The fall is just as violent as the first. The two teenagers who died the first time are alive and well this time, having respected Clarke's order not to detach themselves. The dropship stabilizes. The teenagers are excited and eager to undo their seatbelts and discover their new home. Exhilaration runs through the air, despite a little tension on the part of those who don't remember.
- You want to do the honors one more time, O?
She nods and Bellamy opens the door.
- We're back bitch. she says, stepping out onto the cool grass.
Bellamy looks at her, feeling a little like his sister again. She'll never be the same, of course, but he hopes this time it'll go better. For Octavia and Lincoln, Clarke and Lexa, Jasper and Maïa. He hopes to be able to spoil his nephew soon, to see who he'll look like the most, to see him grow up and to see Octavia have the family she so desires. Despite all the hardships that await them, he truly hopes that this time they'll do better. The rest of the pennies exit, reassured that they haven't been killed by the air, which could have been toxic. Those who remember watch the teenagers in awe and wonder at the new life opening up to them. Octavia turns away from them to speak with Bellamy.
- I have to find Lincoln.
- I know, go on.
He hugs her tightly before letting her go, knowing that she can ensure his safety and that this moment should be theirs alone.
- I'm surprised you let her go alone, you overprotective big Murphy, approaching Bellamy from behind.
- What do you want, things change the replies with a smile, and a friendly tap on his shoulder. He remembers the Murphy of the early days and is relieved to have the new Murphy by his side.
He and Clarke quickly take charge. They explain to the teenagers that they need to tidy up the dropship so they can sleep in it organize groups to fetch water and edible berries, and Clarke takes charge of one group, leaving camp management to Bellamy.
Despite the fact that they've taken rations this time, neither of them wants to risk running out of food.
Octavia runs through the forest, knowing the way by heart, even after all these years. Her heart skips a beat with each new stride she takes, through trees and over rocks. Guided by instinct and the love that drives her towards the man of her life. She doesn't have time to get to the cave before he finds her. He hasn't changed, which is to be expected since they're back in the same bodies as the first time. He recognizes her, she sees it in his eyes. Even if one side of her wanted to start again, that he wasn't her memories. She's relieved, she needs him, she needs Lincoln, who stayed by her side when she couldn't cope. She throws herself into his arms, he holds her like never before. His hand caresses her hair.
- I missed you so much. she tells him, tears in her eyes. Don't leave me again.
- I promise you, O, I'll come back to you every time. Lincoln murmurs, his voice filled with love and promise.
He wraps both hands around her face and looks into her eyes. If her looks are the same, she has this gleam of sadness in her eyes and a hint of despair, the last time he saw this sadness was when they lost their child. He gently strokes her hair, cradling her in his arms.
- So much has happened. It was hard without said, clinging to him tighter, as if afraid he might disappear again.
- I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you.
- I've seen it all.
Lincoln exhales a long breath. He wishes she hadn't witnessed this.
- I asked Marcus to pull you away, I didn't want you there.
- He did, but I regained consciousness. I... I killed Pike. she admits to him.
- Blood shouldn't always have blood.
- Maybe not, but he deserved it. He won't come down. she said, relieved to tell him.
- Good. Indra remembers, the commander remembers and Roan remembers. They're the only ones.
- Where's Indra?
- She decided to meet Clarke while they went to get water. She'll see you afterwards, she wanted to give us some time to ourselves.
- That's really nice of her.
She points to the cave. He smiles, and leads her down into the heart of their refuge. He's already lit a fire and set up some blankets. Octavia sees the blanket bed, smiles and throws herself into his arms, running her hands behind his neck to pull him closer to her. She kisses him more and more passionately, Lincoln stops her, even though he wants to too.
- Wait O, we don't have to.
- I want to. I've wanted to for years. I need you, Lincoln.
Lincoln tenderly caresses her cheek, runs his hand over the back of her neck and pulls her close to kiss him.
- We should be careful. The memory of Octavia's miscarriage and distress hits him like a boomerang.
Octavia freezes, an "o" forming on her lips.
- No need, Abby gave me a contraceptive injection. she tells him, placing her hands on his chest. Lincoln looks at her questioningly. I can't get pregnant for the next 3 months. After that it'll be possible, well if... if you want to. She fidgets with her hands, anxious, and looks down when she tells him, still feeling ashamed and still feeling guilty about her miscarriages.
Lincoln lifts her chin so her eyes meet his.
