Ch. 10 A Curtain Unveiled
The tension is high as a foreboding air hangs in the empty cemetery, a tension that can be felt before a battle takes place. Serah is on her knees, shock and fear evident on her face, hands covering her face. Akio, shaking with a mic of shock and fury, stares forward with rage burning in his eyes. A knot twists in his stomach as the image appears to almost stop before him.
Legoshi puts all the strength in him to push his punch further against the human-like wall before him. Yet the man remains unfazed, as if the punch with Legoshi's gauntlets doesn't register to him. The obsidian haired man smirks with arrogance, then hits Legoshi with his palm with barely any effort.
Legoshi flies past Serah, the whites of his eyes are shown as he is unconscious. He hits the brick wall with a loud smack. Serah cries out in panic and shock "Legoshi!" as she runs towards his unconscious form.
Akio immediately raises his guard up as he prepares a stance to attack. The obsidian man smirks in response as he tenses his muscles, readies his own stance, and mocks "Do you think an old fool can match a Testa?"
Akio raises his guard as the obsidian man dashes with unattural speed with a punch ready. Akio, in a deep state of concentration, moves out of the way of the punch and counters with a palm strike. The obsidian man is pushed back a little as he smiles maniacally as his eyes glow with bloodlust. Akio readies a stance as they stare at each other, ready to fight.
As the clashing of fists are occurring, Serah is busy trying to wake Legoshi up. She grabs his shoulders and shakes him as she calls out in desperation "Legoshi! Legoshi, wake up!"
Legoshi remains slumped as he groans in pain, yet he remains unconscious. Tears well up in Serah's eyes as she worries for Legoshi's life, afraid that he might die. Trying to fight the knot in her stomach and the choking feeling in her throat, she holds her hands over where the obsidian man punched. Him. A bright green glow emanates from her hands as she tries to summon what magic she could muster.
Akio and the obsidian man notice the green glow as the obsidian man says with a sadistic grin "Yes, she has woken up!"
Akio asks in shock "Serah, how are you…?!"
Before Akio could even react, the obsidian man dashes past him and towards Serah with a crazed smile. A mixture of sadistic glee and malice lights his eyes like a fire. HE pulls a fist back as he readies another attack as he screams "Maiden!"

The letters of the title 'Beastars' appear with every accented note of the piano as the blue background starts showing small ripples of water matching the accents. It then shifts into a scene of Serah wearing her hair down and wearing a loose-fitting long-sleeved white button-up and a calf-length brown skirt on a rocky shore of the ocean with a town in the background.

A wave splashes and sprays in front of her as a flashback in the background shows behind her of her younger self and a woman with medium-length bright blue hair wearing a pink sundress and a male wolf with a bodybuilder body wearing a tank top and shorts as they play in the shallow part of a beach. A small tear falls down the teenage Serah's cheek as the wind blows her hair back with white petals blown in the wind

The scene changes to Legoshi wearing a red short sleeve hoodie and black shorts looking at his right paw while standing in a graveyard with vibrant flowers on the tombstone in front of him. A flashback in the background shows the first time he met Serah in his almost devouring with the moon glowing in the sky. The current Legoshi now faces forward with a look of determination as the wind blows his fur with blue petals in the wind.

A quick scene of Cherryton Academy with the silhouettes of Jack, Haru, Bill, and Juno, who are all smiling, appears before a quick shadow overcast like a train passing by an electrical pole changes the scene.

The scene changes to a small town next to the ocean with the silhouettes of an elderly human, wearing a white martial arts gi, with a stern expression, and an elderly woman, wearing a yellow kimono, with a gentle warm smile, the same shadow appears again to change the scene.

A final scene change shows the Black Market with the silhouettes of Gouhin and Louis appearing, with Louis facing away with a small side glance, as a lion's shadow starts to appear behind Louis, almost like a phantom ready to consume him. A slide transition switches the scene to a water-painted version of the crossroads of the city.

Serah and Legoshi are walking side by side in a casual stride down the middle of the road as the many characters are standing and waving at the two including Legoshi's roommates and club mates, Haru, Louis, Gouhin, and Serah's father. It ends with the two walking past spectral silhouettes of Leano, Serah's mother, and a white-cloaked woman with long flowing white hair peeking out and a small smile peeking under her hood.

