It had been a long nine months, for all three of them.
Tenko had trauma. They all knew that. He was now prone to panic attacks, which were a common occurrence with every tiny reminder of his quirk or family. He also had nightmares almost every night, and slept in bed with Hisashi and Inko more often then not. He still accidentally disintegrated things pretty often, including the dozens of pairs of gloves he was going through. He was bad about being around lots of people before, but now public places just gave him anxiety about his gloves not working and him accidentally disintegrating something. Or even someone.
Taking all of this into account, including the fact that Hisashi had to be at work all day and Inko didn't need to be home alone all the time as her pregnancy got worse, they decided that homeschooling would be the best option for now. But they would wait until after the pregnancy was over to add that onto Inko's plate. They also, after warming Tenko up to the idea and reassuring him that professionals could handle his quirk, put him into quirk counseling and therapy.
Tenko had gotten to meet some friends of Inko and Hisashi's and their newborn son one day. Mitsuki and Masaru Bakugou and their son Katsuki. They had been pretty nice, even if he was nervous and quiet the whole time. But the baby had tried to slap him when they first met. And tenko had accidentally disintegrated his pacifier, which meant the baby was crying the rest of the time. So the baby might hate him already.
Inko had started pregnancy symptoms about two months in. She'd become too tired to perform regular tasks, she felt sick all the time and went back and forth between struggling to eat and wanting to eat until she exploded. She also kept having the weirdest cravings, things like pickles and spray-on cheese, or rice and mayo.
The only real moment of peace for everyone was the small gender reveal party with the Bakugou's. Mitsuki had made a cake with either pink or blue coloring on the inside, blue meaning a boy and pink meaning a girl. They'd been planning to cut into it, but Tenko had been too excited and ended up slamming his hands into the cake. But before he pulled apart, he'd stopped and turned to Inko and Hisashi, gesturing for them to join him. After a moments hesitance, both parents stuck their hands in with Tenko's, and they all pulled apart at the same time.
To Tenko and Hisashi's complete delight, the inside was a beautiful sky blue.
After that, with Inko's pain and fatigue getting worse, Tenko started having to help out with chores and things around the house. Inko taught him how to cook a few simple things, and showed him how to do the laundry and dishes. He liked being able to help out, but he didn't like knowing he needed to.
Hisashi, due to the fact that they now had one, and were about to have two new mouths to feed, started having to take on more hours at his job, meaning he left earlier and stayed later. He always tried to be home for dinner, but more often then not was too tired to do much after, including playing with Tenko.
And that wasn't even considering the stress of the night that Tenko had woke up to the sound of Inko screaming in bed next to him. Not even an hour later, he was sobbing in fear on the Bakugou's couch after being given the fastest explanation by a panicked Hisashi while Inko screamed in the background. The Bakugou's had been trying to calm him down since they picked him up from the apartment after Hisashi called them at 3 in the morning, to no avail, while their own child cried at the sound of another child crying.
Long story short, it was chaos for everyone involved.
But it had all been worth it after Tenko had been given a proper explanation the next morning once everyone was calm, and they got to go visit them at the hospital after the baby was born that afternoon.
Tenko was the first to burst into the waiting room of the hospital, excitedly scanning each of the numbered doors along the hall ahead, quickly followed by the woman he'd learned to call Auntie Mitsuki after her and Masaru coming to their house and helping out more then once durin the last few months. The receptionists had told them that his aunt and uncle were in room 210.
206, 207, 208...
With a squeal, he rushed forwards towards the destined door the second he saw it. Before he could reach the door though, he was grabbed by the wrist and hoisted up into strong arms.
"Slow down there, little guy," Auntie Mitsuki shook with a chuckle. "We have to check with the nurse to be sure Inko's alright with us coming in."
Tenko pouted but didn't resist as he was carried back towards the desk at the front of the waiting room.