- Of course I want to, but I don't want you to feel obliged.
Octavia hadn't expected to have to have this conversation at the time of their reunion, anguish rising inside her; she knows Lincoln loves her and has always supported her, but the memory is still painful.
- I want to, Lincoln. I want to have a child with you. She sits on the covers and waits for him to do the same. Abby examined me. Lincoln nods. She says everything's fine. The injection will prevent pregnancy and miscarriage. She almost says the former, but holds back just in time. It's still too early to tell him about their son, she's afraid of hurting him, and she can't yet manage her emotions about the loss. She says it was probably due to a genetic problem or malformation.
- Radiation often causes malformations and miscarriages. I told you then and I'm telling you now it wasn't your fault. he says, looking into her eyes and stroking her cheek. I love you O, I don't blame you, stop feeling guilty. It's painful but unfortunately it happens.
- I know and I'm trying. I just want to have a healthy baby. I can't go through this again.
She knows she won't survive the loss of another child or Lincoln. It broke her the first time, it will destroy her if it happens again. Lincoln knows it, he feels it, she's different, she has an aura of grief around her that won't go away. He hugs her, hoping her touch will make her feel better. When they lost their baby, he withstood the shock, grieving silently to support Octavia and lift her out of her depression. It's still a painful memory, although he knows it's something that happens regularly in different clans. He can only hope that all will go well next time. He's sure Octavia will make an extraordinary mother.
They lie down, Octavia resting her head on Lincoln's chest. She draws circles on his chest, this simple little gesture soothes him. The desire for him resurfaces, and she straddles Lincoln and starts tracing kisses on his body. They make love, Lincoln taking his time, showering her with tenderness, making sure she's comfortable, he knows her by heart and knows how to sweep her off her feet. When they're done, it's a tangle of limbs and blankets.
- How did it go? Was it good? Lincoln asks. It was their first time, but not quite at the same time. He wants to make sure she feels good.
- It was fine. she says, smiling.
They remain entwined for a long moment. Night falls and Octavia has to get back to camp, but she doesn't want to. Her brother and Clarke will understand, but for now she needs to be close to him.
Despite Lincoln's comfort, the nightmares don't let her rest. As she struggles with her dreams, Lincoln gently strokes her shoulder.
- O, wake up.
When she finally opens her eyes, her gaze passes over everything around her, and when she comes upon Lincoln, she doesn't know where she is or if she's still dreaming.
- I'm here O, everything's fine.
- Thank you. She snuggles into his arms.
- Do you want to talk about it?
She nods and lies back against the warm body of the man she loves. The rest of the night is quieter. She hoped that being back here, close to Lincoln, would ease her nightmares, but it will take time to let go of all the bad memories.
The sun floods the cave with light. Octavia shields her eyes from the assault. She's out of practice. Lincoln is rekindling the fire.
- Hey, how's it going? he asks, coming back to lie next to her.
- I'm doing fine. When we got back to the Ark, you were the first thing on my mind, and I couldn't wait to be back in your arms. She pulls him in for a kiss, wishing she could stay here forever, but it's time for her to go home. I've got to get back to camp, Bell's waiting for me.
- I'll take you home.
They get dressed and pack up. Lincoln helps Octavia out of the cave, and they head for the dropship. Bellamy is giving orders to some of the 100, Clarke is talking with Miller and Murphy. Bellamy sees his sister and Lincoln arrive. He comes to meet them, hugs his sister and extends his hand to Lincoln. Lincoln takes it.
- I'm glad to see you again. And I'm sorry, for everything. Bellamy says.
- What did Indra tell you?
- The village agrees to help us. Anya doesn't remember, she's more reserved than Indra but she trusts him. Clarke is going to Polis to see Lexa. We'll come up with a plan for the Mountain and then we'll see. According to Indra, Roan is planning to take the throne from Nia.
Octavia nods.
- I should get back to the village. Lincoln said to Octavia.
- Be careful.
- Always. He kisses her, hugs her and leaves.
- How did the 100 take finding out we weren't alone? Octavia asks Bellamy.
- They were worried at first, but we made them understand that if they respect the customs, everything will be fine. How did it go for you? Not the intimate stuff. Bellamy adds hurriedly.
- It was great, it did me a lot of good to be with him.
- Did you have a chat? His brother hesitates.
- Not what you think, it's too early. We've only just met, and I don't want to spoil our reunion.
