The bullpen was bustling with detectives, huddled round desks, working on cases. Jay Halstead was sitting at his desk.
Jay glanced as his watch, realising it's been hours since he last ate. His blood sugar levels have been fluctuating lately, but he's been too busy too pay attention.
"I should've grabbed a snack, Damn paperwork." Jay muttered to himself.
Hailey approached with concern etched on her face.
"Jay, you okay? You look pale."
Jay looked up and nodded.
"Yeah, just a little tired. Haven't had time to eat."
Hailey narrowed her eyes, noticing the telltale signs.
"Jay, your hands are shaking. Are you-."
Before she can finish. Jay sways in his chair, his vision blurring.
"I'm fine. Just need-."
His words slur, and he slumps forward, unconscious.
Later, Jay wakes up on the couch in the break room, disoriented.
Hailey sits beside him, holding a juice box.
"Welcome back. Sleeping beauty!"
"What happened?" Jay asked.
"You passed out, genius. Low blood sugar. You're lucky I found you in timeā¦"
Jay rubbed his temples, embarrassed.
"I've been neglecting my diabetes lately, too much going on."
"Well, you're not doing anyone good if you collapse. From now on, I'm your snack monitor."
She hands him the juice box and he takes a sip.
"Thanks. Upton." Jay smiles.
Hailey smirked and sat on the couch.
"Don't thank me yet. You owe me a doughnut."
They share a smile, and Jay realises how lucky he is to have someone looking out for him.