"Excuse me?" Auntie Mitsuki asked. The woman hp Heiden the desk, with what looked like a squirrel mutation, being her large, curled fluffy tail, and buck teeth peeking out from her mouth, turned to her. "Hi, is room 210 accepting visitors?"
"Oh, ic an go check for you," the woman smiled, stepping out from behind the desk. "Give me just a moment."
The squirrel woman disappeared into the room without another word, leaving Tenko and Auntie Mitsuki in the waiting room.
Now that he wasn't in such a rush, he took a moment to look around the room, trying to distract himself without how gradually antsy he was getting. There were chairs lined along each wall, the only gaps being where doors into patient rooms were. There were several others waiting, including a man pacing in the back, and older couple sitting in chairs next to each other, and a teenager playing a video game on a console similar to the one Tenko had at home. A few pretty paintings hung on the walls, but other then that the room was mostly bare.
A moment later, the woman came back out of the room and walked over to them. "You can go ahead."
Without waiting for Auntie Mitsuki to carry him overs Tenko wiggled his way out of her arms and sprinted over to the door, slamming it open so hard it vibrated as it hit the wall behind it.
Inside the room was a desk, shelves, medical supplies, things you'd expect in a hospital room. But his eyes were trained in the bed, where Inko lay under the covers, connected to a few machines, and leaning against the pillow with her eyes closed. Here green hairs was plastered to her forehead by sweat, and her breaths were even but deep and tired. Next to her, Hisashi held her hand in his, sitting on the edge of the bed.
He looked up at the bang of the door and held his finger to his lips in a universal sign to be quiet, but there was amusement in his eyes. And tears.
"I'm not asleep, Hisashi." Inko's voice was quiet and raspy, like it was tired. Probably form all the screaming she'd undoubtedly been doing. Her green eyes opened slowly and met Tenko's, and she smiled. "Hey, Tenko."
Feeling the tears rimming his eyes again, he walked up and climbed onto the bed with Hisashi's help, laying down beside I ok and wrapping his arms around him.
Inko reached over an pulled him closer. "I'm sorry for scaring you, dear."
"It's ok," Tenko sniffed, looking up at her. "Are you ok now?"
She smiled at him. "Much better. Just tired."
Tenko nodded and cuddled in closer, the screams that had been playing on repeat in his head finally fading. Inko was ok.
Then, with a start, Tenko suddenly remembered the reason they were there in the first place. He sat up and glanced around the bed, then looked between Inko and Hisashi with wide eyes. "Where!s the baby?"
Both parents smiled at each other. "They had to bring him back to do some testing. He'll be back in a few minutes for you to meet him," Hisashi answered after a moment.
Tenko nodded. "Have you guys picked out a name?"
Inko nodded. "We'll tell you when he gets here."
Tenko pouted And was about to protest, but was interrupted by a voice in the door.
"Can the bestie interrupt?"
All heads spun to see Auntie Mitsuki smirking, leaning against the door frame.
Inko smiled and sat up a bit straighter, wincing slightly at the movement. "Of course, Mitsuki."
The blonde's expression softened a bit as she stepped inside. "How are you, Inko?"
"Exhausted," Inko groaned, letting her head fall against her pillow.
Mitsuki chuckled. "Well the worst of it is over, I can give you that much reassurance. But I was still sore and tired for weeks after at least."
Inko sighed. "Thanks."
"How's the baby?"
"Doctor said he's healthy," Hisashi spoke up. "Just took him back for some last check-up's, then we can take him home when we're ready."
"Glad to hear it," Mitsuki smiled.
"How was your night?" Hisashi ruffled Tenko's hair cheerily, but likely asked after noticing Mitsuki's deep eye bags. She'd already been exhausted from taking care of a new born baby. "Hope this little monster wasn't too much chaos."
Mitsuki chuckled lightly as Tenko huffed. "Well, can't say anyone got much sleep, but you can't really blame him for that. He was really scared."
