Author's Note: Welcome to... MoniTale's return.
Happy Birthday my Darling Dear.
Disclaimer: I don't own Doki Doki Literature Club or Undertale. However I do own the plot of this story and our Player.
The Rushing water... It filled her with Passion.
Monika smiled and walked past Sans… twice, only offering a little wave as she went by her friend. He was nice but she couldn't help but feel like she had spent a bit too much time in this area of the game as it was. She walked into the next area and soon enough came by a precarious-looking bridge overlooking a waterfall. Below her, stretching endlessly was darkness. "Is-is there anything worth coming here for, dear?" She asked after a moment, a bit concerned about risking her life - particularly if she was doing it without a decent enough reward.
Player paused and looked around them. "Just another Echo Flower if I remember right," he said after a moment of scanning the location. He was good at remembering.. just not that good.
Monika sighed. Good, no bridge walking... yet. So that meant... She looked towards the waterfall and grimaced a bit. "We have to go through that, don't we?" She asked softly.
"Yes." Player nodded.
"Can you hold my shoes and socks for me so they don't get wet? They really aren't made for this kind of thing." She asks, starting to pull them off.
Player sighs. "I can but you need to be careful when you cross. See those rocks? You could get hit and knocked off. And who knows what could be in the water that you can injure your foot on."
She chuckles. "Darling, I think I can do this fine. Nothing up to now has been all that dangerous." She pulls off her other stocking and tosses it at him, making him catch it at the last second before she dashes through the waterfall, glad to see that it's only toe deep, and dodges the rocks as they make their way to hit her.
Player shows up next to her about now and offers her back her stuff. "That wasn't so bad," Monika admits as she puts her stockings and shoes back on. "I could have done without the rocks but the water was... kind of warm actually."
Player nods. "We're moving closer to the next zone. You'll probably be glad that you're not wearing anything too warm in the next few zones. Not pleasant weather for someone in winter stuff, I'll bet." He smirks a bit, thinking of the next few areas. They'll be a fun brain puzzle for her and -
He suddenly stops. 'Wait. Oh no. Undyne.. if..' He takes a breath. Monika can do this. She took on Toriel just fine... This may be a different situation, but he believes in her!
Monika stands up now, smiling softly. "Alright, let's go." She walks to the next room and starts into the tall grass..
Clank.
"What was that?" She asks, looking up.
"Shh!" Player advises her, worry seeping into his tone as bones rattle as well.
The rushing water makes it hard to hear, but Monika does her best.
"H...HI UNDYNE! I'M HERE WITH MY DAILY REPORT..." Papyrus says, and Monika understands entirely now. 'Undyne was the name he had said earlier, this must be a higher ranking person,' she thinks.
"UHHH... REGARDING THE.. HUMAN I CALLED YOU ABOUT EARLIER.." His voice was more subdued, possibly even a bit nervous or... afraid.
"Ight...hem?" Asked a harder-to-hear voice. It was gruff, definitely female, and.. certainly not as pleasant sounding as Papyrus. Monika almost immediately decided that this Undyne was not a person she wanted to meet.
"ER...DID I... FIGHT THEM?" He asked with a nervous twitch to his voice. "YES, OF COURSE I DID!" She could picture him gesturing in his dorkish but endearing way. She couldn't help but to smile. "I FOUGHT THEM VALIANTLY!
"..pture them?" Undyne asked again, a kind of...steel to her voice.
"DID I..CAPTURE THEM?" He paused ever so slightly, and Monika winced. She could guess that failing to catch her was like.. forgetting a poem for the Club was for her. It was inexcusable for her other members and flat out pain inducing to her. She knew he would get reprimanded for it just by his tone. "N-N-N-NO.. I DID NOT. I TRIED TO, VERY HARD, UNDYNE! B-BUT IN THE END... I FAILED."
Monika didn't hear the next part. Thankfully Papyrus filled her in. "W-WHAT?! YOU'RE GOING TO TAKE THE HUMAN'S SOUL.. YOURSELF? B-BUT UNDYNE, YOU DON'T HAVE TO DESTROY THEM!" She heard him move above her and she ducked down. They were over her now. This was bad... "YOU SEE-" Clank. "YOU...SEe.." His voice dropped off and she heard his bones jangle as he moved back. Undyne had turned to face him. He was...scared no doubt.
Without even a word, none that Monika could hear anyway, Papyrus nodded. "I...UNDERSTAND... I WILL HELP YOU IN ANYWAY I CAN." He said softly before stepping away.
