Chapter 6: Undeserved Joy
Review Responses
FeathersofMemory: - Heh, thank you so so much for the review! And as such now you can know why Obito was at the bridge ^^ yayyy! I hope you like this chapter and appreciate all your support! And yeah Kakashi tried to stay positive about his team, cause he could let something like that get him depressed. That's not very Kakashi-like.
Wasn'tMeISwear: - Hey Hey Hey! Thank you so much for your support and I'm happy you liked the breakdown, it was er, interesting to write ^^; And well, now you can know why Obito was at the gate! Thanks again and have a wonderful day!
Aye (Guest): - Hmm, maybe they did? You'd have to read this chapter to find out! heheh ^^
Story synopsis: In amidst the tension of Kakashi's and Obito's duel, both rely on their Kamui to claim victory. Kamui is a powerful mangekyou, and when used lightly the results can be life-changing. Literally. It's a Kekkei Genkai that allows transportation through space-time, so why not actual time? Neither Kakashi nor Obito was at all prepared for what was install for them. And it doesn't help that neither knows that the other is from the future. (Yet another time travel Naruto fanfic! They are much too common, but are also amazing so why not? Probably an eventual KakaObi at some point maybe)
It was dark. That was the first thing that had registered in Obito's mind when he had awoken from his dreamless sleep. He couldn't remember much of his breakdown, but the feeling of rejection and guilt continues to pierce his heart as consciousness streamed through his system. He'd lifted his head, wincing when putting pressure on his hands. They hurt. There must have been something causing them to hurt, but he Uchiha didn't care. He needed to leave. That was all that had gone through his mind. He needed to leave the village, and he couldn't return. He wasn't worthy of this life of bliss and friendship... He finally understood. He understood that he didn't belong here... A murderous villain like him deserved nothing of a sort that related to happiness. How could he enjoy his life, after realizing how much pain he'd inflicted on others?
Simple. He couldn't enjoy his life. Not in the slightest.
Obito moved up, his head banging on the underside of the table, not really remembering that he'd been under it in the first place before he stood on his feet. His mind attempted to filter out any unnecessary thoughts as he regained himself, getting his bearings together before making any rash decisions. It was beyond true that he didn't deserve any sort of happiness, but he didn't want to continue living that murderous life he had been. If he left, where would he go? What would he do? Could he try to fix what he had wronged? Would he even have the strength to do so? Obito clenched his fists as he stood in the darkness of his room. Unaware, or rather uncaring of the red that was seeping through his tightening grip, dripping onto the floor. The boy may not have been in the right mind, having only just woken up, but he was still able to know that it was nearing 10 at night. He needed to leave. He couldn't stand being here another second.
He didn't deserve this peaceful lifestyle.
He stood there. Silently staring at the ground. A minute passed, maybe two? Maybe it was ten..? The boy's thoughts were too far-gone to care how long he'd stood there. Hundreds of people he'd brutally killed who should be in his place. Having a joyous life. Having friends who cared about them, a sensei who worried for them, a village to protect them. Anyone would be glad to have such a life. Obito was not. It sickened him, that a person such as himself. A murderer. A delusional psychopath would be blessed to have life such as that. He didn't deserve it. None of it.
That was why he fumbled to his front door, legs stricken with pins and needles. They pricked at his skin, shouting at him to stop moving. To sit down. To not walk out that door.
To stay.
But Obito ignored his leg's cries and opened the door. He walked out and was met with the freezing wind of the night. It was like walking into a blizzard in a sense. But whether or not this was because his clothes hadn't dried properly and were still damp, causing his skin to seem ice cold Obito wouldn't know. Nonetheless, he ignored it. He ignored everything. He walking silently, mind not registering the note that had been left at the doorstep, walking right over it and out into the night. He needed to get out of there. He needed to disappear. It's what he deserved.