Bellamy nods, directing her towards the fire. Clarke comes over to give her a hug when she spots him. They organize the next few days, deciding which groups will go hunting and which will go out on the water.
The first three weeks go relatively better than the first. Jasper and Monty set about making moonlight in case of medical need. They stock up on water, food and medicinal herbs. Indra and Lincoln come to camp and explain their customs to the newcomers. They teach them how to survive and how to fight, not wanting them to be helpless the day the Mountain attacks, or Azgeda. Most of the teenagers get the hang of it fairly quickly, some wanting to play the rebel, but Bellamy quickly pulls them back into line, which makes him smile gently, when he remembers that in their first life he was the first to rebel. Trikru provides them with animal skins until they become more self-sufficient. Octavia takes charge of a hunting party. Harper takes charge of camp security alongside Miller. Bellamy and Clarke coordinate the rest, and when Clarke isn't in Polis with Lexa, Bellamy is in charge of the camp. Despite all the measures and warnings, they still suffer some losses in the acid this time Wells survives, Charlotte is constantly by Clarke's side when she's at camp, helping her in the infirmary set up in the dropship. Jasper is not harpooned and Finn is not poisoned. Murphy is not excluded from the camp, but decides to go in search of Emori, knowing where to find her. No one objects. Raven lands safely, radio still working. Clarke immediately checks on her mother. Abby confirms that everything is going as she and Kane wish. Jaha has been deposed, and Kane is the new chancellor. Diana and her conspirators have been floated, avoiding the attack, as has Pike. This news comes as a relief to Octavia, who has resumed her position as second-in-command to Indra, with Lincoln serving as her tutor. The lovers slip away whenever they can, stealing every minute their new luck gives them.
In Polis, Lexa talks to the ambassadors to come up with a battle plan against the Mountain, with Clarke and Indra joining her when they're in the capital. Roan rallies to the commander's side, determined to regain control of his clan.
Bellamy, Clarke and Monty hope to do things differently this time, not sacrificing innocent lives if at all possible. Even so, they're ready to do what needs to be done to ensure the safety of their people and the alliance. Jasper has already offered to donate bone marrow, as has Harper and a few other teenagers when Clarke mentioned it.
If all goes well, the Ark should descend tomorrow. Clarke can't wait to see her mother again. Teenagers with living parents are also eager to be reunited.
Now that night has fallen for several hours, Lincoln and Octavia are walking in the forest to look at the luminescent butterflies. Lincoln wants to talk to Octavia about what's bothering her; he senses that there's something she's not telling him. He takes her hand and pulls her closer to him.
- O, is everything all right?
- Yes, why?
- You seem lost in thought at times, and sad.
Octavia sits down in front of the butterfly rock and beckons him to come with her.
- A lot happened after you died. A lot of bad things.
He sits behind her to hold her, grabs her hand and squeezes it to encourage her to go on.
- We defeated Allie, I killed Pike, Roan became king. For a while I was Kane's personal guard. Then we heard that Praimfaya was coming. The wave of death. I fought at the conclave and won. I wanted everyone to have a chance, so I let 100 people from each clan into the bunker. It was difficult, but nothing compared to what happened in the 4th year. The protein plants died. Tears begin to fall, but she forces herself to continue. A decision had to be made. That's when I created the fighting pits, and those who were against me ended up in them. Opponents would fight to the death, then we... would eat them. she finally said, wiping away her tears. It was horrible, but there was no other way. I became Bloodreina, a monster, I couldn't feel anything.
Lincoln wraps his arms around her to comfort her.
- You did what you had to do to save your people.
Octavia tells him about everything else, Kane in the pits, his betrayal, the arrival of Dyoza and the rest of the crew, their liberation from the bunker, the war, the battle in the gorge, then the destroyed planet, the new planet, her years with Dyoza and Hope, and the great war. She tells him everything, the only thing she still hides from him is the loss of their son.
- I understand O, I love you no matter what.
- You won't say that when you know the rest.
He turns her chin so that she's facing him, and caresses her gently, wanting to encourage her without forcing her.
- You don't have to talk about it now, there's time.
- You need to know. If we're going to start a family, you need to know what happened.
Lincoln nods, aware that what he's about to hear will be even more personal than what he's just learned. Octavia takes a deep breath, it's now or never.
