Chapter 12: Memories of Absolution

As Shadow connected with Sonic in the Realm of Light to warn him of Ansem and his plans, Aqua and Mickey took time to catch up after many years apart. They stood by the lake in the darkened woodlands, a place that might have been beautiful before it was destroyed by darkness. Aqua went into detail about her quest with Shadow and how they met. She explained further how she became a husk, with Oscura being released from her, thanks to Mephiles. Mickey recounted the events in the Realm of Light, revealing to Aqua that she had not been seen in over a decade. Aqua seemed surprised, but deep down, she had suspected as much.

"So, it is true. It has been over a decade since I last walked in the Realm of Light," Aqua mused, her voice tinged with sorrow.

"I'm afraid so," Mickey replied solemnly, his expression mirroring her somber tone.

"After our last encounter, I ensured Ven's safety and then pursued Terra," Aqua recalled, her voice filled with determination.

As she retrieved her Wayfinder from her pocket, Aqua's fingers traced the contours of the blue charm, memories flooding back to her.

"Do you recall where you left Ven?" Mickey inquired gently, his eyes filled with empathy as he observed Aqua's introspection.

"I... I cannot remember," Aqua admitted with a sigh, returning the charm to her pocket and turning her attention to Mickey. "But I remember Terra's descent into darkness, leaving me with a difficult decision," she continued, her voice laced with regret.

"Choosing to save him, even if it meant remaining here," Mickey finished for her, understanding the weight of her sacrifice.

Aqua nodded slowly, her features softening with a mixture of sadness and resolve.

"I had to try, Mickey. For Terra's sake," she admitted.

"I know you did. You did the right thing," Mickey assured her, offering a supportive smile.

"Did Terra..." Aqua hesitated, her voice tinged with concern, "Did Terra make it to the Realm of Light?"

Mickey's expression faltered, and he sighed, shaking his head.

"We still haven't found him," he admitted, his tone heavy with regret.

"Well, wherever he is, he's fighting. He'll beat his darkness. And I know he wants me to fight too," Aqua said with determination, her eyes shining with unwavering resolve.

"You bet," Mickey responded, his tone more upbeat. "I'm sure he'll be just fine."

"Absolutely," Aqua replied, her confidence bolstered by Mickey's reassurance. "I just wish I knew where I placed Ven."

"Let's get this Ansem and Mephiles business taken care of, find the key, and head home together!" Mickey declared, his voice filled with determination and optimism. "Hopefully, you and Oscura can become one again."

"I hope so, Mickey," Aqua replied, her tone becoming downbeat. "But there is more to my past I need to learn and find out."

"We can find out these truths together too, once we get out of here," Mickey said, his upbeat manner shining through the Realm of Darkness.

Aqua smiled at her friend, grateful for his presence and support. With Shadow by their side, she felt a renewed sense of determination.

Suddenly, Shadow's voice interrupted their moment of camaraderie.

"Damn it!" he exclaimed, his tone filled with frustration and exhaustion.

Aqua and Mickey turned to see the dark hedgehog, the light around him fading away. The connection between the Realm of Light and Darkness had disconnected, leaving Shadow visibly drained and struggling to stay on his feet.

"Shadow, are you alright?" Mickey asked, his voice filled with concern as he rushed to Shadow's side.

"That connection to Sonic... it used a lot of my energy," Shadow admitted, his breaths coming in ragged gasps, his body trembling with the effort to stay upright.

Aqua quickly made her way to Shadow, her face etched with concern.

"You used a lot of your light, plus that chaos energy you can harness. You need to rest," she urged gently, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

"Aqua's right," Mickey added, summoning his Spellbinder Keyblade. "Here, let me cure you."

However, Shadow shook his head, straightening up despite the visible strain on his body.

"I'll be fine, save your magic," he insisted, his determination shining through his fatigue. "The most important thing is that I've made Sonic aware, and I've got news."

"News?" Mickey asked, his curiosity piqued, but his worry for Shadow still evident.

"Maleficent has been struck down. She's no longer an issue," Shadow stated, his voice firm despite his weariness.

"Really?" Aqua responded, her surprise and relief mingling together. "That's one less enemy to worry about."

Shadow nodded in agreement, "That is indeed one problem dealt with. Ansem is the next. I informed Sonic and the others about it."

"Others?" Mickey echoed, his brow furrowing. "Do you mean Sora, Donald, Goofy?"

"No," Shadow shook his head, his expression grim. "Knuckles, a group of women tangled up in this mess, and Silver."

