A/N #1: Great getting the feedback I did for the last chapter so I'll start on that! Mb (Really glad reading you thought the chapter was wonderful! And I wasn't surprised you were glad everyone was feeling better with everything that's been happening with the case. Nice you enjoyed Skye and Mary surprising Julia also that you thought it was the same that they got to meet the twins now instead of with everyone there for Christmas. I laughed but I completely agree, I want the Castle house too, it'd be awesome to live there! Great you though it was nice seeing everyone together there too! You're welcome for the first half of the chapter! I wasn't surprised you were laughing at the first half of the chapter ending with Skye and Mary enjoying each other and then Castle and Beckett doing the same with this half. But I'm pleased that you enjoyed that! Not surprised you found the dreams interesting since it had a clue but they couldn't quite figure it out. I wasn't surprised either at your questions regarding the museum too, they'll be answered! The same with the person going to the hospital to confess, and you had a good question there too! You're welcome for the second half of the chapter!).
Thanks for the review, I loved reading it and I appreciate the time taken to write it out and send it my way!
A/N #2: The title of this chapter is a lyric from the song I'm in Love with My Car written by Roger Taylor, from the Queen album A Night at the Opera.
Such A Thrill
Opening her eyes, Harrington looked around for a moment before she remembered she wasn't in her house. It was then she became aware she was being held, and the memory of earlier that morning came back to her swiftly. It was then she felt Fox shifting against her back and she hurriedly turned around so the officer would see she was awake.
"Morning, how'd you sleep?" Fox asked with a sleepy smile.
"Much better," Harrington replied.
"I… I'm sorry?" Fox then questioned with a frown since she realized her arm was slung over the woman's hip.
"It's alright," Harrington reassured her. She sat up then and said, "Unless you're forgetting what we talked about this morning."
"Oh no, I remember," Fox replied. She then frowned and said, "I wish the circumstances had been better. Me asking you out."
Shaking her head firmly Harrington replied, "It was romantic, you were comforting me and I appreciated it."
Sitting up herself in a hurry, Fox said, "Then you didn't mind the kiss."
Smiling Harrington leaned into the officer and brushed her lips to hers lightly telling her, "No."
Gathering the woman in her arms Fox said, "I really hope this case is solved soon."
Pulling back a little Harrington told her, "The case or your need to protect me?"
"To be honest both," Fox answered. "That way you're completely safe."
Nodding briefly Harrington was about to speak before their alarms were going off and they sighed at the same time before they let go of each other. Once they were off the bed she asked, "When do you want to leave?"
"I have to get in touch with the chief for that," Fox said, looking at her phone. "But we'll be able to have breakfast at least."
"I'll make it," Harrington said firmly. When the officer turned to her she merely raised her eyebrow and Fox was nodding.
"Alright, just don't go to too much trouble," the officer said before she was stepping up to her closet. While she was getting her uniform she said, "You don't need to go home yet right?"
"No," Harrington said. "And that's going to be former home."
"Former?" Fox asked, turning to her in surprise.
"Yeah, I… I'm sure now," Harrington said, speaking more firmly after hesitating at the beginning. She then smiled and said, "Does that surprise you?"
"To be honest no," Fox replied, turning back to the closet. Once she had her things in her arms she said, "I'll be right out."
"I'm going to change here," Harrington said. "To get to breakfast faster." After the officer had nodded she turned her attention to changing into her day clothes before she was brushing her hair. Pulling it back she turned to the bathroom door as Fox stepped out and she asked, "Are you okay eating in that?"
"I do it all the time," Fox replied easily.
"I just wanted to make sure," Harrington said before she left the room.
"You're not making something messy are you?" Fox asked.
"No," Harrington replied laughingly before she made a beeline for the kitchen. Looking inside the officer's fridge she spotted what she wanted and took everything out. "Do you like crêpes?" she asked, turning to the officer sitting on the other side of the peninsula.
"I love them. I was going to make some Christmas morning for myself," Fox replied.
Nodding, though an idea had suddenly struck her at that information, Harrington said, "Do you mind if I take those oranges?"
"No, I'll make something else," Fox said. She easily spotted her girlfriend's hesitation and then did so herself before she asked, "Can I call you girlfriend? I just did that in my mind," watching her pause before she was responding with a smile.
"I think so, but I'm assuming it's just while we're by ourselves for the time being," Harrington replied. When Fox nodded she said, "Why did you?"
"You hesitated," the officer said firmly.
"Just something I thought of," Harrington replied with a smile. "But I have a few things to think of now."
"What about the museum?" Fox asked.
"Do you think I could go there today?" Harrington replied with her own question. When Fox hesitated she said rapidly, "I would like to see how things are, I may take over operations there."
"How much was the… I mean Mr. Vernon doing," Fox replied, nearly calling the man the victim.
"It was essentially his job," Harrington said. "His hours were nice since it was open from ten to four Tuesday through Saturday and he showed me what he did too. I'd be able to take over."
