Hello Readers: And welcome to another day of chapters. Chapters which I hope you will enjoy due to the fact that I have every intention to try and make this story work. After all, I started this story by writing very short chapters on Wattpad; therefore, that means that I need to make these chapters much longer, which requires a lot of creativity. But hey, at least I have the basic outline for the story which I want to write. Just having an outline helps me a lot, due to the fact that it means that there's a story I can refer back to when I'm stuck, which is one of the major problems when I write: getting stuck. But so far, I haven't had that experience. Now, I hope that you guys enjoy the story and let me know what you think. Thanks again for reading and enjoy.
Chapter 6
Just the feeling of holding his newborn son in his arms put a smile on the new father's face, as it was something he'd never experienced; at least, not with his own child. Yes, he's done this before when Ben and Griffin were younger, as he was Andy and Heather's designated babysitter as their godfather. And thinking back, maybe he should've mentioned that to Severide whenever he complained over the fact that he wasn't chosen to be either of the boys' godfather: the responsibilities that came with being the boys' godfather. Responsibilities such as changing dirty diapers, watching them whenever their parents wanted to go out, or just doing things for new parents in the middle of the night. God, he remembers the times where he had to go to the drug store in the middle of the night, just so that he could get diapers for his friend…or when they had to take a ride on Truck 81 because Heather needed help.
Though, that wasn't when they had their first child; rather, that was around the time where they had Griffin. Or was it Ben? God, how can he forget that. They're his godsons for crying out loud, and he can't get that straight: which one of them is older. Though, he believes it's Griffin. Though, at this very moment, he truly didn't care which son was older as they weren't his concern. Rather, his wife and son were his main concern at the moment. And that was precisely why Matt immediately stopped thinking about his godsons and instead turned his attention back to his own son this morning. "Yeah, someone's tired…aren't they Gabey?" Smiling as Matt said that, Gabby loved the sound of her husband using a new nickname for their son: Gabey. It was adorable, and she just loved it. "Now that's another adorable nickname for Gabriel. Gabey." Turning his head, Matt smiled and nodded in agreement as he thought so too.
Though, he wasn't sure whether he was going to use it. "Not sure I'm going to use it, though." Confused, Gabby looked at her husband as she didn't understand why he wouldn't use such an adorable nickname such as Gabey. "Why not?" Matt smiled. "Gabby, Gabey?" He said, in short order; trying to point out that both their son's (hypothetical) nickname, as well as her own nickname were very similar. "They're quite similar." And the moment Matt said that, he realized that he made a huge mistake. "Ok. Before you say anything about what I just said, take a breath and just let me explain what I mean by that. Don't you dare let your mind wander when it comes to that." Confused as her husband said that, Gabby tilted her head as she had no idea what he was talking about. "What are you talking about?" Letting the question linger for a moment, Matt decided to put his son down in his crib first so he could rest.
So that they could all rest, as that was precisely what they all needed to do for a moment; though, he also knew that he couldn't leave Gabby's question unanswered too long, as it would mean that her mind would wander. So, the moment he had Gabriel down in his crib, he began to answer Gabby's question while smiling at her. "Ok. Let me just start by saying that I love your name, just like I love our son's name. That's never going to change, nor are we going to change Gabriel's name. We chose that name for a reason, as it was to honor the sacrifices that you made for us. You risked not meeting our son and leaving me to raise him on my own. So, under no circumstances do I want you to think that I want to change our son's name, as I don't. The name is set in stone." Gabby agreed with her husband, well aware that was the case as she watched him sit down at the foot of the bed as he looked at her.
Upon doing so, he reached for Gabby's hand and smiled as he held it while talking to her. "However, I just think that Gabey and Gabby are a bit too close to one another. Even though we're honoring you in his name, do we need to have nicknames so close to each other?" Gabby snickered, as she now understood what Matt meant when he said that. He just meant that he didn't want to risk them getting confused in the future. "Let me guess, you're thinking of the future when Gabe can understand what we're saying. When he can listen for his name and know when he needs to come see us." Matt agreed, as that was precisely what he was thinking about: the future, and when they were going to have to call their son to come see them. "Precisely. That's exactly what I'm thinking about: how we're going to differentiate you and Gabriel in the future. And I don't want to change your nickname from Gabby. I love it."
