When Judy learned that Chief Bogo collected coins she immediately called her parents and asked them to send her late Uncle Paul's rare coin collection. She knew it wouldn't be a problem. In families where siblings were counted in the hundreds, any excuse to get rid of the extra clutter was welcome.
She'd giggled slightly at his expression when she'd said the collection was his to keep, and had imparted a piece of wisdom Uncle Paul had given her when she was still a kitten. "The things we're passionate about shouldn't ever be locked away – they deserve to be seen and treasured and one day passed on to someone who can appreciate their value."
Then she'd bounced away, leaving an utterly speechless buffalo in her wake.

After nearly forty years of service in the ZPD, twenty as Chief of Precinct One, Adrian Bogo was being promoted to Police Commissioner. To no one's surprise, he'd tapped Captain Judy Wilde (nee Hopps) to take over his spot in the busiest district in town. During her own fifteen years with the ZPD, Hopps had made quite the name for both herself, and all small mammals. Since her very first case, which had led to the arrest of not one but two Mayors, Judy Wilde had repeatedly proven herself to be a force of nature that you underestimated at your own risk. Alongside Nick Wilde - her partner, husband, and most recently fellow Captain - they had spent their career making sure that the drug rings, mammal trafficking operations, and the vicious gangs that plagued Zootopia learned that lesson the hard way.
Now that she would be taking over as Precinct One's Chief, they both knew their partnership would become a little more abstract. But with Precinct One's SWAT detachment under his command, she knew that he'd always be there to watch her back...although she was looking forward to outranking him.
Despite their reputation for being able to solve nearly any crime put before them, Judy and Nick were most proud of their outreach programs. They relished any opportunity they got to visit schools, community centers, veteran's hospitals, or what have you. She never lost her enthusiastic 'make the world a better place' attitude and he never got tired of showing the world just what a fox could do, both embracing every opportunity to be more than society ever thought they could.
Chief Bogo entered the bullpen to a much louder reception than usual. Today would be his last briefing before assuming the duties of Commissioner, which may have been why he allowed the ruckus and loud banging that accompanied his entrance to go on a bit longer than usual. Judy and Nick added as much noise as their smaller paws could managed while seated in their customary front row chair.
"Alright SHUT IT!" He bellowed, managing to get everyone back under control.
The Cape Buffalo took a moment to look around the room. Nearly all of the mammals who'd been there for his tenure as chief had moved on. Some had been promoted or moved on to other districts, others had simply retired. There were still some familiar faces, though. Frank Wolford was Nick's second-in-command of SWAT, Francine Pennington, now a Lt. was the head of Vice. One very obvious absence was Jerry McHorn – the rhino was now Chief of Precinct Two in Savanna Central - but his younger sister Jenny was present. She partnered with Terry Fangmeyer who had refused promotion after promotion saying she simply wanted to be a beat cop.
He looked also to the recent additions which included Raymond Toddson, a fox who lacked Nick's snark but had the same charm. Sitting next to the gray fox was the ZPD's newest 'small' mammal, Victoria Wilde. Nick and Judy had adopted the skunk when she was ten years old, and today would be her first day at Precinct One. Though she'd been on the force a year, Bogo had approved her transfer from Tundratown as a favor to Judy so that she could keep a closer eye on her daughter.
Bogo cleared his throat. "I have three things on the docket today. First, we have another Wilde in the room, hopefully she takes after her mother more than her father."
Loud laughter echoed around the room as Wolford gave Nick a playful head ruffle from his seat next to the Captain. Despite his best attempt to look offended, Nick couldn't hide his own pride at having his daughter join Precinct One.
"Second, as you all know this will be my last briefing. I would like to take this time to formally introduce to you the new Chief of Precinct One, Captain Judy Wilde."
More applause and loud cheers greeted the doe as she stood up on the table in front of her chair and took a small bow.
"I'll be sure to get you a chair to stand on so you can properly address the troops, as it were..."
Judy smiled up at her boss, "Not necessary, I'll just stand on the podium."
"Whatever, I don't care." Bogo's signature line was accompanied by several snickers from around the room.
"Lastly, I just want to take a moment to let you all know how proud I am of all of you, and what an honor it has been to serve with you. Captain Wilde? Give out the assignments."
Just as she'd said she would, Judy hopped onto the podium and took the folder from Adrian's hoof, but not before wrapping herself around his arm in a death-lock of a hug. "We're all going to miss you Chief." She said, looking up at her boss with tears threatening to fall from her amethyst eyes.
Bogo had to swallow a couple of times before he could regain enough composure to answer her, "I... Thank you. Now, carry on." He tried to maintain a stoic facade, but Judy caught the slight upturn of her boss's lip as she took her place behind the mic.
