I woke up to Itachi's sleeping face. I shook my head to myself.

Really, was I just plain stupid, or just selfish? Because I was falling in his arms way too easily. I was making moves on him way too easily. The one way to stop doing that was to…stay away from him altogether.

Yup, physical distance was the one thing that could…

Itachi started coughing in his sleep. It broke me out of my thoughts, and I put some clothes on to watch over him. When it did not calm down and Itachi woke up, I grabbed a bowl and put it between his thighs. I held his hair together and kept him in my arms as he puked the little food he still had in his stomach and blood. It seemed less violent than his last attack, but it was as gut-wrenching to watch as usual.

When he was done, he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. I ran my hand in his back while he was panting. He put the bowl aside and leaned against me, wrapping the cloak and tablecloth around him. His face was in the crook of my neck.

"Using chakra triggers them," I whispered. "We know that now, if you had told me when you started using chakra yesterday…" I sighed. "I got carried away, I'm sorry."

"…you're stunning when you're surrounded by snow," he whispered against me.

"If you think flirting now is going to change my mind Itachi you're wrong." I sighed. "I mean, I'm surprised to see you have that much stamina, sure but…"

"Because it's not as bad as before, and it will not be." He gulped and straightened up.

"Water?" He nodded and looked around.

Once he had some clothes on and had gone to the bathroom, I made soup for the both of us.

"Do you know when the disease is going to be dealt with?" He stared at his meal for a few seconds.

"When I'm going back to Konoha," he confessed quietly. I blinked, taken back. "Dai thinks it's big enough to be remove." I wasn't sure how to react.

"Remove how?"

"Open-heart surgery." I gulped and leaned my bowl on my lap.

"Oh, that's…huh…wait, if Dai told you that, maybe Kakashi and you should have swapped places." He pursed his lips and I frowned. "Itachi, the Land of Water and Kiri are the reason you're sick in the first place! Getting better and getting rid of this shitty virus should be your priority!"

"Right now, my priority is you." I widened my eyes at that. "I can't just go back to Konoha and let Kakashi-san take my place when I know what's going on here Akane, they almost killed you once already and…" He gritted his teeth. "I know what you think of me, but I'm not leaving until I know Kiri is safe for you, and you won't make me change my mind." I looked down, my hands clenched on my bowl.

"You're a stubborn idiot," I mumbled under my breath. He scoffed.

"What are you then?" I bit the inside of my cheek.

"Can you promise me one thing?" He looked at me. I took a deep breath. "When this is over, you go home without protest and get this virus out of your body for good. Don't talk back to the doctors, I feel like the convalescence process might be long so just…don't let this kill you a second time. I watched you die slowly before; you can't die the same way because you helped me, I don't…I can't have that added to my guilt." His eyes lingered on my lips, and he nodded.

"I promise."

"And don't go break that one." He pursed his lips, but I could see the hint of an amused smile on them.

"Yes Ma'am." I finished eating quickly and went to the door.

I opened it to see snow piled up to my chest. I looked beyond it. Yeah, it had snowed a lot, it would reach our knees. I shut the door. It was sunny, with no cloud and above freezing point, it would melt.

"We can stay here." I glanced at Itachi. He shrugged. "Or I can use a Fire jutsu."

"No, no using chakra outside of fighting for you." I tended to the fire. "I can get rid of the snow anyway, it's not really an issue. I don't think doing it until the coast is a good move, however. I doubt I can use the Hiraishin safely with you right now anyway, and going in the cold for now is…"

"We can stay here," he repeated. His fingers ran over my knee when I sat back down next to him. "I enjoyed our pastime." I smirked faintly.

"I'm sure." I looked nervously at the window. Who knew if…And I had told Fugaku-sensei that I would stay away from his son!

I sighed and ducked, my hands in my hair.

"Akane…"

"Sorry, I'm sorry, it just…it wasn't that complicated before, nobody cared whether or not we were seeing each other."

"Hn." I raised my eyes to him. "What are your plans after?"

"After what? Kiri?" He nodded. I straightened up. "I doubt I'm going to have much free time; we'll need to rebuild and get the village back in shape, pacify, a lot of work but…then I don't know. I don't think sensei would keep me under her orders by force."

"…really?" I raised a brow. "It's just…you're a good element."

