Melody swam through the dark waters, her heart pounding in her chest. She had been searching for Misty for what felt like hours, she was confused as the day before, the two of them had agreed to meet up in their usual spot, so they could go to the cave to explore, but that didn't seem to be the case. Eventually, Melody spotted the young sea cat's sleek form perched on a rock formation. ''Misty!'' she shouted, waving to her friend. Misty's eyes gleamed with a soft, golden light as she saw her friend's form coming into view. ''Melody!'' she shouted, happiness coming over her, as the two friends scooped each other up in a tight embrace, though Melody seemed to be the only capable of scooping up Misty, as Misty seemed to be having difficult lifting up Melody, for the size difference between them. ''I was starting to get worried about you, girl? I got tired of waiting, and decided to take up a spot on this rock. What happened?''
Melody hesitated for a moment, unsure of how much to reveal. But something about her bestest friend's kind eyes and warm tone put her at ease. ''I think my father and aunt are planning something bad,'' she whispered. ''They've been acting weird for a while now. At first I didn't think anything of it, but now I'm sure.'' At this Misty's ears folded back in concern. ''What do you mean?'' Melody took a deep breath. ''I think he might be planning to do something bad. Like some sort of dark magic. You know how he usually gives me this strange medicine in the morning? Well, he told me he spoke to my doctor,'' Melody paused as she put up her fingers in gestures as she continued. ''He said I have to start taking the medicine at night time as well as the mornings. What's strange about it, is when I tried to ask about what the potion is, he wouldn't answer me. He told me it's just something I need to keep healthy, but I don't remember ever being terrible sick as a kid!'' Misty's tail twitched, as she let out a soft growl at the last part. ''What're you going to do?'' she asked. ''Your father seems to be hiding something from you, Mel. You can't go back there.'' Melody's eyes started to well up with tears as she searched her friend's eyes for what to do next, a mix of fear and desperation collecting up inside her. ''I don't know what to do,'' she whispered. ''I feel like I'm trapped in this big web of secrets and lies. I don't even know what's real anymore.''
''Well, for starters what you and I have is one hundred percent real.'' Misty smiled. ''As for what we're going to do, I was thinking we should seek help in Atlantica. Maybe someone there can help us. You have your map with you, right?'' Melody's eyes lit up with hope as she nodded, the corners of her mouth curling into a small smile. ''Yes, I have it,'' she said patting the small, intricately drawn map hidden in her white camisole, she'd secretly placed it there that morning, to get past her father. Misty's tail twitched with excitement. ''Then there's nothing stopping us, let's get moving Melody. We'll swim to Atlantica and see what the merpeople there can do to help us.''
As the two friends set off for the kingdom, the ocean around them grew quieter, as if the sea itself was listening in on their conversation. The wind began to pick up, carrying the whispers of the ancient ones on its breath, as Melody felt a shiver run down her spine as she realized the ocean seemed to be trying to guide them. The journey seemed to be like no other for the two. What felt like minuets turned into hours, as they found themselves swimming into warmer waters, the difference in temperature quickly picked up by Melody as they continued on forward. As the warmth enveloped them, Melody felt her worries began to dissipate, replaced by a sense of wonder and excitement. She looked up at Misty, who was swimming effortlessly alongside her, her flings slicing through the water with ease. ''Look, Misty, Melody said, as she pointed to a cluster of coral reefs teeming with life. ''It's like nothing I've ever seen before. We don't have those back where I'm from.'' Misty grinned, her eyes shining with amusement. ''If I'm reading the map right, it says we just landed in the Tropical Sea. Atlantica is straight ahead.
As they swam deeper into the kingdom, the coral formations grew more vibrant, the colors more vivid. Schools of fish darted past them, their scales shimmering like diamonds in the sunlight filtering down from above. The air grew warmer still, and Melody felt her skin prickle with goosebumps as she realized they were entering a hidden cove. The water was crystal clear, unlike how it usually looked in the Antarctic, reflecting the beauty of the surrounding reefs like a mirror. Once they emerged on the other side of the cove, Melody was stunned at the sight before her. In the center stood an enormous statue of two mermaids. A mermaid queen and king by the looks of her. With her long hair flowing like seaweed in the gentle current, and the merman with his long beard. ''They look so happy.'' Melody whispered.
''What're you looking at, Mel?'' Said Misty, finally noticing Melody hadn't been following her anymore. Slowly she joined her friend's side, the two of them taking in the statue together. Melody couldn't help but notice the intricate details etched into the stone. The mermaid's faces were serene, their smiles gentle, their eyes full of so much love for one another, Melody felt her heart ache as she took in the breathtaking sight. ''Who do you think they are?''
''Probably the king and queen of Atlantica.'' Misty replied.
