It's been a few days since Princess Celestia had adopted Gold Shield, and the two were relaxing a bit as they had everything done. Princess Celestia then looked at Gold with a smile.
"Would you like to go spend some time with Twilight?" She asked.
"Today isn't a good day. She has a family thing. I wouldn't want to intrude on it." Gold said. Princess Cadence then walked in and went to Gold.
"Gold," she said, "I just got a request for you. Twilight's brother, Shining Armor, just asked for you to be included in their family thing. Not sure why, but he did mention that Twilight seemed dejected. Maybe you should go cheer her up." Gold was stunned, but looked at Princess Celestia.
"It's okay. Go." Princess Celestia said, nodding. Gold then started to run, but Princess Cadence stopped him.
"Allow me." She said. Princess Cadence then used her magic and teleported the two of them to Twilight's house. Gold then went to the door and knocked. After a few moments, the door opened and Shining Armor appeared in the doorway.
"She's in her room. She hasn't come out all day." Shining said. Gold then went to her room and knocked on the door.
"Go away, Shining!" Twilight said.
"Who said it was your brother?" Gold asked. He heard Twilight gasp and make her way to the door before slowly opening it and peek her head out.
"Gold?" She asked.
"Who else would it be? Nightmare Moon?" Gold asked, making a light joke. Twilight smiled and giggled a bit before opening the door fully and going to him, hugging him. Gold returned the embrace and smiled.
"I thought I wouldn't get to see you today." Twilight said.
"Your brother asked me to come." Gold said. The two stopped hugging and Twilight looked at Shining Armor.
"Really?" She asked.
"Yup!" Shining responded.
"He said you seemed dejected. So," Gold said, "he wanted me included in your family thing. I just hope he cleared it with your parents first." Twilight then teared up a bit before hugging Gold again.
"It doesn't matter. You're like family to us." She said.
"More like family to YOU, Twilight. You spend so much time with him that mom and dad joke that he's your boyfriend." Shining said.
"Like you have any room to talk." Gold countered. Shining tensed up and Princess Cadence giggled. That was when Nightlight and Twilight Velvet walked up and were shocked.
"You got her out of her room?!" Nightlight asked.
"All she wanted was for Gold to be here, too. After all," Shining said, "I included Cadence. It's only fair that Gold be involved, too. Right?" Nightlight went to say something, but stopped as he saw the logic behind it.
"You make a solid point." Nightlight said. Twilight Velvet then giggled.
"I told you so." She said. Nightlight then sighed in defeat.
"Alright. He can join in." Nightlight said. Twilight nuzzled Gold's cheek, causing him to faintly blush.
"So," Gold said, "what did you have planned today?"
"That's a surprise." Twilight Velvet said. However, Gold then saw something on the calendar and went on alert.
"You're not just saying it's a family thing to trick Twilight into going to the doctor, are you?" Gold asked.
"Huh?!" Shining asked.
"Why would you ask that?" Nightlight asked. Gold motioned to the calendar and Nightlight looked, going pale. Twilight Velvet looked and gasped.
"You had our daughter scheduled for a hysterectomy?!" She asked.
"What's that?" Twilight asked.
"A medical procedure to prevent a mare from getting pregnant." Gold said, having a slight glare in his eye.
"What?!" Twilight asked.
"Dad!" Shining said, his voice scolding.
"How could you?! She's not even old enough yet!" Princess Cadence said.
"Don't you want her to give us grandchildren, too?!" Twilight Velvet asked.
"It's not FOR her! It's for YOU!" Nightlight said.
"Then why does it have TS on the appointment date and not TV?" Gold asked. Nightlight then tensed further and Shining looked at it.
"This is why you didn't want Twilight and I to have anyone over. You were TRICKING us!" He said.
"I didn't want your sister making a mistake!" Nightlight said. That was when Gold got angry.
"Are you saying you don't trust your daughter?" Gold asked. This caused Shining and Nightlight to tense up, as they had never heard Gold speak that way before. Twilight then hugged Gold tight, hoping it would help him calm down.
"Easy, Gold. Don't do anything you'll regret." Princess Cadence said.
"I'm not going to. I know better than to make Twilight cry." Gold said. Twilight then nuzzled Gold's cheek and looked at Nightlight.