Tenko kept his eyes down to where he was playing with Inko's hand, but he could feel the concerned looks from his aunt and uncle.
"Thank you for taking care of him," Inko sighed, sounding tired and weary.
Mitsuki waved her off. "Oh, it was no big deal. Nothing worse then the last few months."
Before anyone could say any more, a nurse with bright blue hair and matching eyes stepped inside, cradling what looked like a wad of blankets like it was a baby or something.
Tenko almost slapped his forehead. That probably was a baby.
Mitsuki stepped away back towards the door. "I'll let you three have a moment."
After she left, the nurse approached the bedside with a smile. "Would you like to hold him, ma'am?"
Inko was grinning from ear to ear as she nodded. Hisashi tugged at Tenko's arm, and Tenko crawled off the bed as the nurse carefully lowered the blankets into Inko's slightly shaky arms.
Tenko watched with wide eyes from Hisashi's lap, trying, and failing, to stretch his neck high enough to see the tiny person in the bundle. The nurse, deciding to leave the family alone for a moment, quietly excused herself and left the room.
Inko looked down at the bundle with tears eyes and a wobbly smile. Hisashi lowered Tenko and stood up, leaning in and wrapping an arm around Inko as he smiled down at the bundle too.
"Hiya, little guy," Hisashi whispered.
Frustrated at being too short to see, Tenko, with a grunt, pulled himself up on the bed and crawled over.
With a light chuckle as she glanced up at Tenko, Inko lowered the baby a bit more so Tenko could more easily see the baby.
Practically buried in the midst of bunched fabric, a tiny face, with pink, squishy looking cheeks lay. His eyes were closed, and his small mouth hung just barely open, breathing quietly. Peeking just over his forehead, the first strands of undoubtedly bright green hair peeked out. With one deep breath in, the baby shuffled slightly, a tiny, fragile sounding noise came with his breath out.
At the moment, he wasn't sure how to feel. He was incredibly awed by the adorableness of the small face and even smaller noise, but he was also suddenly overwhelmed with sadness as he thought of how much Hana and his mother would've squealed and fussed over the small person. He felt a sudden anger and protectiveness at the thought of anyone ever doing to this innocent bean what people, what his father, did to him. And he had a sudden sense of dread and fear at the idea that Hisashi and Inko now had another child. A new child. A child of their own. What if- what if they decided they didn't need him anymore? What if they started ignoring him in favor of their own child?
A thousand thoughts and emotions that were less then fun buzzed around his brain as he stared at the small face. Silent seconds ticked by, and Tenko lost track of how much time passed by. Seconds? Minutes? Surely not hours.
He didn't snap out of it until there was a sudden movement in the small face. The button nose scrunched up and the mouth closed, a small squeak came out. Then, there were eyes blinking up at him drearily.
Big, round, emerald green eyes, just like his mothers, but the same piercing gaze that said you had every ounce of his attention as his father's.
Tenko blinked back in surprise.
Something about the perfect combination, the pure innocence in the gaze, the immediate trust that grew with every lazy blink, had all those fears and doubts out of his head as fast as they appeared. Something about the small smile that scrunched the cheeks underneath wide, happy eyes, told Tenko everything would be alright, and had tears in his own eyes. And for the first time in maybe his whole life, they weren't tears of fear or sadness. They were the happiest tears he'd ever cried.
This tiny person was apart of his family. He would grow to be his little brother, a child he was supposed to care for and protect, which was an idea even scarier then his quirk. And yet those bright green eyes were smiling like the world was perfect.
Because right now, for the baby, the world really was perfect. This was perfect.
And at that moment, he silently promised himself that he would do everything in his power to make sure things stayed that way for his little bean.
When he heard Inko's voice tell him the name, her voice laced with tears of her own, he felt a smile on his face stretch wider then it had in a long time.
"Welcome to the family, Zuku," he whispered, not sure if his voice could go any louder right now.
This was his little brother.
Izuku Midoriya.
