Max' POV
"Before we begin, Max, should we call Natalie?" Vi asked.
This is our niece and our whole family is very attached to her and protective, including me. I'm worried that the cousins are all going to go off halfcocked and make things a thousand times worse. Natalie has always been a voice of reason, and this is her daughter, but I don't think she should see the videos.
I took a deep breath and said, "I think we need to see it before we make that decision. There may be things on here that Nat really shouldn't see. This could be hard to watch just judging by her current state."
Vi looked at me, face stricken, and left to go be with Tris. Good decision, I know Tris needs her more than she needs to see the videos.
I looked to Four and he pressed play.
The first video showed Tris walking through the Abnegation Sector. Someone approached her from behind and she turned to see Marcus Eaton. Four gasped. You could see his arm was on her shoulder.
Marcus: "Beatrice."
Beatrice: "Marcus."
Marcus: "Did you ask your parents about coming over to assist me?"
Beatrice: "Yes, my mom said I have too much to do already with my volunteer hours. She said it would be selfish of you to keep me from my family during my only available free time."
Marcus: "Perhaps I'll talk to your father. I'm sure he would agree that it's selfish for you to not assist someone in... need."
Beatrice: "I'm going to be late for my volunteer work."
Beatrice sped away from him.
The next video showed an image of a boy and then Tris' fist flying out and punching him in the nose, blood gushing everywhere.
I looked at Four and he just looked stunned.
The third video Tris is walking towards Abnegation sector, and I can see what I think is the Prior house ahead. All Abnegation houses look the same so it's hard to know for sure. The door of the house across the street opened and Marcus Eaton walked out and approached Tris. He reached out again to put his hand on her shoulder. Considering touching is frowned upon in Abnegation, he sure does a lot of it.
Marcus: "Hello Beatrice. You've turned into a lovely young woman."
Beatrice: "Hello Marcus. You've turned into a creepy old man."
Marcus: "Mind how you speak to your elders, girl!"
A girl stepped out of another house and called for Beatrice, and she walked quickly away from Marcus.
Four waits a minute before pressing play on the fourth video. I can see the anger in his eyes as he says, "If he's the one who attacked her, I WILL kill him!"
I stared into his eyes for a moment and said, "You'll have to get in line."
We both nod, a silent agreement that we will take Marcus down for this.
The fourth video is different. Beatrice has just pulled herself onto a train and came face to face with a factionless woman. I looked at Four and his expression was grim. I could tell he knew her.
Beatrice: "Evelyn Eaton?!"
Evelyn: "It's Evelyn Johnson now. What are you doing jumping trains, Beatrice Prior?"
Beatrice: "Well, I'm not abandoning my child to his abusive father."
Evelyn: "You watch your smart mouth. Go home, girl. Bad things happen to nosy little girls who wander my territory at night."
Beatrice: "Does he know you're not dead?"
Evelyn: "Hmph, you don't honestly expect my son to have any interest in a pathetic little girl like you? I know my son and he can do so much better."
Beatrice: "He definitely deserved better parents."
Evelyn glared at Tris and I'm sure Tris glared back, then Evelyn jumped off. I told Four to wait before starting the fifth video.
"Were you aware she was alive?" I asked.
Four angrily spat out, "Yes! The video file has the date, this must have been right after I found out. She left a cryptic note in my apartment. I was curious to see who it was. I told her I didn't want anything to do with her."
By now I've figured out that Four and Beatrice knew each other in Abnegation. As a leader, I of course know Four's real name. I've also surmised that they both have feelings for each other.
He plays the fifth video. Marcus is on the steps of the school, seemingly waiting for Beatrice. This is beyond disturbing. I can't imagine how gross this is for Four to watch.
Marcus: "Beatrice, just the girl I was looking for."
Beatrice: "Why?"
Marcus: "I have a proposition for you, a way for you to be helpful and give... service."
I just threw up in my mouth a little and Four looks ready to kill. Lynn and Marlene both approached Tris at that point and led her away talking about needing help in their math class. Thank God!
Four looked at his screen and said, "The next video is the last. This is the one where we find out what happened tonight."
"Let's just get it over with so we know what we need to do." I ordered.
We see what must be Tris' house, she's heading for the back door and leaving probably to head to Yellow House. As she was locking the door, there was a sound and a hand showed in the camera. There was the sound of a struggle. I think he's got his hand over Tris' mouth so she can't scream. It seemed she'd been drugged or knocked out. Marcus' face shows up and he's carrying her into his house.
Four is rocking back and forth, hands shaking on his head, and repeatedly saying, "No. No. No."
Marcus put her on the floor. He's in plain view of the camera. We heard him rip open her shirt and he pulled out a knife. The camera is too close so we can see Marcus but can't see what he's doing. I think he cut her bra. He then cut her pants and ripped them off. I'm about to just leave and go kill him, until Tris comes to.