Seeing the expression on the woman's face though she was looking down at the batter she was mixing, Fox said, "Do you think that was his intention?"
"I do," Harrington replied. She smiled wistfully and said, "I think he wanted me to take over whenever he was going to retire."
"Would you have?" Fox asked. "Do you even like cars?"
"Oh I do, maybe not as much as Bernard did but I do like them," Harrington said. "And running a museum would be a lot of fun." She looked to the windows, though they were still covered, and murmured, "I just wish they were still here."
Leaving the peninsula and squeezing her arm gently Fox said, "They will be." At Harrington's glance she added, "I do think they saw you as a daughter, they wouldn't have given you an inheritance like this. Especially the jewels."
"I'm not keeping those," Harrington said firmly to keep from crying at her girlfriend's words. "There's a museum east down the island isn't there?"
"There is," Fox replied. "They'd be secure there."
"Then that's where they're going," Harrington commented. She appreciated Fox's hug and responded to it with one arm before she said, "I'm alright. Let me finish." Taking the officer's kiss to her temple, she watched her lean against the counter and said, "You're going to stay there?"
"I'd like to," Fox said. "Unless it bothers you."
"Oh no, not at all," Harrington said, looking down at the bowl in her arm and missing the smile on her girlfriend's face though she shortly after heard her laughing. Glancing at her she was startled to see Fox covering her mouth before she said, "It was that funny," before the officer was responding eventually once she had calmed down enough though she was still smiling.
"I'm sorry, you've been glancing at me," Fox said. "And your answer was very… fast."
"I'm not interested in you just for that uniform," Harrington was quick to say. "But…" she trailed off before she began to blush.
"I understand," Fox replied. "And I expected that."
"Did your ex-" Harrington started to ask.
"No, she actually liked to press me to quit," Fox said, watching her girlfriend return to cooking.
"She did," Harrington stated. "But why?"
"I think she wanted me to focus more on society here," Fox replied.
"Did she know you were part of the dozen?" Harrington asked.
"Of course, she tried to force me to go to the picnic," Fox said simply. "I haven't been since my parents passed away." An angry look appeared on her face for a moment before she said, "She couldn't understand that."
"Who was she?" Harrington asked. "If I can ask."
"Veronica Beasley," Fox replied.
"Beasley? She's the second tier," Harrington said in surprise as she was putting batter in the pan for the first crêpe.
"Yeah I think her family wanted to reach higher," Fox said. "It's actually why I broke up with her."
"It is?" Harrington replied.
Nodding briefly Fox explained saying, "She was trying to convince me to go to next year's picnic… why now I don't know. But she tried to intimate she'd propose if I did that."
"Did you want her to?" Harrington asked.
"No, I was fine with us staying the way we were," Fox replied. She smiled when her girlfriend was looking at her in surprise and she said, "Which is the moment I realized I didn't want to be with her anymore. So I broke up with her then," not taken aback when Harrington was responding to that slowly.
"Why did you say actually?" she said.
"I lied to everyone at the station," Fox said. "Some of the officers are from here in the Hamptons and they're really aware of the tiers of families. I didn't want them to think I was lording it over them or anything."
"Oh," Harrington said. "But I thought they knew already."
"They might now," Fox replied with a sigh. "But I'm not going to say anything."
Nodding briefly, Harrington focused on used up all her batter before the plate she'd gotten was stacked with crêpes.
"Do you need any help with that?" Fox asked, looking on while her girlfriend was getting the toppings. She smiled when Harrington merely shook her head and was about to speak before her girlfriend was doing so swiftly.
"Unless you don't like anything I'm picking out then I'm fine," Harrington told her. When she got no response she focused on getting the crêpes filled before she set them on two separate plates. "Anything else?" she asked. "Protein?"
"I'll get some eggs," Fox said with a smile, starting to push herself away from the counter before she was being stopped.
"You can take the plates to the table," Harrington told her. "I'll take care of the eggs."
Watching her moving to the fridge Fox said, "You know I have cooked in this uniform."
"And you had to take care of me last night," Harrington replied simply. "Let me get this set."
Though she wanted to protest again, Fox nodded before her phone on the peninsula started to ring. "It's the chief," she said, hurrying to answer it.
Half listening to the conversation, Harrington wasn't surprised it was just a check on them and Fox was soon hanging up.
"He asked if you thought of anything," Fox replied.
"I would have told you," Harrington said, not surprised the officer nodded. "I just wish I could."
"They'll find something I'm sure," Fox reassured her before she was walking into the kitchen and helping her girlfriend take everything to the table since the meal was ready.
After they'd eaten for a little, and the officer had complimented her cooking, Harrington asked, "You don't need to go in?"
"Oh no, I'm on duty already," Fox replied. She then said, "And he wants us to stay put until nine."
"Why then?" Harrington asked in confusion after she'd checked the time on her phone.
"That's when his consultants come in," Fox explained. "I'm guessing Skye too and she may talk to you." When she saw her girlfriend's confusion she shrugged and said, "I'm just guessing."
