Okay. One last chapter to end the evening. What do you guys think about that idea? Hopefully, you guys are enjoying this story once again. Thanks again for reading, and I can't wait to see how this one turns out. After all, it takes a bunch of work to write this story.
Chapter 5
He was too excited to be an uncle to wait any longer than required to come visit his sister and nephew in the hospital for the second time, which is precisely why he decided to just get up and get to it. He decided to wake up, get dressed, and be here at the hospital the moment visiting hours opened here at the hospital…though, it seemed that he wasn't the only one. After all, he could see someone in the waiting room that he recognized: Heather Darden. The wife of Andrew Darden, Matt's best friend. So, before heading up to go see his family, Antonio decided to make his way over to see Heather. "Heather, right?" Looking up at Antonio when said her name, Heather smiled as she recognized him. "How are you, Antonio?" Heather asked, as she got up this morning to go hug him. "Oh, how's Gabby?" Antonio smiled. "Much better. Not as scared as she was the last time I saw her, based on the text messages that I got last night."
Heather agreed with Antonio, well aware of what he was talking about: how her aneurysm burst. "I know, Matt texted Andy last night to tell the firehouse that they needed prayers. He called me and asked me and the boys to do the same. We then agreed to come here and see them first thing, as we wanted to check on our friends." Antonio agreed, as that made complete sense. "Just to warn you, though…I think that there's another reason why Andy asked you to meet him here." Heather was confused when Antonio said that. "I beg your pardon?" Antonio snickered. "I think Matt asked him to get some things for the baby, as he's the only one who had a baby. I mean, someone his age. I'm a bit older than him and Gabby, so I don't know about all the gadgets. When I was raising my kids, you had to be quiet and have the baby monitor right next to you. I can't have mine on a phone." Heather agreed, though she knew that.
When she had Ben and Griffin, she couldn't use her phone as a baby monitor, either. "I couldn't use my phone as a baby monitor either, just to let you know; so, don't you dare think that I'm THAT old. Sure, Matt had kids much later than me and Andy would've liked…" Antonio was confused when Heather said that. "And he gets to say that, why?" Heather snickered. "He and Matt always had this dream where they'd raise their sons together. They had a dream where the kids would go to the same preschool, same elementary and high school; then, they would be in the same class at the fire academy." Antonio thought about it and snickered, as that sounds like something Matt would've thought about. "Unfortunately, he didn't get the memo that Hallie wasn't the woman for him." Antonio was surprised when he heard Heather say that. "Wait, I thought you were pro-Hallie? The entire firehouse was."
Heather laughed as Antonio said that, as that most certainly was the case. "Oh no, we were pro-Matt. We were happy, because he was happy. We all hated Hallie, as she abused the crap out of him. Not to speak ill of the dead, but she was wrong for Matt. I still remember when Andy said that you thought that he and Gabby were together." Antonio snickered, as he remembered that too. "God, I was so embarrassed." Heather shook her head. "No, don't be. I took it as a way for you to foreshadow it. The more people that believed they would be together someday, the more likely it was going to happen." Antonio smiled, as he liked the sound of that. "I'm just glad that your sister is okay. I can't imagine how Matt would be right now had something happened to Gabby." Antonio sighed. "You guys don't know? Her aneurysm burst." Heather got scared when she heard Antonio say that. "Is she okay? Wait, is…"
Antonio then realized that Matt didn't tell any of them. "Oh, you have no clue about anything; about whether Gabby and the baby are okay?" Heather agreed. "It was why we were coming. We wanted to see whether they were okay. God, I hope that everything's okay upstairs." Antonio agreed, as he decided to give Heather reassurance that everything most certainly was okay. "Yes, Gabby's okay. That's not something you need to worry about. Gabby's fine. She's ok." Heather agreed with Antonio, letting out a sigh of relief. "Good, I was scared that we were here to comfort Matt." Antonio agreed with Heather, though he decided to point something out. "Heather, not to be rude; but…did you happen to notice that I came in through the door coming into the hospital, rather than leaving the hospital?" Heather was confused as to where Antonio was going with this but decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.