And disappear he would. Whether it is from hunger, an attacking weapon, a comrades Jutsu, or from himself. He would disappear. He would make sure of it. So that was what drove his thoughts. What he assumed would be some of his last. He hoped they would be. He continued towards, eyes looking honestly rather lifeless to some degree. One would think that the boy's realisation wouldn't hit him so hard to lead him to this state of mind, right? Well... One would need to bear in mind the mental stability of the person. Obito wasn't in any condition to come to the realisation he did. He was tired of... everything. And so his un co-ordinated steps eventually did make it to the gate, where two guards stood, curious to his unjustified appearance.
"Who goes th- oh. A Genin." One had said, eyes looking at Obito's forehead protector. His goggles were covering it partially, but it was still recognisable. "What are you doing out so late? Without direct orders from the Sandaime, you have no business here!" The guard's tone turned stern, but his words weren't getting through to the Uchiha. He hadn't heard a single thing.
"I don't deserve to be here... I don't deserve. I don't- deserve..." Were the barely coherent mutters Obito had given as a response, or maybe they were his own thoughts slipping past his lips. Either way, the two guards questioned what he was saying. When Obito didn't respond and when he had continued to walk towards the two guards, they raised their weapons defensively. One went to tell the other to report to the Hokage, but before they could do as told, Obito had lifted his head. Eyes staring at nothing as his Mangekyou activated. The two men didn't stand much of a chance as Kamui warped the space around them, taking them away to a dimension no one had heard of in this timeline. They wouldn't return anytime soon, if at all. Obito didn't care. He just wanted to disappear.
They were gone, and the Uchiha stood there. The gate is open in front of him. He could leave. Yes. He'd leave, maybe walk until a cliff came to stop his path, but continue walking anyways. That sounded good. It sounded like that would make up for all the treasonous actions he'd been responsible for. He went to take a step but felt his heart-ache. Or what has left of it anyway. There was something. A feeling, or maybe a sound that caused him to freeze. It resounded behind him. It was faint, almost sounding as if in disbelief, and was all too familiar to the Uchiha.
"... Obito?..." The voice had asked, but Obito didn't find it in himself to turn around. He knew who was there. He knew. It was him. Why was he here!? Obito didn't know in the slightest, but knowing who it was standing behind him made his heart crack. The worry in his voice. The concern. The fear. Obito didn't want to hear it ever again. He wanted to disappear. He didn't deserve to hear that voice ever again. But as he heard slow footsteps grow closer to him, he didn't know what to do. He didn't know. He didn't know! Nothing wanted to work in his body and it hadn't taken much for his breathing to pick up, and for his legs that had ceaselessly been pricked at to finally give out.
He dropped to his knees. And running was heard coming from behind him. Obito's head felt like it was on fire when a hand touched his shoulder in comfort. The hand was warm...
"Obito! A-Are you alright!? What hap- your bleeding! What's going on!?" The Hatake's voice was filled with stress. It made the Uchiha want to heave. He didn't deserve those words of concern. Obito's eyes failed to meet the others, finding the concrete ground, which had drips of blood staining it for a reason unknown to him.
"...Kakashi..." He'd mumbled barely above a whisper. He wanted to shove the boy away from him. He wanted to run away and disappear already.
"Obito!" Kakashi had asked in concern. His tone nearing panic. Obito hadn't noticed when the Hatake had forced his head up to look at his. The Uchiha wished he hadn't done that, because he could now plainly see the apprehension painted so brightly on Kakashi's face. He was worried about him. Why? "You need to tell me what happened!" The Hatake had practically demanded, which was a tone the Uchiha was more used to, coming from the grey-haired boy.
"I..." He'd started, mouth wanting to form words but being unable to. He closed his eyes, shook his head in refusal, and tried to push himself away from the other. He needed to leave. Obito stood abruptly, attempting to make a beeline for the gate, anxiety drowning out any physical pain he was feeling, but before he was far enough away, Kakashi had caught hold of his hand. Obito didn't face the boy. He didn't think he'd be able to bear it.
"Where are you going? Obito?" Doubt was hidden in Kakashi's words. But his grip was tight on Obito's and only showed that he wouldn't let go. It hurt. The grip made his hand hurt. He didn't know why. Obito's eye's bore down on their hands not a moment later. Watching as red was dripping from the connection. He... was bleeding? He was... when did he- the broken glass at his apartment... Obito stared down a few moments later, and Kakashi hadn't dared move from his spot. Obito didn't know what to do, but he couldn't continue recklessly doing whatever he wanted. So, he visibly took a breath of air and sighed to clear his mind. Two eyes soon looked at Kakashi, taking in his features as he came himself as best he could.