Monika held her breath for a moment or so longer, until she thought it was safe to sigh. Then she did -
Fwom. A blue glow lit up the area above her and her heart raced. 'What is that? Is it an attack coming? Oh no, did I trigger an early boss fight again?' She hazarded a look up and saw, through the trees, an armored figure standing over her, like some kind of... predator, or perhaps a fisherman who preferred the spear over the hook.
Either way, she had a spear aiming right for her.
Monika held her breath, heart thumping in her chest as she waited for the attack as the music built up. It was unlike any other music in the game so far as it was menacing and actively trying to give off a powerful and dangerous tone. This person...was not messing around.
And then, suddenly, it was normal. Her heart still raced all the way until the music faded out. And even then she didn't move for another good five minutes.
Finally, Player came to her side. "Hey, Monika. You're… safe to move now." He whispered in his most calming and most.. supportive voice. "She left, at least this room. I promise." He smiled.
She looked up to him and finally let out that sigh of true relief. "That… I don't… I've never been so scared before!" She admitted, voice breaking a bit. She had come close to death before but.. This was new. "I wish I could hug you."
He then surprised her, hugging her himself as softer piano music began to play. Or at least, trying his best to hug her despite being intangible. She could...almost feel it. "You're okay, okay? I promise you'll be alright until we finally get out of here. Let's move on now, okay?"
She knew that she wasn't feeling anything.. but.. she smiled and rubbed her eyes, which were starting to tear up. She felt a lot better now. "Yeah, let's get going." She said, standing up and walking out of the tall grass.
And then a little heart attack hit her.
"Yo! Did yo -"
"AAH!" Monika jumped back, heart a thumping again. "Wai- you!? You gave me a heart attack!" She put a palm to her chest, not at all dramatically, to calm her beating heart.
"Sorry.." Monster Kid said, glancing downwards.
She sighed and brushed her hair out of her face while standing. "It's..okay.." She had to remember. This was a child, getting mad was a bad thing to do to a child.
Didn't mean she wasn't angry.
"I just got all excited! Did you see how Undyne was looking down here? She was so cool!" The kid said, oblivious to why she was afraid.
Forcing a smile, she replied with. "Yep, super amazing!" She said tersely. "You should go home and tell your parents about it!" She said, trying her best to be positive while also trying to get this kid to leave her be.
"Nah, they wouldn't be interested. And besides, I never get the chance to see her up close! If she's interested in you for some reason then..." He looked up at her with wide eyes and Monika immediately knew she wasn't refusing this kid. "I wanna come with you!"
Despite her sensible nature screaming at her to, y'know, not take the kid with her on a dangerous mission like this, she couldn't say no to a look like that. This kid was as bad as Sayori... "Fine you can come with but you have to stay quiet and safe. I don't want to be responsible if you hurt yourself, okay?" She asked.
Monster Kid nodded. "Yeah totally, I gotcha dude!" He then sped ahead and away from them.
"Wait that's the opposite of...what..." She sighed and shook her head. "He'll be okay, right?" She asked Player, glancing over at him.
He nodded. "Yeah Undyne won't hurt him or anything, and he's usually pretty safe in the main game." Player explained.
She sighed in relief and they moved to the next room. Monika took a look at a sign and made a note of the fact that four Bridge Seeds in water will make a bridge. She then used this knowledge to make a bridge for herself. Then she paused. "Wait how did Monster Kid do this without arms?" She asked. "If you say magic again I am going to have questions."
Player paused. "..." He paused again. "...I.." He struggled for an answer. "Yeah I have no idea." He admitted. "Unless the kid has telekinesis then he-"
Player was cut off as Monika's Soul popped out and Aaron flexed his way in. "Oh good, a fight you should deal with that." Player seemed relieved to not have to try to figure out a reason for that inconsistency.
Monika sighed. "I'll have questions later, for now Check!"
Player hit the Check button and. "24 AT and 12 DF. Smells like an underwater barnyard."
"Check all you want." Aaron winks and flexes again, and Monika has to jump and float to avoid being hit by literal flexing muscles. Of course, since these were below her she did get flexed on once or twice, dealing a decent amount of damage. Thankfully though the attack was absorbed by her jacket for the most part.
"You know attacking is the opposite way to get a girl to like you." She remarked, before turning to Player. "Options?"
"Shoo or Flex."