"You need to put more trust in me. I know to be careful." Twilight said.
"We haven't done anything REMOTELY close to what you're thinking. We may be young," Gold spoke, "but we're not stupid. We know the risks and dangers."
"How could you possibly know?!" Nightlight asked.
"We had read books about it!" Gold said, stunning Nightlight.
"What?" He asked.
"Twilight and I had read books on it. She's too young for anything to really happen," Gold said, "and that means she's too young for a hysterectomy. You just shot yourself in the hoof even suggesting that."
"Gold's been helping me in my studies, too. We even have the basics of magic down." Twilight said.
"We were planning on starting to learn more advanced forms of magic, known as intermediate level, in two days. However," Gold said, "I do know one intermediate spell already. An intermediate combat spell. I just haven't trained with it yet." Nightlight gasped and Shining looked at Gold.
"Take it easy! You don't want to hurt him!" He said.
"Who said I would hurt him?" Gold asked, his magic flaring. Shining got ready to put a shield up, but Gold fired a blast of magic at the calendar and destroyed it. The calendar fell down, revealing no mark on the wall behind it. Nightlight's jaw dropped.
'Not even a trace of damage left behind!' Nightlight thought. Shining sighed in relief.
"Make no mistake. If I wanted to hurt him," Gold said, "I would have. He knows he deserves it."
"Why didn't you?" Twilight Velvet asked.
"What good would hurting the father of my best friend do?" Gold asked. Twilight then blushed and looked away.
"W-what if I said I felt we were more?" She asked.
"You mean like siblings?" Nightlight asked.
"I mean… like a special somepony." Twilight said. Gold then looked at Twilight in shock.
'What?' He thought. Twilight Velvet then smiled and gave a light giggle.
"Are you sure you want him included then?" She asked.
"I'm sure." Twilight said.
"Back to that question. Included in what?" Gold asked. Twilight held Gold close and nuzzled his cheek.
"Family picture day!" Twilight said. Gold was stunned, but smiled and returned Twilight's embrace.
Location: Canterlot Photography Center
Time: 1321 Hours (1:21 PM)
Gold was with Twilight as they were watching other families get their photos taken. A pony then approached them and smiled.
"New family additions?" They asked. Nightlight gave a smile and nodded.
"Yes. We'd like three separate photos done." Nightlight said.
"I know a full family portrait is one," the pony said, "but what are the other two?"
"One of my son and his girlfriend," Nightlight said, "and one of my daughter and her friend." The pony nodded and took the information down.
"Which photo first?" They asked.
"Let's go with my son and his girlfriend first." Nightlight said.
"Next?" The pony asked.
"My daughter and her friend." Nightlight said.
"Leaving the full family portrait last. Alright. We'll get you when we're ready." The pony said. Nightlight then nodded and the pony walked away. Nightlight walked to the others and gave a nod.
"We're all set. They'll get us when they're ready." He said. Twilight smiled bright and hugged Gold.
"I'm glad you're here, Gold." She said. Gold smiled and returned the embrace.
"Glad to be here." Gold said. Nightlight then approached them and they broke the hug.
"Since I know you'll want it," Nightlight said, "I'll make sure you two have a copy of your picture on a frame. One for each of you."
"I would like that. Thank you." Gold said. Twilight nodded in agreement.
"You two will be after Shining and Cadence." Nightlight said. He then walked off and Twilight had an idea.
"What if we got a picture together after we got our cutie marks?" She asked. Gold smiled and gave a nod.
"That sounds perfect." He said. Twilight smiled and nuzzled Gold's cheek, causing him to return the gesture. Shining and Cadence were then motioned to a background for their picture. Twilight watched and suddenly got nervous. Gold then put a hoof on hers to help calm her, which worked, and she just focused on Gold.
"Twilight? Gold? You're up." Nightlight said. Twilight nodded and walked to the background with Gold following. The two then stopped where they were told and Twilight eased her nerves. The photographer then got an idea and looked at Nightlight.
"Would it be okay if I took their picture with them being the same as I had your son and his girlfriend?" They asked.
"Fine by me." Nightlight said.
"How did they get their picture taken?" Gold asked, light suspicion in his voice.