"Yeah, but she's fully aware of why I'm in Kiri. She knows I won't leave until Kiri can stand on its own anyway, and she knows I have a family in Konoha as well. The first thing to go is the law that made me a kunoichi there, if it goes, anyone impacted by it will have the choice to remain or not."

"Then…maybe you could come back to the village." I raised a brow, and he cleared his throat, looking away. "Hokage-sama told me he would get rid of your missing-nin status once everything was over."

"Huh." He glanced at me from the corner of his eyes.

"Naruto and Sasuke miss you. Kushina-san as well." I looked down.

"I miss them too, and Kakashi, and Kou and Yasuo."

"I'm sure Minato-san wouldn't make you a kunoichi again if you don't want to," he whispered.

"Oh, he won't, he can't. I went against an Elder, guilty or not, it has taken away any legitimacy I could have in Konoha as a kunoichi. Danzou is still around however, so are the other Elders, I'm sure the villagers are still fucking pricks and…and I left Konoha with Shisui, it would feel wrong to go back to it without him when he's the native." He lowered his shoulders a little.

"Of course."

"And not gonna lie, the further I am from your clan, the better I am. I don't want to go back to Konoha just to start thinking I shouldn't have gotten involved and let them deal with their…" I breathed out slowly. He clenched his hands on the cloak, his bowl next to him. "What is it?"

"They…a couple of years ago, Izumi admitted something to me." I sniffed, already feeling annoyed. "The Elders of my clan didn't like us being close, so they used her feelings for me to…get her to split us apart." I just…stared at him.

"Shocker." He looked at me, taken back. "What? What she was trying to do was obvious. Your clan Elders being the ones behind it is not surprising with the hostility I received when I was in the Uchiha Compound. The most surprising is you finally saying out loud she has feelings for you."

"Why didn't you tell me?" I deadpanned at him.

"I did tell you already I would not get in-between your clan and you, and she is part of your clan. It was hard enough not to strangle her with her hair already, it was not my job to tell you what was happening when it was your clan and their methods." I rubbed my forehead. "The kid was used, too bad for her, but she was a kunoichi already so…"

"You're harsh on her."

"And you're soft," I retorted coldly. "You've always been and it's fucking annoying Itachi."

"She's my friend."

"And childhood sweetheart, obviously," I spat with venom in my voice. He was taken back and so was I. I never had to fight for his attention before and Izumi just… "Look, if you had feelings for her when you were younger it's fine, just be honest about it instead of…" I sighed in frustration. "I hate being jeal…" He was quiet and staring harshly at his legs. "You did, didn't you?" He licked his lips.

"It was nothing compared to what I feel for you," he whispered softly.

"It obviously was something."

"Yes, I guess but comp…Guilt was there as well Akane, it was…"

"You killed her before, I know, so you wanted to make it up to her?" He gulped. I narrowed my eyes. "There's something more to her death?"

"Nothing important." I knew he wouldn't say more.

But there was more to it, and I was itching to know.

"Alright."

Stay away from Izumi so Akane would not stop talking to him. He had not realized how…impacted Akane had been by Izumi and her feelings for him. He did not return them, so he never thought that…

He sighed as she activated the seal that would allow him to enter the Yuki clan shrine. They had had a perfect night; he had an attack and then…Akane had been back to professional business.

He was making a step forward then ten backward.

He felt terrible about what he had showed Izumi. Living a life with him, married, mother and then grandmother and dying of old age together…She had lived it in a way, and so had he because he was showing her. He was showing her what he wanted, but it was not…it was her dream, not his.

His eyes looked at Akane's back. He doubted it was something she wanted to know right now.

He knew Akane would hate knowing that when he…left her behind. He had to tell her though. He had to tell her the truth and let her…

The small crush he had had on Izumi was nothing, it didn't mean anything anymore. Akane had been his first crush anyway, then his first and last love.

"Son of a…" He perked up at that. Akane turned around, disturbed. "He came not long ago."

"How can you be sure?" She showed him a paper.

"It was where the scroll was between the others." He opened it. "Do you recognize the handwriting?" He frowned.

"It's Shisui's."

"Yup. Shisui wrote saying he hoped I was better." She took the paper again and put it in her back pouch. "I might just gouge his other eye out when I see him."

