April tells Jackson that they're expecting a girl. (Based on the alternative/deleted scene from s11)
As much as she wants to be a little bit mad at Arizona for accidentally telling her the sex of the baby, she can't. She feels so lucky to even be pregnant again, and to know that this baby is healthy, but knowing that they're having a girl? A little piece of both her and Jackson (because despite everything that has transpired between the two of them, she's grateful that she can give him a second chance at being a parent), that she can teach to ride horses and play dress up with? It makes her feel so giddy and excited - something that she hasn't felt in a very long time.
She knows that she wants to tell Jackson. Even though they'd agreed to not find out the sex and be surprised, she thinks that he would want to know now, and she doesn't want to keep anything from him. They were finally on a good page again and had been communicating much better, and the last thing she wants is to ruin that and risk another potential custody battle.
April finds herself at the hospital gift shop, buying an adorable little onesie with the words 'It's a girl!' on it, and smiles as the cashier places it inside a gift bag for her. Its a little risky making such a purchase at Grey Sloan (considering none of her co-workers are very capable of keeping their mouths shut for long), but she's grateful to not bump into any other surgeons whilst there.
She finds him later on in the day, just as he's finishing performing a liposuction surgery, and thinks it's the perfect time to give the gift to him. (He hates liposuction, so she figures anything would put him in a good mood after that) He spots her almost immediately, and tries his best not to worry that something might be wrong (because he's been doing a lot of that lately), until his eyes drop to the small perfectly-wrapped bag in her hand and his expression changes to one of confusion.
"Hi...uhm...so I found something out today - accidentally! I swear, and I figured you would want to know, because I don't want to keep secrets from you, and I don't want to be mad if I know and you don't know and you find out from someone else...because, well, that didn't go over so well last time, and I'm really excited about this, and its okay if you're not, because I know it doesn't matter either way as long as they're healthy, and-"
"April, breathe," He chuckles, feeling the need to cut her off before she can cause herself to pass out from lack of oxygen.
"Right, sorry. I'm just- I'm nervous, I don't know why I'm nervous?" She shakes her head for a moment, biting her lower lip gently before letting out a deep breath and awkwardly handing him the gift bad.
He takes it off of her gently, finding this both amusing and a little anxiety-inducing (because who knows - maybe she could've hidden another restraining order in there for whatever reason), and carefully takes the item out from the bag. His expression softens as soon as he takes in the words on the tiny onesie inside, and he feels a flutter in his stomach as he takes the information in.
"It's...a girl?"
April nods, giving him a warm look as she tries to hold back some of her excitement. "She's a girl."
Jackson soon finds himself beaming, feeling both overwhelmed and over the moon. He wonders if she'll be just like her mother - kind-hearted and always willing to throw herself head first into any situation, or more subdued and perfectionistic like himself. "Wow...I...thank you for telling me."
They both look at each other in silence for a moment, taking the information in. It's the most connected they've felt in months, and he can't help it when he closes the distance between them and pulls her into a hug, allowing themselves the opportunity to truly celebrate this together. She leans into it, remembering how much she's missed feeling this close to him, and grateful that he's just as ecstatic as she is.
Neither of them are sure how long they stand like that for, soaking it all in, but they eventually pull away after one too many people walk past them. The atmosphere between them changes once again, and they find themselves feeling awkward around each other like before. He finds himself wanting to reach out a hand and touch her stomach, but he doesn't feel he has the right to do that anymore, so he decides against it.
"I should get going, but, uhm, keep ahold of the onesie for us? I thought it could be her coming-home-from-hospital outfit when the time comes."
"Yeah, of course. Thank you, again."
She nods, her dimple popping in the way that it does when she offers a closed mouth smile, and they hold eye contact for a moment, before she awkwardly waves and walks past him. He watches as she does so, and smiles softly to himself, feeling like everything is going to be okay and like he can't wait for what the future has to hold for them now. Maybe this wasn't what he pictured their family life to be like, but he can't bring himself to ruminate on the what ifs and the what should've been when he's this happy.