- A few weeks after your death, I found out I was pregnant. I didn't want to be left out when so much shit was going on. Everything went well, according to the healer, there were no problems. The weeks went by without a hitch. And then one day. She sniffs. One day it went wrong. Echo and I were fighting on a cliff. She got the better of me, hit me in the abdomen with her sword and I fell off the cliff. I managed to get out of the water and find Helios. He took me back to Arkadia. After that, it's all a bit hazy. When I woke up, Clarke told me she'd had to operate. The tears are flowing freely now. Without even having to say it, Lincoln understands what she's getting at. She told me the baby didn't make it. It was so horrible, you had just died and our baby was gone too. I was five months pregnant, and I'd been feeling him move for a few weeks. Even though I missed you every day, I knew I'd see you in our child. I lost it afterwards.
She collapses completely now, Lincoln cradles her gently, crying too.
- I'm sorry, so sorry you had to go through that. I wish I could have been there for you.
- He was a boy. she says in a whisper.
They're both crying, unable to stop their tears from flowing at this injustice.
- It's okay, O. I'm here now. One step at a time.
- I just want everything to go right this time.
- Nothing's ever safe, but now that things are different, what happened on the cliff won't happen.
- Do you still want to have a baby with me, despite everything you've just learned?
- Always. I want to be there for you and support you every step of the way. I want to see your belly round out and see you holding our son in your arms. He gives her a long look and continues. We'll be careful and make sure everything goes well for you and the baby.
She smiles at him and presses herself tighter against his chest, grateful to have him in her life, for his support, his strength, his love for her despite what he's just learned.
- My injection will wear off in two months.
- Good. The Ark will be down, Abby will be there if you need her. The mountain will no longer be a threat.
- But Praimfaya will always be there.
- We'll find a solution then.
Octavia smiles.
- Bell said the same thing.
She reaches into her bag and pulls out Babin. She shows it to Lincoln.
- I couldn't take him the first time. She shrugs. Bellamy told me it would be a good idea to have it for the baby. I used to have it with me all the time when my mom and Bell weren't around. He was the one I talked to most often and the one who comforted me.
- I'm sure our child will be happy to have him. He waits a moment before continuing. You know you can talk to me, it was our child O, we'll face it together.
- It's so strange, mourning a child who may be born in a few months. At times I can't sort out everything I'm feeling. He's gone and maybe he'll come into the world if everything goes well. But I'm not sure I'll ever forget the pain of losing him.
Lincoln understands her; their situation is so unprecedented that even he is sometimes lost in his feelings, but he wants to be sure that she still has hope that this little being will come into the world.
- He will be born, our son will live and you will hold him in your arms. No matter what must be done for that. I won't let anyone hurt you. We're not asking you to forget how you feel, your pain and memories won't go away, but I'm sure it will subside when he's with us. In the meantime, we have to accept what has happened and find the strength to believe that this second chance will allow us to see our son grow and flourish. Surrounded by people who love him and in safety.
She nods, desperately wanting it to be true, while it's still nestled in Lincoln's chest, Babin against her.
- I'm afraid I'm not a good mother, but my mother wasn't the most loving. In fact, I don't think she loved me very much. she says in a whisper. I couldn't protect him the first time, and I'm afraid I'll make the same mistakes again.
Lincoln kisses her before answering.
- I'm sorry about your mother. But I know you'll be a loving and protective mother to our child. You must accept that what happened was not your fault.
They spend the night in a nearby cave. Octavia feels a weight lifted from her chest. It doesn't make the loss of her baby any easier, but sharing her grief with Lincoln, and looking forward to a better future, does help.
Meanwhile on the Ark.
Abby is giving orders to the guards in the room to select the equipment that will go with them to Earth. She wants to make sure it's well protected.
- We're taking this too. she says, indicating an incubator to one of the guards.
Kane enters the infirmary, surprised to discover that several medical items for pregnancy and infancy are among the equipment leaving with them.
- I don't think this will be of any use, Abby. There's no point in taking things that won't be of any use, we've got to take the bare minimum and not encumber ourselves. Leave it there. he orders the guard holding the incubator. The rest of the baby equipment too.
- No, it goes down with us.
- We don't need it. Kane snarls, heading for the items to take them out of the infirmary.
- I said take them. Leave it there. I'm the chief medical officer, I decide what comes and what doesn't.
- This is ridiculous, Abby.
He orders the guard to leave, who immediately complies, not wanting to find himself in the middle of the conflict.
