A bit shorter than the others, but hopefully long enough for people to enjoy.
Lynedele77, my beta, thank you so much for your work in getting this ready!
At 12:15 Lauren was standing in the lobby of the hospital, looking at her watch and waiting for Bo. She furrowed her brow; it wasn't like Bo to be late.
Almost on cue, Bo walked through the door. "I am so, so sorry," she said. "I got in the middle of something and got help up."
Lauren smiled and gave her a quick kiss. "No problem at all. Everything alright?"
"Yeah," Bo said, as they walked out the door and towards Bo's car. "But is it okay we make a quick stop before lunch?"
"Sure," Lauren said, climbing into the passenger seat.
Bo turned on the car the pair started driving. Lauren adjusted the radio, seeking out a classic rock station. Soon the voice of Eric Clapton was drifting through the car singing Layla, ya got me on my knees, Layla…
"Ahh, and it's the unplugged version!" Lauren exclaimed happily.
Bo smiled. "Hendrix is still better, but this is a good song."
They listened in quiet for a moment. "Hey," Bo said. "I read the speech."
"I know it probably needs a lot of work," Lauren commented. "But hopefully it's enough to get you started?"
Bo glanced over at her for a moment before turning her eyes back to the road. "It's perfect."
Lauren smiled happily.
They continued to ride for a bit more and soon were pulling up the courthouse.
"Did you just want me to wait out here while you finish up?" Lauren asked.
"Actually, I was hoping you'd come in, there's something I need you to sign," Bo answered.
Lauren looked at her in confusion. "What?"
Bo finished parking the car and turned off the engine, turning to face Lauren. "I called a friend of mine this morning and got her to write up a new deed for the house."
"A new deed?"
Bo nodded. "Yeah, a new deed. But it's only official once it's all signed and notarized and registered."
"Why do you need me to sign it?"
Bo laughed. "Seriously, Dr. Lewis? Because I added your name on it."
Lauren stopped for a moment, taken aback.
"I just…" Bo continued, fumbling for words for a moment. "I bought the house without talking to you. And I shouldn't have. We're supposed to be a team, and you should have been part of that decision. But, well…I did buy it. But I didn't buy it for me, I bought it for us. It's just as much yours as it is mine. So, I mean…you need to be on the deed. It needs to legally be yours, because if it's just mine…" she trailed off for a moment. "It just…it isn't just mine. It's ours. It's always been ours."
Lauren was quiet, trying to process the new information. "How…doesn't it take a while to draw up a deed? How did you get this done this fast?"
"I know people," Bo said, with a smile. "I called in a favor."
Lauren chewed on the inside of her lip for a moment. "Do you…are you sure you want to do this?"
"I do."
Lauren smiled slowly. "Then…okay." She reached for her door handle.
"Actually, wait," Bo said before Lauren could get the door open.
Lauren felt her heart drop as she released the door handle and turned back to Bo.
"There's actually…well, there's a little more to it."
"…okay," Lauren answered, trying to figure out where this was going.
"So, there are a few ways for property to be held. One is called tenants in common. That's when two people own something together. There's another one, called joint tenants."
"What's the difference?"
"The different types of tenancies have an impact on things like estate planning."
Lauren looked at Bo, confused. "Are you writing a will? What's going on?"
Bo smiled and cleared her throat. "There's a third type called tenancy by the entirety."
Lauren rubbed her forehead. "Bo, I love you, you know I do, and this was a beautiful gesture, but the legalese is a little outside my area of expertise, so – ?"
"Tenancy by the entirety is just like joint tenancy, with the added condition that the parties have to be married."
Lauren felt her heartrate increase as she fell silent.
Bo cleared her throat again. "I had two deeds written up, so there's no pressure here. I know this is a lot, and we're just sitting in a car outside of a courthouse, and…you know what? This was a bad idea. Because you deserve something…I don't know, something better than this, than me babbling in a car about deeds and property rights, and…shit, this isn't what…look, we don't need to do this right now, I have the joint tenancy deed, and we can just sign that, I shouldn't have…we don't have to sign the tenants by the entirety deed, seriously we don't, not if you don't want…can you please say something?"
Lauren's voice was only slightly above a whisper when she spoke. "Are you…asking me to marry you today?"