"Don't worry. It's nothing risqué. Just hold each other close," the photographer said, "but face each other and have your horns touch. Then, when I say to, close your eyes. Afterwards, I'll tell you when the picture is taken." Twilight seemed nervous, but I looked at her calmingly.
"Are you sure that's okay, Nightlight?" Gold asked.
"It's fine. I trust you two." Nightlight said. Twilight started shaking a bit, but Gold put a calming hoof on her. She looked at him, into his eyes, and saw him smile calmly. Twilight stopped shaking and put her hooves around Gold's neck, moving them to around his shoulders. Gold put his hooves around her shoulders and the two held each other close. Their horns soon touched and the photographer smiled, in position for the picture.
"Alright. Close your eyes." They said. Gold and Twilight then closed their eyes, their minds focused solely on each other to prevent any magic from flaring.
"They look so adorable like that!" Twilight Velvet whispered. The photographer then took the picture and gave a smile.
"Alright. I took the picture. You can stop now." The photographer said. Twilight and Gold then stopped and Twilight gave a calming sigh.
[A few moments later….]
Nightlight gave Gold two pictures. One of everyone, and the one of just him and Twilight. Both of which were framed.
"I'm actually glad Twilight wanted to include you. I'm sorry if I caused you to not trust me." Nightlight said.
"So long as you learn from your mistakes," Gold said, "you are bound to never repeat them."
"I'll keep that in mind." Nightlight said. Twilight then approached Nightlight and looked nervous.
"D-dad? W-would it be okay if Gold s-s-spent the night tonight?" She asked. Nightlight was shocked, but Gold saw fear in her eyes.
"Twilight, were you just threatened?" Gold asked.
"N-no." Twilight said.
"What's going on?" Nightlight asked.
"I see fear in her eyes. She's scared of something." Gold said.
"Is he right? Are you scared of something?" Nightlight asked. Twilight nodded and Gold looked around.
"I think I should stay the night. Something or someone here spooked her." Gold said.
"What or who would do that?" Nightlight asked.
"I don't know." Gold said. Shining then came up and saw the same thing Gold saw.
"Twily?" He asked. Gold then focused on everything and time seemed to slow. He soon saw a stallion looking from afar, and held a small doll in his hooves. The stallion wore a band that was red with a black symbol on a white background on his left foreleg. Gold took note of it, stepping in front of Twilight to protect her. Time seemed to resume as a background was rolled past where the stallion stood. After the background passed, the stallion was gone.
"What could have scared her?" Nightlight asked.
"I don't know." Shining said.
"We should talk to Princess Celestia. Get permission from her for me to stay the night." Gold said.
"What good will that do?" Shining asked.
"It will help put her mind at ease," Gold said, " and help her get some sleep tonight." Shining caught on and gave a nod.
"I'm going into the Royal Guard. This will be good practice. I'll stand outside your door all night, Twily." Shining said. Twilight hugged Shining and he returned it.
"We need to stop by the castle." Nightlight said.
Location: Canterlot Castle, Throne Room
Time: 1539 Hours (3:39 PM)
Princess Celestia was shocked at what she was told by Nightlight.
"She's THAT scared?" She asked.
"Yes, Your Highness. She asked for Gold to stay the night," Nightlight said, "and Shining Armor has agreed to stand by her door. Whatever she saw, it got to her in a bad way."
"Has she been informed already?" Princess Celestia asked. This caught Gold's attention.
"Informed of what?" Gold asked.
"Her acceptance into my School for Gifted and Talented Unicorns. She has her entrance exam soon." Princess Celestia said. Gold was stunned and looked to Nightlight.
"Did you know of this?" Gold asked.
"I did," Nightlight said, "and so does Twilight. We're hoping for the best."
"I have an open spot tomorrow. I'd like for her test to be then. It's at 11 in the morning. I'd like for her to be there about 30 minutes early." Princess Celestia said.
"We'll make sure she's here." Nightlight said.
"Also," Princess Celestia said, "I give Gold permission to spend the night. For now, Twilight can stay here until she's ready to go. Is this acceptable?"
"Yes, Your Highness." Nightlight said, bowing. He then left and Gold gave a look.
"I think it's time Twilight knew the truth." Gold said.
"I agree. Authorization is granted." Princess Celestia said. Gold then ran to where Twilight was and motioned for her to follow. She did and the two went to the library. He then used his magic and pulled down Predictions and Prophesies, causing Twilight to gasp.