After all, he may just be tired. "Yeah, I noticed that." Antonio nodded. "And if my sister wasn't okay, do you think I would be coming into the hospital, or do you think I would've still been upstairs helping Matt with things?" Heather then realized that, which made so much sense. Of course, Antonio would be upstairs already if Gabby wasn't with them anymore; he'd be upstairs, helping Matt take care of their son. But rather, he was here, coming in through the doors to go see his family. "So, that means that Gabby's ok." Antonio agreed, as his sister most certainly is okay. "She's more than okay. However, can you do me a favor and make sure that Sylvie doesn't come visit her?" Heather was confused, as she didn't know why. "Can I ask why? You know that we're all close here at the firehouse." Antonio sighed. "She abused Gabby on her last call. Not sure whether she's close to her or not." Heather then felt horrible.
After all, Gabby's already been through enough; but to learn that she was abused on her last shift by her partner, that just made everything worse. "Oh, I'm so sorry. Of course, I'm going to make sure that she doesn't come through. If Matt asks, tell him that I got that under control." Antonio shook his head. "I'm not even going to mention her name, as I highly doubt that my sister will be happy with me if I do mention her name." Heather agreed with Antonio, as that most certainly made sense; under no circumstances could she see Gabby being happy with him if he mentions her name. "By the way…" Going to slap Antonio's arm, Heather wasn't happy. "Ow! What was that for!" Heather looked at Antonio when he asked her that question. "You should've called Matt. I'm basically his sister, so I get to say this. Matt should've had a chance to say goodbye to Gabby, if things went wrong; and they almost did go wrong."
Antonio agreed, as he already knew that. "Oh, believe me, I already got that lecture from Matt. He's not too happy with me. That's actually why I went to his favorite coffee shop and got him a coffee, that way I can try and sweet talk my way into their room." Hearing Antonio say that this morning, Matt snickered. "Seriously? You felt the need to bribe me to get into my good graces?" Turning his head to look at his brother-in-law, Antonio smiled. "What are you doing down here? Why aren't you with Gabby?" Matt smiled. "I heard that Heather was down here and wanted to come say hi. See if everything was okay." Walking over to her friend, Heather smiled as she went to hug him. "Congratulations, Matt." Matt agreed with her and smiled as he hugged her as well. "Let me guess, you just dropped Ben and Griffin off at school; and the hospital was on the way home, or the way you chose to take home today?" Heather smiled.
After all, that most certainly was the truth. She decided to take a route home that would take her past the hospital. "I mean, I may as well take a route past the hospital. That way, I can go see my godson." Turning his head when Heather said that, Antonio was shocked. "Seriously? You do realize I'm standing right here. Do you really think that she's going to pick you and Andy, over me and a friend of hers?" Heather smiled. "We made Matt the boys'…" Interrupting the two of them, Matt yelled. "Enough!" Ending their bickering, Antonio and Heather both turned their heads to look at Matt. "Waiting room, now. We need to talk before I let you upstairs." Both Antonio and Heather agreed, making their way out to the waiting room so that they could talk before Matt let them upstairs.
Walking to the corner of the waiting room, Matt shook his head as this was the last thing he wanted to talk to the two of them about; but, they were both being incredibly immature at the moment. So, he knew that he needed to talk to them about it. The fact that they weren't going to be choosing godparents anytime soon, as they had other priorities. "Ok. Listen, I'm only going to say this once to you. And if this comes back up when we're upstairs, then you're gone. And that goes for Andy too, Heather. So, you're going to need to convey this message to him before you come upstairs." Heather agreed, as that was something she could do for Matt. "Of course. What is it?" Matt sighed as he looked at the two of them, due to the fact that this isn't what he wanted to talk about. Though, he clearly needed to: he needed to remind them that Gabby just about died yesterday. And that meant that they needed rest.
The last thing they needed was for them to fight about who's going to be godparents, when they haven't even made decisions about cribs or just what their life is going to be like when they get home. Whether Gabby wants to work, or whether she wants to be a stay-at-home mom. They haven't spoken about her recovery plan, or how much time he can get off work. So much as up in the air, that they didn't even have time to think about godparents. "Listen, I'm only going to bring this up once. I'm not going to repeat myself, especially not when I'm upstairs with Gabby and Gabe." Heather smiled, as she liked that name. "Gabe, that's adorable." Matt agreed, as it was. "Short for Gabriel Matthew." Antonio and Heather both smiled, as that was a beautiful name for their son. Though, they weren't here to talk about Gabriel's name; rather, they were here to talk about how things will be when they're upstairs.