"Silver?!" Mickey exclaimed, his surprise palpable. "He's with Sonic?"

Shadow nodded, folding his arms and casting his gaze across the darkened woodland and lake.

"Yes, and they're all working together to stop Ansem. We have allies in this fight," the hedgehog affirmed.

Aqua remained silent for a moment, her memories of Silver beginning to resurface. The time-travelling hedgehog had crossed paths with her and her friends all those years ago, and those memories were not all positive.

"You remember Silver, right, Aqua?" Mickey asked, his concern evident as he looked at the Keyblade Master.

Aqua paused, her eyes distant as she recalled the past. Slowly, she nodded.

"Yes," she replied, her voice tinged with a mix of emotions. "But from what I can remember, he caused Terra, Ven, and me a significant amount of trouble."

"Trouble?" Shadow asked, his arms still crossed. "What kind of trouble are we talking about?"

Mickey, remembering his own encounters with Silver, seemed puzzled by Aqua's comments.

"I don't remember Silver being an issue way back when," he remarked. "He was there at the Keyblade Graveyard to stop Master Xehanort's plans."

"He was," Aqua admitted, her tone becoming serious. "But before that, he targeted Terra, Ven, and me."

"What?" Mickey remarked, flabbergasted. "You guys didn't tell me that part!"

"Well, there was a lot going on," Aqua replied. "Plus, Silver had changed his tune by then."

"But the question is, why was he targeting you?" Shadow inquired, his features furrowing with curiosity and concern.

Aqua's fractured memories became clearer, remembering back when Silver targeted them all after they had just defeated a large Unversed. She took a deep breathe and turned her gaze to the crossed armed hedgehog and curiously surprised mouse king.

"We were dealing with a large Unversed that was terrorising Radiant Garden," Aqua began, her memories fixing back together to help piece together her fractured relationship with Silver the Hedgehog.

AQUA'S MEMORY

It was a tough battle against the Trinity Armor, but Terra, Aqua and Ventus had the floating metal menace on the ropes. All three jumped into the air, with Aqua attacking first, her Keyblade slicing through the thick, metal and shadowy hide of the giant Unversed. Terra followed with a powerful strike, and Ven joined in, their combined efforts overwhelming the creature. With a final burst of energy, the Unversed faded away, dissolving into dark mist.

"Got 'im," Terra said, a satisfied smirk on his face.

"We make a good team," Aqua added, her smile mirroring Terra's.

"Sure do. Oh yeah! I got you these tickets," Ven chimed in, pulling out three tickets that read "Disney Town Passport" on their fronts.

"For what?" Terra asked, taking one of the tickets.

"Lifetime passes to Disney Town," Ven explained, handing one to each of them. "He said to take two grown-ups."

"You mean us?" Aqua asked, laughing along with Terra.

As the laughter died down, Aqua's expression grew serious.

"Listen to me, Ven... We need to get you home—"

Suddenly, a blinding green light enveloped the three Keyblade wielders. They felt an immense pressure crushing against them, as if an invisible vice was tightening around their bodies. The air around them seemed to thrum with raw energy, each particle vibrating with the force of the psychokinetic power being exerted upon them.

"Not this again!" Terra exclaimed, his muscles straining visibly as he fought against the force holding him in place. His arms and legs trembled with effort, veins standing out starkly beneath his skin.

"Such... power!" Aqua added, her voice strained. Her body trembled as she could feel the psychic energy like an oppressive weight, pressing down on her chest and making it hard to breathe.

Ventus was also struggling, his face contorted in pain. His normally light-hearted demeanor was replaced with a look of sheer determination as he tried to push back against the invisible bonds, but the psychic grip held him immobile.

Just then, a voice echoed through the courtyard, cold and determined.

"Finally, I've got you all!"

The three managed to look up, their eyes widening in shock. Above the Radiant Garden Courtyard floated a silver hedgehog, his body surrounded by a pulsating green aura of psychic energy. The green light cast eerie shadows on their faces, highlighting their struggle.

"Not you again..." Ventus remarked in pain, still being squeezed by the green light.

The hedgehog touched down onto the ground, his golden gaze fixed on the trapped Keyblade wielders. The ground beneath his white, navy blue and aqua boots seemed to crackle with energy, small pebbles levitating momentarily before falling back down.

"This time, there will be no more interruptions!" The silver hedgehog declared, pointing his finger at them. His expression was fierce and unyielding, every line of his body radiating determination and anger.