"W-we shouldn't be reading that!" She said.
"Authorization was granted. Twilight," Gold said, "it's time you learned the truth of what happened to my birth parents. First, you need to learn about the Elements of Harmony and the Mare in the Moon."
"Princess Celestia's sister." Twilight said. Gold then flipped to the page on the Mare in the Moon and started reading.
"The Mare in the Moon," Gold read, "a myth from olden pony times. Imprisoned by Princess Celestia using the Elements of Harmony. Legend has it that on the thousandth day of the longest day of the year, the stars will aid in her escape, and she will bring about nighttime eternal."
"T-that's awful!" Twilight said.
"Twilight," Gold said, closing the book, "my parents were killed trying to STEAL the Elements of Harmony. Why would they do that if it wasn't for a reason?" That was when Twilight caught on.
"You think they wanted Nightmare Moon to return." She said.
"Either that," Gold said, "or they were looking to sell them. That's not the point though." Twilight then caught on and gasped.
"Y-your birth parents tried to kill you and Princess Celestia for the Elements of Harmony?!" She asked.
"Yes, Twilight. They did. Their plan backfired." Gold said, looking solemn. Twilight then hugged Gold and nuzzled him.
"That doesn't change how I see you, Gold." She said.
"We should practice more of our magic." Gold said. Twilight nodded and the two left.
Date: June 25
Location: Princess Celestia's School for Gifted and Talented Unicorns, Exam Waiting Area
Time: 1030 Hours (10:30 AM)
Gold was with Twilight, helping her practice, when they were approached by Shining Armor.
"Nothing suspicious so far. Hard to believe I'm in the going into the Royal Guard." He said.
"Best believe it soon." Gold said. Twilight then got Gold's attention and he saw worry in her eyes.
"W-what if my magic doesn't work? I don't want to waste their time." Twilight said.
"Just remember what I said. Don't focus on who is watching." Gold said.
"Focus on the task." Twilight said.
"The key to using all types of magic," Gold said, "and all types of weapons, is focus. Your parents and I will be in there supporting you. Just stay calm, and stay focused. Okay?" Twilight then took a breath and eased her nerves.
"Alright. I can do this." She said.
"That's the spirit." Gold said, smiling. He then moved some hair from her mane from out of her face and she blushed lightly.
"C-can we do one last review of everything before it's too late?" She asked.
"Alright." Gold said. The two then spent the remainder of the time getting Twilight ready for the entrance exam.
Location: Princess Celestia's School for Gifted and Talented Unicorns, Exam Room 1
Time: 1100 Hours (11:00 AM)
Twilight walked in and the judges were looking on. Gold walked with her, before the two stopped. One of the judges grew confused.
"Was there another who was scheduled with her?" They asked.
"I'm here for support. I was simply walking her over before going to where her parents are. I trust this is allowed." Gold said. The judge then nodded in understanding and Twilight took a breath.
"Thanks for being here." She whispered.
"You've got this, Twi." Gold whispered. Twilight nodded and gave an unnoticeable peck to Gold's cheek. Gold then went to where her parents stood, and Twilight grew more determined. A faculty member then revealed the test to be hatching a dragon egg.
"Whenever you're ready." A judge said. Twilight closed her eyes, taking in a deep breath before slowly releasing it. She then concentrated on her task and felt her magic flare up. She then remembered the right spell and opened her eyes with a glare before getting into position.
'You got this, Twilight. Show them what you can do.' Gold thought. Twilight then fired a beam of magic at the egg and it hatched into a baby dragon. The judges were stunned, quickly writing down their thoughts. Twilight then stopped channeling her magic and looked to Gold, smiling. Gold nodded and Twilight nodded in return. Before anyone could speak, however….
BOOM
….an explosion had occurred and caused magic to explode out of Twilight. Gold acted fast, putting shields around the judges, the newly hatched dragon, and her parents. He then saw the stallion from yesterday and glared before charging and knocking him down. The stallion tried to fight Gold off, but Gold managed to knock him unconscious. Princess Celestia then approached Twilight and put a hoof on her, causing her magic to stop. Gold then ran to Twilight and hugged her. The stallion then got up and charged at the two, but Gold glared and moved Twilight and Princess Celestia out of the way. The stallion then drew a dagger and tried to stab Gold. However, Gold had grinned and flashed a bit of magic. The stallion was confused, but soon realized why when he suddenly tensed up and collapsed, dropping the dagger. Gold then approached the stallion while grinning.