Smirking, Gabby extended her hand to get her husband closer to her, which is precisely what Matt got. He got closer to her and smiled as he proceeded to lean over the woman he loves, only to place his hands on her neck as he kissed her softly. "I can't wait to hear you moan my name again when we're in bed. I've missed you so much. Missed the feeling of you making sweet love to me. It's going to be so great when I get cleared to make sweet love to my loving husband, who I get to be with for the rest of our lives." Matt agreed with Gabby as she said that, prior to moving to lay down in bed with her once more. After all, he wanted nothing more than to hold the woman he loves in his arms; so, as he opened the covers to their hospital bed, he laid down close to his gorgeous wife and smiled as he brought her body against his chest this morning. "You like this feeling?" Gabby nodded, as she loved this feeling.
The feeling of Matt being against her in bed is perfect, and exactly what she wanted to feel at the moment; so, she moved close to him to make sure that he didn't go anywhere. "I don't want you to move from this position for a while. It's so comfortable, and I'm glad that you're here with me." Matt agreed with his wife, though there truly was nowhere else he wanted to be right now. "Believe me, there's nowhere else I'd rather be right now, other than with you in this bed." Gabby agreed with Matt as he said that, smiling as she laned in and kissed the man of her dreams. Meanwhile, Matt tugged the covers up on top of the both of them and smiled as he held his wife close to him. And while he wished he could just think about his wife in the moment, the action of bringing her against his chest also made him remember her brother…and how he had to text her their breakfast order. "You know, you brother is waiting."
Confused as Matt said that, Gabby proceeded to place her hand on his arm and rubbed it as they held each other close. "What are you talking about?" Matt smiled. "We said that we'd text him what we wanted for breakfast." And just like magic, it was as if nurse Maggie Lockhart knew when to come in. "If you guys are thinking about having breakfast, there's a menu that you can order off of. You have no need to go to the cafeteria to get something to eat, Gabby." Turning their heads to look at Maggie, both of the new parents smiled. "Oh, I didn't know that." Maggie agreed as she made her way over to Gabby's side table, only to open the drawer to get the menu out for them. "Here, this is the menu that you guys can order from." Gabby agreed with Maggie and smiled. "Thanks." Maggie nodded. "I can check on Gabriel if you want." Matt shook his head, as that was okay; after all, he just laid him down in his crib this morning.
Therefore, he didn't believe that there was a need for a nurse to check on him when they both just checked on him. "Me and Gabby just checked on him when she fed him." Maggie agreed. "I was thinking more his stats. I know that Dr. Letts requested that we check his stats every once and a while, just to make sure that he was okay. So, while I'm here." Gabby agreed, as she liked that idea; after all, she was worried about what effect (if any) her aneurysm could've had on Gabriel. "Matt, I think we should let her. I want to make sure that there's no side effects from my pregnancy." Confused, Matt didn't understand what his wife was talking about. "What do you mean, baby?" Gabby sighed. "I mean, the aneurysm. We don't know what an aneurysm pregnancy can mean for a baby, and whether it affected him. So, I guess…I just want him to be checked out. Maybe by a neurologist or something to make sure that…"
Matt sighed, as he knew that was something Gabby may worry about. However, she just gave birth and shouldn't have to worry about that right now. Right now, all she needed to worry about was herself and her recovery. "Hey, Gabriel's okay. He's here with us, and that's all that matters. Right now, he's just a baby and I don't think that your aneurysm will have any effect on him." Gabby nodded, as she hoped it wouldn't. "I hope you're right." Matt sighed, as he could tell that Gabby wasn't convinced. So, Matt decided to turn his head and looked at Maggie. "Maggie, do you mind making us an appointment with Dr. Letts when she's next available? I think that may get Gabby to calm down and take it easy, which is what she needs to do at the moment." Maggie agreed, as she thinks that's true. "Of course. Just to let you know, Natalie will be your doctor today." And it was just then that Natalie came to join them.