"Why... why are you targeting us?!" Terra asked, straining under the immense pressure.

"You are the three that will doom the future, affecting my timeline!" the silver hedgehog remarked, his voice tinged with frustration but also sorrow. "You are the Triggers of Darkness!"

Aqua, struggling to speak through the crushing force of the green light, managed to utter, "We... aren't... your enemies..."

This attempt at dialogue only seemed to infuriate the hedgehog further. His golden eyes narrowed, and with a sharp, frustrated motion, he threw up both of his hands. The psychic energy surged, lifting Aqua, Terra, and Ventus off the ground before hurling them violently against a nearby wall. The impact reverberated through the courtyard, a dull thud echoing in the oppressive silence.

The three Keyblade wielders slumped to the ground but quickly regained their footing, determination flaring in their eyes. They summoned their Keyblades, the weapons materialising with a flash of light, ready to defend themselves.

"Just who are you?" Aqua demanded, her voice steady despite the lingering pain.

"Yeah," Ventus chimed in, anger and confusion mixing in his tone. "You've been targeting us, causing trouble. What's your deal?"

The silver hedgehog's golden gaze bore into them, filled with a mix of regret and steely resolve.

"My name is Silver, and I must destroy you three to protect the future!"

The air crackled with tension, the weight of Silver's declaration hanging heavily between them. Aqua, Terra, and Ventus tightened their grips on their Keyblades, ready for whatever came next. They saw Silver's psychic aura flaring brighter, casting eerie shadows across his face.

"You don't understand the devastation that awaits if you continue on your current path," the hedgehog remarked. "Entire worlds will fall to darkness, and I won't let that happen."

"We're not your enemies, Silver!" Terra shouted, holding his Keyblade tightly and standing his ground.

"Enough of your lies!" Silver snapped back, his powers beginning to lift him off the ground. "I've come to save the future; and you three must die!"

The silver hedgehog's green aura intensified, objects dotted around the square now hovering in the air, caught in his psychic grip. Debris, stones, and fragments of the once-peaceful courtyard floated ominously, ready to be turned into deadly projectiles.

"This is your last warning," Aqua called out loudly, getting into a defensive stance with her Keyblade. "Stand down and we can peacefully discuss these issues you have."

Silver's face twisted with determination and fury. He was in no mood to talk. With a furious gesture, he launched the floating objects towards the trio. The projectiles whistled through the air, their deadly intent clear.

"Look out!" Ven shouted, diving to the side just in time.

Terra rolled to the left, while Aqua executed a nimble backflip, her Keyblade deflecting a few of the smaller projectiles. The courtyard erupted into chaos as the objects crashed around them, sending up clouds of dust and debris.

Terra's patience snapped, "I've had enough of this!" he roared, raising his Keyblade high. "Let's bring him down a peg!"

Aqua's vision began to blur, the intensity of the moment and the strain of her memories overwhelming her. As the scene in Radiant Garden dissolved, replaced by the white void of her mind, the last image she saw was Silver, his golden eyes burning with desperation, locked in a deadly dance with her friends.

"Gosh, I had no idea he was after you three," Mickey remarked in shock, his face etched with concern after listening to Aqua's story.

"Silver took all three of us to our limits. We just managed to get past him," Aqua explained, her voice steady yet carrying the weight of the memories.

"But, it sounds like he was tricked," Mickey replied, frowning. "The Silver I knew seemed willing to stop Master Xehanort."

"He did come around eventually, and we managed to work with him. But it took a lot of hard work and trust, from both sides," Aqua affirmed, a hint of a smile playing at the corner of her lips.

"Typical Silver..." Shadow remarked bluntly, his head tilted and eyes closed, his arms still crossed.

"What do you mean, Shadow?" Mickey asked, turning his attention to the brooding hedgehog.

Shadow opened his eyes, his gaze distant as he recalled his own experiences with Silver.

"Silver is driven by his sense of justice and duty to protect his future. He's always been willing to go to extreme lengths, sometimes without fully understanding the consequences. His heart's in the right place, but his methods can be... intense."

Mickey nodded thoughtfully, "That makes sense. He must have been desperate, thinking Terra, Aqua and Ven were the cause of his future's destruction."

Aqua sighed softly, "Desperation can make us do things we wouldn't normally do. But in the end, he saw the truth and fought alongside us."

Shadow's eyes met Aqua's, a hint of understanding passing between them.

