For a really long time, all of them just stared at the blank screen in front of them.
"To tell you lot the truth, I'm not surprised." Frypan said, and everyone agreed with him. "But I'm glad to finally get some answers as to why we're put in that maze."
"I'm glad to know that there are people brave enough to fight against WCKD and help us." Jake smiled.
Newt didn't say anything, as he felt something wasn't right. He wasn't satisfied with the answers and wanted to know more. He felt like the video kept getting vague as it reached towards the end.
'Maybe I'm thinkin' too much. We're finally free. Instead of searchin' for answers from the past, I should just enjoy this moment and plan for the future.'
Which reminded him about how he was soon going to be moved to those greener surroundings Janson told them about.
'Actually, gettin' to live within the real nature.'
Newt forgot his worry and smiled at the thought of being there with his friends and... Tommy. He looked at him and saw that the other guy also didn't look satisfied with the answers he got. Just when Newt was about to distract him by changing the topic, Minho said, "Bullshit. It's all political bullshit. I don't care about that. I wanted to know about where we came from. What were we doing before we were sent into the maze?" He was frustrated with not getting answers, too.
"Leave it, man." Frypan said. "What are we gonna after finding out? It can't be anything good."
"Yeah, anyway, we are going to have real home soon." Winston joined the conversation. "I'm happy not knowing."
Newt was about to agree with them, but then he remembered that he knew Thomas before coming to the maze. They were even friends. He wanted to know more about that, but couldn't. He understood Minho's frustration and patted him on his shoulder, indicating, 'I understand. I want to know, too. But let's just not be sad about it.'
Minho sighed but didn't say anything. Thomas looked like wanted to say something but chose not to.
After a long discussion about their plans for what they're going to do once they reach their new homes, in which Newt, Minho and Thomas didn't participate, a soldier came in.
He looked confused to see them talking and not watching the video. "Did the documentary ended? Am I late?" He muttered to himself, to which the Gladers politely didn't reply, not wanting to let him know that they skipped a lot of part and made free time for themselves.
He escorted them back to their dorm after taking them for dinner. There was no sign of Teresa there, to which Janson told them she was currently watching the documentary that they saw with the other Gladers, so they didn't think much about it.
After everyone got freshen up and settled in their bed, Thomas followed Newt up to his bed and Newt didn't complaint about it. They both laid down onto their stomach with elbows propping up to see Minho in front of them with the same position looking at them.
"You wanna dig up our past?" Thomas asked. So the reason why he stayed silent before was so that he could to talk to both of them later about it.
Minho smirked and Newt smacked both of theirs head lightly. "No."
Newt knew his friends were planning to snoop around here for a long time, all while he was coming up with a plan to stop them.
"Newt-"
"Tommy, I said no. Don't go around causin' trouble here. This isn't our Glade. We follow their rules here. And anyway, how you gonna find anythin' related to our past?"Newt didn't want to ask that question because he already knew their answer.
"Hack into their system." Minho stated.
"Absolutely not." He sighed. "Let it go, you two. It's not imp..." He couldn't complete the sentence. It was important. He did want to know more about himself and his friends.
"Newt, we have to know why we suffered all those years." Minho tried.
"But we do know. We're immune to that virus that's makin' everyone crazy."
"..."
"..."
Newt let out a frustrated noise and turned on his back facing the ceiling. He knew that trapping them inside the maze just because they were immune didn't make any sense and the worst thing was Minho and Thomas also realised that, like always. Three of them somehow always came up with the same thoughts, but their way to work on it was different.
Newt always thinks about the consequences and tries to have minimal to no damage, making sure there's no unnecessary problems.
Thomas on the other hand seems like doesn't even think. He just jumps into action on instinct, always doing what he's thinking, not caring about the consequences.
Minho lies somewhere in between. He does consider the consequences and only takes chances when he knows he can handle them, which is most of the time.
"You know something isn't right, then why are you ignoring it." Thomas looked down at him with hope that Newt'll agree with their plan.
Newt frowned at him and turned his stare at Minho's upside down face, hoping he would realise why they shouldn't create troubles in places they are not familiar with. Where they have no idea what's going on.
"I'm not ignorin' it." Newt directed at both of them. "But I don't want to cross these people. You have no idea about how powerful they are or what they can do. Remain on their good side.
I don't want you to go runnin' around in the dark, where you have no idea what can happen to you." Newt unintentionally rubbed his hand over the cloth he wrapped around his wrist. Minho's eyes widened and then became sad.
"I get it, Newt but-"
"Newt's right, Thomas." Minho said, to Thomas's surprise and Newt's relief.
"What?"
"We have to think about everyone's safety also. We can't create more problems for them out of our selfishness."
Newt suddenly seemed to realise he was touching his wrist and immediately removed his hands, turned to face the wall. "Good. I'm sleepin' now."
Minho also turned on his back with one arm beneath his head and the other covering his eyes as he went to sleep before saying, "Good that."
Thomas, oblivious to what was happening, got confused and looked at the person lying beside him. He couldn't see Newt's face but realised that something made him sad and decided to also drop the topic. He also laid down facing Newt's back. His hand reached out to Newt, but he didn't know if it would be okay, so he closed his eyes just like that.
Newt didn't sleep, as he had a whirlwind going on inside his head. It wasn't that he was scared to get into action like Minho and Thomas. If one had to compare, he would come out as the most daring of them all. But it was so only because he never considered his well-being. He would do the deed even if it meant he could die doing it. Death didn't scare him. What scared was the thing that would happen if he didn't die.
Hanging by a single thread, waiting for death but not being able to die. 'Pathetic. Can't even die properly. Just let go.' said a voice inside his mind. And he seriously considered letting go for a moment, but then he felt something.
He turned around to see Thomas's relaxed face and his hand clutching Newt's T-shirt while he slept. As if scared that Newt may disappear.
Newt sighed and slipped an arm beneath Thomas and one over his waist and pulled him closer. Thomas didn't react and just nuzzled into Newt's shoulder.
'What was I even thinkin'? Why was I thinkin' that?' He thought.
He remembered why he always plays safe. Why he doesn't create unnecessary problems? So, that he could protect his friends and didn't add onto their troubles. So that he doesn't have to see Minho's expression when he found him a year ago in maze ever again.
He felt some ache in his heart, but it went away when he felt Thomas's arm settling over his waist. He closed his eyes and felt the presence of Thomas beside him. The feeling making him comfortable enough to forgot all the worries and fell into deep slumber.
Thomas felt sad, thinking he might have said something that ticked both of his friends off. But soon he felt Newt's embrace pulling his closer. He tried to keep his eyes closed as he felt his heartbeat fasting up. But he soon found himself to be comfortable being so close to Newt. He nuzzled into his shoulder and slid his arm over Newt's waist. He forgot what he was discussing earlier. At this moment all he cared about was Newt, not his past, not these people, not what would come tomorrow. If he could just stay like this forever... 'It would be nice.' He thought as he fell into sleep.