Bo continued to look at her, not answering, trying to gauge Lauren's reaction. When Lauren just continued to look at her, she took a deep breath. "Yes."
"You're proposing to me…with land contracts?"
"…yes."
Lauren leaned over to Bo and pulled her into a kiss. She felt Bo's hands move to her back, pulling her in as closely as she could within the confines of the car. When they broke apart, Lauren looked into Bo's eyes. "That proposal has to be the most Bo Dennis thing ever."
"Well, I've obviously spend months planning it," Bo joked.
"Is this really what you want?" Lauren asked.
Bo kissed her again, more briefly. "I do," she repeated. "If you do."
Lauren reached for her purse and started looking through it.
"Heyyy…not to pressure you here, but…I'm feeling a little vulnerable, so…" Bo half joked.
Lauren smiled and put up one finger in a 'give me a minute' gesture. "Hang on, hang on."
"Oh, sure, no problem," Bo said. "I'm good. I'll just sit here…in agony…slowly dying…"
Lauren continued to search until she came across the box that had fallen to the bottom of the bag. She pulled it out and opened the top, turning to Bo to reveal the ring.
"You…when did you…what…"
Now it was Lauren's turn to clear her throat. "I got it…well, I got it, it doesn't matter when. I've been…holding on to it."
"You got me a ring?" Bo said, her voice quiet.
In her mind, Lauren knew that this was the part where she should talk about how much Bo meant to her, and that she loved her, and what being married to her would mean. Instead, all she could think about was the way Bo had looked like she stopped breathing when she saw the ring, the way her voice broke slightly hopefully when she asked about it, the way the light attached itself to the side of her face when she looked back up into Lauren's eyes. And so, instead of any grand and eloquent speeches about the future, she said, "only if you want one."
Bo picked up the ring. "Well, I don't know, it's all so sudden…"
Lauren swatted Bo playfully before Bo pulled her back in for another kiss.
Later that night, Bo and Lauren were lying in bed, naked, tired, and thoroughly happy. Bo's eyes kept stealing back to the ring on her left finger. Lauren laid her head on Bo's chest, looking with her.
"We have to get you one," Bo noted. "Also I didn't get us wedding bands."
Lauren smiled. "We both did impeccable planning on this."
Bo smiled and kissed the top of Lauren's head. "I don't care, it was perfect."
"Yeah, it was."
The lapsed back into an easy silence, enjoying the feeling of one another.
"You know what I just realized?" Bo asked.
"What?"
"This was the first Wednesday of our relationship where we didn't get lunch."
Lauren thought for a second, and realizing that Bo was right, laughed. "Hey, how are you going to tell Kenzi? Do you think she's going to be pissed we got married so close to her wedding?"
"No, she won't care about that. She'll care that I didn't consult her first, but she won't care about the date."
Lauren smiled. "Should you call her? Or Dyson?"
Bo angled herself so Lauren could see her face. "It's our wedding night and you want to start making phone calls to relatives?"
Lauren laughed. "Want may be a strong term. More like…should we make calls to avoid hurt feelings?"
Bo hugged Lauren closer into her chest. "We'll be with them all tomorrow, we can tell them when we meet for dinner."
"Shit, Thanksgiving dinner! We have to make our stuff!" Lauren started to hurriedly get up from bed.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a minute! It's our wedding night! Where do you think you're going?"
Lauren turned back to Bo. "If you want to have more than one day of marriage we need to get this stuff prepped or Kenzi will kill you and I'll be a widow."
"No, no, absolutely not. We can just do it tomorrow."
Lauren walked over to Bo, attempting to pull her out of bed. "Bo, come on, it's," she looked at the clock, "2 in the morning. If we don't start prepping stuff there's no way we'll get the turkey done."
"Nate was supposed to bring the turkey," Bo grumbled.
"It was your idea to make them bring sides because you were afraid of Kenzi," Lauren noted with her hands on her hips. "So, really, this is all your fault."
"It is our wedding night and not only are you telling me that you're getting out of bed, you're going to make me cook."
Lauren regarded Bo for a moment. "What if I tell you I'll cook naked?"
Bo jumped up. "For God's sake, Lewis, let's get moving! We'll never get done in time at this rate."
Thoughts are always appreciated