"He's not much different from us, really. We all have our battles, our reasons for fighting. Silver just needs to see the bigger picture sometimes."

"Well, if he's with Sonic now, we'll need to keep that in mind," Mickey said, his voice resolute. "We should be prepared for anything but also ready to extend a hand if he needs it."

"Agreed," Aqua replied with a nod. "We need all the allies we can get in this fight against the darkness. Silver's strength and determination could be invaluable."

Shadow unfolded his arms and began walking, his expression focused and determined. He knew they didn't have much time left to stop Mephiles and Ansem.

"Shadow?" Mickey asked, watching the hedgehog leave.

"I've done my part to warn Sonic. Now we have to move forward and find this Key you seek," Shadow replied, his voice steady as he walked away from Mickey and Aqua.

"Shadow is right," Aqua admitted, turning her gaze down to Mickey. "We have to get moving."

Mickey nodded, his eyes reflecting the same determination.

"Then let's go," Mickey remarked. "We have a lot of ground to cover."

Aqua and Mickey followed Shadow, and the trio moved forward, leaving the Aetheris woodland behind. Aqua knew she would have to come back to face her past at some point, but her world's destruction and the demise of her parents and people were things she would have to investigate later. Right now, the Realm of Light was in danger.

As they pressed on, the landscape around them shifted from the eerie, twisted trees of the woodland to a more barren, desolate terrain. The air grew colder, and the silence was only broken by the distant echoes of their footsteps.

Aqua's thoughts lingered on her past, the images of her lost world and loved ones flashing through her broken mind. The sorrow was a constant companion, but she channeled it into determination. She had a mission to complete, and the memories she had reconnected strengthened her steps. Together, the three heroes navigated the treacherous terrain, their eyes sharp for any sign of their enemies or the Key they sought.

As they journeyed deeper into the Realm of Darkness, the oppressive atmosphere seemed to press in around them, but their resolve pushed back the encroaching shadows. The landscape was a labyrinth of jagged rocks and twisted pathways, each turn bringing new challenges and dangers as they seeked out this realm's Keyblade to close the Door to Darkness, and stop Ansem's plan.

UNKNOWN LOCATION

A dark portal opened and out stepped Robotnik, led by the dark figure who had visited him at his base. They emerged into a room that was sleek and white in design, its sterile aesthetic contrasting sharply with the dark energy of the portal. The room was filled with machinery and computers, giant pods standing like silent sentinels nearby. It was a laboratory of some kind, humming with an eerie blend of technology and dark magic.

"So, where have you brought me?" Robotnik asked, his voice echoing slightly in the spacious, clinical environment. He glanced around, his keen mind already analysing the advanced technology surrounding them.

The hooded figure did not immediately reply, instead moving toward a nearby computer terminal. With swift, practiced motions, the figure began to activate the machinery, screens flickering to life with streams of data and cryptic symbols.

"This, Doctor," the figure finally said, their voice low and enigmatic. "This is where the next phase of our plan begins. Welcome to our domain."

Robotnik raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the cryptic introduction.

"Our domain, huh? And what exactly is it that you plan to accomplish here?"

The figure turned slightly, the shadows of the hood revealing a hint of a sinister smile.

"We are on the brink of a great transformation, Doctor. Here, we harness the power of darkness and technology to create something unparalleled. Your genius will be instrumental in this endeavor."

Before Robotnik could respond, another hooded figure entered the room. This one moved with an air of disdain, his posture stiff and his expression barely concealed beneath the hood was one of irritation.

"Ah, I see our guest has arrived," the second figure said, his voice laced with reluctance. "Do you truly believe this... this Mobian can aid us in our grand scheme?"

"Watch your mouth," Robotnik hissed, pointing his gloved finger towards the arrogant hooded figure. "I am the great Doctor Ivo Robotnik; it's a privilege to work with my intellect."

The second hooded figure scoffed, clearly unimpressed by Robotnik's self-importance.

"Do you really think we can trust this egotistical madman?" he asked, turning his gaze towards his comrade.

The first figure, unperturbed by the newcomer's skepticism, nodded.

"Indeed. Doctor Robotnik's expertise in robotics is exactly what we need to perfect our replica program."

"Replica program?" Robotnik echoed, his curiosity piqued. "What exactly are you replicating?"

The first figure turned back to Robotnik, his eyes gleaming with a mix of ambition and darkness from under his hood.

"We aim to create perfect replicas of key individuals, using the powers of memory manipulation. By doing so, we can control their actions, and ultimately, bend them to our will for our goals."