Walking into Gabby's room, Natalie smiled. "I was hoping to tell Matt and Gabby myself." Smiling at Natalie, Matt was extremely grateful that she was their doctor. "Gabby, do you mind if I get up for a moment?" Gabby was confused but agreed. "Of course." Letting him get up this morning, Gabby watched as Matt made his way over to Natalie. "Of course, you ask to be assigned to us. Right?" Natalie snickered, as Matt knew her too well. "You know me too well, Matt." Matt agreed. "I mean, we've only known each other for over a decade." Matt said, as he went to hug his long-time friend from when he was still with Hallie. "God, I ran into your mother-in-law? God, I have no idea what you still call Helen." Natalie shook her head. "Ex-mother-in-law. It's complicated. She's Owen's grandmother, but not my mother-in-law anymore." Matt agreed, as that made sense. She was a widow now, after all.
Something he's glad that he's not. "How are you doing? I know it's been a couple years now." Natalie agreed, as it has been. "It was right around this time that Jeff died. So, it's been about five years." Matt shook his head, as he still couldn't believe that it's been that long. Then again, it's been seven years since Hallie died. "Believe me, I could barely believe that it's been seven years since Hallie died this past May." Turning his head to look at Gabby, Matt sighed. "Not that I was really counting. I mean…" Gabby shook her head, as Matt knew that she was okay with that. "Matt, you know that I'm okay with you marking that anniversary. It was a hard day for you, and I don't want you to feel like you can't mourn her. I mean that." Matt agreed with his wife as she said that, smiling as he made his way over to her. After which, he leaned over her and smiled as he proceeded to kiss her softly this morning. "I love you."
Gabby agreed with her husband, as she loves him too. "I love you too." Smiling at each other, Matt and Gabby both took a moment for themselves as they wanted to just take in this moment where they recognized that they were still with each other. Though, after giving them a moment, Natalie decided to tell them why she was here. "So, listen. I wanted to talk to you guys for a moment before you guys start getting visits with everybody." Matt agreed, though he could also tell that Natalie just put her serious tone on. So, he decided to sit down with Gabby and wrap his arm around her. Meanwhile, Natalie moved to the end of the bed to talk to her friend and his wife. "So, listen. In the aftermath of yesterday's events, I believe that it would be prudent for me to ask that you both just stay here a couple days. You can rest, take it easy and let us take care of you while we monitor Gabby." Gabby agreed, as that made sense.
Of course, the doctors were going to want to monitor her after yesterday's events. "I wouldn't expect anything other than you guys wanting to monitor me after yesterday's events." Natalie agreed, as that was precisely what she knew Gabby would say. She knew that Gabby would understand why they wanted her to stay longer. "I hope you know that this is just a precaution, and under no circumstances is this us saying that something's wrong. We just want to take precautions." Matt and Gabby both agreed, as they knew that was the truth: this is just a precaution, and nothing is wrong (as far as they know). They also know that they will have to do some tests, which they're more than okay with due to the fact that they want to just take it easy. But, that just means that they'll get a chance to spend time with each other and their newborn son. "I'll keep you guys up to date on when you can leave, though."
Matt agreed, as he appreciated that. "Gives me and Gabby some time to take it easy and relax, as you guys take care of us." Natalie smiled, as she was sure that Matt was going to enjoy that: time where he can just hold Gabby in his arms, while not having to worry about anything other than her and Gabriel. "Listen, you take it easy and just relax with each other. Maybe turn on the TV and watch a movie." Gabby smiled as she looked up at her husband. "We didn't do our traditional Valentine's Day movie marathon this year." Matt shook his head, as he wasn't doing that. "Nice try. If you wanted to do that, then you should've come here." Turning her head to look at Matt, Gabby decided to give her husband a bit of a reality check. "And had I done that, do you think that we would have our son right now?" Taking a breath, Matt knew that was the truth. They probably wouldn't have Gabriel in their life if she came back.
And he felt horrible for that. "You want to talk about that when we get breakfast? Or just when we're alone?" Gabby sighed as she looked at Matt. "Maybe when Natalie is done checking up on us, we can lay down side-by-side and talk about it before breakfast gets here?" Matt agreed, as that was reasonable. So, that was precisely what the two of them were going to do today.