A wipe transition changes Serah into a bright yellow ball gown with shoulder-length yellow gloves and Legoshi wearing a blue and white with yellow accents 3-piece suit as they both dance a ballroom dance to the music. They are in space on an invisible floor with brilliant stars and cosmic colors dancing around them as they twirl and spin around with the Earth in the distance.

They both stop as they turn back to their regular clothes with a beach sunset behind them, their faces close together as they stare lovingly into each other's eyes. They lean in closer, getting ready to kiss as small blushes appear on their cheeks. The screen fades to black with a bright shooting star flying in an arc across the screen as the music ends.
Time slows down for Serah, as if the whole world has been forced to a near pause. Yet Serah seems to move normally, she looks around in panic and confusion, As her gasping for breath can be heard in silence.
The questions spinning around in her head give her a bad headache, a throbbing pain on her temples. Everything that happened starts to set in as her shoulders lower from an invisible weight, heavy laden. She is only able to be distracted when a gentle hand touches her shoulder.
"It's okay. There's a way out of this." A gentle and calming voice reaches Serah's ear as a gentle hand touches her shoulder. Serah jumps as she looks where the hand touched her shoulder, finding a person that surprises her.
The person she sees is a human female of an unnatural beauty with flowing long white hair, her glowing ancient silver eyes looks at her with a gentle stare. She appears to be wearing a regal hooded gown of a clean white fabric with golden highlights.
The ethereal female says in an apologetic tone "I'm sorry this happened. The powers you have are not supposed to exist, but you can use them because of me."
Serah looks at her hands and asks "Why are you the reason I can use magic? Why is all this happening?" The woman can feel the confusion and desperation in Serah's voice as she bites her lower lip.
The woman replies with a somber tone "I wish I could explain more,but I'm at risk of being detected by more Testa. All I can say is that I crossed a boundary due to tragedy, and it altered the original course of this world."
Serah couldn't even begin to process it until the woman takes her hands and asks in a rushed manner "Do you want to learn how to use your magic? To protect him." The woman gestures to Legoshi as Serah was sweating from the nerves. The heat from the sun doesn't even touch her, time remaining still.
Serah looks towards Legoshi's unconscious form and says with noticeable hesitation "Y-yes. Please teach me."
The woman nods her head and says apologetically "I'm sorry for rushing things, but despite the current conditions, time is not on my side." She then moves Serah's head so their foreheads are touching as she notes "This should speed up the process." A flash of delicate light appears where their foreheads touch as Serah widens her eyes as she feels knowledge flow into her head.
The woman moves her head away as she says in a rushed tone with a hint of excitement "Okay, here's a really good defensive spell, this'll force him to taste his punch."
Time starts to move slowly as Serah holds her hands out towards the obsidian man with a focused stare, energy surrounding her finger tips. As the obsidian man resumes his charge, he doesn't notice the time stop as his manic glee shows in his crazed smile. Serah calls out in an incantation voice "Barrier!"
A transparent-like barrier surrounds Serah and Legoshi as it appears like crystal-like glass in a hexagonal pattern. The obsidian man's fist hits the barrier and bounces back with equal force. Serah grunts as she puts her stamina into the barrier that cracks, but remains up as it shines in the sun. The obsidian man still holds his manic grin, but a twitch of his eyebrow shows his sudden frustration.
The obsidian man says with a venomous tone "Well, well, the little brat is full of surprises."
Akio stares in shock as he sees the magic being used before him, everything inside him screaming that this shouldn't be happening. Without much time to think, he gets up from his knees and moves in front of the barrier quickly. Getting into a defensive stance with his arms up on guard, he readies for another attack when the obsidian man makes a move. Despite the confusion and worry causing him to sweat badly down his back, he uses all his willpower to keep himself from shaking.
The obsidian man's smile turns to a sneer as he exhales steam from his nose and starts to charge at Akio again. They clash fist for fist, the impacts of their fists make small shockwaves as the pressure releases causes bursts of wind to hit the barrier. Akio tries to uppercut the obsidian man as he takes the hit on the chin and retaliates with a right straight. The area around them starts to swirl as the wind causes flowers and dust to swirl in a small dust tornado. Serah holds her ground as her guard is still up, waiting for an attack to hit her barrier.
The dust slowly settles as she hears panting and gasping for breath, seeing the both of them a few feet away from each other. Akio is gasping for breath as he keeps his guard up, his bruised fists and arms slightly shaking. A trickle of blood leaks from his mouth as he keeps his eyes focused on the obsidian man. The obsidian man is breathing deeply as a few scuff marks appear on his arms and clothes, yet he now bares his teeth out in rage, growling coming from his throat.