"But the… museum?" Harrington asked carefully.
"I'll ask the chief," Fox assured her before they were turning their attention back to their food. Since they'd had little left they were getting up to clean the table and doing so together before she teased her girlfriend telling her, "Thank you for not keeping me from doing this."
"I thought about it for a second," Harrington replied before she laughed briefly at Fox nudging her playfully.
When they'd finished, the officer was drying her hands and saying, "Now I'm a little… confused."
"What to do now?" Harrington replied, taking the other end of the towel to use. When her girlfriend nodded she said, "To be honest I kind of want to look at the museum's website."
"Alright," Fox said. "Though I should text the chief just in case."
"Are they monitoring it?" Harrington asked in a little surprise as they walked to the desk the officer had.
"I'm not sure, that's why I want to be absolutely sure about it before I let you see it," Fox said, looking down at her computer before she paused. "Have you ever looked at it before?"
"A few times, but I haven't lately since I was helping Eileen with her charity work," Harrington replied.
"Go ahead," Fox told her girlfriend. Looking on while Harrington was getting onto the museum's site, she said, "He has a nice setup."
"He does, I think he was really eager for this…" Harrington started to say before she trailed off.
"What is it?" Fox asked her.
"This exhibit about World War I," Harrington began with a slight frown. "He was going on about it since he had an old ambulance, a Model T actually and he was extremely proud of it."
"Is there something about that car?" Fox asked.
Shaking her head Harrington said, "I just remembered that one because of what Bernard said about it and I read the Castle's books from the 20's." Turning back to the screen she said, "Though I get the feeling he was talking about it because it was so hard to find." After a moment she realized her girlfriend was looking at her and she said, "What?"
"You don't think there's something there?" Fox asked before she realized what she'd said. Shaking her head briefly she said, "I meant there isn't something that could be looked into?"
"No," Harrington replied. "I do remember Eileen telling me Bernard got the car at an estate sale."
"Estate sale?" Fox asked in surprise.
"That was the reaction I had and she told me the family of the man who owned the estate were motivated sellers," Harrington explained. "Apparently they had no idea the worth of the car."
"Then-" Fox started to say before her girlfriend was holding her hand up to stop her so she could speak.
"Not the monetary worth because it was in bad shape," Harrington explained. "He showed Eileen when he first got it because it needed to be stored at their home and I was there at the same time. It… his company at the museum did an amazing job with it." She smiled briefly and then said, "That was a thing there, a window into what Bernard named the workshop so kids would be interested in watching the restoration process." Looking at her girlfriend she said, "They looked at all the employees at the museum right?"
"Of course, first thing since Mr. Vernon was so well known for it," Fox replied.
"Okay, then…" Harrington said slowly, looking at the computer screen. "I don't know why but I feel like if the brooch is in the museum it's there."
"It's almost nine," Fox said, looking at her watch.
"I better get my things together," Harrington said, squeezing gently at her girlfriend's hand as she stood up.
Watching her go, after returning the squeeze, Fox breathed out for a moment and put her computer to sleep before she went to her bag by the front door. After she was sure she had everything she needed for the station she looked at the bedroom doorway where Harrington was walking through. "All set?" she asked.
"I am," the young woman replied. "So… we just go?"
"No, I check the security cameras," Fox answered.
"Cameras?" Harrington said slowly. "You have more cameras?"
"No," Fox answered with a brief smile. "The owners of the complex have asked me to patch into their security cameras, just to keep an eye on things."
Nodding briefly Harrington said, "Hopefully that'll help."
"It will," Fox reassured her. She then touched her upper arm briefly and asked her, "Are you okay?"
"A little worried," Harrington replied.
"Don't be, just stick close okay?" Fox asked her. When she got another nod she went onto her phone and was looking through each camera before she realized Harrington had stepped close to her. Glancing at her she saw the young woman was holding herself tense and she said, "It's clear," before she was letting out her breath hard when Harrington was throwing her arms around her. She squeezed her back with one arm and said, "We'll go straight to the station."
"Yeah I just wanted to do that," Harrington explained, pulling away. She then said softly, "That's okay for now right?"
Smiling briefly Fox leaned into her girlfriend and gently brushed her lips to hers telling her, "Here it is. Come on."
Following the officer out, Harrington was sticking close to her while she was looking around repeatedly until they were at her car. "Too bad we weren't in your cruiser," she said.
"It's not really legal to do that," Fox said, starting the car. "Luckily I'm aware of the quickest way to the station… and it honestly isn't that far." She wasn't surprised when Harrington was murmuring before she left the parking lot and was driving in the direction of the station.
It didn't take long for both women to notice the car that was tailing them but they were both silent, Fox driving a little evasively suddenly to make absolutely sure though it would delay them a bit. She reached for her phone when she managed to reach a street she needed for the station, but just as she turned onto it her car was suddenly struck from behind by another, and she could hear Harrington's scream of fear while they seemed to spin unendingly.
