tenzin, are you sure you can't go with them?"
Pema asked her husband who sighed. "Raiko asked me to stay here And help figure out a diplomatic solution To this Kuvira problem."
"Mom, we'll be fine," Ikki said as she and Meelo jumped on the railing. "Grandpa Aang and his friends were around our age when they traveled the world. Plus Naruto's with us."
"Well, at least I won't have to worry about you starving out there," Pema said, bringing up a sack of food.
"Mom, we're going to be in the wild, Living off the land. We don't need your food." Meelo spoke as he turned at that with Poki mirroring him.
"But I made your favorite treat."
"Sweet buns with happy faces on them?" He asked, turning to see his mother pick up said bun. "Well, I guess we're not officially on the road yet." He took it and frowned at the messed-up face on it. "Aw, this one is smudged. I can't eat this."
"You know, sometimes, things get smudged in the wild."
Later, they're packing Jinora's bison Pepper before hugging their parents goodbye. "Were you able to get a read on Korra yet?" Tenzin asked Jinora who shook her head.
"No, but once we're further out, I'll be able to hone in on her spiritual energy. We should be able to find her within a few days."
"Good luck, and be careful. Remember, Naruto's in charge." Tenzin said as they all got on Pepper.
"I answer to no man."
"Meelo."
"Now, let's move out, soldiers."
Jinora sighed as she snapped the reins. "Pepper, yip-yip."
All of them then flew off at that.
Later Mountain Stupa.
Pepper lands on a circular structure on a mountain with a dome building in the middle and square pillars around the edge. "Finally! I've been holding my pee for an hour." Meelo jumped off and ran behind one of the pillars as Naruto jumped down to stretch.
"If you get through to Korra, tell her I said hi."
Naruto turned to see Ikki talking to Jinora who was trying to meditate. "Come on, let's talk to the people in the village to see if they saw Korra." Naruto walked over and saw Meelo holding a paper.
He looked to see a rather good drawing of Korra with her long hair before he, Ikki, and Meelo jumped off. The two kids pulled the wings up as Naruto flew.
They got to the town as Meelo went up to an elderly woman before holding up the picture as Ikki walked over. "Have you seen this woman?"
"Well, aren't you an adorable little thing?"
"I'm not adorable. I'm dangerous." Meelo corrected before the woman pinched his cheeks.
"Dangerously cute with those cheeks."
She then left as Meelo turned to the others. "This never happened."
They then separate to cover more ground. Their search for the Avatar yields no results, and they move on to the next town, where a man wonders if they still even have an Avatar, before apologizing for not having seen Korra.
During one of their searches, Meelo finds a young girl selling flowers to passersby. Soaring down from the roof he is on, he lands near her and asks if she can be trusted. Receiving a positive answer, he leans toward her in a conspiring manner and whispers that he is on a top-secret mission to locate the Avatar, inquiring if the girl has seen her.
Although she has not, the girl is impressed by his quest, leading Meelo to brag about the many dangerous and crazy things he has encountered. He introduces himself and asks flirtatiously what he may call her besides "beautiful". As the girl introduces herself as Tuyen, Ikki interrupts them, chanting in a teasing manner that her brother has "found a girlfriend".
Against his yelled requests for her to leave him alone, she approaches the two and tells Meelo that Jinora has been looking for him because they are moving on to the next town. Before Meelo leaves, Tuyen offers him a flower and wishes him good luck on his mission. Walking away, she caresses his head as she passes.
Meelo momentarily stares after her with a love-struck expression before rounding on his sister, accusing her of chasing away the love of his life.
Fish Town.
Meelo was walking on a dock before looking at a hut. "Naruto, Jinora, Ikki! It's Korra!"
"Where?/Where?/Where?"
Meelo pointed at a picture of Korra beside the adult Aang's picture. "It's just a photo of Korra," Jinora said as Meelo nodded.
"At least it's something."
"Pretty neat, huh?" The vendor smiled. "She came here about… Six months ago."
"Looks like someone just drummed up a good old-fashioned lead," Meelo smirked before turning to the man. "Then where did she go?"
"Oh, I don't know, but she wasn't looking too good."
"Ikki, this is all your fault," Meelo said to his sister who blinked.
"What? I didn't do anything."
"Exactly, you need to start pulling your weight. That goes for you too, so-called leader." Meelo walked away after having the trio sigh before Ikki spoke.
"Remember when he used to be so nice and sweet?"
"No."
"No."
Swamp.
Korra stretched as she walked up to Toph who was laying on a log whistling. "So… What's the plan for today?"
"You're looking at it."
"But we didn't do anything yesterday Or the day before that." Korra sighed, sitting down herself. "I know! Tell me the story about how you taught Aang to earthbend."
"What's there to tell? I threw some rocks at the Avatar, He got all whiny, and Sokka fell in a hole."
"I thought there'd be more to it than that. What about the time you guys took down the Fire Lord? That must have been epic."
"Oh, yeah. It was hot, I was on a blimp, And I think a giant turtle showed up. Wow, what a day."
"Okay, you're terrible at telling stories.: Korra sighed as she started to tap her foot.
"You're terrible at listening to them," Toph yelled before earthbending a rock under Korra's foot to have her stop tapping. Quit making all that racket. If you're so antsy to do something, why don't you go and collect some mushrooms for dinner?"