And things will be calm and relaxed when they're all upstairs. "Ok. Like I was saying. I'm not going to repeat this, as I do not want to repeat it. You better listen, because if you don't listen to me…then I will kick you out of the hospital and our room. And that goes for you too Antonio. I don't give a damn if you were there to help Gabby in Puerto Rico while she was pregnant, I'm not messing around when it comes to this." Hearing how serious Matt was being right now, Heather and Antonio both nodded as they listened to the new father. "Gabby just about died yesterday." Antonio then realized that, as he knew that was the truth. "She almost never got to meet our son, who she risked her life to give to me. Are we clear about that?" Antonio and Heather both nodded, as they knew that was the truth. "She's very brave for what she did, Matt." Matt agreed with Heather, well aware that was the case.
And that was precisely why he was here to talk to them right now, as he needed to make sure they were all on the same page about what was expected of people if they're to visit them in the hospital. "So, the last thing I'm going to do is allow Gabby to be overwhelmed. We have a new baby, she's still coming to terms with the fact that her life flashed before her eyes and that my worst nightmare almost came true, and she's trying to spend whatever time she can with Gabriel, as she truly feels blessed that she even gets a chance to be with him." Heather and Antonio both agreed with Matt, as that was clear. "So, the last thing on our minds is choosing godparents. Hell, I still have things to do. In fact, that's why you're here Heather. You're coming here to get a list of what we wanted. When we were up in the middle of the night, me and Gabby looked at some stores for baby things."
Heather agreed with Matt. "We have a list of certain products that we're going to give you money to go buy, along with our keys. Either the both of you, or Andy and Kelly. Or hell, Andy and the boys can go to my place and put it together for us. I need things for a baby." Turning his head, Matt looked at Antonio. "You know, you could've at least done that. Get me some things so that I wouldn't have to rush to furnish a house, while also taking care of a baby. What if the worst-case scenario happened? How did you think I was going to furnish a house, while also taking care of my son?" Antonio then realized that he didn't think of that. How would Matt have furnished things for Gabe, had he not told him ahead of time. "Right, and I'm sorry about that." Matt agreed with Antonio, as he knew that he was. "And we're past it. But, I need your help. I truly do. This is a lot for me and Gabby to figure out."
Heather agreed with Matt. "How is she, otherwise? I mean, other than the aneurysm stuff. How is she with her recovery?" Matt sighed. "It doesn't help that she's exhausted from a baby who didn't sleep much. Neither of us did." Matt then realized that he smelt coffee. "Is that coffee?" Antonio nodded as he held it up. "Does this make you like me more?" Matt snickered as he went to grab it. "No, it just means that I tolerate you even more. You still owe me for not telling me that my wife was pregnant, and not giving me the chance to say goodbye to her. You know, like I probably would've wanted to do regardless of what happened between us?" Antonio gulped and agreed with Matt, as he knew that was the case. "I know, and I'm sorry for that." Matt agreed. "And you can show us that by going to get us some clothes for your nephew. After all, I don't have baby things. I'm actually headed to the gift shop."
Antonio smiled when Matt said that. "Going to find Gabe's first outfit?" Matt nodded. "I don't like that he's just wearing a diaper right now. It seems wrong. Oh, that's something else you can get for us. We need newborn diapers Antonio, or Heather. And we need them here at the hospital. If you can either get Andy to pick them up on the way here, or maybe you can go get some…that would be amazing. If I don't need to leave the hospital to get them, then that would be great. Oh, and I also need a baby seat. I know it's been a while since you guys got some of those for kids but…" Walking over to her friend, Heather smiled. "Hey, it's ok. I'll talk to Herrmann. He did it more recent than we have. And we can figure it out. I promise, we got you Matt." Matt smiled. "Ok. That's just something I need. Andy is driving my truck here, and he's getting me some more clothes. We're staying a couple more days here."