Monika decides to shoo him. "Go away, shoo, your flexing and winks make me...uncomfortable," she said honestly.
Aaron makes a face at being shooed but her comment about the winks seems to strike a nerve. He agrees to leave and gives her 30 gold for the troubles.
Monika sighs. "I hope there isn't a ton like him." She remarks, and she and Player head off as she eats her Unicycle to heal up.
They toy around with the Bridge Seeds before moving on and getting a.. call? "Hello?"
"HELLO FRIEND!" Papyrus greeted.
Monika blinked. She had gotten his number earlier but she hadn't given hers.. "How did you get this number?" She asked him in confusion.
"EASY! I SIMPLY CALLED EVERY NUMBER SEQUENTIALLY UNTIL I FOUND YOURS!" Papyrus replied.
She blinked again but decided to roll with it as they walked to the next room. "What's up?
"I HAD A QUESTION FOR A FRIEND. WHAT ARE YOU WEARING RIGHT NOW? MY FRIEND SAID YOU WERE WEARING A JACKET. IS THAT TRUE..?" He asked.
Monika chuckled. "You saw me earlier, that hasn't changed since we hung out I promise." She pulled the sides of the Jacket tighter to her body, and she felt warmth flow through her chest again. Passion.
"RIGHT, OF COURSE. THANK YOU FRIEND. WINK WINK!" He then hung up
Monika shook her head. "This place is so.. funny!" She laughs a bit, imagining Papyrus going through every number in the Underground until he finally got hers.
"I thought you might like it eventually." Player winked. "And Moni, we've only just started getting to know these guys."
She smiled at that. Maybe she could learn to love it here.
They enter the next room and Monika listens to the echo flowers speak of how long ago, Monsters would come to this room to make wishes. How, even now people still make wishes that, if they believed hard enough, would come true.
Monika wasn't one for superstitions like that but... She looked up to the crystals Monsters would wish on. 'I wish.. I wish with all my heart and Soul that me and Player one day will have our true happy ending.' She almost gleamed with the hope that her wish would be answered. She then chuckled at herself. 'Wishes like that won't just happen. I have to work for it.' And yet she looked up to the Crystals once more before they left the room.
Her Soul, brightened Pink, shone to the Crystals.
And the Crystals... Shined back.
*You are filled with Passion.
Author's note: Sorry I'm cutting it here. I felt like that was a really good ending point for this chapter, short as it is.
...And I apologize for the shortness and extreme lateness. You know me, I really shouldn't make promises anymore. But I finally figured out enough of my life. I think I can confidently say that I'm back. Expect monthly MoniTale updates now at the very least.
I wanted to get this chapter out on her birthday so.. here we are, that's why I decided to cut it before much of interest happened. Next time though we'll go through the TeMs and Undyne and out to Hotlands, and then we'll catch up with Frisk and the Girls.
For now though.. REVIEWS!
ZombieSlayers: Can't wait for the next chapter
Me: Haha...sorry.
Jack54311: I was so excited to see this updated, I chose to read it ahead of the other stories that I need to catch up on. Looking forward to the next chapter! Your comments on Gaster and Chara have me wondering if perhaps they aren't the actual villains in this story that I thought they might be. Or if there will actually be any quote unquote bad guys. Definitely looking forward to finding out!
Me: And I hope you're still here, I would hate to lose a fan so early into the plot. As for Chara and Gaster...well.. Heh heh heh. You'll have to wait and see about them, they will both play really interesting parts assuming I get to tell the whole story, including a Season 2 as well as Project Underground. You won't be disappointed, I can assure that.
AliceCullen3: LOVE IT!
Me: And I LOVE YOU! You are always here leaving a review and I want to say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you very much!
BlueAmnesiac101: is Monika's implied lack of reset ability a consequence of jef not being in
oops. sorry for my previous comment. i use mobile ffn. my phone slipped out of my hands as I wrote it, so yeah. anyways to restate what I was trying to say is it possible that Monika's soul is the reason why it is implied she doesnt have the ability to reset or save/load or is it that she isnt native to the Undertale world or...?
Me: Her Soul trait is the culprit, good eye. If you'll notice she has a different power than Frisk. As to what that power is you just need to pay attention to the times when she becomes filled with Passion.