Laying down side-by-side shortly after Natalie left them to have some time alone with each other, Matt and Gabby both sighed as they knew that this wasn't a conversation that was going to be easy. Rather, it was going to be hard due to the fact that it would be filled with emotions and (maybe a bit of) frustration. Though, Matt was determined to not let his frustration boil over this time. "I promise you right now, I'm going to control myself and make sure that my frustration doesn't boil over. The last thing I want is for you to feel like you need to be defensive with me, when we just want to talk to each other." Gabby agreed, as she appreciated that. "I appreciate that, Matt. Thanks." Shaking his head, Matt smiled as he leaned in and kissed his beautiful wife softly. "It's ok. I promise, everything will be okay." Gabby agreed with Matt and smiled, very happy that they were about to talk right now.
Though, she decided that she was going to be the one who starts the conversation. "Listen, can we just talk about what you said? How you wanted me to come here for Valentine's Day, so that we could have the movie marathon I want to do today?" Matt agreed, as that was precisely where he wanted to start this conversation. "You start, ladies first." Gabby agreed with her loving husband and smiled, more than ready to start this conversation with him. "So, listen. I hear what you're saying. Let me just say that. I get what you're saying when you say that. If I wanted to do that, yes, I should've come here to be with you so that we could do the marathon." Matt agreed with his wife, as that was the truth; though, he could hear it in her voice that there was something else. "However, you're also forgetting some crucial elements that doesn't make that plausible in light of what you know now." Matt agreed, as that was the truth.
Based on what he knows now, that wouldn't have been plausible. "Around Valentine's Day, I was still in my first trimester…which made it dangerous to travel." Matt agreed with his wife. "Add in the aneurysm, and that just added on an extra layer of danger to the entire situation." Matt agreed once more, as he knew that was true. "And then, add on the fact that I didn't even know how you were going to receive me. Whether you would take me back, or even want to be with me after going against your wishes…" Matt then stopped his wife as she started to go down that path, as that wasn't something he wanted to hear: that she thought he wouldn't take her back. "Ok. Let's just stop there. That's something I need to comment on, especially since it relates to the situation that we find ourselves in now." Gabby agreed, deciding to give Matt the benefit of the doubt. After all, he deserves that as her husband and the love of her life.
So, she made sure to listen as he spoke to her right now. "I just want to be clear about what I'm doing right now." Even though she was unsure of where Matt was headed with this, Gabby decided to hear Matt out. "Right now, I'm not taking you back. I'm not giving you a second chance." Gabby agreed with Matt. "That's not what this is. This is me stepping up to the plate, like you deserve. Gabby, you're my wife. Gabriel is our son. Those are two facts that you never need to worry about." Matt said, as he placed his hand on the side of Gabby's face and leaned in to kiss her softly. "I love you. And you're my wife. I didn't take you back when you came here, we just continued our marriage. That's all this is…us, continuing our marriage. And now, I need to ask. When we spent that night together at the hotel, was that you thinking I was taking you back again? Is that how you interpreted it?" Gabby took a breath.
After all, she didn't interpret it that way. "No. Rather, I thought it was a hookup, a one-night stand." And the moment Matt heard Gabby say that, he felt horrible. "Oh my god. Seriously? That's how you thought about that? You treated it as a one-night stand?" Gabby sighed. "The truth is, I've been waiting for divorce papers from you since I left. I was waiting and just wondering when it would happen. I dreaded each and every time I got the mail, as I was worried that I would find divorce papers. Then, when I saw that there wasn't, I felt relieved as it meant that we were still together. That you were still committed to our marriage." Matt agreed with his wife, as that was always going to be the case. In fact, it never crossed his mind to even look at divorce papers. "Gabby, I promise. I never thought about divorce. It never crossed my mind, because I love you and want us to be together forever."
Gabby agreed with Matt, as she felt the same way. She wants to be with him for the rest of her life, which gives her hope that they can fix things in their marriage. "You have no idea how nice it is to hear you say that. It really gives me hope that we can fix our marriage." Matt agreed with his wife, as that was precisely what he wanted to hear: that there was hope for our marriage. "Gabby, of course, there's hope for our marriage. There's plenty of hope for our marriage, as we have a long future together. Yes, we've had some bumps in the road. Though, I can assure you that you being in Puerto Rico has made me want to be your husband even more." Gabby was surprised when she heard Matt say that. "Really?" Matt nodded, as that was the truth. "Yes, because I craved for you each and every day. I craved touching you, holding you in my arms and just making sweet love to you someday. God, that was a great night."