Antonio was confused. "Normally, they let you out the next day." Matt sighed. "Due to the aneurysm having burst, they want to keep Gabby here for observation a bit longer." Antonio agreed, as that made sense. Of course, they just wanted to make sure that everything was okay. "Plus, we want them to monitor Gabriel for a bit, as we want to make sure the aneurysm didn't affect him in any way. I know, it sounds crazy for me to even say that, but…" Antonio shook his head. "Hey, no. Of course, it isn't. You're worried about your son, and you want to make sure that everything is okay. Matt, that's completely normal." Matt agreed with Antonio, glad that was the case. "And I'm sure that you approve of that decision?" Antonio nodded, as he most certainly does approve of that decision. "Yes, yes I do. Now, I believe that I can be led upstairs to go see my sister and nephew." Matt agreed and smiled. "Of course, you can."
Matt then turned to look at Heather. "Heather, how about you just take it easy and relax? Maybe go get yourself a real breakfast. I know that you don't normally eat much when you have to take the boys to school while Andy's on shift, so you should make sure that you do that. I don't want you getting lightheaded when you're around all of us today." Heather smiled, as she loved that he cared for her so much. "Thanks, that's a great idea Matt." Antonio then looked at Matt when he heard that. "I thought you were married to my sister?" Matt then turned his head and looked at his brother-in-law. "Antonio, she's basically my sister-in-law. Don't you dare say anything like that ever again, are we understood?" Antonio nodded, as he was scared of Matt. "Of course." Matt then smiled. "C'mon, let's grab some breakfast, then I'll take you upstairs so that you can see your sister and meet your nephew." Antonio agreed.
Casey Hospital Suite – It was still a feeling that Gabby loved more than anything: the feeling of her son suckling on her breast, as she held him in her arms and fed him. It was the best feeling in the entire world, especially since this little boy was all hers. He was her son, and he was going to be hers forever. And even better, she and Matt were going to be together for the rest of their lives. "Yeah, there's my little Gabriel. You like feeding from mommy's breast, don't you sweetheart?" Walking into his and Gabby's hospital room, Matt smiled as he heard his gorgeous wife say that. "Well, that's a nice way to hear things." Matt said, while carrying a cream cheese bagel for his gorgeous wife. Meanwhile, Antonio came in with Matt's coffee. "Oh, Antonio, I can't have coffee." Shaking his head, Antonio smiled. "Oh, this isn't for you." Reaching for his coffee, Matt smirked as he took it from Antonio's hands. "This is for me."
Gabby looked at her brother when she heard that. "Seriously? You brought him caffeine." Matt snickered. "He's doing this to try and get back into my good graces. Trying to butter me up so that I forgive him faster." Gabby nodded, as she knew that he hasn't forgave him yet. "You are going to forgive him, right?" Matt agreed with his wife, as he would in due time. "I will, in due time. Once we're home and taking it easy, then I think I'll be able to forgive him, just not yet. I hope that's okay, Gabby." Gabby agreed, as it most certainly was. She knew that her husband needed time to forgive her brother, and she wasn't going to rush it. "The last thing I'm going to do is rush you to make you forgive Antonio faster than you can. I already pushed a child on you…again." Matt shook his head, as that was the last thing he wanted to hear. "Gabriel is our son; you didn't push him on me. Never say that again, got it."
Matt said as he made his way over to his gorgeous wife, only to place his hand on top of her head and smile as he pressed his lips to her forehead this morning. After which, he leaned his forehead against hers and smiled. "How are you feeling? You need anything from me or the doctors? The nurses? You want any pain medication?" Gabby nodded, as she could use some pain medication. "Can I get some pain medication?" Matt nodded, as that most certainly is something he can get for her. "Of course, I can get you that right now." Kissing Gabby quickly, Matt smiled as he looked at the woman of his dreams; after which, he turned his head and smiled at Gabe. "Hi buddy. Daddy will be right back. Then, you can snuggle up to me and I can give you some kisses." Matt said, as he kissed his forehead and held him close a bit. "Yeah, we'll get some guy time when I get back from the nurse's station."