"At least it shows him and Ushio are most probably doing that behind the Akatsuki's back."

"You don't say." She pointed at the wall, then the opposite one. "Seals to cut off this shrine from prying eyes and ears." She walked to one and traced a black line carefully with her finger. "I don't know if I should be glad my father is attached to family heirloom or scared." She sighed. "Let's get out of here."

When they were on the boat, Akane was staring thoughtfully at Juhyou island.

"Akane?"

"Hum?" When she saw his quizzical glance, she shrugged. "I think the climate there would be good to train that mode I entered in Kiri."

"It's extreme condition."

"Most elemental kekkei genkai are trained in extreme climatic conditions," she retorted. "They don't work like doujutsus." She lay down in the boat, her arm over her eyes. "Keep going straight, we'll get food on the next island and start the mission there."

He sighed to himself. He knew that currently, talking to her would be like talking to a wall.

He knew her too well, and more than she knew.

They received news ten days later in the form of no one but Mei and Yagura. It was mid-October when he found himself on a ship. They had started fighting back slowly, resisting Kiri's forces around the main island in the villages all at once, to the point where their forces retreated back to Kiri.

"We have received word from Konoha, they had to stop because of a storm." Mei bit on her bottom lip at the news.

"We can't wait Mei," Zabuza told her. "They know we're here, it's a question of time until they attack first. We can't give them time to get ready." He glanced at the silhouette jumping on board.

"There's no underwater traps around the village, but I cannot guarantee if it is safe for the Houzukis," the Mizukage stated.

"Choujurou." The teenager barely received Hiramekarei without dropping it as it was thrown at him. "If I'm on tanking duty, Kabutowari and Shibuki will be enough." Itachi glanced at Nuibari on Akane's back briefly.

He had no idea why he was even surprised when he realized she was part of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist now.

"I'll take care of Raiga," Zabuza stated firmly.

"Hey, kill him just to check if he comes back from the dead to weep at his own funerals," Akane suggested with a wry smirk. Zabuza laughed at that while Mei slapped her behind her head. "What, Raiga cries at funerals and he goes to every funeral held in the village sensei!"

"Akane," Mei said in a warning tone. Akane sighed.

"Sorry." Akane glanced at him, then Yagura. "Itachi and I go with Yagura and infiltrate the village with the Hiraishin. We go directly to the Mizukage Tower."

"They expect us, Kisame's going to be the bodyguard," Dai told them.

"I said I was going with Itachi, didn't I? I ain't gonna waste one of Konoha's pride and joy as cannon fodder." He deadpanned at her. She shrugged. "I say it as I see it."

Traveling on the San…Isobu's back was strange. It was quick though, and soon they were facing the mountains on the east of the harbor. He could see what looked to be weapons on top of them, aimed at them.

"Yaye, kunai throwers," Akane said, unfazed. Isobu went a little bit more out of the water, enough for his eye to be above it. Akane crawled toward it, hold onto the spikes on his face and bent toward his eye. "Hey buddy, remember the plan Yagura and I told you?"

"Defense, defense, defense," the bijuu replied. He almost sounded excited to be part of the plan like anyone else.

"Shukaku's defense is overrated anyway."

"Kurama would agree." That was Kyuubi.

They both made two shadow clones. Isobu created a wall of coral in front of them to block the kunai and threw water balls at the mountain. Parts of it collapsed, forcing the shinobi to focus on that for a moment.

"High more than far," Akane reminded the bjuu as he lifted one of his tails out of the water.

They both ran to it and Akane gave him one of her markers. Akane climbed on his back, and they nodded to each other, signaling they were ready.

"Ready when you are!"

Isobu roared, the coral crumbling in the sea in front of him. Then he threw them at very high-speed in the air, mist filling the area beneath them.

"Sorry if I strangle you!" Akane yelled, the wind lashing at their faces and whistling in their ears. It was freezing cold too.

Akane hold onto him tightly as he removed his arms from under her knees, focusing on getting the marker at the right spot.

Akane stretched out her hand on their right, ice stopping the shuriken coming at them. They started to fall, and she tightened her legs around his waist and stomach immediately. He glanced at the coming wave of weapons, seeing a few had explosive tags attached. His sharingans spun lazily in his eyes and he added two kunai to the marker.