The obsidian man roars in rage as his eyes start to appear like swirls, black and orange swirling and mixing in a center knot of anger and hate, mixed with excitement. His voice starts to shake the area around him as the various pictures and flowers start to shake from the vibrations. Akio becomes tense as he can feel energy swirl in the man's fists as he readies to charge with his head down. Yet before the obsidian man could begin his charge, a small ball of magical energy hit his stomach, the speed surprised both Akio and the man.
As the obsidian man is being pushed back further towards the opposite wall, Akio turns to see Serah breathing with difficulty as she holds a staff of a silver color. The head of the staff appears wooden as its hook-like shape has a glowing green jewel where the head of the staff meets the body. Serah has to hold the staff with both hands as she points it towards the obsidian man. Sweat pours down her face and arms as she gasps for breath, some of her stamina depleted from the use of the Reflect spell. The obsidian man snarls at her as he holds his stomach, pain speeding from the place where he got hit as he starts to shake.
"Maiden, you'll regret doing that. You should've…!" A face of subdued shock appears on the obsidian man's face as his shaking body takes a few steps back. The obsidian man says with a tinge of fear "I'll come for you Maiden, when the time is right. We'll take back what was stolen from us!" The obsidian man jumps into the air with great strength away from them just as a sheep policewoman and human policeman run up to Serah, Akio, and the unconscious Legoshi.
The policewoman asks with concern "Mr. Otowa, the priest reported some noise and we got even more concerned when people were running away from strange smashing sounds and wind. Is everything okay?" Serah turns to them in worry as she is tending to Legoshi as Akio looks at them with a blank expression.
Akio then gives a calming smile as he says in a disarming tone "Everything is fine, just a strong wind is all." The cops look around as they see a slight mess as they look unsure.
The human policeman asks with doubt in his voice "Are you sure Mr. Otowa?" Akio nods with a disarming smile as the police, with trepidation, slowly walk away as Akio takes a deep breath and walks up to Serah, who is using her healing powers on Legoshi.
Akio says with a calm voice "Save your energy, you can do it at home." Serah stops the flow of energy as her arms fall as she tries to keep her breath in check as all that has happened is processing in her mind.
Serah asks "Why did you lie to them?"
Akio replies "The Testa are not something normal people can handle." Akio stares at Serah with a contemplative stare as he then asks after a few seconds "How long…have you had them?"
Serah looks at Akio, then her hands in front of her face as she replies with an unsure expression "I can't remember when, but I noticed strange things happening…"
*Flashback*
Cherryton Academy
Home Ec class
Serah adjusts her apron and hairnet as she prepares to start cooking the dish the teacher is instructing, yet her classmates on the same table wouldn't stop talking about something she doesn't bother to understand. Despite her blank face, she has a slight strain on her forehead as a slight vein bulging as she waits for the water to boil on the stove.
"So, I was like "You wanna wear that?!" and she started to totally freak out like, it was soo hilarious. Hahahahaha!" The slight whispered chattering about nonsense starts to bug her as the laughing starts to repeat in her head. A memory of the obsidian man's laugh pops into her head randomly as she looks at the slowly boiling pot.
The vein on her forehead bulges a little as she tries to ignore it, but the laugh seems to pierce through. The pot seems to boil as she stares past the pot as the laugh seems to tap into her mind, her frustration ready to boil over.
Suddenly a small geyser erupts from the pot as everyone scrambles, the teacher asks in alarm "Is everyone okay?!" The girls nod their heads as they use their sleeves to cover themselves from the water spray, Serah stares with a slightly unsure expression.
*Flashback End*
"That's when I started to notice little things that always seem strange, like small wounds healing or strange moments with static or candles. Do you know why I have this power?" Serah asks with uncertainty as her and Akio, who is carrying Legoshi on his shoulder with one arm, are walking down the street back to the house.
The two stop as Akio stares into the distance and explains after a bit of silence "I'll explain everything tonight, too many passing ears." Serah looks around as she sees the various people come and go as she nods and takes a deep breath. Akio then explains "One thing I will say…this will bring a lot of trouble…trouble that I prayed never reached you."
Night
Otowa Household
Legoshi wakes up with a start as he sits up with the covers of the blanket falling off of him, looking around with a start as the confusion sets it. Standing up on top of the futon as he looks around the dark guest room in confusion as he tries to remember what happened before he passed out.