Turning his head to look into Gabby's eyes once more, Matt smiled as he leaned in and kissed his gorgeous wife this morning. "I love you." Gabby agreed with Matt, as she loves him too. "I love you too. Now, can you go get me some pain meds?" Matt agreed, as he most certainly can (and will) get her some pain meds. So, he got up and went to do just that. Meanwhile, Antonio took a breath as he walked over to his sister to talk to her for the first time since she gave birth. "How you feeling? How are you and Matt doing?" Turning her head when Antonio asked her that question, Gabby smiled. "We're doing good. It was really nice to sleep in his arms again last night." Antonio nodded, as he bet it was nice for her to sleep in his arms once more. "I know you missed him." Gabby agreed, as she most certainly has missed her husband. "I didn't know how much until last night, though. I truly missed him so damn much."
Surprised that Gabby just swore in front of Gabriel, Antonio glared at her wide-eyed. "Did you really just say that in front of your son?" Gabby nodded, as she most certainly did. "Oh, yes I did. And you aren't going to say a word about it, as you already know that you're not in the best place with my husband." Antonio agreed with Gabby as she said that, well aware that was the case. "And whose fault is that? Not mine." Gabby sighed, as she knew that was the truth. It wasn't his fault that he wasn't in a good place with Matt but was hers instead. "I know, sorry about that." Antonio shook his head, as she truly had no need to be sorry. "Don't be. I'm sorry for being such an ass." Gabby agreed with her brother. "So, have you spoken to mom? Does she know?" Antonio agreed with Gabby. "She'll be coming to see you as soon as she gets here from Miami." Gabby agreed with her brother, well aware that was the case.
Though, she also knew that she needed to ask her brother about another topic: their father, who was here in a coma. "Listen, I know that dad's here in a coma." Antonio was surprised, as he had no idea that Gabby knew that. "I didn't know you knew." Gabby sighed. "I'm his other emergency contact, so I knew. Do you know what's going on? Plus, I think you said something about it yesterday. It's just all coming back to me now." Antonio then decided to make a bit of a joke. "So much, that you wanted to sing that song?" Gabby shook her head, as she knew that as much as Antonio was trying to be funny…he was failing, miserably. "Not funny, Antonio. We both know that dad is in trouble if he's here. Is he going to be okay?" Hearing Gabby ask that question as he came back into the room, Matt decided to stay quiet so that he could hear the answer. "I'm not sure yet, Gabby." Matt sighed, as he knew that was scary.
So, he was starting to wonder whether he should leave. "Gabby, do you want me to stay here?" Turning her head when Matt asked her that question, Gabby bit her lip as she didn't know what she wants. So, Antonio decided to offer to get breakfast. "How about you text me what to get for breakfast? I'll get it for you guys." Matt agreed, as he appreciated that while Antonio walked past him. "Thanks Antonio." Antonio agreed as he looked at his sister. "Everything will be okay Gabby, I promise." Gabby agreed with her brother as he said that, well aware that was the case. Meanwhile, Matt looked at his gorgeous wife, well aware that she wasn't okay. "What do you say you finish feeding Gabe? Then, you can cuddle up to me in bed." Gabby agreed, as she liked that idea. "Sweats stay on." Matt agreed, as that was the plan: for him to stay in sweats while they were here. "That was the plan." Gabby smiled and agreed.
Gabby's POV:
As I looked at the gorgeous man standing in front of me here in our hospital room, I couldn't help but think about just how truly lucky I am to have him as my husband. Matt is the most loving, caring man I've ever met and there's nobody else I'd rather have by my side to raise our family. Me and Gabe are so lucky to have him. Me, to have him as my husband; while Gabe is lucky to have him as his handsome, loving father. He truly is any woman's dream guy, but he's my reality for the rest of my life. "Did I ever tell you how lucky I am to have you as my husband?" Matt smiled when I asked him that question and nodded. "I know that I'm lucky to be yours, because I highly doubt that you would've risked your life for anybody other than me." I agreed, as that most certainly is the truth. He's the only man I would've ever risked my life to have a child with. "Got that right." Matt smiled as he agreed with me this morning.
After which, he made his way over to me and smirked as he leaned over to kiss me softly. "Listen, how about you finish feeding Gabe? Then, I'll put him in his crib and I can get in bed with you." I agreed with Matt when he said that, more than ready to cuddle up to him once I'm done feeding Gabriel. After all, that's precisely how I want to spend my day: all cuddled up to my man in bed.