"Stop them after me!" He threw the marker down, pretending to have a target other than the Mizukage Tower.

He threw a kunai that deflected one with a tag toward one of the weapons on top of the mountains. The other kunai he threw stopped the kunai.

Without a word, Akane made ice. The tags blew up and the blow of the explosions sent the kunai he had stopped straight to the marker. It knocked into it, changing the trajectory while being hidden by the smoke. Itachi narrowed his eyes as he saw it land somewhere in the greenery of the rooftop.

"Your turn!" Akane put her arm around his shoulders.

"Sorry for the landing!" He was teleported, the wind stopping to be replaced by the cold, moist plants on the rooftop. Akane was on his back, and he tapped on her leg to remind her of that. "Oh, sorry." She moved aside. He straightened up and looked at his surroundings, now on his knees.

Unlike the trees on the other rooftops, here the plants reached their knees. The top of the roof was barely higher than him.

"Are you okay?" He nodded and accepted her hand to get up. "There's no doubt about your prowess in shurikenjutsu. You've calculated the impact of the explosion against my ice and its thickness just like that?" He nodded without a word.

They could hear people in the village, and the sound of battles in the distance.

"The others are inside, Yagura and Isobu are still in the sea. Let's go." He followed her to a door and down the last floor. Akane put her hand on the ground and nodded after a few seconds. "They're in the office."

"So, you sense like this outside of water too?" He noticed the surprise in her eyes.

"Minato-san taught me during the Chuunin Exams." He frowned and she rubbed the back of her head. "I guess it just never came up."

Akane blew the door up. Itachi rolled his eyes at the exuberance, finding it unnecessary. However, they stumbled upon an unexpected scene. He recognized the man from Akane's execution, Kirigane, dead on the floor. Kisame gazed at them, a carnivorous smirk on his face as his relative was glaring at him.

"I almost waited brats."

"Hey Kisame, what's the meaning of this!?" Kisame lost his smirk and kicked her in the wall, hard enough to knock her out.

Itachi glanced at Akane, who glanced back at him. It was not what they were expecting. Was Obito making his move now?

"I hate to admit it, but it is very satisfying," Akane commented, slipping something in his back pouch. Kisame nodded.

"You have no idea kid." He pointed Samehada at them. "Now, should I take care of you two together like during in the Chuunin Exams or ladies first?"

"Ladies first," she answered, pushing Itachi forward. Kisame raised a brow and Itachi glanced at her sternly above his shoulder. "Longer hair."

He stopped Samehada with a kunai, his sharingans spinning. Kisame grinned at him.

"Hey, you're stronger than you look." Really, that was…

"Fu…" He looked back to see Akane trying to stab Obito, who had appeared behind her. Her kunai went through his head, and he grabbed her wrist before trying to suck her in his Mangekyou. She teleported away before.

"Kisame, keep him occupied," he ordered him before leaving.

"Sure thing, Yondaime."

"You knew," Itachi said in a firm tone.

"Kiri's business is Kiri's business, not Konoha's." Itachi jumped back, Samehada breaking the floor.

"Obeying orders from someone who manipulated the real Mizukage is above Kiri, and treason." Itachi narrowed his eyes at him a little. "Don't you have no loyalty to your village?"

"Loyalty? The only thing people are loyal to here is power and greed. Whatever Mei's movement is looking for is long gone."

Kisame had never talked to him about the Mist or used people's names. It was strange to see for himself the life he had left.

"It led you to follow him?" Kisame's smirk disappeared.

"It is a fight, not a therapy session Uchiha."

"I am trying to understand what would lead the strongest member of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist to let his village plunge in years of bloodshed." Kisame pursed his lips. "Or maybe you are actually just a thug who does not know where to go." It made him twitch.

"Do you want to know something interesting Uchiha? Some sharks are ovoviviparous, meaning the eggs hatch inside the female's body, then are born. However, with some type of sharks, the number of eggs that hatch don't match up with the number of pups born. Do you know why?"

"Cannibalism," he replied automatically, remembering Kisame giving him the exact same speech the first time they had met. Kisame's sly grin came back.