"You got it." Korra stood and walked away.
"Take the path till you see the boulder with a hole in it. Then go to your left. Oh, and make sure you get the big, slimy ones. They're the tastiest."
As Korra walks through the Foggy Swamp, she experiences visions of her past enemies: Amon, Unalaq, Zaheer, and the Red Lotus, poisoning her. Debilitated by the visions, she stumbles and falls to the ground in fear. She screams and frantically looks around though finds herself mentally back in the swamp.
Despite being able to calm herself, she cannot bring herself to move out of the stream of water has run into during her hallucinations.
The Others.
In a clearing, Naruto flew up and saw the swamp before landing beside Jinora. "Only thing I can see is a large swamp."
"Could Korra be there?" Ikki asked as Naruto shrugged.
"Might as well check."
The Swamp.
"There you are."
Korra turned to see Toph walking up to her. "You got my dinner yet?"
"No, this swamp, it did crazy things to my mind. I had visions Of all the times my enemies attacked and/or hurt me."
"Yeah, I figured something like that might happen."
"What? You wanted me to see those visions? You are one twisted old lady, you know that?" Korra said, bringing up her knees to her chest.
"Look, I know you want to get better, and so does the swamp. It can sense you're out of balance. It'll teach you what you need to learn if you're open to listening." Toph explained cleaning her ear with her pinky.
"OK, swamp. I'm all ears." Korra sighed as Toph sat down.
"You said you saw your past enemies. Now, why do you think that is?" Toph asked as Korra sighed.
"I don't know, because they've made me and a lot of other people suffer."
"Sounds like you're carrying around your former enemies, the same way you're still carrying around that metal poison," Toph said as Korra looked over. "Have you ever considered maybe you could learn something from them?"
"Sounds like the swamp's messing with your mind too," Korra said as Toph looked down from her higher spot.
"My mind is just fine, thank you. Listen, what did Amon want? Equality for all. Unalaq? He brought back the spirits. And Zaheer believed in freedom."
"I guess." Korra sighed leaning back.
"The problem was, those guys were totally out of balance, And they took their ideologies too far."
"OK, fine. But that doesn't explain why they keep haunting me."
"Because you need to face your fears," Toph spoke, putting her hands on her lap. "You can't expect to deal with future enemies if you're still fighting the old ones."
"Maybe you're right, but how am I supposed to move on?"
"Boy, you Avatars sure need a lot of hand-holding. Get up." Toph stood at that having Korra follow suit. "We're going to the banyan grove tree."
Later, they got to the large tree in the middle and looked at the sunset. "It's beautiful. The roots of the banyan-grove tree spread out for miles in every direction, connecting this whole swamp. Your problem is you've been disconnected for too long, disconnected from the people who love you and disconnected from yourself."
Korra walked to a root and touched it before seeing the others who were in the swamp.
A few minutes later, the group got to the tree before the kids flew over to hug her.
"Oh, we missed you so much, Korra," Ikki said as she smiled. "I missed you so much too."
She looked up to see Naruto before running after to hug him. "Missed you too Korra." He said pulling back to run his hand through her hair.
"How did you find me all the way out here?"
"Jinora sensed your energy," Naruto said before Toph walked up.
"I-I'm so sorry. This is Meelo., Jinora., Ikki, Aang, and Katara's grandchildren." Korra said as Toph looked at the kids.
"Your grandpa was a real pain in my butt."
"Wait a minute, cranky, old, blind… You must be Toph!" Meelo spoke, having Toph chuckle.
"Oh, I like this one."
"And this is my husband, Naruto," Korra said as Naruto waved.
"You need to come home, Korra. Kuvira is taking over the Earth Kingdom." Jinora said, turning before Ikki continued.
"You have to stop her."
"I don't know. I'm not the Avatar I used to be. I even have a harder time going into the Avatar State."
"Come on Korra…" Naruto put his hands on her face and had her stare at him. "They would need the Avatar… I'll be there to help you."
Later, the group is in Toph's home as Korra stares at a fire. "Alright, I'm ready."
"I'm not bending it out of you. You got to do this on your own." Toph said as Korra turned, took a firmer stance and slowly exhaled. "Close your eyes. Clear your mind. And don't freak out like last time. Now, focus your energy. Find the metal. Let it move through your body." Korra starts to bend the metal inside her, but as she gets the visions of Zaheer suffocating her again, she loses her concentration and breaks her stance.
"That fight is over. Release the fear." Korra gets back in her stance, exhales, and starts bending the poison again. Tiny droplets of mercury come out of her arms and she moves them down the length of her arms to form a larger drop in front of her. She repeats the process one more time, removing the last of the poison from her body. Toph bends two hemispheres around it, locking the poison inside. "Well done, Korra."
Korra's eyes shoot open, revealing the brilliant white glow of the Avatar State as Meelo grinned "The Avatar is back in business!"
"I feel so much lighter," Korra said before turning to Toph. "Thank you so much for helping me. I'd like to give you a hug now if that's okay with you."
"Alright. You earned it." Toph reluctantly said having Korra hug her.
Later, the group got on Pepper and got ready to leave. "Bye, Toph!"
"Bye, see you later."
"It was so nice to meet you!" Naruto waved at that before Ikki spoke.
"We're gonna miss you!"
"Finally, some peace and quiet," Toph said with a smile before walking back into the tree grove.