"I don't... deserve to be here... I'm leaving." Was all he'd say on the topic really. Kakashi's face had twisted in confusion a little, but Obito could tell he had been pondering the words spoken. Obito knew it clear as day now. He was a villain. He wasn't good. right? So he needed to make up for what he'd done. Death seemed acceptable in his eyes, as one death is nothing compared to what he'd caused, but it was all he could do really. Just roll over and die like the trash he was. However, Obito had momentarily been broken of his thoughts, when he saw Kakashi's expression change. He seemed to come to a conclusion for something. And while Obito was sure that Kakashi would berate him, or verbally assault him like the Kakashi he had known would. What had happened was... Not right.
Kakashi tugged on his arm, pulling Obito towards him before embracing him.
"You do deserve to be here Obito. What got you thinking that way? ..." Kakashi was quiet for a moment, and Obito was a little overwhelmed to really understand the meaning behind his next words. "Please... Please don't leave again..." The words weren't very coherent, so Obito couldn't say he'd picked up on them. But he did understand that whatever was said was most likely of value to his comrade. Kakashi's grip was tight. It was like if he'd let go, Obito would have faded out of existence. The brunette didn't know how to react at all, so he stayed quiet... That was until he found a certain set of words roll from his mouth.
"I'm sorry..." He whispered. It was quiet, and even in a bustling crowd, Kakashi would have been the only one who would be close enough to hear it. He was really close... Obito had finally made the speculation, and he could only be so thankful Kakashi had decided to let him go right then. But his hand hadn't left Obito's even when he drew himself away. The Uchiha found himself staring at the linked hands. Not daring to move his away. He didn't know what to do about anything at this point. Kakashi made him feel like what he was about to do, which was to leave and practically kill himself, was... not right. But wasn't it what he deserved?
Kakashi had run his free hand through his hair as if in thought, and little did Obito know that the Hatake was currently throwing up his options of what to do about leaving the village himself. It was when Kakashi finally did turn to look at Obito, who slowly met his gaze in return- still feeling a little out of it- that the Uchiha became aware, or slightly aware of what was on the Hatake's mind.
"Well... Let's see... I'm not all too sure what to do about this situation... I was going to leave the village as well, you see. For a reason... I can't really tell you about it." Kakashi had scratched his cheek sheepishly, and the action made Obito's heart feel a little lighter. But then confusion swamped the Uchiha. Kakashi was planning on leaving the village as well? What on earth for? Kakashi was very loyal to Konoha so deserting it didn't seem like something he would do. He must have had a valid reason for doing so. Obito sighed internally. At least he was thinking clearer...
"Why are you leav-" Obito went to ask but then shook his head, finding his anguish slowly drift away with every moment that passed by. "No, I shouldn't ask, right?" Kakashi simply gave a small nod. It seemed that the Hatake had then noticed the link their hands created, and he'd quickly pulled away. Obito's features dropped a little at the action, watching as the warmth of Kakashi's hand vanished. His ice-cold fingers, dripping with red missed the touch of the other, but Obito didn't let it get to him. He couldn't let every little thing affect like this. If Kakashi was leaving- well whatever the case, he would let him go. At least not unless...
"You see I-" Kakashi had started before being cut off.
"I'm coming with you," Obito stated simply, finding a smile wanting to pull on his lip at the idea of accompanying his younger comrade. Kakashi looked shocked, to say the least at Obito's proposition. But he didn't really have a say in it seeming that Obito wouldn't be one to say no to.
"W-What?" Was really all Kakashi could get out. Obito felt a small smile actually appear on his face. Whether or not it was genuine Obito wasn't sure...
