Chapter 6:

The forest was a blur as Jasper moved at supernatural speed, trees flashing past like a green and brown smear. He picked up a fist-sized rock and hurled it at Bella, who instinctively raised her hand, her shield snapping into place just in time to deflect the projectile. The rock ricocheted off an invisible barrier, falling harmlessly to the ground. ground.

"Good reflexes," Jasper said, his Southern drawl thick with approval. "You're getting better at this." Bella nodded, her breath visible in the cold air, despite her growing control over the shield. She had started to feel more comfortable around Jasper, finding in him a mentor and confidant far removed from the rest of the Cullens. "Thanks," she replied, her tone casual but curious. "Can I ask you something?" "Of course," Jasper replied, picking up another rock but holding it instead of throwing it. He studied her, his red eyes glowing faintly in the dim light filtering through the trees.

Bella glanced at the rock in his hand and then back at him, her curiosity piqued by something she had been wondering about for a while. "It's about your diet—and your eyes," she began hesitantly. "You don't follow the same diet as the Cullens, do you?" Jasper's expression grew thoughtful. "No, I don't," he admitted, lowering the rock. "The Cullens' 'vegetarian' diet leaves a vampire perpetually hungry and weaker than they should be. That's one of the reasons Aro allowed me some leniency in my feeding range. I feed on humans, but I choose my prey carefully." Bella's eyes widened slightly, but she didn't recoil. "Who do you feed on?" "Criminals," Jasper explained. "The worst kind of people—the ones who bring suffering and darkness to others. My coven, Peter and Charlotte, and I made a pact. We'd only feed on those who deserved it. It doesn't make us saints, but it's a compromise I can live with." Bella processed this, her mind swirling with the implications. "That makes sense," she said slowly. "And your eyes—they're red because of the way you feed?" Jasper nodded. "Yes, blood from humans causes the eyes to turn red. Animal blood doesn't have the same effect, which is why the Cullens' eyes are golden. It's one of the many differences between our diets." She felt a strange sense of relief. "I like your reasoning," she admitted, surprising herself with the admission. "Maybe I'll follow your lead." Jasper raised an eyebrow, his curiosity evident. "Really? You'd consider feeding like I do?" Bella nodded, her decision firming in her mind. "If I'm going to be a vampire, I want to be strong. I don't want to be constantly fighting hunger or feeling weak. And if I can make a difference, even in a small way, by choosing my prey... then that's what I'll do."

Jasper's eyes softened. "You're braver than you know, Bella," he said quietly, his admiration evident. "But let's focus on your shield for now. You're making great progress."

Thanksgiving came and went very quietly with just Charlie and Bella celebrating in their home. Despite the trouble that seemed to lay ahead they enjoyed the small feast Bella prepared and cheering and throwing popcorn at the football games played that day. It was for them the perfect way to celebrate the day.

The semester finals loomed large over Bella's life, but they provided a welcome distraction from the chaos surrounding her. She spent more time at home with her father, Charlie, much to Edward's chagrin. The tension between them culminated in a heated argument one evening. "I don't see why you need to be here so much," Edward said, his voice tight with frustration. "You're supposed to be with me." Bella stood her ground, her eyes flashing. "I need to study, Edward. Finals are important to me, and I want to spend time with my dad. Can't you understand that?" Edward's expression darkened. "You're avoiding me." "Maybe I am," Bella shot back, her patience wearing thin. "But this is my life, Edward. I need space." The argument left her feeling drained, but being at home brought a sense of normalcy. She and Charlie decorated the house for the Christmas holidays, stringing lights outside and adorning the tree with cherished ornaments. They watched their favorite Christmas movies together, laughing at the same old jokes, and spent hours baking cookies, the kitchen filled with the warm, spicy scent of gingerbread.

One evening, while they were both sitting at the dining table, Bella pulled out the ancient law book that Esme had borrowed to her. "Dad, I've been reading this old book about vampire laws," she said, showing him the yellowed pages. "It's... complicated, but I think there's a way to use it to our advantage." Charlie leaned in, his interest piqued. "Let's take a look," he said, flipping through the pages with her. Together, they carefully separated some of the stuck pages, uncovering archaic laws and forgotten rituals. The potions recipes that were found that evening seemed like fate might be lending a hand. The first potion shortened the change time for a human to vampire the second potion was for better control for a newborn vampire. The positions would give them the needed upper hand if they could find all the ingredients some of them were very strange, but Seattle might just be the best city to look for them as well as online.

Bella invites Jasper to come and hang out with her and Charlie over the course of a few evenings, allowing them to build a tentative friendship. Jasper's demeanor away from the Cullens was relaxed, even charming. He spoke candidly about his past, though he remained careful not to reveal too much about the darker aspects of his history. "So, Major Whitlock, huh?" Charlie asked, intrigued by Jasper's military background. Jasper smiled, a touch of pride in his eyes. "Yes, sir. I served in the Confederate Army before I was turned. It feels like a lifetime ago." Charlie nodded, clearly impressed. "I can see why Bella trusts you. You seem like a good man, Jasper." Jasper glanced at Bella, a warm look passing between them. "I'm doing my best," he said quietly. "We've been working on her shield, and it's coming along well." Bella nodded enthusiastically. "He's been a great teacher," she said, grateful for the progress they had made. "And it's nice to have a place where we can work without... other distractions." Charlie grinned. "You're welcome here anytime, Jasper." Charlie paused for a moment then asked "Jasper there is just one thing don't understand why you told me, "He 4said, "Vampires, the Volturi—this whole thing is dangerous! You're putting my life on the line along with yours and Bellas. Can you tell me what you were thinking?"