- There have been no pregnancies or births in the time we've been on Earth. This material will clutter us up.
- You don't know that, Kane. Shouts Abby
He steps back, seeing Abby angry is not a situation he enjoys very much. Since their return to the Ark with their memories, they've stuck together to make sure the descent goes better than the first time. The people who caused them problems in the past have been floated away. They redefined the descent groups to ensure that Kane's mother and Callie, his ex-wife, survived. He doesn't understand her obstinacy in wanting to lower useless equipment. He turns the problem over in his head. If Abby reacts like this, it must be about Clarke.
- It's Clarke, is it about her?
Abby is surprised that he immediately thinks of Clarke. She nods.
- Raven?
- No, Kane, it's not about Clarke or Raven.
- Who then? He can only think of one other person who might fit the bill. Octavia? he asks.
- I can't tell you, I don't want to break her trust.
- Oh, please, Abby. If you don't tell me what's going on, I can't help you. He says louder than he means to. I guess it didn't end well. he continues, his tone of voice lower.
Abby blows out her breath, putting away the material to keep her hands busy.
- No, it didn't. The situation is complicated, maybe she'll decide to talk to you about it.
- She hates me, Abby. I don't know if our relationship can overcome this.
- Then maybe what I'm about to tell you will. Sit down. she says, showing him her desk and the two chairs. I ran a genetic analysis on Octavia's blood.
- She's sick. Kane asks immediately.
- No, she's fine. But there's a specific gene in her DNA. There are only three people on the Ark with this gene. Octavia, your mother and you.
- Are you telling me that...
- Octavia is your daughter.
- Holy shit. Kane replies, running a hand over his face.
Abby waits for him to explain.
- I slept with Aurora only once. I never thought Octavia could be my daughter. He exhales a long breath. Callie and I were going through a rough patch. That night we had another fight. I'd had enough and left the cabin. I went to the bar and drank a lot. Aurora approached me, she was nice and we got on well. We went to her cabin and had sex. I left before she woke up. We never had any further contact. If I had known, I would have used my statue to raise the baby.
- Now it's up to you whether you want to tell her or not.
- I'm not sure that's a good idea.
- Why wouldn't it be? If we're lucky enough to do better this time, the same goes for you two. I know the situation after the bunker was really complicated, but you're lucky to have a relationship with your daughter.
- What happened to her? Kane asks again, not really expecting an answer from Abby. She's my daughter and she's a minor, Abby, so I have a right to know, don't I? She had a miscarriage, didn't she? He has tears in his eyes now.
Abby's thinking. She's tired. And despite doctor-patient confidentiality, Kane isn't wrong-it's his daughter. Octavia will need all the support she can get.
- Yes. Octavia got pregnant twice. Unfortunately, she lost the babies both times. The first time was just before we took the mountain. The second time was after Lincoln's death, when Echo stabbed her. Abby replies, her voice full of emotion.
Kane remains silent for a moment, absorbing Abby's revelations. He's sad for Octavia, and understands a little better what happened in the bunker. He also blames himself: she was with him all the time in Polis and he never realized she was pregnant. Now he understands why Abby took the baby equipment. The new father in him is grateful.
- I want to make sure I can step in if something goes wrong. No matter what happened between us in our first life.
- Will it happen again? asks Kane, worried that his daughter will go through the same ordeal again.
- No, not the first one anyway, and as for the second, without Echo's intervention there's no reason to believe that the pregnancy wouldn't have been carried to term. So if we can change this event, we'll be fine.
- Okay, that's... that's good, I pauses and everything that's happened, I'm going to tell I'm her has a right to know, no matter what she does with that information. I want the chance to be there for her if she needs and wants , grandpa has a nice ring to it.
Abby laughs at this reflection.
- I'm glad to see you're taking your new fatherhood well.
- Life is unpredictable, and adaptation is the key. I wish I'd known beforehand and been able to take her with me, even though it might have meant the end of my marriage to Callie. At least she wouldn't have had to hide for all those years.
- But Bellamy wouldn't have raised her. Abby interrupts.
- That's true, and it's partly thanks to him that she is what she is today, but I would have liked to have been part of her life.
- Now you can, it's up to you to take the first step.
- Thank you, Abby. For telling me she's my daughter and for taking care of her.