"That's right! You're crazy if you think you can leave without me. So whatever it is your doing, I'll come along and help!" Obito wasn't at all as joyous as he played that statement out as, since the idea of being undeserving of Kakashi's care continued to sit at the back of his mind. But he supposed that helping the Hatake with his goal would help make up even a little bit for all the pain he put the boy through. Like how he never returned after being alive... How he was ultimately responsible for getting their sensei killed... How he had blamed Kakashi for killing Rin for so long... How he- Actually this wasn't the time to think of that, or he may just fall apart again. He had to stay composed... For now at least...
Thankfully it seemed that Obito had said something right for once because he'd then saw Kakashi do that odd eye smile again... Or... whatever it was. He really wasn't sure. But normally it meant the boy was in good spirits from what Obito gathered. The Hatake scratched the back of his head, mulling something over in his mind if Obito were to guess.
"I guess that'll be ok. Let's get to the outer border... Then let's bandage your hands, and your head too. Why are you even bleeding? And your clothes are damp... Did you even clean yourself since before?" Kakashi asked absentmindedly, not aware of how it would affect the Uchiha. Obito himself hadn't noticed his head bleeding, but when he wiped his sleeve- which he now registered was wet according to Kakashi's words- on his forehead, there was indeed some blood on the sleeve when he went to look at it. It seemed he'd hurt himself more than he'd cared to realise... The thought of how he'd lashed out at nothing back at his apartment made Obito's insides twist. He really lost it back there... Honestly, if he wasn't careful he might lose it again. He still wondered if he deserved this life. This peaceful, joyous life. It didn't seem right to steal it from innocents as he had... It wasn't right. He knew that.
Obito knew he had a Kunai on him, so he decided that if it did really lead to him having to kill himself, he would. After all... He couldn't trust himself. What if he ended up doing horrible things in the timeline? Evil never really does leave one... Just before he'd sent those two men into Kamui without any hesitation. He hadn't cared if they'd had families or loved ones. He had simply removed them out of his way so he could achieve his goal. He'd done it again. He hadn't changed at all. He was still a villain. He wouldn't change... He could try and try but he knew at the end of the day that if he was removed from the picture then everything would be better for everyone. Kakashi had more or less moved on from him dying in the last timeline... And it wasn't like Rin would ever really like him in the way his younger self had hoped. Even if Kakashi did end up killing her again... If he was gone then... maybe... It would be better...
Maybe life would be better for everyone else.
But, Obito decided that he couldn't think like that. Not while he was with Kakashi. So, as Kakashi put a hand his shoulder- understanding that the Uchiha wouldn't answer any of the questions he'd asked- Obito felt his teammate direct him towards the gate. Obito's mind flicked on when he was moved, and continued walking alongside Kakashi. The Uchiha sighed under his breath when he felt Kakashi remove his hand from his shoulder, almost disheartened by the lack of warmth. He was cold. Really cold. He couldn't believe the fact that he'd walked all the way to the front gate from the Uchiha compound in this coldness. His mind must have neared shutting down if it hadn't been affected by the temperature beforehand. It felt like it wanted to shut down again if Obito was honest. But he didn't let it. Kakashi was next to him. He'd be alright... for now.
So they walked out of Konoha alongside the other. They did soon have to stealthily make it past other guards that had been stationed away from the village, but they were making progress anyways. Obito for most of the time was watching Kakashi, who would lead them on their mission to... well Obito didn't know. But he followed the grey-haired Hatake nonetheless. He tried to stay close. So he wouldn't lose him, Obito told himself, although he doubted that was the reason. He shrugged it off. Kakashi made him feel... better. He made him feel... not like a villain.
He made him feel like his old self.
It was nice.
Authors notes:
Oh geez, I really just couldn't stop myself from writing this all in one day. Chapter 5 had simply gotten so many reviews! And I just knew I had to write another chapter pronto! It's a little on the shortish side, but I didn't want to drag out this one scene for so long. Since a scene normally takes up half a chapter, but this one took up the whole thing. I didn't expect myself to write the whole thing in Obito's perspective but it kinda just happened. I'm definitely giving his perspective a break next chapter... Either way, Seriously thank you all so much for your continued support and do please leave a review since it means the literal world to me. Cya next time! Also, since I wrote 3 chapters in 3 days I may take a tiny break of a few days before getting back into it ^^;