Bella took a deep breath, her eyes softening as she stepped forward. "Dad," she began, her voice steady but laced with a plea. "I didn't tell you to scare you or put you at risk. I told you because I need you in my life, forever. I need you to understand what's happening, to be there for me in a way you couldn't if you were in the dark."

Charlie shook his head, still grappling with the enormity of what he had been told. "Be there forever? How am I supposed to do that, knowing there are things out there that could kill me just for knowing they exist? Are you asking me to be changed also?"

Jasper, who had been standing quietly, his posture calm yet resolute, stepped in. "Charlie," he said, his voice carrying a quiet authority. "There's more to this than just the danger. Bella has a gift, a shield that protects us. Gifts like these can be inherited. We think you might have something too, something that could help us."

Charlie's frown deepened, a skeptical look crossing his face. "You think I have some sort of... vampire power? That sounds ridiculous."

Jasper nodded, acknowledging the skepticism but not backing down. "I know it sounds far-fetched, but it's possible. If Bella has inherited her ability, there's a chance you might have a latent gift as well. Something that could be vital in our fight against the Volturi."

Charlie rubbed a hand over his face, clearly overwhelmed. "And what if I don't? What if I'm just a normal guy who's way out of his depth here?"

Bella moved closer, her expression softening as she looked at him. "Then we'll figure it out together," she said gently. "You don't have to have a gift to be important to us. Your support means everything to me. I trust you, Dad. I believe in you, and I want you in my life."

The tension in Charlie's shoulders seemed to ease, though confusion and worry still lingered in his eyes. "I just need some time to process all this," he muttered. "It's a lot to take in."

Bella reached out, placing a hand on his arm. "Take all the time you need," she said. "We're here for you, no matter what. We'll face whatever comes together. I promise."

Jasper gave a small nod of agreement, his gaze respectful. "We don't want to pressure you into anything, Charlie. Just know that your knowledge and support could make a real difference. The Volturi use fear and secrecy to control people. By knowing the truth, you're not just a bystander; you're an ally. And we need every ally we can get. Yes, by changing you are more affective, but the choice is yours."

Charlie sighed deeply, finally sitting down on the worn couch, his face a picture of hesitant acceptance. "Alright," he said slowly, looking up at them with a tentative resolve. "I'm not saying I like this, but I'm here. For both of you."

Bella's face lit up with a smile, her eyes bright with relief. "That's all I need, Dad. Thank you." Jasper smiled too, a hint of admiration in his gaze as he looked at Charlie. "Welcome to the team, Charlie." As the room settled into a more hopeful silence, the old clock continued to tick, marking the moment when Charlie, despite his fears and doubts, chose to stand by his daughter in the face of the unknown.

Several days later, at Alice's insistence on having a girls' overnight shopping trip to Seattle was met with mixed reactions. Esme tried to make the trip enjoyable, hoping for some bonding time. Rosalie participated reluctantly, her disdain for Bella thinly veiled. Alice, her usual bubbly self, alternated between excited shopping and veiled warnings to Bella about the dangers of not staying with Edward. "Look at this!" Alice exclaimed, looking at sparkling dress in a shop window. "Bella, it would look amazing on you!" Bella forced a smile, trying to focus on finding gifts for her friends and family. She picked out a thoughtful present for Charlie, something special for Angela, and even managed to find a meaningful gift for Jasper. The rest of the shopping felt like a chore, but she knew she had to play along.

The invitation to the Cullen New Year's Eve party arrived the day after the shopping trip. It was beautifully crafted, hinting at an elaborate event with champagne and fireworks to ring in the New Year. Bella read the invitation with a sinking feeling, knowing exactly what Edward had planned. She called Jasper, her voice tight with anxiety. "We need to talk. Can you come over?" Jasper agreed, and soon he was at the Swan house, where Bella, Charlie, were sitting at the dining room table, poring over the ancient law book. "We need to come up with a plan." Charlie sighed.

Over the course of the evening, they discussed strategies to help Bella and Jasper navigate their predicament. The ancient law book provided unexpected insights, revealing ways to manipulate vampire customs and laws to their advantage. They devised a plan that included Bella accepting Edward's proposal on New Year's Eve, much to her and Jasper's dismay, to buy time and gather support.

Returning to the Cullens later that night, Jasper was briefed on the party preparations. Carlisle, always meticulous, had assigned him to oversee security. Jasper suggested additional protection, proposing to contact Peter, Charlotte, as additional security for the event.

"Good idea," Carlisle agreed, his tone calculating. "We need everything to go perfectly."

Jasper nodded, his mind already working on logistics. As he left Carlisle's study, he caught Esme's eye. She gave him a small, knowing nod, her quiet support clear. They both understood the stakes, and the need for subtlety in their actions.

As the days passed, Bella continued her shield training with Jasper at Charlie's house, the bond between them strengthening with each passing session. They practiced diligently, both aware that the coming weeks would test their resolve and their trust in each other. The ancient law book remained a constant companion, its secrets slowly unraveling in their hands.

And so, as the New Year approached, the stage was set for accepting an engagement to Edward that would challenge everything Bella and Jasper were fighting for. The shadows of their pasts intertwined with the fragile hope of a future free from the constraints of the Cullens, and together, they prepared to face whatever lay ahead.

In the quiet moments before sleep, Bella found herself thinking of Jasper, his calm strength and unwavering support a beacon in the uncertainty of her life. She knew that whatever happened, they would face it together, and that knowledge brought her a measure of peace.

As the snow fell softly outside, blanketing the world in a silent promise of new beginnings, Bella felt a spark of hope. The future was uncertain, but with Jasper by her side, she felt ready to face it, one step at a time.