"Alright, TAC members, report to Captain Wilde for your assignments. Fangmeyer, Catalina, Sahara square patrol. Pennington, Toddson, Regina, continue your undercover assignment in the Meadowlands. Hornson, McHorn, and Howlton, your usual patrols please. And finally, Officer Wilde – Parking duty."
"But... Mom! I mean... Chief..."
Judy slammed her hind paw down on the podium making nearly everyone in the room jump, "You want to make it a week's worth? Call me Mom ONE MORE TIME."
Judy knew it was an extreme reaction, and she normally wouldn't have snapped, but she wanted to make sure that everyone in the room knew she would play no favorites when it came to her daughter. She tried to mitigate the reaction with a smile, "You know it's protocol, Officer Wilde."
Properly chastised, the skunk headed out of the room. "Fine, I'll go get the stuff from Uncle Ben." Judy's ear twitched at that comment, but she decided to let it go for now.
Another thing that had not changed was the ever-cheerful Ben Clawhauser, who was perfectly content to remain the receptionist and dispatcher for Precinct One as long as Judy would have him. She assured her favorite officer not named 'Wilde' that it just wouldn't be Precinct One without him.
Following Judy to her new office, Bogo took a seat in front of the desk. His belongings had already been moved to his new office in City Hall and the rabbit had wasted no time making the space her own. This included having a small booster installed in Adrian's old chair, which she jumped into to face him.
"Good that you've established your authority with your daughter, Wilde. But that's part of why I picked you – I know you won't play favorites. That said, do let her get a real assignment every now and again. You know Snarlov over in Tundratown gave her very high marks."
Judy smiled, "Oh, I will. But it's been your tradition that all new officers get at least one day in the Joke Mobile. Why break that?"
Bogo gave Judy a genuine smile this time. "I cannot think of anyone else who will carry on better than you, Judy."
The doe was a bit surprised at the use of her first name, but then she supposed that this was a special occasion. In fact, she had a little going away present for her departing Chief.
Adrian's amusement gave way to curiosity when Judy opened the desk drawer and retrieved a rather large velvet box with a bow on it.
"What..." he began.
"Consider this a promotion present, Chief," Noting the buffalo's hesitation, she encouraged him, "go ahead, open it," and sat back on her chair with an anticipatory smile.
The newly-minted commissioner opened the box to reveal several rows of rare coins. His eyes grew wide as he noticed some of them. There was the rare double eagle Z20 piece minted over a hundred years prior, a steel penny from the Second World War when copper was considered too valuable to waste on coins, and several foreign coins including a gold coin from Bogo's ancestral African Union home.
"Where... how did you get these?" He asked with a fair bit of wonder in his tone.
"My Uncle Paul... actually my Dad's Uncle. He served in the Great War and did a lot of traveling afterwards. No one else in the family seemed to be as interested in his coins so, I kinda inherited them. He used to tell me stories about each one. If you look in the bottom of the box, there are notes that describe each coin."
"Wilde, I don't... I don't know what to say?"
Judy's smile only increased as she walked over the desk to lay her paw on the much larger buffalo's hoof. "My Uncle always told me that things like this should be shared, that they should be out in the open, not locked away where no one can enjoy them. Each of those coins has a story to tell, and when Ben told me you collected them, I really couldn't think of a better gift for you."
Adrian smiled back at her and, as gently as he could manage, he gave the small bunny a hug. A single tear may or may not have leaked from his eye, but he'd deny it was anything other than condensation from the air conditioning if he was ever asked.
"Thank you, Judy. You never cease to surprise me." The old bull chuckled, "That seems to be something you've done since you came to work here... I know we didn't get off to the best start but..."
"Oh Adrian." She began, using his given name for perhaps the first time, "Water WAY under the bridge on that one. I'm just glad to have found something to give you that you will cherish. You have been an inspiration to me... To Nick... To all of us." She tried but failed to contain the tears of pride streaming down her face... "I know I'll see you... during all those boring All Precinct meetings but... I will miss you, too."
Adrian gave her another gentle hug, then stood up, closing the box with reverence and tucking it under one arm. Opening the door to his former office for perhaps the last time, turned back and gave Judy a crisp salute. "Carry on, Chief Wilde."
Judy stood atop the desk and returned the salute, "Stay safe, Commissioner Bogo."
Smiling, the cape buffalo left for his new office, eagerly anticipating the perusal of his gift.

END
Note from Mr. Escher – So, I used to collect coins as a kid, and I always wondered about the stories for each one... I hope I've given a small taste of that here – though this was more just a fluff piece to go into 40 Glimpses.
Note from Mr. Crow – My heartfelt thanks to Mr. Escher for his contribution to my anthology. I'd been scratching my head over this chapter for I don't know how long, puzzling over a topic I actually knew precious little about. It was a big relief when he volunteered to bring his own experience to the table.
There's only one Glimpse left (Baby) before the big closing act.