Remembering the obsidian man, Legoshi was about to leave the room when Serah, wearing a white blouse and shorts opens the door and says with surprise "Legoshi! I'm glad you're awake."
Legoshi asks with deep concern "Serah, are you okay?! What happened to that strange man? What is…"
Serah interrupts him by placing her finger over his snout as she explains "He ran away for some reason, we're safe right now." Noticing his rapid breathing, she guides him to the door across the hall and into a small lounge. She guides him to a couch as she says calmly "Just take some deep breaths, we're fine."
The bright yellow wallpaper and the bouquet in the middle help to add to the relaxing atmosphere as Legoshi replies "I got knocked out easily…I failed you."
Serah shakes her head as she notes "Even with your gauntlets, you would still have difficulty. Grandfather had difficulty with that man, so it would've been difficult no matter what." Legoshi still appears somber as he looks at his hands in contemplation.
"If you don't enjoy the taste of defeat, then train and get stronger." The two turn to Akio who has closed the door behind him as he moves to sit on a chair across from Legoshi. He elaborates "Defeat shouldn't deter you from bettering yourself, the fact you were willing to face an impossible challenge is, while not smart, is very admirable."
Legoshi looks at Akio with a mix of hesitation and amazement as he asks "Would…would you be willing to train me?"
Akio looks at Legoshi's desperate face as he contemplates the request, Legoshi starts to sweat nervously as he wonders if he's being too forward. Legoshi only takes a calming breath when Akio states "That is business for another time, but first, I wanna talk with the both of you about what happened earlier."
Serah sits down as Akio explains "I should start first with the man from earlier, we don't know much about the Testa, only their goal. They are seeking the power of the current Maiden, for what is a mystery to us."
Legoshi asks "What…is the Maiden?"
"The Maiden is our family ancestor that founded this town that helped open the door between humans and the carnivores and herbivores. What people didn't know is that she had…magical powers. Nothing like the ability to alter reality and such, but she could command the basic elements and such for any situation. That is how she helped our village prosper to this day, and is how Serah now has her powers, as she is a decendant of the original Maiden."
Legoshi looks at Serah as she says "My powers weren't strong at first, but only after the incident with the Shishigumi is when they started to grow stronger than before."
Akio then states "And while I want some answers to that story, Serah is now in a state of vulnerability now that her magic is awakening. The Testa will stop at nothing until they have her power."
Serah asks "How long have they been after the Maiden's power, and why has no one ever seen them before?"
Akio takes out a book with a leather cover, a symbol of a flower with five petals is all that is stamped on it as he explains "As far as our family history shows it's that only Maiden's who have significant magical power are targeted by Testa, the other members are usually left alone. And the Testa don't usually act out in the open, they always seem to keep to the shadows and where there are little people around, they never make a scene."
"Have you…faced them before?" Serah asks with concern under her curiosity.
"Only a few times, when your mother started to show powers." Serah shows surprise as Akio explains "There was one Testa who was relentless in taking Kiary, I could only fend them off so much with all my skill and strength until they started to become too much. Then at some point…they just stopped."
"Why did they stop, what made them stop?" Legoshi asks as a desperation leaked from his voice.
"Honestly, I have no idea. They just stopped attacking us, and Kiary was never attacked after she graduated high school. Then she died and now all this has happened. I wished that you never had to deal with this." Akio faces Serah as he holds a somber expression. Serah stands up and places her hands on Akio as a form of comfort, he doesn't change his expression, but appreciates Serah's gesture.
"What do we do now?" Serah asks with concern, she feels unsafe as she imagines the obsidian man trying to kidnap her when she's alone. The 'Shishigumi incident' hasn't fully been put behind her as she remembers the feeling the boss gave her. While it wasn't that of a sexual predator, it felt almost the same as she could imagine how it would feel to be eaten like an exquisite dish.
Akio stares at the ground in contemplation as the gears turn in his head, until he says "We must continue as normal, but I must also train you in fighting, as the Testa will not stop until you are taken." Serah shows concern as Legoshi thinks on the situation and the implications of the training.
"Do we have time for martial arts training? We're only here for the festivals and then we have to return to school for summer classes." Serah asks with concern as there are only five days till the festival, and the festival lasts only a week.
"While you don't have time to learn any techniques, the stances and exercise can be just as pivotal. How to hit your opponents and how to move and dodge attacks will be the basis of this training." Akio explains as Legoshi looks at his hands as he clenches them as his gauntlets appear again.