"Exactly. When the eggs hatch, the pup resort to cannibalizing their siblings in the mom's belly. From the moment they are born, the fratricide begins. Other than itself, every other pup is fodder." He put Samehada on his shoulder. "Kiri's full of sharks, and when only the strongest survive, they will turn against each other. It's the way of the Hidden Villages as well, they sign peace treaties after wars only to strike at the first occasion and get rid of the threat. Following the leadership of a place just because it is where you were born or comply to demands because of blood is meaningless. Any smart shinobi Kiri ever produced took off a long time ago. Those still here, like your idiotic girlfriend who decided to jump straight in the shark's mouth, are running straight to their deaths and are chasing a hopeless dream."

"Those who raised a hand against their comrades never have a decent death. You should remember this."

"Then none of us are going to die decent death. Power rules our world, I doubt your hands are clean. I can see it in your eyes."

"No. We are humans, not fish. No matter who you are, you do not know what kind of humans you are until the very end." Itachi twirled his kunai in his hand. "Those people chasing this hopeless dream, they will die true to themselves, trying to create a place they can belong to freely, without fearing betrayal from their own comrades every day. They're trying to put an end to cannibalism when you're trying to run away from it."

He was worried for Akane, she was alone with Obito but…she was strong. Right now, Kisame was his priority. Itachi had a shot at righting his wrongs. If he could help Kisame do the same, find a place in their world instead or roaming it following the Eye of the Moon plan, he would do it.

"Let's get to it then!" Kisame roared as he charged him.

In the mountains behind the village, between Kiri and the sea, were private training grounds. Only the Mizukage, the Swordsmen and a few chosen jounins were allowed to use. They were rock plateaus on several level with a big lake at the bottom, a waterfall going in the sea though a thin passage through the rocks. On the highest plateau, you had one of the most beautiful views of Kiri in the whole village.

It was where Yagura would train me. The lake was big enough to have three Isobus' in it. I had markers around the village, but many here in case. I had not thought Obito would make a move now, like this and yet…

I jumped to my feet and watched him appear on the lake. He didn't have the Akatsuki cloak on.

"Should I call you Mizukage-sama?" I asked him sarcastically. He tilted his head on the side. "Alright, let's not play dumb, what do you want from me?"

He quietly walked closer to me. I summoned Nuibari immediately and got ready to defend myself, but he just stopped in front of me instead. The strange thing was…there was no red in the hole of his mask. Sure, there was mist and the sun was not shining very much but…no sharingan.

I put some distance between us when he raised his hand for me and pointed my sword at him. He didn't move for a few seconds and walked toward me again.

"What's your deal!?"

"Stop being a brat and follow me," he said in a hoarse voice.

"Have you never heard of the sentence 'Stranger Danger'? And you're bestie with my dad, aren't you?"

"Who knows what could happen to Shisui?" I froze, then gritted my teeth. "He wouldn't have had to leave Konoha if you had done a better job." I couldn't let what he was saying get to me. "You take his place and he's free from the Akatsuki." I scoffed.

"As if you or your boss would let him go." He lowered his hand.

Then, in the best imitation he could ever make of an annoyed parent, he put his fists on his hips and sighed deeply.

"Why threaten Konoha to get me in Kiri?" I asked him, lowering my blade as well. "Why make me Yagura's apprentice? Why train me like this? Why resorting to taking those fucking pictures to…"

"Wow, you have bad tastes in men Akane, that's on you!" he retorted in frustration, raising a finger at me. "You're too good for him." I narrowed my eyes at him. "You're too good for everyone really."

"…you sound like a creepy stalker."

"You let your creepy stalker touch you way too much," he shot back. I raised a brow, confused. "Oh yes, he'd stalk you when you were children. A lot." It was disturbing.

"…how would you know that?"

"I was keeping an eye on you, obviously." What… "There was no competent adult taking care of you, someone had to keep an eye on you."

"Because the Fourth Hokage is no…"

"He's awfully late for being so fast," he spat bitterly. "Don't you understand what I'm trying to do?"

"Frankly? I really don't! What have I ever done to you that made you so…creepy?"

"The world is going to its ruins." I blinked. "I am going to save it. I needed you to see how hopeless it was to make you join me."

"…but why?" Seriously, how much had I avoided before?

"Because you're good. And good people die too young and won't see peace. I am trying to save you." What the actual hell was wrong with him?