Gabby smiled, as she knew that Matt was talking about the night they spent with each other in the hotel; the night they created their son, their miracle, Gabriel Matthew Casey. Though, that brought her back to the hookup thing and just why she felt that way. "And this is where the hookup thing comes back, and why I felt that way." Matt agreed, as he wanted to hear that. "Yeah, why do you feel that way?" Giving her husband a bit of side-eye, Gabby was surprised that he didn't know why she felt that way. "Gee, maybe it was the fact that my husband let me wake up naked in bed! I mean, c'mon Matthew! I love you, but did you really need to let me wake up naked in bed, without you? Oh, and not even a goodbye kiss. I would've loved that." Matt sighed as he placed his hand on her hip. "I was worried that it would hurt more if I woke you up." Confused, Gabby looked into Matt's eyes. "What do you mean?"
Sighing, Matt placed his hand on Gabby's hip to explain what he meant. "Gabby, you had to know just how much it hurt to walk out that door. I wanted to stay, but I couldn't because I knew that you were leaving. I knew that you were going back to Puerto Rico, and I couldn't do it again. You leaving me in 2018 almost broke me. I don't know if I ever told you this, but you were my anchor. As much as it bugs the crap out of me, but you're my gravity. You're my everything, and I felt lost when you left. That's why I got so mad at you that summer, as you just left. I mean, Gabby…I know I said horrible things to you, I know that; okay?" Gabby agreed with her husband, as she knew that. She knew that he said horrible things to him. "But, I was just scared. And I hate to say this but…in light of what happened yesterday, I think we can both agree that my fears were justified. I almost you yesterday, and it was my fault."
Gabby sighed, as she knew that Matt felt that way; and as much as it hurt to hear him say it, she knew that she couldn't change how he thought of the entire situation. "Gabby, you can't do that to me. You can't just leave without telling me. It hurt me more than you'll ever know, because I lost you. Hell, I thought that I lost you forever then, and I thought that I lost you forever yesterday. I'm just grateful that you're still here, with me and Gabriel." Gabby agreed with her husband and smiled as she placed her hand on his face, only to lean in and kiss the man of her dreams softly. "I feel the same way. I'm so glad to be here with you, as I love you more than anything." Matt agreed with his wife, well aware that was the case. "And I know that. Just, please remember that you need to tell me where you go next time. I mean, you had an aneurysm at the time, and I had no idea where you were." Gabby then got nervous.
After all, that was the truth. That summer, Matt had no idea where she was…and she had an aneurysm at the time. "God, I didn't think of that. Having to wonder whether I was okay the entire time I was gone." Matt nodded, as it was hard; something Andy decided to confirm as he walked up to their hospital room with Heather. "I can confirm that Matt was a wreck during those weeks, Gabby. He was worried out of his mind that you were gone." Turning his head when he heard Andy's voice, Matt smiled as he went to go greet him and Heather this morning. After all, he was so happy that they finally came up. Sure, he saw Andy downstairs already this morning; but, he was starting to wonder what was taking him so long. "I was wondering what was taking you so long to come up here." Heather laughed, as that was her fault. "That's my fault. I was having some trouble with the boys complaining that they couldn't come."
Smiling, Gabby agreed with Heather. "You could've brought them." Heather shook her head, prior to turning her head to look at her husband. "When this idiot here decided to give them sugar cereal? Not a chance, not when you just gave birth." Matt just shook his head when he heard Heather say that. "Predictable." Andy agreed. "We brought you guys some breakfast from that shop we all like." Matt agreed, as he loves that idea. "Sure thing. Let's all sit down, and we can eat, then you can each hold Gabriel for a bit." The two guests both agreed with Matt when he said that, more than ready to hold Gabriel. But first, Matt decided to make sure that Andy spoke to Heather as he walked up to him and whispered. "You spoke to her, right? About what we spoke about downstairs?" Matt said, in a stern tone to make sure that Andy did as he was told. Meanwhile, Andy turned his head and nodded. "I promise."
Matt agreed, glad that was the case. "Good, you can stay." Looking up at her husband, Gabby was confused. "What are you talking about, baby? Everything okay?"