Beatrice: "What do you think you're doing, Marcus?"
Marcus: "I'm teaching you a lesson. You need to be put in your place. After I'm done, you'll never mouth off to me again."
He just dropped his pants, and we heard Tris' gasp.
Beatrice: "Please don't make me do this."
He's moving towards her and Four is reaching out to stop the video when Tris grabbed a knife from her boot and aimed it sure and true, right into his heart. He fell back and Tris was getting up. Blood seeped from his wound and Tris was still for a moment before the camera lurched and she threw up all over the floor. She ran to the door, but realized she had no clothes on and grabbed Marcus' grey coat and put it on. The rest of the video is her running through the factionless sector, jumping on the train, and jumping off to get to Yellow House. Then Four's stellar behavior for her being late, which he corrects once he realizes it's Beatrice and she's hurt. Tris' must have turned the camera off at that point.
We're sitting frozen. Neither of us seem able to speak. After about five minutes of stunned silence, Four says, "Thank God, he didn't touch her. She'll be okay. Please let her be okay."
"She may be physically okay, but I'm positive Marcus is dead. She clearly acted in self-defense, and according to her cousins, she's very good with a knife with sure and true aim. She's got enough Abnegation in her that she's going to be struggling mentally with having killed someone. Even more, she killed your father and she's going to feel guilt over that no matter how justifiable it was." I explained to him.
He looked at me incredulously and asked, "You think I'd hold her responsible for killing him? You think she thinks that? If anything, I'm proud of her training. I'm proud that she defended herself... that he couldn't succeed in his disgusting intentions!"
Four was standing now, and sunk his fist through the wall by the kitchen. I understand how he's feeling. Right now, I'm more concerned about how we proceed from here. I'm going to have to contact Andrew, Natalie, and Candor. Candor is going to need to run the investigation because Dauntless is too close with her being my niece. I got my phone out and dialed Jack Kang, leader of Candor. He must not have been sleeping as he answered on the first ring.
"To what do I owe the pleasure of this late-night call, Max?" he asked.
I knew that in order to help Tris, we needed to be completely honest. Jack Kang is one of the good guys, after all. He's also divergent. The best plan of action would be to meet at Candor. The phone lines weren't secure, and we didn't want to have this conversation overheard. We agreed to meet in an hour at Candor, in Jack's apartment.
I then called Natalie's emergency phone that she's not supposed to have in Abnegation. I asked for Andrew to meet me at Candor and Natalie to come to Yellow House. Tris needs her mom.
"Four, you're coming with me to Candor. You're the one with the videos on your laptop. Let's go talk to the girls." I stated.
We walked to the bedroom and Four knocked on the door. We entered and when Tris saw Four, she started rocking back and forth saying, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." on repeat. Four walked over and sat next to her. He wrapped his arms around her gently, kissed the top of her head, and said, "There's nothing to be sorry for, Beatrice. I'm so grateful that you're safe. You're all that matters."
She looked at him with disbelief, but before she could say anything, he leaned forward and kissed her. Vi and I quickly exited the room.
"How bad was it?" asked Vi.
I held her and said, "It wasn't as bad as it would have been if Bumble Bee weren't so skilled with a knife. He was going to try to do the unspeakable to her, but he didn't take her boots off. She had a knife. She got him right in the heart. I'm ninety percent sure he's dead."
She furrowed her brows and asked, "Who?"
"Marcus Eaton." I stated.
Her face mirrors the same shock that I'm sure was on mine and Four's faces. I told her we were going to Candor to meet with Jack Kang and Andrew, and that Nat was on her way to Yellow House. Her expression turned to worry, and I assured her that it was clearly self-defense.
Four came out of the room along with Tris who looked a lot better. I told Vi and Tris to stay the night at Yellow House and for Tris to get some sleep. She'd need to be questioned sometime this afternoon. I'd give her as much time as I could to rest before she must go to Candor and go through a Truth Serum questioning.
Four and I left and headed for the train. After we jumped in the car, I turned to Four and said, "That girl is my niece. She's strong, brave, intelligent. She's basically the whole package. She's loved and adored by our whole family, especially Zeke, Uriah, Brax, and Xander. If you ever do ANYTHING to hurt her, your punishment will be severe."
I've never seen Four intimidated before, but his expression says he is indeed intimidated. He took a deep breath, looked me in the eye, and said, "I would expect nothing less."
"You do realize that when she transfers to Dauntless, you'll be getting this talk at least another four times?" I asked with an eyebrow raised.
He gave a half grin and said, "Actually, a while back I asked about the midgets finding Beatrice and training her for Dauntless. At the time, Zeke gave me a look that said basically the same thing you just told me. I didn't get it at the time."
I laughed, "You better be on your toes!" We then jumped from the train and ran to Candor. It was going to be a long night.