UniqueAccountName: Eh, I can understand your reasoning for Monika Vs. Toriel I suppose, but I still disagree with that last part. No UT characters are omnipotent or nigh-omnipotent, although you could make an argument for the Annoying Dog since it's literally a representation/avatar of Toby Fox, but eh, the views on Annoying Dogs power are split, but if you didn't know or don't remember, the Annoying Dog actually created the game with a mere bark, when you think about it, that's an absolutely ridiculous feat, considering the fact that Undertale contains an entire multiverse, with very powerful hax as well as characters that can destroy said multiverse. Anyways, Sans, Omega Flowey, and Asriel do have hax, not sure what you count as hax, but for me, hax is basically just a unique ability that isn't just purely strength, speed, durability etc., for example, Sans has the ability to either teleport or stop time (not everyone agrees on either or, but most people think he teleports, I think he can do both), I count that as hax, everyone in Undertale has hax actually, as everyone in Undertale has soul manipulation. Anyways, I'd prefer not to go in depth about this just for a "review", so if you actually wanna talk about the strength of Undertale characters, I'd prefer moving this to PM's. Although I wanna mention that the strongest UT characters are Gaster (isn't actually strong in terms of attack potency, but overall, most fictional characters in general can't beat him), Frisk with high DT (when amped by DT enough, they gain regeneration even capable of allowing them to regenerate after their body and soul are destroyed by God Asriel, and are also capable of tanking attacks from God Asriel who is a multiversal being), Chara Post-Genocide/Absolute (annihilated everything in the game via a single strike, some people believe it was only the timeline they were in, which is a universal feat, but it was most likely the entire multiverse), Omega Flowey (was implied to be stronger than Chara, and also was capable of casually creating and destroying timelines in his fight), God Asriel (dwarfs his Omega Flowey counterpart by a ridiculous margin, was so strong that in his second form, his mere presence immobilized the DT amped Frisk, even stripping them of the abilities to Hope or Dream, leaving them only with the ability to Struggle), and the Annoying Dog (created the game with a single bark, can freely move around in an empty, timeless void, is unable to be removed from the files, can survive even after a game crash without any problems, and is just found sleeping in a void as if nothing happened, views the games characters as fictional entities, which some argue puts him on an infinite level above them, and is also a representation of the games creator, Toby Fox).
Me: I... I don't feel like debating power levels at the moment so I'll just let you have this one.
Though it is my opinion that Asriel and Omega Flowey are close to being to actually being Omnipotent.
Le Lets Play: Relly Good
Me: Thanks!
hitthepin: This is the first fanfic that I ever read, and thank God that it was. I just want to say that this served as a great source of inspiration for me. It's brilliant and well-written. Now, PLEASE, don't leave us... uh... hanging?
Me: I'm glad that I got to be your first. And don't worry. Even if I'm 60 and working on it still, I will not stop MoniTale, nothing will stop my Passion short of me literally dying.
RyTheGachaFox: Wow, this is amazing! I absolutely love it! Keep writing! Or don't if your done with it... um... but yeah! This was amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Me: I'm glad you like it so much! And I will continue to write until I am done or until I can write no more!.
SpiritLink112: I- that is not my interpretation of Yuri at all... But um, okay I guess...
If you ever continue to update this story I will read it for sure! I see that last updated date though...
Me: How do you interpret her? I imagined it was a sexual thing since there's not much indication that she was depressed depressed like Sayori but I am open to other interpretations
Also me: Ask for an update and ye shall receive.
...months later.
Festivia: Looking forward to the next chapters cause I really love how Monika is learning about how to care about others well other than Player I mean hehe.. and learning about MERCY. I'm kinda hoping to see more Sans interacting with Monika cause it's funny and fun Also curious about if Monika can RESET cause when Monika will finally face Undyne in battle it won't be easy... hopefully Player will protect her
Me: Oh... you'll see that battle next time we meet. And it will not be easy one bit.
That said, I am glad to see that you like the direction of her character arc, I'm building to her learning MERCY ever so slowly but there are hiccups that get in the way that I plan to show.
Mem285: if this chapter is saying what I think it's saying is that undertale, where they are, is real, and there could also be a possibility of au's existing... meaning... OH NOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Me: OH YESSSSSSSS
JustChar:
I like the Chara thing in the end, the player was the one that did the Genocide route, not Frisk or Chara, she just showed then their actions have consequences
Aye, another Monika fan, she's an interesting character
Me: One, Monika best girl. Two, I'm glad you like my interpretation of Chara, now to see how this will play out over the course of the story.
Now then, that all said, Until Next Time True Readers!
Editor's note - Natsuki best girl
Author's reply- I'll allow it.