"W-what did you do to me?" The stallion asked. Gold then motioned for two Guards to restrain the stallion, one of them pulling a piece of paper off of the stallion's back.
"What is this? Some sort of tag?" The guard asked.
"A Paralyzing Spell Tag to be specific. I placed it on him after knocking him unconscious." Gold said.
"H-how did you manage to do it without me noticing?" The stallion asked.
"Wouldn't YOU like to know." Gold said. The stallion growled, but was restrained well by the guards. One of them noticed the band around the foreleg and took note of it. The other searched the stallion before finding what looked to be a badge.
"Why do you have a blank badge with you?" They asked.
"I'm asserting my right to remain silent," the stallion said, "and I want my attorney." Gold looked at the badge and liked its design. It was a golden badge with an eagle at the top that had black areas with room for a seal in the middle.
"What should we do with it?" The other guard asked.
"Give it here for a bit." Gold said. One of the two guards held the badge out to Gold and he took it in his magic. He looked it over before looking at the stallion.
"You were looking to get this engraved, weren't you?" He asked.
"Lawyer." The stallion said.
"You're gonna need one. Impersonation of a Law Enforcement Officer is a felony. Is that why you were at the Canterlot Photography Center yesterday? Looking to get a photo taken for the ID of whatever law enforcement agency you planned on manipulating?" Gold asked.
"Lawyer!" The stallion exclaimed, force being behind his voice.
"Do you have any idea how scared you made my friend? I had to stay the night at her place just so she could sleep! Her brother stood guard outside her door! I don't know what you said, or did, but it scared her so bad I thought she was going to have a panic attack!" Gold said.
"LAWYER!" The stallion screamed.
"Yeah, yeah. I heard you. They don't even need a confession from your sorry plot. You were caught red-hoofed." Gold said. The guards then took the stallion away and Twilight ran to Gold, hugging him. He returned it and Twilight nuzzled him.
"Thank you." She said.
"I was simply doing the right thing." Gold said.
"Twilight," Princess Celestia said, "that was the most impressive display of magic I have ever seen. However, to properly control such magic, it must be done through intense concentration and supervised study. How would you like to be my personal student here at the school?" Twilight gasped.
"R-really?!" Twilight asked.
"One other thing. You might want to look there." Princess Celestia said, pointing to her flank. Twilight looked and gasped.
"My cutie mark!" Twilight exclaimed. Twilight then started jumping around for joy, and Gold smiled.
"Gold," Princess Celestia said, "you look as well." Gold was confused, but looked and was stunned. On his flank, in full view, was a golden badge with a scale and balance in the middle, and it had an eagle atop it. Just like Twilight, Gold had gotten his cutie mark.
"I got my cutie mark." He said. Twilight looked and gasped with joy.
"We got our cutie marks on the same day!" She said. Princess Celestia smiled and Gold held out the badge he held in his magic.
"This should be returned to the proper agency." He said.
"I agree." Princess Celestia said. She took the badge and Twilight hugged Gold.
"We're going to be friends forever." She said. Gold smiled and gave a nod, returning the hug. As they hugged, a surge of magic surrounded them. Gold went on alert, but the magic then formed two lockets. One went to Twilight, and the other went to Gold. The two looked at the lockets and picked them up. Gold opened his and saw the picture of him and Twilight on one side with Twilight's cutie mark on the other.
'What the?' Gold thought. Twilight then opened hers and saw the same, but it was Gold's cutie mark instead of hers.
"What does this mean?" Twilight asked. Gold then remembered the symbol on the band that stallion wore and looked at Princess Celestia.
"There might be more like that stallion. If there is," Gold said, "they need to be found and stopped. Do you know of any groups that use a black symbol on a white background, and members wear red bands around their left forelegs?" Princess Celestia was shocked, but gave a nod.
"I know of one group like that. Was this the symbol you saw?" She asked, showing the symbol.
"Yeah. That's it." Gold said.
