Happy birthday KakaAnko! Hope you are doing well.
It's tradition now to write you a story. Enjoy! (I hope.)
I do now own.
"How about this spot?" Beverly asked turning to Caesar.
Caesar stared at his phone for a second before looking around the area.
"No," he shook his head. "The line of sight would be blocked by those trees."
"Well, what if we moved over a few feet." Beverly started walking away from the offending trees
"Sound travels at 1100 ft/s from the point of launch. We want to be able to see and hear the fireworks simultaneously, so we don't want to go beyond…" Caesar rambled.
"So why don't you pick the spot?" She interrupted him as she started to zone out.
"Hmmm? Of course, right here." He walked to a spot.
"But Caesar, this is in the middle of a soccer field." Beverly protested. "There's a game starting."
"That's perfect. No one else would take the spot." Caesar said satisfied.
"But we are in these people's way." Beverly tried to explain.
"They can play through." Caesar said.
"No Caesar, I don't care if this is the best spot. You can't sit in the middle of the playing field. Now I'm going to go to the end of the…" When she turned around she noticed that he was not listening to her. He had placed a cube on the floor.
The coach of one of the teams was running towards them shouting something but before he could get close enough the cube exploded in a puff of air. Beverly twisted away to protect herself. Caesar stood unmoving while the coach was knocked onto his back.
His team ran to check on him.
Caesar turned to Beverly with a triumphant look.
"And they said I couldn't molecularly fit two lawn chairs and picnic blanket into a compact carrying device." When he noticed Beverly's face, he frowned. "What?"
0o0
"Well, they certainly were in a bad mood." Caesar observed as they sat in the car.
Beverly sighed. It seemed impossible that Caesar was that clueless, but she knew he was.
After the incident they were escorted out of the park by security and told not to come back. They were running out of places to go.
"Caesar, I know you mean well but you can't just plant yourself into the middle of a game and not expect people to get mad." She told him.
"They had plenty of room. Besides, I was going to try out my intangibility shield." He said matter-of-factly.
"Your what?" Beverly gaped at him.
"Sure, like this." He lifted his vest a little to reveal that he was wearing an odd-looking belt. He pressed the middle on the buckle.
Beverly felt a slight tingle. She looked down at her lap and gasped. She could see through herself. Looking at Caesar, she could also see right through him. She gingerly poked Caesar. She was able to touch him. Then she tried to touch the steering wheel. It felt solid to her, but she could see through it including the engine.
"So, what happens now?" She asked.
"Try driving through the cars in the parking lot." He suggested.
"What?" She asked incredulously.
"Yes, we are intangible. We should be able to go through any solid object." Caesar said.
Beverly stared at him for a second. She then started the car and shifted it into gear. Taking a deep breath, she hit the gas. Immediately, she felt herself move through the cars. She saw the items in people's trunk, seats, and glove compartment as well as the engine.
"This is so weird." She said nervously.
"It's working better than I expected." Caesar said.
"Wait, what do you mean… better than you expected?" She gulped.
"There was a possibility that our molecules would deteriorate as they might become attracted to the solid molecules." Caesar explained.
Beverly slammed on the brakes. They were in the open parking lot. "What do you mean deteriorate?"
"By becoming intangible we have weakened our molecular bonds which then can break off and join a stronger bond." Caesar noted.
"And you're testing this on us?" She asked appalled.
"It's a good as any time." He shrugged. "The computer-generated models suggested that it's 98% safe."
"Maybe you should turn it off now." She said weakly.
"Well, now that we have it on…"
Beverly couldn't believe she let him talk her into driving back into the park. But because of the intangibility they were able to drive right through the fence, trees, and bushes. She had insisted that they keep incognito as to not get kicked out by security. So now they sat in a grove of trees looking into the night sky. A few seconds later, the same sky was lit up with all manners of color bursting into a shower of glittery rain. Beverly marveled at all the view of the fireworks from their seat. She wondered if Caesar could have done the intangibility why they needed to be in the soccer field. She asked.
He looked uncomfortable as he seemed to search for the words. "It's not every day I get to be seen with a chica bonita."
This shocked her. "Wait, you just wanted to be seen with a pretty woman? You think I'm pretty?"
"I think beauty shouldn't be hidden." He tried to look casual as he stared at the fireworks.
Beverly's thoughts were a jumble. In some ways, it seemed strange that Caesar would be vain enough to want to be seen with a pretty girl. In another way, it made him seem more human.
"That's kinda sweet." She smiled as she leaned in. "But there's advantages to being hidden."
"Such as?" Caesar turned to her confused.
Beverly laughed as she kissed him on the lips. Caesar's eyes widened before he closed them and wrapped his arms around her.
The rest of the fireworks went unnoticed.