"By turning Kiri into a tyranny!? Keeping me locked up for two months!? Threatening Konoha!? KILLING MY MOM!?" It was rare of me to yell in anger. However, Obito was hitting a nerve repetitively.

"Kyuubi killed your mom, not me." I glared at him. "Alright, I did attack Konoha on a whim and your mom was collateral damage, but she was neglecti…" I threw Nuibari at him. It went through him. "It is rude to attack people when they are talking."

"Fuck you!"

"You are not making this easy." Nuibari was back in my hand. "Alright, have it your way."

"Suiton: Water Dragon Bullet Technique!" He looked behind him and did not bother to dodge.

Ice would be useless, most of my attacks really. He could phase through all of them. Even seals would be complicated to apply on him. If I knew how to trap him in this dimension, like reverse the Hiraishin and stuff…seal his sharingan, I could…

I ducked his kick.

"I will entertain you." I blinked and he grabbed me by my collar to throw me harshly on the ground. I teleported on the plateau above before I could touch the ground.

Okay, the guys had not really…dived into Obito's skills too much, but he was strong. As in, abnormally strong. I knew the arm he lost at Kannabi Bridge was replaced but…

Obito was in front of me and engaged me in taijusu. He was quick and when I blocked his arm, I felt the impact still did something to my arm. I gritted my teeth and covered my fists with ice. I made an ice spike at the tip of my foot when I kicked him, but it went through him.

I teleported away before receiving a punch. I didn't have time to rest that some branches came out of the ground and pinned me to it. What the…

He phased through the ground. However, I managed to turn my hand and put a Chakra Suppressing Seal on the ground. The branches became weak, and I got out of them. The second I was on my feet, he punched me in the jaw. I raised my hand as a reflex and hit his wrist.

It was solid.

He needed to be solid to hit.

I put and Explosive Seal on it, not even caring whether or not it was the arm he had lost once already. It blew up and sent me away. I fell off the plateau and straight to the cold water of the lake. When I surfaced, I was taken back by the spiral of fire coming my way. I dove back in the water and spotted Yagura coming quickly my way. I stretched my hand out for him and teleported us on the lowest plateau.

"How well can you transfer a Bijuu bomb from a marker to another?" he asked me in a whisper.

"Small one? I make clones and it's easy. Big one? Once." I had done that once while training with him.

Yeah, Isobu threw a bijuu bomb at me when we were at sea. The Hiraishin, Guiding Thunder Technique was great.

"Let's try the small one."

"Don't look in his eye." He nodded and ran off, in version Two to be a distraction. I made a few shadow clones and spread them at each marker.

When we were positioned well, Yagura threw a small bijuu bomb at Obito. He phased through it, but I received it and threw it to another marker.

"What?" He phased again, and a third time but by the fourth one he jumped and let it crash elsewhere.

However, instead of going for me, Obito went to Yagura. Yagura who just…froze for a split second.

I, very smartly, decided to jump between the two. Obito literally kicked me out of the way, which brought Yagura back to reality. As I crashed, I saw Yagura being trapped by wood, the bijuu cloak slowly going away.

Right, Mokuton won against bijuu.

I stood up. One second, I was staring at Obito's back and Yagura trapped, the other, Minato was there with the rasengan in hand. Obito vanished, but the rasengan destroyed the wood.

"We meet again, Yondaime." I stood up and glared at my right ankle. It seemed twisted, or broken, in any case it hurt.

"Are you ready for a rematch?" Minato-san's voice was sharp as a knife.

"Sadly, I have to leave." I walked up to Minato's side slowly. Obito glanced at me. "But we'll see each other again." And just like that, he was gone.

I went to Yagura, who was panting. I put my hand on his shoulder.

"Sorry," he apologized in frustration.

"I'm not dead," I replied. "What…"

"I don't know, I lost control of my own chakra I think, it was strange."

"Huh." I glanced at Minato, then him, then back to Minato. "So…what now?"

"Go in the village, help keep the villagers away from harm, deal with the other side. Avoid killing as much as possible, they are still members of Kiri," Yagura told me, putting a knee on the ground.

"I'll take care of him Akane. Be careful but go." I nodded at both Kage and went in the village.

Mangetsu seemed a little bit too happy to see me, but fighting, his back against mine was comforting after facing Obito.

Oh.

I hoped Itachi was fine against Hoshigaki-san.