''I wish I could love someone as much as they love each other.'' Melody's eyes lingered on the statue, her mind reeling from the revelations. Misty noticed her friend's distress and slipped an arm around her shoulders. "Hey, Melody, it's okay," she said softly. "One day you will. In the meantime, I can love you.'' Misty meowed, which made Melody instantly smile, as she grabbed her friend, pulling her into a tight, warm hug. Misty's meow, a gentle purr, vibrated against Melody's ear as she held her friend tightly. The sound was like music to Melody's ears, a reminder that even in the midst of uncertainty, there was still love to be found. As they hugged, the statue seemed to fade into the background, its secrets and mysteries momentarily forgotten. All that mattered was the warmth and security of their bond, the knowledge that they had each other no matter what lay ahead. Melody's thoughts drifted back to her own desires, to the longing in her heart for someone to love with the same intensity as Misty loved her. She knew it might not be possible, at least not in this lifetime. But with Misty by her side, she felt a glimmer of hope. Perhaps, she thought, it wasn't about finding someone who loved her with the same intensity as Misty did. Perhaps it was about learning to love herself, flaws and all, and finding contentment in the love they shared. As they pulled back from their hug, Melody smiled up at Misty, her eyes shining with gratitude. "Thank you," she whispered. Misty's eyes sparkled with understanding. "Anytime, Melody. That's what friends are for, you ready to keep moving?''
"Ah-ah-ah!" Suddenly Melody and Misty were startled by a low and husky voice, with a unmistakable Jamaican accent. Quickly, Melody turned around, eyes still, heart beating quickly in her chest, however what stood before her, made her feel a little silly. ''A crab?'' Misty commented, as she took in the same sight Melody was. ''Is there something you need, little crab? Are you lost?''
''How-how-it-can't-not be.'' Confused, Melody turned her eyes away from the crab, looking to catch Misty's eyes, as she shook her head, pulling her outta her thoughts, as she went to approach the small crab. As the crab began whispering things to himself, the others couldn't hear, a sudden commotion broke out beneath the waves. The water churned and foamed, as Melody and Misty felt the ground beneath their fins trembling. The crab's eyes suddenly went wide as he searched the waves for the cause, as for a moment, the two friends were frozen in terror, and shock. In a instant of quick speed, the crab was swept up in a vortex of swirling water. Melody and Misty gasped as they watched, powerless, as the crab was dragged away, his claws flailing wildly as he tried to grasp for something, anything to hold onto. As they watched, eyes glued on the vortex, and the power little crab, a massive eel suddenly burst forth from the depths, its long, serpentine body writhed and twisted like a living thing, with its one yellow eyes glowing with an otherworldly light. The eel's skin was a dull grey, like the color of the rocks Misty had been sitting upon when they'd found each other, but it seemed to ripple and writhe like the very fabric of reality. The eel's jaws was open wise, revealing rows of razor - sharp teeth as it wrapped its body around the crab. The crab's screams were muffled as he was pulled from the tight struggle from the vortex, into the eel's deadly embrace.
''No! Let go of him!'' Melody shouted as with a burst of adrenaline, charged with everything she possessed right at the eel. But before Melody could reach the eel, it was too late. The eel had always wrapped its body around the crab, and was pulling him down into the depths of the ocean. Melody's cry was drowned out by the sound of the water crashing against the rocks below, and the eel's eerie glow seemed to pulse with malevolent energy.
Misty's eyes were fixed on the spot where the eel had disappeared, her face pale with fear. ''Melody, what are we going to do?'' she whispered, voice trembling. Melody's anger and determination had given way to a sense of desperation, as she stared at the spot where the eel had disappeared, her mind racing with thoughts of rescue. ''We have to help him!'' she exclaimed, eyes flashing with determination. ''But how, we can't do it on our own.''
As Melody's words trailed off, the sea around them seemed to grow quieter, as if the waves themselves were listening to their conversation. The wind died down, and an eerie silence fell over the ocean. It was as if the sea was holding its breath, waiting for Melody and Misty's next move. ''We need to get to the palace, demand to talk to the king. He needs to be warned about a giant eel, snatching up sea creatures. Imagine what could have happened if children were playing out here.'' As Melody spoke, the silence seemed to deepen, as if the sea was absorbing every word. Misty's eyes grew wide with understanding, and she nodded vigorously in agreement. "Yes, yes, we have to go to the palace! The king needs to know what's happening out here!" But as they turned to make their way towards the palace, they were met with an unexpected sight. The once-clear waters around them had begun to churn and foam for the second time, as if another storm was brewing. Misty's eyes grew wide with fear as she grasped Melody's arm, letting out meows of fear. "What's happening? What's going on?"
''Aha, it's like taking candy from a couple of mer-babies. That was easier than I thought.'' Chuckled a deep male voice. Slowly as they met the face of the specter, the crazy storm seemed to dissipate, the two friends eyes widening in surprise as they took in the sight of the person before them. Standing before them was a ruggedly handsome man, but there was something odd about him. He had the tail of what reminded Melody of the eel they'd just encountered, and the top half of a merman. His skin was light purple, hair light grey, his chiseled features and his one pericing yellow eye made him look like a sea god. He was dressed in a bright purple and black suit, accompanied by a small cute - looking purple bow tie in the middle of the chest. Adorned with shells and pearls, and what appeared to be a yellow sea shell necklace strapped around his neck. ''Well this is awkward,'' he said, once he noticed them..