"Is this another part of the Maiden's powers, these gauntlets?" Legoshi asks as Akio examines the gauntlets on Legoshi's forearms. Serah wonders the same as she doesn't seem to know where the armor came from or how she did it in the first place.
Akio then answers as he has a confused expression "I'm not sure, what little information on the original Maiden is partially filled with speculation and what little she wrote on the family journal. She never really wrote much about herself and what she could do and what caused the Maiden to be the target of the Testa." Akio stands up and states "In any case, it's almost dinner, and we need to be up early for training, I don't want any slacking…understand?"
The two nod as they exit the lounge and head downstairs, all of the events from before still repaying in their minds, to see a large dining table that was able to fit all of them. The brown wood is a dark solid color and seems to be holding strong despite showing a little age. The center of the table holds a small blue glass vase that has two white lily flowers, the petals almost glows under the light of the ceiling light. The table is covered in various dishes that range from rice to mashed potatoes to salads, the table is covered in home cooked meals.
"Please, sit down and help yourself, I made sure there is enough for everyone." Yona Otowa says excitement as the family starts to take from the various dishes onto their plates. Serah and Legoshi sit down at the open chairs and start to take from the dishes, including a casserole and a cheese dish. The scent of the food and the gentle lights gives a warm atmosphere, not from the heat, as the family and guest start to talk about various topics.
As Legoshi takes a bite of cheese filled macaroni casserole, he thinks warmly 'This feeling…it's been a while since I last experienced this. I feel this warmth in my chest…is this nostalgia? I feel…happy. I guess I could never forget this warmth in my chest, when eating a home cooked meal…with a loving family.' He listens intently at the casual conversations going on between the family as Serah is talking to her cousins while Akio and Yona are chatting between each other.
Fuka asks with curiosity "So, how's school going, have you been having fun at your club?"
"School's going well, I'm having a lot of fun at the Gardening Club." Serah replies warmly.
"A Gardening Club?! What's it like, what are the plants like?" Fuka's enthusiasm is evident in her voice.
"The flowers are beautiful, we keep so many different kinds. I even planted a few white lilies." Serah explains with a wide smile.
Hana says with excitement as she has a spoon full of rice in her baby utensils "Pretty flowers!"
Serah takes out her phone and shows Fuka a picture of a part of the rooftop garden and explains "My friend Haru and I take care of a lot of flowers, we even give them to other clubs for displays."
Fuka replies with energy "Wow, it looks just like your mom's garden. Grandma still takes care of it from time to time, and I help!" Putting her hands on her waist, Fuka has a confident expression which causes almost everyone to laugh. Fuka pours as she continues to eat her food and grumbles to herself "It's not funny…"
"Grandma, do you really take care of Mom's flowers?" Yona nods as she feeds Hana some rice with a spoon.
"Of course Serah, your mom spent a lot of time and energy on that garden, and wouldn't want that beautiful part of her home to die away." Yona says with a warm and gentle expression. She feels a tinge of nostalgia as memories of her daughter replay in her mind.
Fuka then stands up and declares with excitement "That's it, we need to visit your old house, you've gotta see how the garden looks now!"
Everyone was slightly stunned from the sudden declaration until Serah started to hold back a laugh, Legoshi was confused why she was holding her hands over her mouth. Serah was unable to contain it as she burst out laughing, a louder laugh than Legoshi ever heard from her. Everyone was then surprised from the laugh until Maho and Yona started to join in as Fuka asks in confusion "Hey! What's so funny?!"
Everyone else then joins in as they all start laughing for a few seconds until they all start to calm down as Serah says "Sure, I would like that. And we can show Legoshi the rest of the town." Fuka nods in excitement.
They all finish their dinner and get ready for bed for the night, changed into their pajamas, Serah and Legoshi set up their futon's on the floor of the guest room. Serah smooths out her sheets as the events of the day set in completely, Legoshi asks as he looks out the window "Are you okay?"
Serah sits down on the made futon, thinks for a few seconds, and answers after a small sigh "Not entirely, I'm mostly just tired and overwhelmed…and confused." Legoshi gives her a confused look and she elaborates further "People did say that I've changed since my mom died, that I was closed off. But I don't think that was entirely the Testa's doing."
Legoshi nods and replies "I get it, when someone you love dies…it leaves a wound." Serah looks towards Legoshi to see him staring out towards the moon, his back facing her. Having an idea on what he's thinking about, she stands up and moves behind and gives him a hug on his neck from the back.
Serah then begins to sing…