- We all deserve a second chance. I wish she'd felt confident enough with me to come and see me when it happened. It couldn't have been easy going through this alone. She waits a moment, then resumes. We were responsible too, Kane. We helped create Bloodreina.
- I know we did. Kane replies. It was easier to put it all on her and then blame her, without taking responsibility. For a former council member and chancellor, that's pretty lousy.
- The kids did better than we did. We should have listened to them and trusted them more. Says Abby, reflecting on the decisions they made in their first life.
Kane is silent, lost in thought, as he stares at a point behind Abby, at which point the revelation hits him square in the face.
- I killed my daughter's mother. It's disturbing to say it out loud. Aurora is just one of the many people he floated. But she was the mother of his daughter and he didn't know.
- You didn't know. Abby replies, even though she suspects it won't help her.
- It doesn't make any difference. I'm the one who pushed the button and made Octavia and Bellamy orphans.
- The kids never talk about her.
- She was a prostitute. Abby gives her a look that's half shocked and half questioning. This revelation takes her by surprise. Many of the guards paid for her services. I didn't know why, but now it's all clear. I guess she was trying to get extra rations and information on inspections. If only I'd known.
- Kane, you can't blame yourself for something you didn't know.
- She could have told me, before I pushed the button. She should have.
- You don't know what she was thinking.
- Or she didn't know. Aurora liked men a lot, long before Octavia was born.
Abby huffs, she always suspected that Bellamy and Octavia's childhood couldn't have been easy, but she was far from imagining that Aurora with that kind of activity, even if the mother in her understood her, she too would have done anything for Clarke.
The revelation of his paternity upset Kane more than he was willing to tell Abby. He never imagined himself as a father, even during his marriage to Callie. Callie wanted to become a mother, but Kane never felt the desire or the need to have a child. And now she's here, she's 16 and she probably hates him. Not that he can really blame her, after all, the wrongs are on both their sides. But now with this new possibility, things are completely different. He strolls down the corridors, heading for the place where children and babies are looked after when their parents are at work. He doesn't bother with the people who set everything up, too lost in his thoughts and preoccupations to deal with that right now. Even if he's not sure his relationship with Octavia will improve and become truly familial. He wants to help her. He decides to gather things for baby and child. He can't take down everything he'd like to, but he's collecting mixed clothes from a bit of all ages. Toys, various items that might be useful, milk. He hears footsteps behind him, and when he turns around he's surprised to discover Callie.
- Kids' stuff. Do you have anything to announce? she asks, with no animosity in her voice. At the start of their divorce, it was hard for them to be in the same room, but it's been over 10 years since their separation. Now their relationship is cordial, even friendly.
Kane feels a little embarrassed. He and Abby have decided not to tell anyone about their first life together. Sinclair and Miller's father suspect that something is different from usual, but neither of them dares to talk about it. They're content to follow their leader's instructions. Vera, Kane's mother, has asked him several times if there's anything going on between him and Abby, but so far he's always managed to avoid answering. But Callie, he refuses to lie to her, they've been through too much during their marriage to give her such an affront.
- Yes and no. Sit down, Callie. He points to a chair, while he sits on a toy chest. He decides to tell her part of the truth. Before sending the teenagers to Earth, Abby gave them medical tests. By analyzing the blood of one of the teenagers, she realized that she had the same gene as Vera and me. She did a DNA test, and it turned out to be my daughter.
Callie is shocked. Kane not wanting a child was one of the main causes of their divorce. And now he has a daughter.
- Who does? she manages to articulate.
- Octavia Blake.
- The child hidden under the floor. Callie immediately remembers. She's 16. You cheated on me. she quickly understands.
- It only happened once. I'm sorry, Callie. I was lost that night and you and I were already having problems.
- The problem was that you didn't want a child.
- I know, I know, I know. It surprised me as much as it did you. I could never have imagined that Octavia was my daughter.
- What would you have done if you'd known?
Kane thought long and hard about the question.
- I would have assumed. Even if I hadn't wanted to have a child, I wouldn't have given her up.
- I agree. After a silence, she finally asked. Why do you take children's things? I don't think she'll need them, considering her age. Callie says, hoping to dissipate the tension that has built up between them since her ex-husband's revelation.
Kane runs a hand through his hair. It's a long, complicated story. Maybe one day I'll be able to tell you. But even if Octavia isn't a child anymore, these are things she might need to know in the not-too-distant future.
