(The Evans)
(Rose's POV)
I stayed in that shop the rest of that day. I managed to get some sleep on a dog bed that Jessica had brought in. However, it smelled like another dog; a familiar one. It smelled like Kaiden, my brother. And it was strong too. Why would he be here?
Last I saw him was in Central Park about a 7 months ago. Did he move here? Guess I'll have to find out when we get to her house. The whole time I slept, I dreamed about home as I always did. I saw my family, my mate, my pups, my friends and their pups. For a moment, I dreamed about being with Felix and Alex. Felix was much scarier in them as opposed in real life. They were all the same; sad and lonely. Oh, how I missed them...
(Salt Lake City, Utah)
We drove for a long while until there was no more city. All there was around us was mountains, fields, grass, and trees, and some lines hanging from large brown poles. I poke my head out and look around, perking my mix-matched ears up. Where was I?
It was in the evening, by the time we made it to her neighborhood supposedly. There was a gorgeous sunset, just like the ones back in New York City. It made me wonder if Dodger was looking at the same sunset.
We pulled into a big farm house that had a shed, and a barn. The place looked amazing. It was quiet and peaceful, all I could hear were crickets and other insects in the yard. Jessica gets out of the car and opens the door for me.
"C'mon, Rose. You're gonna love it here," she said, moving out of the way so I could jump out. I jumped out of the car and Jessica closed the door. I walked around in the yard, sniffing around to catch any scents. The grass was soft under my paws. It felt foriegn to me because I never felt grass like this on my paws before.
Sure, Central Park had grass too but this place doesn't have the same type of grass. I looked around with my ears raised up. This seemed to be the only house within miles. "Rose!" Jessica called. My ears twitched and I looked over my shoulder and saw Jessica standing on the porch. "C'mon, girl!" she called, waving her hand towards her.
I look ahead again at the open path in front of me. I struggled to keep my paws planted where I stood. Jessica whistled to get my attention so I had no choice but to follow her. Why can't I just run? I could change my mind about staying here.
I climb up the steps and onto the porch. Jessica opened the red wood front door and we stepped inside. When I stepped inside, it was warm. Very warm in fact.
The floor was much like Jenny's houses'. I walk through another doorway that led into the livingroom, which was much, much warmer. There was a fireplace sitting between the two doorways. There was a fire lit inside of it, which explained why it was so warm in here.
In one of the chairs, was a man with dark brown hair that was short. I could only see the back of his head. "Daniel, you here?" Jessica called. "Yeah, in here," Daniel answered, getting up from the chair. He walked around the chair and saw me staring up at him, both of my ears raised up.
"Jessica, why's there a stray dog in the house?" he questioned bitterly. "I saved her from this horrible man. You should've seen how that man was treating this sweet girl," Jessica said, kneeling down and stroking my black and brown fur.
"Let's talk in the kitchen," he said, walking through a large stone arch that led into the kitchen. I could hear them talking in the kitchen. They were talking about me obviously.
I start walking around the house, my dull claws clicking on the hardwood floor. Looking up curiously, I saw head of a deer on the wall. So disturbing to see that. There was barely any deer in New York City.
Walking around the house, I smell the scent of another dog. It was the same scent as that bed that I laid on. As I walked towards the bedroom, the scent was getting stronger.
I turned towards the bedroom and was shocked by what I saw. My twin brother, Kaiden, was laying on the bed. His black semi-floppy ears perked up and his head perked up so quickly that he could've broken his own neck. He also had a scar across his forehead diagnoally.
"Rose? Is that you?" he asked, getting off of the bed. The tag hanging from his purple collar was jingling as he moved. He walked over to me and we looked at each other.
"What're you doing here?" he asked, starting to nuzzle me, dropping his ears all the way. I nuzzled him back, gently pawing him as I licked him.
"It's a long story, Kaiden. What're you doing here? I-I thought you were still in New York City," I ask, my tail wagging. We stop nuzzling each other and we smile at each other.
We jumped on the bed and lay down next to each other. Kaiden started to tell me why he's all the way here instead of New York City. "My other owner, Sandra, was killed in a robbery. Her daughter had to be taken away to another home. These people took me in after finding out what had happened. I was put into a shelter. Rose, I can't tell you how scary that was," Kaiden said, sounding sadder with each word.
I place my right forepaw over his left foreleg. "Oh, Kaiden... I'm sorry you had to deal with that. How-How'd you get that scar on you're forehead?" I asked. "The human that killed Sandra, shot me and grazed my forehead as I tried protecting her," he answered sadly, dropping his ears.
I gave him a reassuring lick to the cheek. "I'm sorry, Kaiden," I sympathetically said. "It's fine. Don't even worry about it. Now time to answer my question. What're you doing here?" he replied, raising his semi-flopped ears.
"I fell asleep on the back of a truck and drove to San Francisco. I had no idea that I was on the other side of the country. Now I'm trying to get back to them,"
Kaiden licked me on the head to comfort me. "Oh, Rose... I'm sorry. I know you can't stay here. If you leave, then I can't stop you from going back to your family," he assured.
"Aww, looks like they're getting along already," Jessica commented as they walked in the room. Kaiden jumped down from the bed and he ran to them, his tail furiously wagging. His ears were dropped as he danced around then, licking their hands. He looked so happy here.
Kaiden trotted over to me and placed his forepaws on the bed so he could lift his front half on the bed. He looked over his shoulder with a pleading whine.
"He seems to want her to stay. He has been lonely lately," Jessica said, walking over to us. She pets both Kaiden and me on our heads. Daniel looked at me for a minute and his face softened.
Daniel decided to let me stay. It had been my home for the next four months. It was going great until I noticed that Jessica's stomach had grown 4 times it's size. Kaiden told me that she was having a baby.
Hearing this made me happy because it reminded me of when I had my puppies and how they were so small. I have seen many human babies in New York City; mostly in Central Park.
(June 14, 1989)
It was in the middle of the night on the second month of me staying with Jessica and Daniel. Since my first night, I slept next to my brother since he was my family and I was comfortable. He kept the nightmares away.
I dreamed about being back with the gang. It made me realize just how long I had been gone for. I went missing since last spring, seven months.
Our sleep was disrupted by sounds of pain. We slept in the next room beside Jessica and Daniel's room. We raised our heads and perk our ears up. "What's that?" I asked. "It's gotta be Jessica," Kaiden said, getting out of the bed.
Turns out, Jessica had gone into labor so Daniel had to leave with her, but I didn't know where. Kaiden and I were left at the house for the entire night.