Legoshi lets himself be enveloped by the melodious lyrics of the song as he closes his eyes and the darkness of the room settles. The song is lulling like a lullaby as he lays his head on Serah's head, in which Serah does the same. As Serah sings the last verse, they both fall into silence, a silence that is calm from the trouble of the near surprise conflict from earlier today. Despite the peace being disturbed, they can both hold a moment of calm no matter how temporary it may seem.
Serah says in almost a whisper "Let's get ready for the morning, Grandfather will be ready to train us till we're exhausted."
Legoshi asks as they get into their futon's "How is he gonna get us stronger in about a week or two?"
Serah replies as she looks into his eyes "I'm not sure, but if Grandfather is sure, then he must have a way."
"You have a lot of faith in him." Legoshi says as a statement, amazed and confused in his voice.
"He raised me, he and Grandma were there for me when Dad was arrested." Serah looks towards the ceiling as she remembers all the times her grandparents helped her till she moved to Cherryton Academy. As she eventually drifts to sleep, she doesn't notice the shadows in her memories, as if they are moving and slowly grow in her mind.

The spotlight switches to Serah as she starts dancing to the beat while wearing a white dress in heels, swinging her hips in rhythm before ending in a twirl.

A collage of characters get a spotlight to dance including the large and imposing Gouhin, the serious and suave Louis, the graceful Juno, and fun loving Jack as they all wear suits and dance to the music of the song before ending with Ibuki on a fancy chair drinking tea.

The cast dances to the music as they party out in their own style with the Shishigumi drinking alcohol together like a party ending with Legoshi and Serah dancing a waltz in rhythm to the song.

The spotlight only shows Legoshi and Serah dancing which eventually changes to the white haired girl replacing Serah in an instant and then Legoshi changes to a white haired man in a similar tux until it ends with their bow. It then changes to Legoshi dancing with energy by himself until he finishes with a disco finish.

The scene changes to the two white haired humans in front of a beach on a sunset before a black hooded person is eating at a dining table and laughing maniacally.

Images pass by that show a yellow bracelet on a desk and then Serah's mother and father in a photo. It then changes to still images of Legoshi and Serah in front of a white background then adds more characters as they get closer to the camera. It then finishes with Legoshi and Serah up close as they look at each other with warm smiles.
Beastars
AN: I need a more stable writing schedule, though work does take up a good portion of my day, responsibilities need a lot of management. Please review for critiques and improvements…I need help.
chapter question: what aspect of Beastars is something that didn't need to exist or was an unnecessary addition? I love Paru's story, but it did have a few problems that made it messy towards the end.
