The evening arrived. Paul was the first one to the Mexican restaurant that Alexander chose out. He was familiar with them since he'd been there a few times with Perry and Della. He was still worried about Perry and the meeting with Della's friend earlier this afternoon. He'd talk with Della in the morning and see if he can show up to the next appointment. She might let him.
Paul thought of checking in with Perry after the meeting with Alexander Benson was over. Of course Perry was interested, but it was a better idea to stay with Ada until she felt better and they could try again.
From what Perry didn't know his primary doctor was on vacation, so that's probably why he didn't hear back, Paul guessed. He could mention it tonight when checking in. Maybe Della already checked in, but if she did, he can still do it himself.
This was a connection to George Mason, but Paul was interested in hearing the information Benson had for him to pass over to Perry. Of course Perry was interested in the meeting tonight for dinner, but it wasn't a good time because of Ada being sick and all.
Maybe she would need medication after all. Paul did hear Perry and Della talking about treatment for both himself and Ada, but that made sense to him. He felt bad for Ada because she's never been sick in a day of her life until a couple months ago with no contact with Perry and her friends.
He remembered in this last case with the car accident, Dr. Webber probably prescribed something for Perry, but wasn't so sure when he had to stop taking whatever Webber had for him. If it were him who was in the accident instead of Perry, it made sense to take something because you never if or how long the pain would last. He could talk about that with Perry another time, or maybe it could be tomorrow. Maybe he'll stop by Perry's house sometime tomorrow and they could talk about that, even if it means personal information.
If this happened to him, of course it made sense Perry and Della would be on his side to be supportive like he is now with Perry. Ever since Perry hired him for the first time, it took them time to get to know each other. After the first few meetings with Perry, Paul found out that Perry was easy to work with. Della was there before he was, so it was easy for her to say if you asked anything.
Paul offered a table for two until Benson showed up. He able to put in his name.
"Mr. Drake, there's no need to put your name in. The person already put his name in a few minutes ago."
"Thank you. What is the name?"
"Alexander Benson. I'll show you the table."
"Thank you, sir."
Paul saw Alexander was waiting for him.
The server left while he let Paul and Alexander talk for a while and look at the menu.
"So glad you were able to come, Mr. Drake."
"Same with you. Just call me Paul."
"What is there to know about this person you mentioned over the phone?" he asked.
"I work for Mr. Mason's son, so this was how I was able to track you down."
"Where is his son tonight?"
"At home. He was interested in coming over and join us, but something changed. Maybe you can set something up with him," Paul said.
"You can pass it over unless you want to give me his contact information."
"I'll have to talk with him about that first. Tell me what Mr. Mason did when he worked on cases," Paul told him as the waiter returned and asked for their orders.
"You mean what kind of cases he worked on?"
"Yes."
"I didn't stay with Mr. Mason for the entire case he worked on. It was because of my family members at the time got sick and died. I doubt he was able to find someone else to take over where I left off."
"Sorry to hear about your family at that time, Alexander. Do you prefer Alex or just Alexander?"
"Both ways is good enough for me. I did work with Mr. Mason on a case that had something to do with a retail store. The store manager had to close for a month because of a shooting. It turned out to be him who was shot."
"I wonder if his son knows about this case."
"You'd be surprised, Mr. Drake. These cases are very old, just to warn you. Some of us might not be around anymore," Alexander told him.
"I know. His son wants to know who killed him."
"I understand. Just tell him to stay away from that case I told you about. I doubt the people who worked there at the time probably aren't alive anymore," Alexander replied.
"I'm sure he knows that by now, but wants to give it a try. He's representing Mr. Mason's wife."
"Wow. Was his wife involved with any of the cases?" he asked Paul.
"He says no, but both of them were accused for the murder of George Mason."
"How did they react?"
"His mother wouldn't murder anybody, including her own husband, Alexander. His son said something about her meeting a friend for lunch."
"Is she still living alone?"
"No. They're talking about putting the house on the market, but moving in with him and also pointed out to me she feels lost at the house with nobody to talk to expect for herself. This could be why she's sick right now," Paul told him.
"I understand about safety. I hope she feels better."
"They're trying to set up appointments for counseling. He's still trying to recover from a car accident he was recently in."
"I thought I heard about that case. Is he okay?"
"Yes, but we've been told he still has a long way for recovery."
"What about the car? Do you know anything about that?"
"Yes. The car is in the dump now, but his son is still waiting to hear from his primary doctor about when he could start driving again, but they're keeping her car so he wouldn't have to buy a whole new one."
"Sorry to hear about that. I followed the case as well. So what is his doctor doing now?"
"He's locked up," Paul said, thinking of Dr. Webber.
"Good. He deserves it, I guess."
"It looks like his son is already finding a case to finish where Mr. Mason left off that didn't get solved. I'm not sure if he's heard about this case or not. He says that he doesn't know much about what George Mason did before he was born," Paul said.
"I understand that. Some of those cases were too dangerous. This is why we don't want him to get an idea to finish stuff for him, Paul. We just need to protect him. He has talked with anybody else?" Alexander asked.
"I think so, but I can't remember the name of the person he talked with. When we had that last case of the car accident, Perry somehow made a deal with the people who hit his car. I didn't learn about it until recently when the case ended."
"What was that deal and did it work?"
"Yes to both questions. The deal was they pay for us and his car."
"That's definitely a dangerous case, Paul. Just tell him to stay away from the cases George Mason worked on since they were like that."
"He was in the courtroom one time and thought there was a person murdered his father. He says he's missing something, so this is why he wanted to restart the case."
"I'm sure Mr. Mason probably told him the same thing."
"I don't know about her, but I only met her once. Perry says she's a very nice lady."
"That's what I heard from a long time ago, Paul. We shouldn't have let George keep those files he had at home and Perry see for himself."
"I'll try to see him at home tomorrow. He's taking a day off."
"He sounds like he needs one."
"Yes. I talked him into it since Mrs. Mason is sick."
"Sorry to hear that."
Their meals showed up and then they were able to eat in silence.
Before picking up his knife, Paul asked, "Are we going to keep in contact if you ever come up with something else?"
"We can do that. Maybe Perry can talk with me too."
"I'm sure he's interested in you as well. Thanks for the warnings."
"You're welcome."
Then they didn't say much after that. Paul will definitely share with Perry for sure. He wondered if the other investigator Perry might've talked with before that counseling appointment had any luck.
He offered to pay for both meals.
"Thank you, Paul."
"You're welcome."
A few minutes later, the waiter returned with the bill.
"Enjoy your evening," the waiter said and left the bill next to the table to take orders.
"We'll talk again soon," Alexander told Paul.
"We sure will. Thanks for the information and warning. Nothing scares him off any case."
"Especially this one, Paul. Drive safely."
"Same with you."
On the way home, Paul couldn't get the information Alexander Benson had given him, especially the warnings for Perry. He had a feeling this was a bad idea, but understood Perry wanted to know what happened with George. He guessed even Ada warned him about the same thing. Did she know the story? Paul was curious. Tomorrow he'll drop by Perry's house.