Robotnik's eyes sparkled with excitement at the possibilities.

"Fascinating. And how do you plan to manipulate these memories?"

At that moment, a young girl with long blonde hair, dressed in white and blue sandals was brought into the room by another hooded figure. Her expression was a mix of fear and resignation, her deep blue eyes downcast as she was led to a nearby machine.

"This girl is the answer," the first figure explained, a hint of pride in his voice.

Robotnik looked unimpressed, glancing at the blonde-haired girl with skepticism.

"A mere child?" he scoffed, taken aback by this revelation. "What is this, a children's birthday party?!"

"She is no mere mortal child, Doctor," the second hooded figure retorted, his tone dripping with condescension. "We have found that she has unique abilities, allowing her to manipulate and reconstruct memories, a power that can turn the tide in our favor."

Robotnik's eyes narrowed as he studied the girl more closely.

"Manipulate memories, you say? Interesting. But how does it work? How can we harness this power?"

The first figure, who had been silently observing, stepped forward.

"The girls abilities are unique. She can alter the fabric of memories, shaping them to our design. With your technology, we can amplify and control this power, creating replicas with altered memories who will follow our commands without question."

The girl stood silently, her fear palpable as she listened to their plans. She looked up briefly, her gaze meeting Robotnik's. In that moment, Robotnik saw a flicker of defiance in her eyes, a hint of resistance.

"I say we run some tests to prove your theory," Robotnik suggested, turning his gaze to the hooded figures. "Once this girl can show me her power and potential, I can get to work on these replicas."

"See that the testing is done," the first hooded figure remarked, turning to his other ally.

"Fine," the second hooded figure said with a sigh. "But, you better be right about teaming with Robotnik."

The first hooded figure nodded and held out his gloved hand, summoning another dark corridor close to him.

"And where are you going?" Robotnik asked, looking towards the swirling dark corridor. "We have work to do!"

"I seek more clarity on something, call it research," the hooded figure replied cryptically, his gaze unreadable behind his hood. "I won't be too long."

With a nod to his companion, the figure stepped into the swirling darkness of the corridor, disappearing from view. Robotnik watched him go, a sense of unease settling over him. Turning his attention back to the task at hand, the doctor gestured for the girl to follow him.

"Come, my dear," he said, his tone surprisingly gentle. "Let's see what you're capable of."

The girl hesitated but knew she had no choice but to comply with Robotnik's demands, but she couldn't shake the feeling of dread that lingered in the pit of her stomach.

However, before Robotnik could usher the girl away for testing, the other hooded figure interjected, drawing his attention with a sense of urgency.

"Before we proceed, there is something of great significance we've uncovered in our pursuit of knowledge."

Intrigued, Robotnik shifted his focus, a glimmer of curiosity in his eyes.

"Pursuit of knowledge, you say? Color me intrigued. What have you unearthed?"

With measured steps, the hooded figure approached a nearby pod, a harbinger of secrets waiting to be revealed.

"You'll find our discovery... enlightening," he intoned cryptically, his voice a mere whisper against the backdrop of palpable tension.

With a deft movement, he pressed a concealed button, setting into motion the unveiling of mysteries long shrouded in shadow. As the pod's hatch swung open, casting an ethereal blue glow, Robotnik's heart quickened with anticipation, a primal instinct urging caution in the face of the unknown.

"During our quest for enlightenment, we stumbled upon this broken and corrupted creation."

"What lies within?" Robotnik's voice betrayed a mixture of apprehension and curiosity.

With a gesture, the hooded figure beckoned him closer, a silent invitation to unravel the mysteries concealed within the chamber's depths.

"Behold," he murmured, his tone veiled in mystery.

With bated breath, Robotnik peered into the pod, his mind reeling at the sight before him. A gasp escaped his lips as realisation dawned upon him.

"It... It cannot be..." he remarked, disbelief coloring his tone.

The hooded figure's chuckle echoed, a haunting melody of secrets unveiled.

"You recognise this machine, don't you, Doctor Robotnik?"

Robotnik's gaze hardened, his eyes locking with the enigmatic figure before him.

"I believed him to be lost to in dark..."

"Lost, you say?" the hooded figure mused, his words a tantalising riddle. "Tell me, Doctor, what do you make of this unexpected reunion?"

Robotnik's expression darkened, a storm of conflicting emotions raging within him as the truth of their discovery unfolded before his very eyes.

"It's... It's Metal Sonic!"