Callie doesn't ask any more questions, certain that Kane won't give her the answers. But another question torments her.
- You and Abby? You don't have to answer if you don't want to.
- I know it may seem surprising, but Abby and I have more in common than we thought. It's all new, so we're taking it slow. He remembers their moment of confrontation after launching the dropship in their first life, and giving it electric lashes. Today, thinking back, he feels ashamed and bad.
- Does your mother know she has a little girl?
- No, not yet. I hope to introduce her when we get to Earth. Kane lets out a long sigh. Octavia doesn't know I'm her father. Her mother never told her about me.
- At least all this bad history will have helped find you.
- I hope so, Callie, more than you can imagine. he says wearily.
Their discussion ends there and Callie leaves. Kane packs up all his belongings and decides to put them in the safe so that everything is in one place. He asks one of the guards passing by to take the trunk to the medical section, where it will be best protected. He's not sure why, but he feels the need to go and see where Octavia grew up. He enters the cabin, which is small and can only accommodate two people. He looks down at the floor and his heart sinks at the thought of his daughter having to contort her entire childhood to hide in this tiny space. Kane makes a quick tour of the house. He sits down on the bed, still lost in thought. Just as he's about to leave, he spots a piece of notebook sticking out from under the bed. He pulls it out. It's a diary, Aurora's diary. He begins to leaf through it, until he comes across the passage where Aurora talks about her pregnancy. The lines pass before his eyes, and what he reads horrifies him more and more. By the end of the diary, he's totally shocked by Aurora's revelations. True, he didn't know her very well, but he'd never imagined she'd harbor such thoughts and feelings. He takes the diary with him, even if he doesn't really know what to do with it. The last thing he wanted was for Octavia to read it. He'd better destroy it.
When he returns to his apartments, Abby is waiting for him. She spends a lot of time at his place, well, when she's not at the infirmary or in the control room checking on the kids.
- Is everything all right? She asks him, clearly seeing that something is not as usual.
- I saw Callie. She knows about us. And that Octavia is my daughter. He pours himself a glass of water and goes to sit on the sofa. I've packed a trunk with baby clothes and things, asked to put it in the infirmary. You don't mind, do you?
- Of course I don't mind. I think it's a good idea.
He takes the notebook out of his pocket and places it on the table. Abby points to it with her chin and asks what it is.
- I found it in Aurora's cabin. It's her diary. Abby, what's written in there is terrible.
- I don't understand it.
- Aurora realized she was pregnant with Octavia far too late to do anything about it. She spent the last months of her pregnancy in hiding. Hoping the baby wouldn't survive childbirth. Her words were so chilling, about her own child. When Octavia was born, she unloaded on Bellamy to escape her responsibilities. She refused to give her more than the necessary care. She even writes of having thought of leaving her somewhere on the Ark to be abandoned. But she was afraid of being discovered and losing Bellamy. It was he who cared for her, raised her, sewed clothes for her and gave her a portion of her rations so she could eat. Octavia is still alive only because Aurora was too afraid to get caught getting rid of her. It's horrible growing up in a family like that, having to hide constantly and on top of that being rejected by the only parent you still have.
Abby, too, is revolted by what Kane has just told her. She wonders how Bellamy and Octavia spent their childhood. With a mother who cared so little for her daughter. At that moment she realizes that her children have survived far more horror than she ever imagined. Despite his young age when his sister was born, Bellamy did everything he could to keep her alive and bring her some happiness. Even if his attitude on Earth didn't always turn out to be the most logical and reasonable. Abby never doubted that he loved his sister and that the feeling was mutual, despite all the hardships that separated them. They seemed to be on better terms when the dropship left. She hoped their relationship would continue, if only for Octavia's sake and that of her unborn child.
- Do you think we'll be okay tomorrow? Abby asks.
- I hope so. We've made the stations more secure, we've explained to people how the landing will go. We've done everything we can.
None of them can sleep for more than a few hours that night, too anxious.
The next day, Abby and Kane take charge with the help of Miller, Sinclair and Wicks. They dispatched people to the various stations. Everyone is allowed to take a few things in addition to what the council has managed to stockpile and which might be useful to them on Earth. Velma and Callie are on the same station as Kane and Abby. They're holding hands. Can't wait to get back to Earth, and to their daughters.
- Ready to go? Kane asks.
The others nod, the other stations assuring them that they're ready for takeoff. With a thud, each station flies off to their new life.