"The symbol is called a 'swastika.' I know of only one group to use it. They call themselves the Equestria Preservation Movement. They seek an Equestria where ponies rule all. There's no telling how many there are." Princess Celestia said.
"Then I'll find and put a stop to as many as I can." Gold said. Twilight gasped and held Gold tight.
"I don't want you to go!" She said.
"I'm not leaving right now. I still have some spells to learn that could be useful. I'll tell you when I have to leave, Twilight." Gold said. Princess Celestia was shocked, but understood the meaning of his words.
'He wants to learn the next step first before jumping in.' She thought.
"I will have some guards investigate this matter. You'll be the first to know if they find something." Princess Celestia spoke, authority in her voice. Twilight continued holding Gold tight, not wanting him to go.
"This is what I'm meant to do, Twilight. I was born to criminals," Gold said, "but I'm being raised to stop them. This is my destiny, Twilight. Yours is most likely magic, but mine is law enforcement."
"What about your dream? What do YOU want from life?" Twilight asked, tearing up.
"Twilight, are you crying?" Gold asked.
"Listen to me, Gold! My dream is to learn all types of magic," Twilight said, "and to share what I know with everyone! I want to help them with my magic! Most importantly, I want to share it with you! I want you to be right beside me the whole time! My destiny might be magic, but my dream… is a life with you." Gold was stunned, but understood what she was saying.
"My dream is the same," Gold said, "but I want that dream to be in a world where everyone gets along. Whether they be a pony, a dragon, a griffon, a breezy. You name it! My dream is a life with you in an Equestria where everyone is an equal. For that to happen, I need to follow my destiny." Gold put a hoof on Twilight's face, drying some of her tears. Twilight gave a small sob before hugging him. Gold returned the hug and gently rubbed her back.
Date: July 9
Location: Canterlot Castle, Gold Shield's Bedchambers
Time: 0820 Hours (8:20 AM)
Gold had just finished a workout routine he had set up for himself, and was about to leave to get some breakfast. However, there was a knock at the door. He opened it and saw Twilight with a smile on her face.
"Good morning, Gold!" She said.
"Good morning, Twilight!" Gold said. Twilight then hugged Gold, which he returned, and nuzzled his cheek.
"Ready to start the day?" Twilight asked.
"I will after some breakfast." Gold said. Twilight nodded and the two started walking towards the dining hall, but stopped as they saw Princess Celestia approaching with an urgent look on her face.
"Gold," she said, "there isn't much time. You and Twilight come with me. Don't ask questions." Gold understood the urgency, as did Twilight, and they both nodded before following Princess Celestia. She then took the two to a meeting room that had two guards inside it.
"Your Highness." One said, the two bowing.
"Rise. Tell them what you told me." Princess Celestia said. The guards rose and one got serious.
"We found an EPM meeting location in Vanhoover." The guard said.
"How many did you see?" Gold asked.
"Several. Each wearing a red band with a swastika on a white background. They also had a red flag with the same." The guard said.
"Did you get the names?" Gold asked.
"Names, cities, everything. It was all done covertly. They have no idea that we know." The guard said.
"D-does this mean that Gold has to leave now?" Twilight asked, worried. Princess Celestia looked at Twilight and knelt down to her.
"I'm afraid so, Twilight." She said.
"When?" Gold asked.
"Immediately." Princess Celestia said. Twilight teared up and hugged Gold.
"I'm going to miss you, Gold." She said. Gold hugged her back, and then got an idea.
"You have your locket, right?" He asked. Twilight nodded and held it up, opening it. Gold then used his magic and engraved "I Love You" underneath where his cutie mark was in the locket. Twilight was stunned, but didn't have time to speak as Gold held up his locket and opened it. Twilight then understood, and engraved the same message in the same spot as he had. Princess Celestia gave a knowing smile.
"You should pack, Gold." She said. Gold nodded and went to leave, but was stopped by Princess Celestia.
"Huh?" He asked. Princess Celestia then leaned down to him.
"You have a small bit of time after you pack. Take this chance." She whispered. Gold then understood and nodded before looking at Twilight.
"Say, Twilight. Would you mind helping me pack?" Gold asked. Twilight nodded and they went back to his room. He then closed the door, discreetly locking it while placing a soundproofing spell and an anti-teleportation spell, and Twilight grabbed a bag that he had.
